Why are strange people ringing my doorbell?
I'm in NYC in a non-doorman building. Yesterday, two strangers rang the building's doorbell and made it up to my apartment.
The first one showed up in the afternoon. I buzzed him in because I thought it was UPS, which I was expecting. I stupidly opened the door and the guy sort of jumped and registered that I wasn't the guy he was expecting. He was holding a bike seat but didn't have a messenger bag. I asked him who he wanted and he said somebody had told him to come there, then left.
Fifteen minutes later, I had to leave, opened the door, and there is the guy standing outside my door. I said, "Who are you looking for?" He said, "He told me it was this apartment. Maybe it was *this* place" and kind of scraped around the place across the hall.
At 5am the next morning, someone buzzed my apartment repeatedly from the street. I didn't let them in but some dumbass in another apartment must have, because they kept ringing my doorbell. When they tried the knob, I said through the door, "What do you want? You have the wrong address." They said, "You're right," and left.
What do you suppose is going on? I'm middle-aged, boring, don't buy drugs, live in a shitty rental building, have no money. Is someone casing the joint for some reason? I'd file a police report, but what would be the point?

Don't answer the door, dude.

Stop gallivanting around open windows dressed like a whore.

First thing that came to mind is that someone may have maliciously given your address out?

Put a fake camera outside of apartment. If you're really paranoid, put a real one up.

A drug dealer texted several people an address with a typo. Stop answering the door, somebody who really wants their drugs might be pissed when you don’t have any.

[quote]First thing that came to mind is that someone may have maliciously given your address out?
This is what boggles. The only people who have my address are Seamless, Shipt (Target) and MaxDelivery (now deceased). I haven't gotten laid since well before the pandemic. Nobody comes over.

Why don't just shoot them? That seems to be the thing these days.

Escort scammers use random peoples addresses. The scam works like this - I post a fake escort ad, I demand payment via cashapp or Venmo from the john, then I give them a random local address. There’s no escort at all and the John can’t report it to anybody because he’s liable too.

I was thinking that they were probably expecting to see a woman given that they leave pretty quickly when confronted with OP, a man.

It's mistaken identity. R5 is very likely.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | May 7, 2023 12:57 PM

R4 Is that legal? I know that when you have a camera outside your house you are only allowed to record your front yard and driveway. Not other people's houses. So how would that work in an apartment?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | May 7, 2023 12:58 PM

R5, I was afraid of that.
R9/R10, that makes sense — they bailed instantly. I'm not the most masc cowboy but I can sound like a potentially dangerous dude through a door.

Yeah, putting a personal camera up in a communal area wouldn't be legal or allowed in most apartment buildings.
Another thing that makes me think it isn't a drug dealer is that they don't ask for drugs, even the guy who didn't see you from behind the door.

So if it's an escort scam, the frustrated john could wait in the hallway to kick my ass when I leave, or I could come home from work to someone waiting outside my door.
Should I file a police report? I feel like that would do nothing.
What exactly can you carry on your person for self-defense in NYC? I've done some cursory research and it seems like not very much.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | May 7, 2023 1:05 PM

Meh, so far they seem to understand the mistake they've made and run away in shame. Just explain to them that they've been scammed and the scammer has randomly used your address - there is no reason why the scammer would give out their own address.

R17 Nah, they probably realize what happened. there are services that will look up and see if your address or information is posted on the dark web or anywhere shady, but I don't know if they're credible. Is your apartment only accessible from the front door? Get strike plates, they're cheap and prevent your door from being kicked in. Besides that there's not much you can do. You can make the lock unpickable but it will break it if anyone attempts to pick the lock (meaning the lock will have to be drilled out after that).

Cut, just over 8”, and thick, I mean really thick. While I wasn’t expecting it, it was delicious nonetheless.

I'm very sorry you're dealing with this right now, OP. Sounds so stressful. Senseless, annoying, mildly concerning, and an invasion of peace and privacy. I hope it resolves soon! xo

Next time someone turns up, present hole, silly!

My concern is that next time, someone's going to present hole into me via handgun, R23.

I know a girl who answered her doorbell. AND THEN SHE DIED!

This happened. I've been on DL for 20 years. If I wanted to be an EST, I would come up with something less mundane.

I'm going with your address was given out, purposely or otherwise, as a drug dealer's or you're being cased to be robbed.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | May 7, 2023 1:55 PM

[quote] as a drug dealer's or you're being cased to be robbed.
So why do none of these people ask for their drugs? And if it's being cased to be robbed, why do they get buzzed in and then run once confronted by OP?
by Anonymous | reply 30 | May 7, 2023 1:58 PM
|
OP all you need to say is "NEW PHONE, WHO DIS!?"
by Anonymous | reply 31 | May 7, 2023 2:00 PM
|
Also the sheer number of people within a short timeframe doesn't suggest being cased for robbery. OP also says that he lives in a shitty rental building and doesn't have any money. This isn't robbery.

Next time, enlist the help of these people. Just tell them, "A lot of people keep coming here. Why? What are you looking for? I want to stop this." You might find out where they're getting the info from b/c, whatever they're looking for, they likely don't want to be misled either.
It's worth a try.

They probably think it's the address of a hooker. Then they hear a man's voice and don't know what to do.

Turn the red lights in the windows off.

When I was a teenager, we use to ring the buzzer at random buildings so we could use the stairwells, laundry rooms to fuck. Fun times.

Just take a page from Liz Lemon's book and yell, "You're too late! I already killed her!"

[quote]My concern is that next time, someone's going to present hole into me via handgun, [R23].
OP, it does sound like a drug deal situation, but they're buyers, not sellers. People buying drugs aren't usually violent and they don't show up to drug deals in an aggressive posture. I think the fact that they're basically leaving once it sinks in that they're not getting their drugs from you indicates that you aren't dealing with violent or aggressive criminals. They're just druggies.
[quote]So why do none of these people ask for their drugs?
Because OP is telling them to leave and that they have the wrong address. He's pretty obviously not selling any drugs. People buying drugs are also not stupid about how to buy drugs, and showing up at the place you thought they were selling drugs, being told you're at the wrong place, and then demanding "But where are my drugs?" is pretty fucking stupid.

Maybe you need to try to get out of public housing.

I *wish* I were in public housing for the rent alone, Mr. Mayor. Not all of us can afford two brownstones in New Jersey and Bed-Stuy.
I'm in one of the zillion converted-tenement buildings that charge market rent for a working buzzer but no intercom.

Rather than buzz people in (even UPS) you can walk down and see who t is first.
