Shemar Moore Drags Race into the Cancellation of his Show SWAT

A day after CBS announced the cancellation of SWAT, series lead Shemar Moore took to social media to share an impassioned video of himself expressing his disappointment in how the decision was handled.

The network revealed Friday that the series, on which Moore has starred as LAPD Sgt. Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson since its November 2017 launch, will not return after its season six finale airs May 19. The show — an update of the 1970s series of the same name — actually grew its total audience compared to its previous season, averaging 6.82 million viewers over seven days.

“It makes no sense,” Moore said of the cancellation in an Instagram video posted Saturday. “We’ve done nothing wrong. We did everything that was asked for.”

Moore praised the show’s ratings over the past two years and emphasized its strong performance on Friday nights. The Criminal Minds alum also stated that he is the only African American male lead on broadcast television, not including streaming or cable, and pointed out that Chris O’Donnell, not LL Cool J, was No. 1 on the call sheet for NCIS: Los Angeles, which is also ending its run this month on CBS.

“SWAT is the most diverse show on CBS,” Moore said. “CBS, when I got hired to be Hondo on SWAT, was getting a lot of flak for lack of diversity. If I post this, and I think I might, I will get in a lot of trouble with CBS because I’m calling them out. Because they’ve been wonderful to me for 26 out of my 29-year career. But to abruptly get told that you’re canceled when you led us to believe last week — and the week before, and the week before that — that we would have some semblance of a season seven to at least say goodbye, if not continue. And to abruptly be told, ‘You’re done.'”

Moore said that there was “a lot of politics involved” and referenced licensing fees for the project that is a co-production of Sony Pictures TV and CBS Studios. According to Moore, he was not sharing his thoughts for his personal benefit but out of concern not only for his family but for everyone else who has worked on the show. He made it clear that he hopes the powers that be will realize that a mistake was made and that the series can continue.

“I will be fine, but I’m upset because I busted my whole entire ass to prove that I could do this, and I did prove that I could do this,” he said. “I understand it’s not personal — it’s business — but I still have faith that SWAT will live to see another day. So I’m asking my homies, my fans and my baby girls, and the rest of the world who follow me or follow the show, follow the cast, my brothers and my sisters: Make some fucking noise. And let them know that canceling SWAT is a fucking mistake.”

The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to CBS for comment.

During a March interview with THR’s TV’s Top 5 podcast, executive producer Shawn Ryan said it was “up in the air” whether the show would get a seventh season in this current era where platforms have put a premium on full ownership of their series. “There’s no reason why the show shouldn’t be picked up, other than the economics of the business are changing,” Ryan said at the time. “CBS and Sony will or will not figure out a way to economically make a season seven work.”

To be fair, it’s one of their highest rated shows. The cancellation is odd.

by Anonymousreply 1May 6, 2023 5:53 PM

It was probably a licensing fee thing.

by Anonymousreply 2May 6, 2023 5:55 PM

Maybe CBS wanted to bump some of the characters to recurring rather than regulars to save money. The network is doing that with other shows as broadcast TV slowly dies.

Perhaps the SWAT show runners refused. I dunno.

by Anonymousreply 3May 6, 2023 5:58 PM

Maybe he'll come out now,

by Anonymousreply 4May 6, 2023 6:01 PM

Maybe it was getting too expensive

Hmmm. Malcolm was seen in the "next week on The Young & the Restless" clip last night. Maybe he can help rescue Nate from his self-destructive, mendacious behaviors.

He was the hottest man when I was a teenager. Now I find him irritating.

His commentary wasn't unreasonable.

by Anonymousreply 10May 6, 2023 6:26 PM

R10 agreed.

My grandmother loves him lol. She watches ION Channel and whenever Criminal Minds comes on she gets excited because “her boyfriend” is on 😂

by Anonymousreply 11May 6, 2023 6:33 PM

Eh, everything he said seems pretty rational

by Anonymousreply 12May 6, 2023 6:42 PM

6 seasons of a drama on network TV is a long run these days. The network has enough eps to sell into syndication or streaming. They didn't need to continue with this.

by Anonymousreply 13May 6, 2023 6:46 PM

You've had six seasons. I don't feel sorry for you.

by Anonymousreply 14May 6, 2023 7:07 PM

The economics of TV are changing. The SWAT decision took a while, so the network was clearly negotiating over licensing fee. The production company couldn’t give them a number that worked.

by Anonymousreply 15May 6, 2023 7:12 PM

Shemar, honey -- networks only care about one color: GREEN.

by Anonymousreply 16May 6, 2023 7:22 PM

For someone who has been in show business for 29 years (and on broadcast TV for 26 of those years), he seems totally fucking clueless about the current broadcast landscape. Did he not see that Fox canceled their number one (!) scripted series, 9-1-1, because they couldn't/wouldn't pay the new licensing fee to Disney? Did he not hear that a sitcom on his own network recently demoted all the series regulars, except for the two leads, from 22 guaranteed episodes to just 5? Was he not told that the actors and producers on another CBS series took a 25 percent paycut just to get the series renewed for another season?

Being canceled sucks, but maybe be happy your show made it to 130 episodes and syndication? Most series don't.

by Anonymousreply 17May 6, 2023 7:57 PM

It seems like he was under the impression that they were going to be picked up and CBS backed out. He's upset, but he'll get over it. He's very marketable, he'll get picked up for something.

by Anonymousreply 18May 6, 2023 8:18 PM

R18 is correct. He’s never not worked in all these years. He’s a beautiful man and the industry has always kept him working.

by Anonymousreply 19May 6, 2023 8:20 PM

R17 He does seem happy that it did

by Anonymousreply 20May 6, 2023 8:23 PM

I would have canceled it because of his awful goatee.

by Anonymousreply 21May 6, 2023 8:28 PM

Pretty boy always annoyed me. Let's see where his "talent" takes him next. Family Feud?

by Anonymousreply 22May 6, 2023 8:36 PM

I'm no economist but I can't see the TV business surviving.

To get viewers, you need to spend money and and have a quality product. That costs money.

But it seems the ratings are never high enough. Good shows get canceled.

Crappy shows with nothing to offer but are cheap might last a little longer but they also don't get ratings and they get canceled.

by Anonymousreply 23May 6, 2023 8:41 PM

They’ll survive off of reality tv and news. Those are cheap to produce. Scripted series on network tv will be a thing of the past eventually. But not yet.

by Anonymousreply 24May 6, 2023 8:43 PM

Somewhere along the line, CBS and Sony decided the show wasn't financially beneficial to the company. Shemar, you and the feelings of your cast were not figured into the equation.

So Meghan Markle sweetheart--as shitty as it feels, find another excuse besides victimhood and race. It has nothing to do with your skin color. It was a financial decision. And a six-year run is a good deal. It's called show BUSINESS.

I was let go from my company with no warning--and not because it wasn't doing well--but because the company was being sold and "going in a different direction." It sucks, but I couldn't make a video about victimhood. No one cared. And I only got a two-week severance. I was a mid-level manager making a decent salary. The company made a financial decision.

by Anonymousreply 25May 6, 2023 8:45 PM

He can't see the blessing of not working 18 hour days now that he's a new dad?

by Anonymousreply 26May 6, 2023 8:46 PM

This was a nice thread about Shemar Moore and his being upset about his TV show, but some stupid racist whore has to bring Meghan Markle into it. Meghan Markle is at home minding her own business and has nothing to do with this. So please shut the fuck up and crawl back to your fucking klan meeting, asshole.

by Anonymousreply 27May 6, 2023 8:48 PM

The syndication market is almost dead. And streaming doesn’t have the same economic model.

by Anonymousreply 28May 6, 2023 9:01 PM

He’s never in anything good.

by Anonymousreply 29May 6, 2023 9:06 PM

When all else fails, play the race card.

by Anonymousreply 32May 6, 2023 9:40 PM

SVU’s run is the big exception. Even the revamped Law and Order will go away once Mariska and company fold up shop.

Episodic TV is dying. Too expensive, too little audience. No one has patience for commercials anymore.

He’s got six years. Consider it a miracle.

by Anonymousreply 33May 6, 2023 9:53 PM

To be clearer, Network TV is dying, long with cable.

Streaming is thriving but it’s not as lucrative for talent for the most part, because of shorter seasons/runs and the lack of reruns and syndication.

by Anonymousreply 34May 6, 2023 10:11 PM

[quote] His commentary wasn't unreasonable.

A lot of it wasn't, but he got a little lost in the woods during the rant.

TV is changing and not for the good. Network TV will look more like a cross between reality TV and QVC in the next five years, because networks can't afford shows with scripts, sets etc.

by Anonymousreply 35May 6, 2023 10:14 PM

Royalties are no longer a thing for actors on new shows because of streaming.

by Anonymousreply 36May 6, 2023 10:18 PM

by Anonymousreply 37May 6, 2023 10:20 PM

I bet you Shemar announces this week he's leaving Hollywood and he's leaving CA. That'll make three - the triple crown will be complete.

by Anonymousreply 38May 7, 2023 12:06 AM

The only race that concerns him is the race to the closet.

by Anonymousreply 39May 7, 2023 12:25 AM

R17, Which sitcom demoted all its regulars to recurring except for the top two characters?

by Anonymousreply 40May 7, 2023 1:56 AM

I try my best not to get my social justice opinions from former International Male underwear models.

by Anonymousreply 41May 7, 2023 1:59 AM

R40, Bob ❤️ Abishola.

by Anonymousreply 42May 7, 2023 2:35 AM

R17 911 is moving from Fox to ABC. It seems as if networks don’t want to run a show past 5 years. It sucks.

by Anonymousreply 43May 7, 2023 3:25 AM

Maybe he can go back to Criminal Minds Evolution on Paramount.

by Anonymousreply 44May 7, 2023 3:27 AM

R31, I think there's just too much content out there for any show to sustain an audience for a long time.

I'm cutting back on expenditures and got rid of my DVR box and cable and streaming services Netflix and Apple.

I am keeping Amazon Prime and I have direcTV streaming; there are so many free streaming apps like Tubi.

It's all too much. It's all too expensive.

by Anonymousreply 45May 7, 2023 6:11 AM

[quote] That'll make three - the triple crown will be complete.

Who’s the other one? Scott Baio and?

by Anonymousreply 46May 7, 2023 6:15 AM

[quote]I think there's just too much content out there for any show to sustain an audience for a long time.

True. The audience today is so fragmented across so many different specialty channels, streaming, other media, etc.

In the old days, t.v. shows had big audiences and most people you knew were watching some of the same shows. Many t.v. shows had big cultural and social impacts. Except for a few shows today, that's not really possible anymore.

by Anonymousreply 47May 7, 2023 7:47 AM

[quote]He's upset, but he'll get over it. He's very marketable, he'll get picked up for something.

He clearly said he'd be OK. He was upset about the cast and crew that are now out of work.

by Anonymousreply 48May 7, 2023 10:14 AM

Thanks. R42. Must suck to be on a hit sitcom, think you'll be set for a few years and then find out you're shifted to part-time.

[Quote]He was upset about the cast and crew that are now out of work.

And who will get jobs on other productions. Isn't that the nature of Hollywood and show business?

by Anonymousreply 49May 7, 2023 12:09 PM

R46 Amber Heard. She announced earlier this week she's packing up her stellar career and moving overseas.

by Anonymousreply 50May 7, 2023 4:18 PM

Gurl, no. Bye.

Yeah just saw that. Shemar knew what he was doing. Well done.

by Anonymousreply 53May 8, 2023 11:04 PM

It’s been officially renewed. Wow. Serious respect for Shemar Moore.

by Anonymousreply 54May 8, 2023 11:40 PM

It does seem odd that a show with comparatively high ratings would be cancelled, but then again if I were a network exec and had an easy move I could make to not have to answer phone calls from Shemar Moore, I'd be tempted.

Blacks make everything about race when it’s mostly not. What a mental prison.

by Anonymousreply 58May 9, 2023 1:43 AM

My elderly mother loves this show, but not because of SHEmar. Shes got the hots for the silver daddy. They can marry off She-mar to a dozen women, have him produce 12 babies, and hes still not capable of being sexy because the fact is hes gay. He knows it,we know it,the planet knows it. He cant convincingly portray a sexy straight man because hes probably a big ole bottom.

by Anonymousreply 59May 9, 2023 2:11 AM

R59, he and his well defined genetically blessed half naked body was photographed at a beach that was near a gay beach and tabloids said he was frolicking or something near a gay beach. He was at a press event for CRIMINAL MINDS and took control of the narrative if not the situation, telling reporters that he was NEAR a gay beach then maybe he was NEARLY GAY.

Hilarious.

To me, he's always come off as gay but back in the 1990s, he was a kid and that's when you had to stay in the closet to keep your career.

I wish him well. I believe he really cared about Kristoff.

by Anonymousreply 60May 19, 2023 3:58 PM

I used to see him at Gold’s Gym in the 90s. (He worked his ass off.)

Never did my gaydar go off. He read totally straight to me, and all his interactions seemed to confirm that.

Doesn’t mean I was right. Just my experience.
