Tasteful Friends - nice old Victorian in Eureka, California - right sized and reasonable at 699K
Its a bit tired inside in parts and the furniture is utter shiite, looks like it was whatever they found at a local charity shop to fill the rooms with the exception of one reasonably nice walnut sideboard. The rest can go in the skip as far as I'm concerned.
The positives- its beautifully presented on the outside, and the landscaping such as it is is nice, and it has a roomy double garage, unusual for a home this age (1898). And it retains a lot of its period details, and more could be added. I even like the wallpaper! Even most of the light fittings are not too bad. The kitchen needs freshening but not being much of a cook I'd be happy to paint the cabinetry white and call it good. It does look pretty well maintained overall

For a Victorian, it's very airy. Almost like it isn't there.

They must have taken that picture on the one sunny day Eureka has each year.

Dont know the area R4, but we havent sun for a couple of weeks here either, but a LOT of rain. Overcast I can do fine, constant drizzle/ downpours/ showers not so much. I thought California was mostly pretty dry, I know they have some serious water shortages there

Water damage on ceiling/wall corners on the interior walls !! of some main rooms.

R6 only thing I can see that looks like that is one corner near the fireplace in the lounge (room with the beautiful wooden fireplace surround and hideous black vinyl three piece lounge suite)
This house calls for period furniture, and lots of it. I could have fun filling this place up

I guess you love this house R8. I find it spartan and OK. this fireplace isn't "BEAUTIFUL!" it's meagre and functional. In my opinion.

R9 I would like something more ornate for sure, but this house could easily be upgraded into something truly spectacular, the interior gives off a spartan vibe because of the shit furniture

Well you be you. This house is spartan to me and I like the second floor because of that. I think the whole house should be furnished and decorated in a minimal style so every piece has a function and a good design. I like all the window. I think it's a house that would suit a person with autism who is as exact and economical with all the furnishing as the builder was when it went up. Then it would be quite peaceful. I rented houses like this when I was in college and they go very well with simple student furnishing.

R10 well you don't know much about period construction. Its a modest construction for the time. Charmingly so.

R12 we dont have a lot of Victorians down under, so I'll be the first to admit I dont know period construction well, particularly in the US

Even in a small seaside town in extreme northern California, I'm shocked at how low the price is. As far as the wet & gloomy weather is concerned, I love it. I'd spend every day curled up with a book and when the sads would come on I'd sit under a sunlamp.

R13 I see that explains. Well this is a mixture of a few styles, particularly Italianate rather than victorian, but the quality of construction matches average "farmhouse gothic". They are called "farmhouse" but could be towns all over America, too. The simple design, sturdy and massive newal on that narrow stair for example.
It might even have a stone walled cellar. Is it mentioned? pictured?

The price is great for any livable house in California, but like most Victorians it's just a bunch of small, useless rooms

Ok I answered myself. Foundation Details: Concrete Perimeter, Post/Piers

Love it, but...
the wallpaper is hideous.
The bathrooms need redoing.
Water damage need taking care of.
The slatted doors of closets need to be replaced.
Must cost a mint to heat in the winter.
What's Eureka like?

Thats the other thing. Many of these houses have thin, uninsulated walls.

Eureka is many hours away from even a mid-sized city.

^ The pictures of Eureka make it look like one of those towns in the movies right before the ghosts/aliens/flock of birds come in to destroy it š³
