Seriously? Really?
Charles and Camilla and/or the unhoused guy and his partner living in the subway station, have a reasonable expectation of privacy when they're engaged in private, two-party telephone conversation.
The sleazy act is recording that conversation in the first place, whether intentional or accidental, and then selling it.

You only get to be the Queen Mother if you are the mother of a sitting monarch. If Charles died tomorrow, Camilla could not be Queen Mother because she is not William's mother. She would be HM the Dowager Queen Camilla, but the press would continue to refer to her as "Queen Camilla" (as to distinguish her from Kate, who would be The Queen, or Queen Catherine).

A lot of gay men in the UK still remember the impact Diana had when she shook the hand of a man with AIDS. I don't know if Camilla was playing the long game, but almost feel trapped into it.
Wasn't it in Tina Brown's book on Diana that posited that Camilla would have been content to stay Charles's mistress? However, once Charles was determined to marry her, she made the most of it and stepped up to do her duty as his consort and member of the royal family.
She's not flashy, like Diana, but it appears she's been a stabilizing force for Charles, who clearly loves her more than she loves him.
Personally, I like that she's low-key.

Mary Tudor was a religious fanatic who had 300 Englishmen burned at the stake in pursuit of her policy of subjugating England to The Pope. She placed a Spanish prince on the throne, got England involved in a disastrous war and lost the last of England’s territorial possessions on the European mainland.

She was being crowned Queen, after decades of being abused as ugly and as the most hated woman in the kingdom (and abroad), so it was unlikely that her own children (and others who sustained her through the years) were ever going to languish in the cheap seats.

R55 totally agree. Camilla would probably have been very content as his companion, living in the country with her horses, gin and the occasional shag with Charles. by Anonymous | reply 79 | May 6, 2023 8:27 PM |
No, R79, royal titles are passed through bloodlines or marriage. They could in theory lobby for a title vis a vis Charles, but they do not seem to have any interest in that.
"The i newspaper spoke with Professor Judith Rowbotham, visiting research professor at the University of Plymouth who is an expert on royal affairs, who said: “They have deliberately chosen to continue living as private citizens.
“Despite being stepbrother and stepsister to Charles’s two sons, during the 17 years of their mother’s marriage, they have rarely appeared or wanted to appear in the public domain. Laura Lopes in particular, has chosen to keep a very low profile and seems to show no desire to be part of the wider monarchical institution.”

Save your poor neck, R112. Charles and Diana's marriage was loveless, toxic, and dead on arrival—with or without Camilla. They had absolutely nothing in common, no chemistry, and little understanding or even respect for one another. If the Queen had allowed Charles to marry Camilla, whom he was already madly in love with, instead of forcing him to marry a Spencer, Diana would still be alive.
And there isn't a single married royal or aristocrat, dead or alive, that hasn't quietly taken a side-piece or ten. It's just how it's done, as Philip often said.

The entire mess today was religious bullshit.
Aside from that pathetic mess. Camilla should be ashamed for continuing in a relationship with a married man, and participating in the downfall of two marriages. Charles should also be ashamed for agreeing to marry someone he had no feelings for, and then continuing the relationship he started with an already married woman with children no less, thus ruining Diana's life, messing with their own children's heads, and becoming a major embarrassment. It's all disgusting. Charles and Camilla should die in a grease fire. I detest both of them.

Their families kept them apart. Her father fucking posted her engagement announcement in the newspaper before her husband even proposed!

Melania proved to young women across America you can be a porn model posing for pictures with fingers up your twat, and a high-end call girl, and become First Lady. Again, what a role model.

Charles destroyed his own marriage. It was on shaky ground from the start. He married a girl barely out of her teens whom he did not love and with whom he had nothing in common. He gave up on the relationship completely after he did his royal duty to impregnate her with an heir and a spare.

I've never had any animosity over Camilla, I'd love to sit and have some drinks with her. She seems like she'd be fun with a bawdy sense of humor.
She and Charles should've been allowed to marry in the 70s but unfortunately the archaic rules about the heir to the throne marrying a virgin with a saintly reputation were still in place. Charles had to marry Diana, who was too young and immature for him and they had nothing in common. It was doomed from the start. They both got bored and exasperated with each other early on and sought companionship elsewhere. It was nobody's fault, the whole marriage was totally untenable.

by Anonymous | reply 176 | May 8, 2023 2:43 AM |
The tragedy for Charles and Diana was that they never really knew each other until they were already married. Diana’s childhood had left her feeling abandoned by her mother and craving affection from her difficult, patrician father. As a result, she was great at concealing her own likes and interests and making men feel drawn to her, but underneath she was a needy mess. Charles thought he was getting a young, easygoing beautiful bride who shared his interests in opera and the outdoors, whereas he was actually marrying a woman who was his opposite in every respect and who required a level of emotional commitment and mature understanding that his upbringing left him entire unable to provide.
Diana thought she was getting a fairytale, romantic prince, when in fact she was getting an anxious insecure man who was buckling under familial and societal pressure for him to get married to someone deemed appropriate. I would have thought his predicament would be familiar to at least a few of the eldergays on this website!
by Anonymous | reply 177 | May 8, 2023 2:45 AM |
My problem with her is that she was involved with a married man with children, and then after those children lost their mother and she married into the family she was still an asshole to them. To the point that she sold them out regularly to the media to boost her own popularity. She has no shame. It makes her ugly on the inside and outside and yet we have to see her plastered on the TV getting a big ass crown on her head.
by Anonymous | reply 178 | May 8, 2023 2:45 AM |
I don't like Camilla and thank she is the source of many of the issues in that family, but ultimately I don't give a fuck. He loved her, he got her, and now they're together end of story. What I find fascinating is the way she turned her image around. It's been reported that Charles spent a small fortune to do it, but I never thought Dataloungers would buy into it. But I guess they have - given some of Cammie's defenders. "Oh she's just an old horsey woman living in the country and riding horses and smoking her methols and doesn't care about any of this." Bullshit.
by Anonymous | reply 179 | May 8, 2023 2:47 AM |
I think context is everything. I'm not condoning adultery. But in their set, it was common and accepted. A wealthy aristocratic group of socialites who partied together and played musical beds. And it wasn't unique. It was like that for generations. Back in the 20's and 30's and 40's and 50's as well. And when Margaret started hanging out with Anthony Armstrong Jones and his set. Margaret's friends were pretty wild bunch. Combine them with Jones's and it was combustible. Diana's mother ran off with another man. For years Diana thought she abandoned her family until the truth of her own father's violent, abusive behavior came out. The upper classes, high society was rotten to the core when it came to fidelity to one's spouse, or an intact family life. Being faithful to one true love was for fairytales.
The other thing is that people often talk about Diana thinking Charles, her crush, her Prince Charming would sweep her off her feet and she'd live in a castle and be a princess. But I rarely ever read about how Charles must have felt about her. I think he found her delightful and fun when he met her while dating her sister. But once she became old enough to consider, he probably made a lot of assumptions about her.On one had, she was sort of innocent and he thought she would be compliant. He also f elt that because she came from the aristocratic upper class she would "get" what it meant to be part of the RF. They were at cross purposes from the start. It was ill fated from the start without any help from Camilla.

I watched the coronation. It was fabulous. I love the pomp, pageantry and ceremony. But still, I am team Diana forever.
Charles and Camilla abused Diana from the early days and through her marriage. Charles and Camilla may be somewhat likable now that they are seniors in their '70s, but 30-40 years ago they were abusive, destructive and mean people to Diana, her sons and to the monarchy in general. Just in case you were wondering where Harry gets his vindictive, arrogant personality--look no further than his father, Charles.

by Anonymous | reply 202 | May 8, 2023 1:25 PM |
R183, I think her reputation was formed by association with the set she and Charles hung out with. They were young, wealthy, wild people. Very similar, in their way, to the kind of people Princess Margaret used to socialize and party with. I think there was a feeling the Queen mother had and Phillip and others in that closed circle, that there were people you partied with and had fun with, but these were not the sort you planned your life with.
Going back another generation, the Duke of Windsor partied hard and was a licentious, hedonistic pig as a young man, and of course because he was a man they let him have his "space" but they all assumed he'd settle down and do the right thing as he matured and faced his responsibilities. He didn't. According to Tommy Lascelles, who hated him, He always had to have that one woman he was in "love with" who was usually married, or otherwise unacceptable, even before Freda Dudley Ward, but in addition, he was always seducing the married women he encountered on his travels. Lascelles was his secretary when he was Prince of Wales and actually quit and resigned he was so disgusted by then Prince of Wales behavior.
As I look back on Charles III life as a much younger man, the social set he and Camilla partied with were pretty tame compared to previous generations, but still made Camilla unacceptable from his Granny, and his father's point of view. It is possible that the shadow of Edward the VIII loomed over them and colored Granny's opinions and worries about Charles. But they need not have because Charles, while he may have developed a distorted perspective in his social life, was a much more serious young man than his Great Uncle David, and understood and accepted his future life as king, as David never did. .The other thing to consider is that Camilla herself was not ready to consider a Royal Life, back then. She was fine with them having their affair, with no pressure or expectation of marriage. At least at first. The restrictions and expectations of such a life as was required by being in the Royal Family, were a huge turn off for her. And even now, she will take a break and go to her own estate and chill out for a few days. Charles is a lot even without the Royal King stuff.

In all seriousness, Camilla will become a dowager queen, although she would likely retain the title Her Majesty Queen Camilla instead of “Dowager Queen Camilla.”
Unfortunately for Camilla, if she outlives Charles she will become one of the few living queens whose child didn’t become monarch. Therefore, she will be completely dependent on Williams’ generosity regarding her title.
by Anonymous | reply 215 | May 8, 2023 4:49 PM |
According to seemingly credible accounts I've read (Tina Brown, Vanity Fair) William has been on good terms with Camilla for a very long time.
I know, I know. I enjoy reading about rifts and trouble more than boring good terms, but still, I believe those accounts and that he accepted Camilla a long time ago.
Also, maybe Charles is like many other parents, mine included. They wouldn't have stood for their children dictating to them who their companions will, or, will not, be.
I'm not saying you don't keep a careful eye out for abuse, but in the absence of financial, physical, mental or emotional abuse, when you boil it down, it's not the business of a child to butt-in on another person's relationship.

It would be unprecedented for a new sovereign to take away the title of queen from a widowed queen. William would become unpopular if he did that to an old woman, especially given that he has pretended for years to get along with her (if he took it away, he would be revealed as a terrible hypocrite--in real world terms, not in DL terms).
It is exceptionally unlikely he would ever take away her title. That would only happen on a show like "The Royals."

"Dowager" for widowed queens and peeresses went out with weeds and long veils deeply trimmed with crape.
Relict of KC3 should Queen Camilla outlive her husband will likely be known as just that. It's hardly likely people are going to confuse two living queens (Camilla and Katherine).
Considering how Camilla got shot of "consort" can't see her reverting to something equally ancient as "dowager".

You all exaggerate Camilla's looks. She really isn't that bad looking for a 75-year-old. "Therefore, she will be completely dependent on Williams’ generosity regarding her title."
Camilla is an anointed queen, title is hers for life, period. There is nothing a "king" William could do that would reverse things.
Anne Boleyn was divorced and stripped of her royal rank and queen status before being put to death.
Catherine of Aragon had her marriage annulled (or divorced) and thus Henry VIII reverted her styles and rank back to widow of his late brother. Neither of above would apply to CPB.
Queens of England/Great Britain keep their titles for rest of their lives even if widows.

Rather oddly, Anne of Cleves was known as the King's Beloved Sister after her divorce. Not sure how that made much sense, but of course, Anne was too smart to argue about those particular semantics. And hey, free palace and you get to keep your head!

by Anonymous | reply 237 | May 9, 2023 3:14 AM |
R235
That bit of fiction came as a solution for what to do with Anne of Cleves rank and status wise.
Henry VIII didn't want Anne of Cleves going back to Germany and or otherwise "to play the woman" and tell all sorts of stories about how she was treated by the king. This included his failure to consummate their marriage. Henry VIII could slag off Anne of Cleves all he wanted and his ministers along with doctors could equally claim the king was still "Jack the Lad". But reading between lines of what came later with Catherine Howard the king was impotent. Jane Boleyn, Viscountess Rochford spells this out in damning letters that sent herself to the Tower along with Queen Catherine.
Anne of Cleves herself was in no mood to return in disgrace to Germany. No one would believe the great King Henry VIII hadn't used her as a wife and thus finding another husband would prove difficult.
Because Anne of Cleves marriage to Henry VIII was annulled, along with fact the former gladly went along the king was quite generous. By making his ex-wife now is "sister" Anne of Cleves was given status above all ladies at court behind princesses Mary and Elizabeth. Upon this was piled on lots of wealth and other bits that were more due a daughter of an English king than a disgraced wife.

"Therefore, she will be completely dependent on Williams’ generosity regarding her title."
Another thing some of you Americans need to get through your thick skulls; this isn't 1500's or 1400's any longer. A monarch cannot strip anyone of their property including rank and titles without going through Parliament.
As with Queen Catherine and others it would take a Bill of Attainder read and passed in Parliament then given royal assent to strip persons of property, titles and so on. Henry VIII got his way with Queen Catherine, but find it difficult to imagine any circumstance where Queen Camilla would be hauled into Parliament to answer a Bill of Attainder.
Beastly as Prince Harry has behaved things would also have to go that way for HRH to be formally stripped of his royal and noble titles. That's just not ever going to happen, Ditto for Prince Andrew, the Duke of York.
As with in 1917 when King George V passed the Titles Deprivation Act so he could remove British titles of several German and Austrian royals during the First World War, things would still have to go through Parliament. British monarchs simply do not have power on their own to strip royal nor noble personages of their styles and or titles.
When it comes to women who marry into BRF and thus gain royal status there a monarch does have some leeway. This since the style of HRH devolved upon such women as consequence of their marriage, as with everything else the titles and styles belonged to their husbands with wives granted customary use.
This is why Elizabeth II was able to remove royal status from both Diana, Princess of Wales and Sarah, Duchess of York along with any subsequent divorcees of royal princes via letters patent.

She will simply be called Queen Camilla if Charles predeceases her. The Queen Mother was only called that because she had the same first name and basic style of her daughter. Having two "Queen Elizabeths" would be confusing, but not so with Queen Camilla as dowager and (presumably) Queen Katherine as consort.

It is 100% pure fiction that Camilla is a low key country girl who never wanted to be queen. Pretending she’ll just retire to live the simple life in some bolt hole is hilarious.
Fact: Camilla sought out ruthless PR professionals to help rehabilitate her image following Diana’s death, and more than a few times she threw William and Harry under the bus for her benefit.
by Anonymous | reply 271 | May 9, 2023 3:33 PM |
R271 you would be er have said that if Harry hadn't alleged it. The arguement before his memoirs was that Charles had hired PR to make her look better.
It's very easy when you're the one being subjected to negative press to claim "What about him?" and feel it's a plot against you. If the RF are so much in cahoots with the newspapers then how do you explain all the years or negative press Kate got? Or Charles being an out-of-touch eccentric who talks to his plants? Or Edward being shiftless and the suggestion he was gay?
The only negative press I remember Harry receiving pre-2018 was getting in trouble for smoking weed at Eton, his nazi uniform gaffe, alleged cheating in his A-levels and that racist video he recorded in the army. The ironic thing is he got more positive press than anyone besides The Queen up until he decided the press were his enemy.

You know, clearly the tabloids loved the scandal and the back and forth when Charles' infidelity was exposed and Diana was giving interviews and it came out that Diana called her The Rottweiler. That was a real mud slinging slug fest. But Camilla suffered for it too. The problem with all of this, including Camilla's attempts to rehab her image, is that there were so many actors involved in various camps you never know who was involved. I mean ignoring, for example Diana's siblings would be folly. THey knew people too. Media types. Did Charles Spencer or Diana's sisters leak nasty things about Camilla? There are a lot of theories out here about who threw who under the bus, but it could have come from anywhere. Altho I can't see Diana's family trying to harm her kids. OTOH, the possibility of Andrew underhandedly attempting to distract from his own troubles is always possible. The factions and the intrigues inside a Royal court ( staff, etc.) and they each had their own networks and individuals who would want to gain the upper hand, etc. It was just a mess.

"Middletons would receive titles when their daughter becomes queen."
Highly unlikely, especially since trend for past few decades now has been to shrink the peerage more so at more exalted ranks. Though you never know, maybe Mr. Middleton would be given a life peerage or maybe something lower on scale for "services to the nation". Same as Edward VIII elevated brewers, bankers and others in industry and commerce.
Thing to watch is if CPB's children or grandchildren are risen up. If that happens then all bets are off regarding Middleton family.

Even holding a life peerage gets one noticed when "Baron/Baroness" or whatever is attached to one's name. Why do you think for ages now lowly civil servants (who since 1900's largely and increasingly have been drawn from middle classes) are given titles and other awards.

If you just don't understand British society I can't help you.
Again it has long been and still is having a title attached to one's name is quite a big deal far as many Britons are concerned. Whether it gets one better tables at restaurants is up for debate, but it does look good in print to have various letters attached to one's name.
Comedies such as "Keeping Up Appearances" are popular in UK because they play upon social farce. Hyacinth Bouquet's endless social climbing and deference to anyone with a title is something not unknown in real life.

"Call us when someone young takes the throne"
Define "young".
Prince or Wales is aged 40 now. If HM lives ten years that would make Prince William in his fifties when he inherits. Should HM's strong Hanoverian, Scandinavian and bit of other mix genes kick in KC3 may live another twenty or so years.
Elizabeth II lived until 96 and Prince Phillip reached 99 years of age. Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother beat them both living until age 101. Princess Margaret checked out comparatively early at aged 71, but HRH smoked like a chimney and drank like a sailor. George VI also was a heavy smoker but the added stress of his unexpectedly becoming monarch likely helped do HM in at an early age of 51.
Leaving aside adultery with CPB KC3 seems to have or has few other vices. HM has long practiced a healthy lifestyle which includes yoga. HM may prove to be quite long lived leaving the Prince of Wales cooling his jets for better part of two decades or bit longer.
by Anonymous | reply 299 | May 11, 2023 10:08 AM |
Maybe the Brits should take up R298's idea. The new rule will be that when the monarch dies, you go down the line of succession until you get to the first heir who's under 30—thus George would have succeeded this time and Charles would have been carrying *his* train. No one would ever have to look at a wrinkled, wheezing new king or queen ever again; every reign would begin in the golden glow of youth, or in this case pre-adolescence.

After some consideration, I've decided that the huge ceremony, all the elaborate pomp for Elizabeth's coronation, was to legitimize her reign because she was so young and because she was a woman. Once Victoria died all we had was men. And we were just coming out of a war, so having this young wife and mother on the throne was quite different in many many ways. To insure the monarchy was still recognized with the reverence and institutional legitimacy it needed to survive they wanted to make sure the public saw it in an historical context that went beyond Elizabeth II.
by Anonymous | reply 310 | May 11, 2023 1:11 PM |
For the loons that don't have a clue nearly from moment after George VI inherited the Princess Elizabeth began her education befitting next monarch. Princess Elizabeth was heiress presumptive and as George VI and his consort had no plans for breeding again it was nearly certain their eldest daughter would become queen.
OTOH Victoria I came to the throne totally ignorant of how to be a monarch as she wasn't taught anything about constitutional matters or government. Her mother's plan was to keep Alexandrina Victoria totally ignorant and thus reliant upon herself for advice. Queen Victoria said "sod that" and moment she became monarch was her own boss.
Sadly or for good depending upon how one views things it fell to William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne who was Victoria's first prime minister to teach HM politics and how to be queen. Sad bit comes in because Viscount Melbourne favored a British monarch with weaker powers and less influence over Parliament. This was the beginning in a shift of power from monarch to government.
Victoria's long period mourning after death or Prince Albert when she shut herself up away from London also influenced the shift in power. Successive prime ministers maneuvered around the Queen including finally bringing Prince of Wales into picture, something Victoria steadfastly refused to countenance.

R310, I disagree. I think the British or at least the English prefer female monarchs. It's weird but I think they are defensive of them. Elizabeth was beautiful at that point and there was a whole Faerie Queen thing being created by the coronation. Similar to Victoria. Disreali was big on that and so was Churchill. Hence the regret now that it isn't Anne ascending the throne. Although she's more a warrior queen like Elizabeth I than a Faerie Queen.
The English like a queen!
