How much is a Royal making these days?

Christ I'd forgotten about the concert. I'll take 700 year old religious ceremonies in the name of tradition but I draw the line at Take That.

If he trips over his dress and that heavy crown cracks his skull do they then do this again in a couple of months for Will?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | May 6, 2023 1:42 PM |
When Charles was sitting there in his full regalia, robes, crown, scepters, etc., he looked like an old lady in a nursing home that the staff had chosen to be Queen of the May or something. They got her all dressed up and the poor thing has no idea what she’s doing, where she is, or why she’s wearing a costume.

I must say, Katherine, Princess of Wales looked the absolute best of all of them. I guess she and Sophie opted not to wear tiaras. She wore an Alexander McQueen gown, and a head piece by them as well. And little Charlotte was a miniature of her mother. Absolutely the best. Both of them. of course Louis is adorable. He was restrained most of the time, on good behavior, but he sort of let loose on the balcony for a bit. William is gigantic! So tall, and so imposing in his robes. Now if anyone can carry out the fashion requirements of the job it's him. He has the physicality for it. But as I have watched him the past two or three weeks he seemed genuinely frazzled. I must say after watching Charles today, I don't think he'll be king very long. He looked worn out.

Katy was there because she is performing
by Anonymous | reply 17 | May 6, 2023 2:02 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 29 | May 6, 2023 2:30 PM |
Today was historically significant, but watching the ceremony and looking at pictures, I’ve been completely underwhelmed. The reason Charles’ mother’s coronation was so riveting is because she was young, her husband was a dashing prince out of a fairy tale, and the ceremony was being televised for the first time. However, today, Charles just looked old and pathetic, and Camilla made an absolute fool of herself.
Worst of all, William and Kate looked radiant, and their prominent role in the ceremony reminded the world what could’ve been.

Yes, he flew back on American Airlines. It’s not very hard to coordinate flights. No need for a private jet and given the optics I doubt he would have taken one even if he wanted to.
Good on Harry for doing what the Royalist wanted. Came alone, supported his father from the back of the church, and left.
Anyone that’s had beef with family has done something similar. They didn’t want Harry on the balcony and certainly wouldn’t have wanted his wife up there if fuse had attended. So the Brits got why they wanted, Charle’s children in attendance with none of the drama.
Win-win. Happy Birthday to Prince Archie!!! I hope Harry’s flight arrives on time!
by Anonymous | reply 48 | May 6, 2023 2:51 PM |
R45 consider Harry was in William’s terf, it’s up to William to reach out. God knows, he and his wife would never make the effort to visit California. I hope the boys get over it as well, but I just think this is a situation where you don’t need to be close to your family, just because you are related.
I wouldn’t dare be so cold while the cameras are on, but my social and employment standing isn’t guaranteed like William and Kate’s.
All well, Harry still has the family he’s wanted, living in a beautiful home, in sun kissed California. By all accounts, he’ll be fine. William gets to play boss man back in the UK.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | May 6, 2023 2:55 PM |
Allegedly Katy and Lionel Ritchie were given single Coronation invites (no plus one, not enough room in the Abbey) as part of their deal to perform at the concert tomorrow. Katy also got use of an overnight private guest suite at Windsor Castle as part of her deal.
Lionel has had a busy month, his daughter just married UK business royalty of a sort a few weeks ago, in a lavish ceremony in the south of France. He is Sir Lucian Grainge's son.

I enjoyed watching it during lunch and housework. Not much glamour left in the world, nice to see some pageantry, and the music is lovely. Hopefully KC will hold on a few years, it will give William time to mature into the role.
Tried to catch up on what DL was up to, but the second thread was filled with stupid comments about black people. Did anyone mention the gloriously butch Princess Anne and her Harry-blocking red feather? What about still-slim Beatrice in her lovely pink dress? Who was the young beauty in the front row directly behind the gospel choir?
And so many handsome men in uniform.

Way back at r30, how did Camilla make a fool of herself? I’m watching highlights because I didn’t want to get up to watch the whole thing live. In pics and short videos, she seemed ok, but she definitely looked a bit tired.
OT but I’ve noticed since prime time was implemented, no more10 inane daily threads on Meghan Markle. I also enjoy the fact that the poster/troll who loves to insults Americans whenever they display an opinion other than the troll’s opinion has been suspiciously quiet. The threads are now at a reasonable amount and the conversation has been mostly civil and interesting.

Look at the lifespans of Chuck's parents and the former Queen Mother. At 74, he might reign for twenty years or more!
Why some people are eager for King William, I do not know. Charles may be weird and self-centered (he WAS born to be King, after all, AND he's a Boomer! And a Scorpio!), but he's progressive and not mean.

Louis is at least a cute kid. I never found George to be cute. He has the weirdest looks, like he got the oddest matchup of features from his bloodlines. He does seem like a sweet kid though and well mannered.
Louis is very cute but a handful and unruly, something George and Charlotte never were, at least not at public events lol.

King Charles is a lot but he does seem to be fair and have progressive views for the most part despite being in his 70s. William is actually way more traditional and uptight than his own father.

by Anonymous | reply 72 | May 6, 2023 3:12 PM |
Harry was seated in the royalty section, along with the rest of the family etc. he just didn’t have a special section being the son of Charles like he would have originally.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | May 6, 2023 3:12 PM |
r58 James II was a Catholic and head of the C of E. I'm reading a biography of George III that said he was an agnostic when he was young, and that's when it actually mattered. Charles would just have to not attach one of these to the back of his gold coach and he'd be fine.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | May 6, 2023 3:12 PM |
r53 Well that is something r49 struggles to grasp. Why talk to someone who could use or twist what you say for money from media deals or giving nuggets of information to amateur journalist Gayle King to twist.

[quote]R58, Brilliant. Pose an unanswerable, and in this case also ridiculous, question and then expect an answer.
A lot of educated boomers are atheists. It's a valid question. His oaths during the coronation often mentioned God. They're not valid.
Having the monarch as the head of the Church of England is a joke anyways. Not surprising that power mad Henry VIII came up with that.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | May 6, 2023 3:16 PM |
R71, "[D]espite being in his 70s"?? I'm 73 and quite a progressive Liberal. Remember the anti-Nixon/Reagan/Bush Boomers?
R72, I suggest to you that Harry is an unreliable narrator. What makes you think that Charles was or is not "loving and supportive"? Are you confusing Charles with how his own cold father Philip treated him?
by Anonymous | reply 77 | May 6, 2023 3:17 PM |
I doubt if Charles or anyone else actually believes much of the stuff said in the ceremony. It’s just tradition & pageantry at this point.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | May 6, 2023 3:18 PM |
r72 Then why did Harry choose to say differently in the past? He even credited William with encouraging him to get counselling . What about the other side of the equation? Was Harry a good and supportive brother to William for all these years? Why should William have to babysit Harry all his life?

R76, You're still an idiot. You have no evidence re: "a lot of educated Boomers" (of whom I am one, but "agnostic" is more the accurate descriptor for me), never mind ANY WHATSOEVER for Charles. Then you state like you've got a grip on fact that his vows today are "not valid."
You are talking OOYA.

"Lust-mad" was more like it, r76. Henry VIII regarded himself a good and faithful Catholic up until he was denied that divorce approval. Then he went on a monastery "shock and awe" looting attack, never mind his brutal punishments. But his break with Rome and subsequent "Defender of the Faith" title notwithstanding, he is the reason the Anglican Church is thisclose to Catholic.

r83 The book peppered with provable lies like he was told at boarding school the Queen Mother had died when he was on a sking holiday. Or the previous claim Charles never took him on a bikeride as a child but then photographic proof emerged. Why oh why do these inconsistencies keep occurring with such regularity?? Lies can be detailed. Surely its not a principle you abide by in real life that if something is detailed it must be true!! As the poster you are replying to said Harry is an unreliable narrator . You might want to preach to Harry about growing up with a lot of stuff doesn't fill a lonely heart or make a good parent given his 16 bathroom mansion and craving for the billionaire lifestyle. I would not assume Harry's kids spend any less time being looked after by nannies than Harry did. You are trying to make him something he isn't to fit a narrative.

by Anonymous | reply 89 | May 6, 2023 3:34 PM |
R83, And how has Charles "turned out"? A flawed human being? Oh, no!
Everybody praised E2, but she denied her own sister a chance at marital happiness. She exiled her Uncle David. She allowed her husband to make choices regarding the upbringing and education of Charles.
But be that as it may, for you didn't mention Elizabeth, I'm not sure any parent, any adult, of any celebrity status is role-model material.
Maybe Jimmy Carter!
by Anonymous | reply 90 | May 6, 2023 3:36 PM |
r90 The Queen didn't block Margarets marriage but said she'd lose some royal perks if she did marry him. Margaret choose the perks. We don't know of their union would have been well matched and lead to marital happiness. But your first point is correct on the nonsense that poster was making on how Charles has turned out.
There was commentary on social media that Harry's eyes looked dilated today as if he was high or taken drugs the night before.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | May 6, 2023 3:41 PM |
So I watched some of the coronation live, at work, on my phone, with the sound off, and obviously I missed a few things.
Such as, who was that lady in the teal dress who was faffing around with the crown jewels, along with all the religious dignitaries and such?
Why was Charles given two scepters at one point? I mean if you've got the Star of Africa in one scepter, why do you need another!
Did they ever show Harry? There were like no shots of the seated spectators, at least none that I saw.
What was the Princess of Wales wearing under her vast cloak? Did we ever get to see it?
by Anonymous | reply 92 | May 6, 2023 3:43 PM |
[quote]Or the previous claim Charles never took him on a bikeride as a child but then photographic proof emerged. Why oh why do these inconsistencies keep occurring with such regularity??
He wrote from his memories and perspective.
I do hope that they will be able to get past all of their rifts and come to terms with their various rifts and what nots. It's really just the 3 of them. But I have a bit of sadness for Harry's children. They experience none of this and are like outsiders. Just think how many little boys and girls could have found some type of inspiration by seeing bi-racial children (like themselves) attending such a ceremony and also participating as a full royal.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | May 6, 2023 3:46 PM |
I don’t think most biracial children will see inspiration in Harry’s 3/4 white children who look white.
If we saw the kids and didn’t know they were Markle’s kids we wouldn’t know they were part black.

r92 Penny Mourdant was the woman in teal at the coronation. I'm not a Brit but I know she's a Tory who recently ran for Prime Minister (and lost). She is head of the Privy Council, hence her prominent role today.
One of the scepters was the Rod of Equity? Not sure. There are several scepters, from what I understand, but only two feature in the Coronation ceremony.
Kate wore a specially designed gown by McQueen under her robes, but we didn't see much of it. The front hem had some nice silver detailing that you could see in some shots.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | May 6, 2023 3:50 PM |
r93 There were lots of biracial people , indeed non whites from all backgrounds at the service . Why wouldn't they cause inspiration? As r94 points out visually Harry's children are white. They are also too young to have attended anyway. Princess Anne didn't fully attend the whole ceremony at that age for her mother's coronation.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | May 6, 2023 3:51 PM |
Oh yes, I'm the guy who just got glimpses of the live ceremony, with another question: Tell me, :Tiara Experts, have we seen the Princess of Wales' massive tiara before? I don't recall seeing it discussed on our endless threads on the subject!
Because I thought it was the perfect choice! If a gal is so weighed down with ceremonial garb that nobody can even see her fabulous gown, THAT is the time to wear the biggest damn tiara in the jewel vault! And a fabulous updo, of course, we couldn't see anything of her but her head.
by Anonymous | reply 98 | May 6, 2023 3:53 PM |
r93 Si his memories are wildly unreliable then . You are confirming my point. His perspective is being treated as gospel truth by some including those with an agenda or emotional investment in believing a certain narrative.
by Anonymous | reply 99 | May 6, 2023 3:56 PM |
r98 that wasn't a tiara, it was a silver gilt headpiece specially designed by McQueen (same designer as her gown) for the occasion. The same designer also designed Charlotte's headpiece.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | May 6, 2023 3:58 PM |
@r95, Few people have denied it's historical accuracy. You can nitpick on minor details all day, but no one has said any of the major events were wrong. In fact most everything Harry talked about were already common knowledge, he just wanted to get his side out there and that's exactly what he did and why his family is mad at him.
His family only wants their version of events released
by Anonymous | reply 101 | May 6, 2023 3:58 PM |
I think that the headpiece at r98 and especially the makeup on kate are just awful. Because she's aging and always so skinny, her face already looks incredibly sharp and angular, and the dramatic makeup contrasts and the sharp leaves only enhance the look of pointiness. She looks like she's just come back from an appointment with Maria Shriver's face sharpener.

In an attempt to defend that poster a bit, while "no" the series "The Crown" is not 100% accurate there have been many who have attested that many of the events depicted were not too far off of what actually happened. It's been reported that Betty watched the series and did like it but found that there were scenes/incidents that were overly dramatic.
by Anonymous | reply 103 | May 6, 2023 4:02 PM |
r11 I think their talking about The Crown, which many people have questioned its accuracy, not Harry's book . He just wanted money, his need to get his alleged side of the story out and the tantrum it was would never have happened if Daddy had given him and Meghan everything they wanted including whipping out his chequebook. The royal family have not gotten their side of the story out at all. So your last point is nonsense. They notoriously rarely give interviews on personal matters and regardless Harry's perspective or side of the story is not the same as the gospel truth. Little lies and inaccuracies reveal a deeper problem , a bigger one rather than just being minor details. For starters it shows a penchant of embroiding stories for effect- ie lying.

There are many who have no idea of who the various people of color are. Yes, I would agree that visually Harry's children appear white but that could be a teaching moment for many. Also, there are many who could even identify with that type of situation.

[quote] But I have a bit of sadness for Harry's children. They experience none of this and are like outsiders.
Lilibet is far too young to attend such an event--you cannot have a toddler wailing in the Abbey during a coronation. Even Archie is too young.
It is all moot, though, since it was Meghan's choice to stay at home with them. We have been told she was invited, and had the palace lied about inviting her, I am sure Harry and Meghan would have told us by now.

The entire rationale for The Crown is deeply sus. Robert Lacey is not a historian's bootlace. Just from what I read here it is clear the show overlooks documented facts (eg the Princess Margaret marriage issue), never mind that it invents almost all of the characters' motivations and private conversations, while blending in enough historical accuracy that lazy viewers believe it lock, stock and barrel even when they pretend to be more sophisticated about it. The result is that people seem to think they are watching a reality TV show involving the Royals.

Allegedly Camilla injured her back a couple earlier this week, which is why she was crowned sitting rather than kneeling as is the custom for the Queen Consort and why she didn't carry the sceptre during the procession out of the Abbey.
I'll admit I'm a fat middle-aged queen and I did get teary-eyed as Charles left the Abbey. Imagine having to wait your whole life for your destiny only to know you'll only live it out for a decade or so. Also, I do hope William and Kate are crowned before they are elderly.

R58, I haven't seen anyone comment on TV about Charles stopping as he left the Abbey, to receive blessings from the non Christian religious leaders, I saw Hindu, Sikh, a Rabbi and a Muslim all standing together praying with him. It only took a couple minutes but still.
I think William has issues and his temperament is going to prove worse than his father. Charles is a kind person with an empathetic personality. He certainly exudes warmth when he is out with people. William is dutiful and wound very tight. He has a certain pomposity too. Very stiff and self-important. That won't lessen as he ages. He is lucky to have Catherine and 3 adorable kids, because he was standing behind the door when they passed out Charm.

You know, Harry went after the tabloids so the tabloids are going to pound him into dust if they can. But stepping back from their frothing at the mouth hysteria, I have to think about Charles' candor when discussing his mother and his father long years ago. At the time it was shocking. IMO, Harry just took it a step further. To me the whole thing is a big yawn. I don't care that he married an American Divorcee who is Bi racial. And the stuff he said in the book, hating on his "wicked step mother" bullying by his older brother, and a father who didn't give a very needy kid what he needed, as if anyone could. Given the way he was raised, and the role models provided for him, I think Charles did the best he could. To me it's all bullshit. But it is not salacious or vicious. If you read the Tabloid tantrums you get a different impression than you do from the actual book. And I don't think he is unique in embellishing the truth or discussing "alternative facts." LOL! Harry is not a sex offender being sued by a woman who was coerced into having underage sex. HArry was no "friend of Epstein." Harry wasn't banned from being a working Royal and having public life in the Royal family, he took himself out of it. Conflating Harry with Andrew is the height of stupidity. You don't have to like Harry or care about him to feel disgust with the tabloids.

Meghan's Mole isn't wrong. though, R170. Harry is a loser. He betrayed his entire family for cash. He's an arrogant prick. A spoiled brat. An asshole. If he's gonna fly 10,000 miles to put in the face time and attend the god damn thing, why can't he lose the ego for five minutes and sing the fucking anthem? It's so petty. It's your father, Harry! He didn't sexually molest you, Harry. He didn't beat you, Harry. He's a human being, too, Harry. Quite different to a tale of taking himself out if it for his own wellbeing which is a bit revisionist of history on his part. These assholes who post crap have no idea what's going on. We were told Harry flew by private jet to the UK. The DM even had a photo of the plane landing. on the tarmac. From Nick Cave's blog regarding his acceptance of the invitation to attend the coronation. I like it.
"'I am not a monarchist, nor am I a royalist, nor am I an ardent republican for that matter,' he wrote on his personal blog The Red Hand.
'What I am also not is so spectacularly incurious about the world and the way it works, so ideologically captured, so damn grouchy, as to refuse an invitation to what will more than likely be the most important historical event in the UK of our age.
'Not just the most important, but the strangest, the weirdest.'"

Harry has said he always felt like an outsider and that he doesn't fit it. He things he doesn't fit in because he is so, so much smarter, cooler, hipper, more enlightened, more progressive and more "healed" than the entire rest of his family. They funny thing about that is, the entire rest of his family (minus Andrew) comports themselves with humility and dignity. The entire rest of his family understand their roles. They understand that they are not celebrities, or rock stars, but rather servants of the people. The entire rest of his family (minus Andrew) do not put themselves above the family and institution that they were so blessed to be born or married into. They are not consumed with self-aggrandizement. And they seem (minus Andrew), also, to be humble and meek before God. None of them are druggies or alcoholics. Indeed, all of Harry's relatives seem to be quite mentally and physically healthy, whole and sound.
So yes, Harry, you are the odd man out. Just not for the reasons you think.

I've been tongue in cheek a lot in my comments about the coronation, but I'm going to be serious for a moment.
I really find the rift between Harry and his family sad. There's enough blame to go on both sides. And each side could have been more conciliatory.
There was no way Harry and Meghan could ever be part-time royals. You're either in or out. It's the nature of the institution. That institution since George V has been guided by duty and service...and today that service is mainly shining a light on philanthropic works..
Meghan Markle was subject to vile, racist abuse by the tabloid press. The Royal Family should have been more forceful in its condemnation of the abuse. Issued a statement and call the editors on the carpet.
As an American and as an actress, I never thought she'd be content to fall in line with how the BRF goes about doing what it does. Perhaps they could have guided her more. And Meghan could have stuck around longer than she did. Diana changed it the way the BRF did things. Meghan over time could have had the same influence.
Meghan, too, could have followed the Queen's advice and turned to Sophie for guidance.
Harry and Meghan wanted celebrityhood over the work required of them. That's wrong.
I also believe they're trying to make money off their titles. They want a celebrity lifestyle. They want adulation, not the work required of royalty.
He ought to be ashamed of himself for that book. There will never be a full reconciliation. The book was cruel. He could have written a loving tribute to his mother. In such a book, he could have described his life of immense privilege and revealed that his father, though loving, was emotionally distant. He could have written from the perspective of the second fiddle...something reflective. Instead, his book was invective.
And the comment about the baby's skin color...that wasn't racist or even unconsciously biased. It was just silly. What was racist was the lady-in-waiting grabbing that woman's hair at Buckingham Palace and grilling her about her origins.

I am very upset with they way Harry and Meghan have behaved. I'm staunchly pro RF in this debate. But God it was really fucking poignant to see Camilla sat on that throne instead of Diana. It hit me like a gut punch this morning. I reckon that William can compartmentalize more easily because he's Prince of Wales, and as such is actively engaged in the ceremony as well as in the institution. But for Harry, as a passive observer? Well, it must have broken his heart into a thousand pieces.

From the clips I've seen of Harry today, especially when he was coming in with the Yorks and seemed to be smiling and chatting - he seemed a lot happier and more at ease than when he was with Meghan at a similar affair at the Jubbly and again at the funeral.
I agree with QEII. He's stuck with an evil boss-lady and the sooner he breaks free, the better. The children have no hope unless she's bored with them. To be stuck with a malignant narcissist is pure hell.
He might never be really accepted at home - but even so, I think he will be so much happier when he's free of her - and when he's back home and relatively free.

He can still be "out" - he can start a reserve in Africa - or probably better still, just get an apartment in London and fiddle around (like he's doing in California but with much less stress.) Andrew would be a great role model.
People are star struck when it comes to royalty. I feel sure he'd come up with a coterie of friends to do drugs with, and party with, etc. And some fuck buddies as well. And he might get lucky enough to find a Camilla. But even if he doesn't, it would be so much better than being stuck in southern California - and with that harridan. And he's a Brit - doesn't belong in Socal. [quote]I’m exactly William’s age… Legitimate question: What happened to him? He appeared to be a bright, self-assured young dude. But he now seems soooooo uptight. Even for a royal.
Isn't it obvious? William is heartbroken, exasperated, and furious at his brother, R302. He's been abandoned and betrayed by the one person that was supposed to have his back in this lifetime. It was always the plan that William would be King but Harry would be right there, by his side. His liege man.
William became persona non grata simply for caring about Harry enough to give his brother a bit of wise counsel. He cautioned Harry to take it slow with MM, and get to know her for awhile. William understood, like everyone else on earth except Harry and MM, that joining the RF is a huge deal. That it can be a massive style cramper. And that it's critical for the woman to be able to make a measured, informed decision f that lifestyle is something she could commit to long term. Spoiled, impulsive Harry spazzed out at the sheer AUDACITY of this measured counsel, and decided that Willy was now his "archenemy" and "nemesis" (Harry's exact words as written in his shady book).
Losing their mother was a tragedy, but it drew the brothers incredibly close. They had each other, and it seemed to be a sacred bond. To have Harry turn on him like this and backstab him, diss the family and the institution, and break their father's heart, totally blew William's mind. To have Harry abandon his role as uncle to William and Kates three young children has also been extremely disappointing and sad.
It's all been pretty extra.
So yeah, William is a bit stressed these days.

In fairness to Charles, he was also probably very overwhelmed to the limits today. Rocky times and stretches over the years regardless, for sure, his mother the Queen had her jubilee and shortly thereafter died, just within this past year; he lost his father the Prince relatively not much longer ago than that; he might be very burdened knowing the dissension going on between his 2 sons and the awkwardness associated with the way Harry came to attend today; he's basically been preparing and waiting for this event for decades...etc.
I sense a bit more deep-down sensitivity, mischeviousness and humor in his personality than his mother had or publicly portrayed; he was raised in a different era surrounded by differing events, after all. I think he's still got more influence and accomplishments under his royal garments' sleeves to surprise us all with. I think his critics should give him a little bit more of a proverbial break at this particular time, is all.
Oh, and Camilla's 1982 Linda Evans "Dynasty" dry-blown hairdo needs definitely to be sheared off and reimagined!!

"Losing their mother was a tragedy, but it drew the brothers incredibly close. "
I don't think that was ever true. Sure, the royal Press Office was talking up the close relationship for years, but according to Harry's awful book, William wouldn't have anything to do with him when they were at school together, never had him over for dinner and telly lwhen they were adults living in apartments at KP.
Now obviously a lot of Harry's report was Harry thinking that nobody in his family was giving him as much attention and spoiling as he thought he deserved, and he thought he deserved infinite attention, but seriously - the princes have led very different lives and don't have much in common as individuals. Just shared trauma, which didn't actually mean a close relationship as adults. I think the Palace greatly exaggerated their closeness.

Adding that I thought it was sad seeing Harry walk into the Coronation and seem to turn, nod and smile to different people seated on both sides of the aisle as he strode down to his seat, while in reality it appeared that nobody was even really engaging or interacting with him to initiate his nods and smiles.
He can't have been surprised this is all happening, given what he and his wife have aired and published in public. Unless he's really that troubled that he just doesn't see it that way. There just was this photo still of him leaving the event getting into his limo, and his face had this look as if he were thinking: 'This was sad, but I suppose this is how things must be with my family from now on...' Yes, it did seem jarring for him literally to leave the ceremony and fly back home immediately, as if he was going just across-state in the U.S. -- but, really, how could he ever have remained and mingled in the festivities longer today, otherwise?

Anything that Harry does is gravy for him and his family.

She looked trim. I really enjoyed the music. Also, Charles was pissed off because William was late and he had to sit in his carriage waiting for William. Charles has declared that if Camilla outlives him, she will be styled as "Queen Mother of her Country", or some such foolery. Seriously, it was on the news earlier today.
She would actually be a "Queen Dowager", not a "Queen Mother", but apparently that's not good enough for Charles.

by Anonymous | reply 406 | May 7, 2023 5:26 AM |
I think it was a mistake not to invite all the senior peers and have them swear loyalty as they did to his mother. The monarchy is fundamentally the pinnacle of the aristocracy. If the aristocracy can be shunted off stage during the coronation, I think it begs the question what is the point of the monarchy? It does not rule. It cannot represent blood and history all by itself. It stands on the shoulders of the aristocracy or it barely stands at all.
by Anonymous | reply 407 | May 7, 2023 5:31 AM |
So let me get this right. William, Kate, and their spawns made the king wait during his own coronation, yet royalist won’t criticize them? But Harry leaves after the service to fly home to his son’s birthday party, and that’s a sign of disrespect?
Shit like this is why there is such a void between the two camps in the public discourse.

by Anonymous | reply 409 | May 7, 2023 5:43 AM |
R393 this isn’t hard. Harry and Meghan hadn’t cut deals at that time. They were working on it but they didn’t get those massive Netflix, Spotify, and book deals at the time when his security detail was removed.
Note, non working Andrew had his security covered by the Queen and King Charles well after exile from public life. So Charles, a billionaire, was being petty. He was also the one to ask if Meghan would keep working when Harry was going to propose because he claimed there wasnt enough money to go around for another person. Tell that to William and Kate plus their three kids.
It was pettiness. Charles is like many narcissists, loves you when you act like a dog on a leash, but will lash out at the first sign of independence.
Removing a royal’s security details is how Diana ended up dead. Charles didn’t give a damn if the same happened to Harry.

No, letting a drunk drive her car is how Diana died, same as anyone who lets a drunk drive their car.

r405, Camilla would simply remain Queen Camilla to differentiate her from Queen Catherine.

R410 No, it isn’t hard.
“Unlike Andrew, he doesn't have to beg Charles for a cent. Harry is the first spare with his own estate. Diana planned it that way.”
Harry did beg both his grandmother and his father repeatedly for money. “He was the first spare with his own money.” Why the begging then? Did his estate magically disappear when he left?
Diana refused security from the palace after her divorce.
She then got into a car with a drunk driver and failed to wear her seatbelt.

So I only got glimpses on my phone of the live ceremony, and I'm watching the rerun now in hi-def... and my initial impressions are totally confirmed.
Charles and Cam look so OLD!
They're in their mid-seventies, and they look old for that age, frail and barely able to stand under the weight of all the gold and ermine heaped on them. Every day I see healthier-looking people in their seventies on the street, every time I go hiking I see people of that age striding along the trails - they aren't fitness models but they're strong and active, they may look a bit doughy but they're still out there and moving at a comfortable pace that still eats up the miles and the altitude. Anne would fit right in on the trails, but Charles and Cam... they look like they're in their late 80s and their children are trying to take away the car keys.

[quote] I’m exactly William’s age… Legitimate question: What happened to him? He appeared to be a bright, self-assured young dude. But he now seems soooooo uptight. Even for a royal.
I think William is far more like Queen Elizabeth II than his brother or father. Both Harry and Charles are unable/unwilling to conceal their feelings, whereas William always seems to be a little unknowable. In public, he is friendly and chatty, but he behaves in ways which are entirely predictable, and that allows him to keep part of his personality private.
This is essentially the way QEII conducted herself throughout her public life. The predictability of her behaviour and the strong grip she had on her emotions were the key to her success as a leader: people knew what to expect from her and could rely on her to react as they expected. And (like William) she managed to keep most of her views entirely private.
For someone with this personality type, it must be especially painful to be the subject of Harry’s writing. Harry has disclosed information which William would never dream of discussing, and has done so safe in the knowledge that he will never respond in kind.
by Anonymous | reply 421 | May 7, 2023 7:40 AM |
R421 gets what a lot of people don't - for a person who's in the public eye, a perfectly smooth facade is a way of keeping their privacy. And to someone who can't escape scrutiny, like a monarch, it's the only real privacy available.
Someone like Elizabeth isn't being forced to stifle their feelings, they are choosing to hide feelings from scrutiny.

R421 William’s own staff member pushed a fake bullying story to the press. He was at demoted or removed from William and Kate’s employee list. Unlike QEII William gleefully plays the tabloid games and will lob grenades back at Charles and Harry. Liz would never do such a thing.
Don’t pretend their PR teams were feuding. William is not like Liz. She always protected her family and the institution. William is fine gettin I’m the mud, which leaves the future King, current king, and defaming looming messy.
by Anonymous | reply 433 | May 7, 2023 12:45 PM |
R432, haven't read anything that answers that question. Yet. But I watched it live yesterday, and Charles' coach pulled up to the Abbey, and he sat there. Then some aid came over to the coach and opened a door and they spoke, then the aide left. Then Charles became very "animated" and he was talking and Camilla was either looking straight ahead or out the other window because she didn't need all that mess. But I was immediately reminded of the moment his pen didn't work and he lost it. He was clearly upset. So my surmise is that he was told William was running late and Charles had an explosion. Which explains William's expression and the tension he displayed when he approached the throne to kiss Papa, and Charles responded "thank you, William"

On another note or rather on the topic of royal health, I noticed the Duchess of Kent aged 90 was absent again as she was at the Queens funeral which makes me believe the rumors about her ailing health and frailty are true. I think her last big event was Harry's,wedding and then one balcony appearance in 2019 pre covid. Her husband the Duke of Kent looks in poor health too. His sistter Princess Alexandra seems to have aged a lot since the platinum jubilee. The Gloucesters through look robust.

R438 Did you even read the book? Have you watched the documentary? Have you been keeping up with all of the commentary? I've been following this closely, in real time, for five years.
From Harry's own mouth and pen has come much of the information about William's many attempts to talk things out with him face to face. There's plenty of commentary on youtube discussing all of this. And the Netflix special shows William having texting Harry, who then, like the wimpy cuck he is, merely holds up his phone to show the text to his minder Meghan, who then exasperatedly says "I don't know. He's YOUR brother. I don't know," and leaves the room.
Harry doesn't want to actually discuss things. Harry doesn't want a two-way conversation. He has a script all written out in his mind, and if William or his father don't telepathically follow the script perfectly, prostrating before hm in apologia, Harry rejects it. This is all on public record.

by Anonymous | reply 448 | May 7, 2023 5:37 PM |
R446 It was from being Order of the Garter (I think its called). He was "entitled" to wear it but was told not to. Prince Harry could have worn some sash or something from the Victorian order but was also asked not to. The reason was "working royals" but Prince Michael of Kent was one row backing wearing his. I think Andrew just threw a temper tantrum and put it on and said what are they going to do? If they actually gave him permission that would be pretty crappy to just give him permission- especially since his own mother didn't let him wear it after the lawsuit payoff.

Now I really want to know if Andrew was asked to skip the cape and regalia, as he most definitely isn't a working royal.
Because I can believe he'd say "Fuck Charles, I'm wearing all the ermine and shit", because this is his last public royal event! He's on Charles's shit list for life, he probably won't even get an invite to the Charles's funeral, because he's also on William's shit list.

I have it on good authority from my friend who lives in London that Kate and William were not getting along all week and there was definite tension between them at the Coronation. William has been particularly edgy and out of sorts, all week. Also was told that the woman William allegedly had an affair with when Kate was pregnant with Louis, her husband has been promoted to some title by Charles and her son was George's partner as one of the pages carrying Charles' coronation robes. Since this is a gossip and rumor site I thought I'd just put this here.

Just curious what brain glitch makes it possible to believe that William, who was a child of a broken home, would cheat on the love of his life and the mother of his children? Both of his parents cheated on each other, and it was hell. And because of the divorce, his mom ended up in Paris with one of her many boyfriend, dead. So we really still think William is that dyregulated, impulsive, slutty and amoral that he'd put his family, reputation and future likability as the King of England in jeopardy? All for the fleeting sense pleasure of getting to dip his wick in a different-scented candle once in awhile?

If Wiliam and Kate ran late to the Coronation you can't blame them. There is a veritable ARMY of staff around them at these events, herding them from place to place and keeping the time to the exact second. Someone in the royal retinue dropped the ball here, either that or there was trouble on the route from KP to the Abbey, either the car or the driver didn't time things properly.
by Anonymous | reply 501 | May 8, 2023 1:47 AM |
They took that video coming out of the house on purpose. THey wanted to show you how great and happy everything is. Something made them late. They have staff and governess Nannies, etc to help everyone get ready On time. The driver didn't mess up. THey have "an army of staff" you're right, R501. So it was something personal, internal that caused them to be late. Maybe one of the kids had a tantrum. Maybe William was puking from nerves all morning. But whatever went wrong had nothing to do with cars or drivers or staffers....IMO

by Anonymous | reply 514 | May 8, 2023 6:39 AM |
R471, the source for the Mail article you linked to about Bette Midler was The Sun.
And, yes this is a gossip board, but I would have thought that you of all people would be aware that 99.5% of "rumours" about the royal family are complete bullshit. Best to refer to actual facts, like the official coronation concert programme, which has been out for weeks and which did not feature Bette Midler. Not to mention all the bullshit about how all the young Brit stars had been asked to perform but had declined because they didn't want to be associated with the "racist" royal family (despite them having been associated with the royal family in the past), when this was quite clearly not a pop concert and there was never any intention of inviting them.
Another example of rumours being invented on the basis of ignorance and people making shit up is the discussion on DL that Andrew must have totally ignored Charles and, on his own initiative, decided to wear a coronation robe even though he is not a working royal and should not have been. Or that they allowed even Andrew to wear a coronation robe but didn't let Harry wear one. Except a quick google of "what was Andrew wearing" at the coronation?" would have shown that he was wearing the robe of the Order of the Garter and not a coronation robe (his didn't even look like a coronation robe).
As for Eugenie, she doesn't completely hate her cousin Harry. That doesn't mean that she has fallen out with the rest of her family, though, for which there was never any evidence, only evidence that she supports her uncle and cousin William.

Their young family is lovely and it bodes well for the future .

I thought Prince William's comments last night at the end of the Concert were very definitive. Charles and William are going to make it all about Service in a very conspicuous way. And I think they will engage the community differently as well. There will be more of a "Let's all work together" atmosphere promoted. "I Serve" has been the motto, traditionally, but it will now be expressed in a different way

Well, R522, I think that's the point I wanted to make. The way Charles and William will define "I serve." I think both Charles and William want to do more than cut ribbons. I think Sophie would probably agree. Not sure about Edward, but he'd probably go along with it as well. You have the old school types who will cut the ribbons, but Charles wants more substance to their functioning. Anne, the Gloucesters, Kents, etc can cut the ribbons and shake hands. These others may develop a more activist role. Hands on.

by Anonymous | reply 526 | May 8, 2023 2:31 PM |
R526, today has been described as a day to help out, a day of service in the Uk as it is a bank holiday. To illustrate and encourage it William, Catherine and the kids are out with the scouts hauling wheelbarrows and using farm equipment planting gardens or whatever. There are a lot of ways to serve and t o encourage service and build a sense of community. Charles meeting with environmental groups as an advocate, and encouraging projects that put the environment as their primary focus. There's a lot they can do to indirectly influence public opinion politically without uttering a "political" word.
by Anonymous | reply 527 | May 8, 2023 2:44 PM |
Why does public service have to involve political activism, r526? Do you even follow what your king and his heir and the other working royals do? Just the very fact of different social groups, communities and public workers coming together and being celebrated at the coronation concert was a piece of public service.
I get that it's weird for Canada to have the British monarch as their head of state, especially as you have no connection to what he does every day of the week, but perhaps inform yourself before commenting. You're also welcome to become a republic.
See link for a general overview of what he does in terms of service.
It should also be remembered that the monarch is also the British head of state and that is a whole job in itself, which involves important constitutional and diplomatic activities.

Here's some thing from the Royal Family's instagram account that makes the point perfectly: "The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh joined Hollie, Lucy, Luker, Nyla and Sunny and their volunteer puppy raisers at a special training class that celebrated the weekend’s festivities with a coronation-themed café. The interactive class focused on skills to help the puppies on their journey to become a guide dog and activities included participating in a recall session; food manners and how to refocus pups in a café situation."
The pictures of Sophie and Edward in casual clothes actually interacting with the trainers and the dogs is a lot different from the previous concept of the monarchy. Elizabeth shook hands and cut ribbons and cakes. This next generation and the one after it will do much more. Today is called #TheBigHelpOut It really is the only way forward for the Monarchy. It makes William and Catherine's contemporaries, and even those of Charles' generation, Royals in other European countries, look old and out of date.

R528, I really don't consider Charles as my head of state, even though it says so on paper. He is a foreigner who lives far away. In the rare case when things go so awry in the Canadian parliament that there are no clear rules on how to proceed and the Governor General has to intervene, I wonder how much the GG relies on advice from the British monarch. I honestly wouldn't expect the monarch to be that familiar with Canadian parliamentary procedure and precedent and Canadian politics in general. I don't think the king or queen would be that helpful when it comes to giving advice.
I don't follow what the royals do. I know they all have their various charities but most of what we get here in the news are the scandals, eg. Sarah Ferguson trying to sell access to Prince Andrew, Andrew's connection to Jeffrey Epstein, etc. Of course, the entertainment news dwells on fashion faux pas and speculation on which prominent royals have strained relationships.
I see you're heavily invested in the monarchy, R528. If it were abolished, there are other people who could do their charity work.
I honestly would take a very cold blooded approach to the monarchy and do a cost benefit analysis. I would try my best to estimate how much money the royal family generates for the British economy (which I'm sure is hard to do with any accuracy) and how much the royal family costs to support. If they were a net liability, I would consider abolishing the monarchy. Of course, then you have to convince the majority of British people to go along with that.

R537 I'm Canadian as well and personally think it's ridiculous that the British Monarch is still our titular head of state. Virtually all of the monarch's "powers" have been transferred to the Governor General and I think the only power the King still has in Canada is to appoint a Governor General which he does on the advice of the Prime Minister. That being said, and I might be in the minority on this, I'm actually not keen on an elected head of state. Seeing what has happened in America and the also the leader of our political parties, I would rather Charles than a President Trudeau or President Poilievre. Although I think it would make the most sense to just elevate the Governor General to being the full head of state and be done with it (though I'm aware the constitutional amendment formula makes it virtually impossible to remove the Crown and we will be the last Commonwealth Realm to become a republic).
by Anonymous | reply 540 | May 8, 2023 4:57 PM |
R540 I'm Yank but half my family is Canadian. When I asked them about keeping Charles as Canadian Head of State they told me they were not keen on it BUT it unified the country. If Canada dumped Charles then Quebec would take this as a signal to break with Canada and the whole Québécois National movement would flare up again. So they are stuck. That's what they told me.

Eyes of the beholder, and all that.
I see dignified man in his senior years at age 74, who has been trained by the best (QEll) to assume the role of King of the United Kingdom and his other Commonwealth realms. I see him as the most experienced man on the planet to assume the role. He looks entirely regal in his first official portrait, albeit a bit unassuming as it is said he is a bit shy at times, as one would be posing as King for their first time.

You're adorable, R543. I seriously doubt that the U.K. and Canadian parliaments are identical in all their details. The situations when the Governor General has to intervene in Canada's parliament are very rare and very specific. R543, how did a Brit like you become an expert on the minute details of Canada's parliamentary procedure?
I really doubt that the abolition of the monarchy would result in Quebec separating from Canada, R541. I think separatism is a dying dream of Quebec baby boomers and I doubt younger generations are as keen about it. I vaguely remember some former Quebec premier (Jacques Parizeau? after the very close result in the referendum?) gloating in his autobiography that he used the threat of separation to gain all kinds of concessions and special privileges for Quebec during negotiations with the prime minister. I think the Quebec government has enough special powers that other provinces don't have that they won't be separating any time soon.

R543, I seriously doubt Queen Liz would be giving a lot of advice to Governor General Michaelle Jean on this situation but then again you would know so much more about it than I would. Maybe you were in the same room as the Queen when she was talking on the phone with the GG.

R557, I'm sure that Cammie's undergarments were industrial-strength, but for a solid woman of 75... only so much can be done.

"He is not stupid. "Low cognitive functioning"? What is that crap? What's likely is he is quite dyslexic and perhaps other reading processing issues."
R529, I read Harry's horrid book, and recommend that you do to. Because if you read the book, you can look through Harry's eyes... and see him failing to understand what he's seeing right in front of him. He rants about the Palace press office, because he doesn't understand that they're there to serve the monarchy and not make him look good. He beholds Meg being two-faced and using his fear to manipulate him, and believes only what she tells him to believe. He sees regular folks doing stuff he doesn't like, and assumes they're motivated by spite or jealousy, because he doesn't understand the normal need to earn a living. He looks at the tunnel where his mother died, and decides that the press HAD to be responsible for her death, because it looks easy enough for a drunk driver to handle. Etc.
I don't know what the hell Harry's problem is, whether it's a processing disorder, low cognitive functioning, a personality disorder, being spoiled so rotten that he's incapable of understanding reality, all of the above, or other. But there's something deeply wrong with him mentally, he can't turn information into understanding.

Because all the snarky bitches and memes think he's someone in disguise, possibly a woman. Possibly Meghan.

I felt bad for the people who had to march after the horses left their droppings in the road. You couldn't step around it and mess up the order so you just marched through it.
I'm glad Harry attended the ceremony but I understand why he wouldn't want to attend any functions afterwards. This was supposed to be his father's day. He didn't want to pull focus and have tongues wagging (although they are anyway) from KC3 and QC. At least that's my opinion. He wasn't/didn't feel welcome to attend any after-celebrations so he went home to his family. How many of us wouldn't have liked to make an appearance at a family function and then get the hell outta there?

I agree with you. I believe he made the better decision. The press is trying to create something that just might not be there. So what he sat in the 3rd row. The 3rd row is better seating than the 5th or 10th row. Had he attended the luncheon (and I don't blame him for skipping out on that. Coronation Quiche? SHEESH!) the attention would not have been on his father but more about the court intrigue nonsense
by Anonymous | reply 568 | May 8, 2023 9:26 PM |
Has anyone made the Coronation Quiche? I plan to one of these days, as it's a reasonably inexpensive vegetarian dish.

by Anonymous | reply 592 | May 9, 2023 4:23 AM |
If an example were needed of "anti-climax", one need look no further than the Coronation of King Charles III. No one was interested, everyone was going through the motions. If it weren't for the Archbishop of Canterbury, whose job it obviously was to keep the show rolling and on course, the whole snore-fest would have ground to a complete halt out of sheer indifference. Yes, the late Queen is an impossible act to follow, and Charles is well aware that he is but a very pale shadow of his mum's true majesty. But the coronation didn't simply signal the end of an era, but rather was a harbinger of the waning of an institution, of a country and mentality that was but no longer is, of the last vestiges of the belief in this realm, this England.
Big show of non-CofE Xtian clergy, while the Jews, Muslims, Hindus, etc clergy. were excluded, relegated to the church entrance to receive a few seconds of the King's favor upon his exit. England may highlight a bit of non-white flesh in the interest of social harmony, but its Xtian dominance and bigotry are proudly unassailable.
I don't image that there will be a whole lot for William to take on when his time comes to inherit the crown. Perhaps that should be not when, but if.

R529 It’s well known that Harry is stupid. He failed the entrance exam to Eton. He required “assistance” to pass art. He didn’t attend university like William because he didn’t the have the intellectual capacity to succeed there. He failed his pilot’s exam multiple times. He left the army because he couldn’t pass the promotional exam.
