Give yourself a buzz cut?

Got my hair buzzed off at a neighborhood barber shop a week or so ago. $38.

Before they started they told me, “If we use more than one setting on the clippers, or we need to use scissors, there’ll be an additional charge.”

It was actually $30 for the cut. But with tax and tip, it came to $38. That seems really expensive, doesn’t it? No, this wasn’t one of those fancy shops where they give you coffee or beer or they shampoo you. Just the haircut.

Now I’m thinking I should be able to do it myself. Any advice?

In my city you can buy your own clippers from the $2 shop. But they have a short life span, depending on how often they are used of course. Maybe 2 years?

Giving yourself a Picard saves a lot of bother.

Make it so.

That you ask the question doesn't invite much trust in your self confidence and craftiness. It's easy as pie to give oneself a buzz cut. I did it through the worst of the lockdowns during COVID. Buy a decent clipper, not a bargain tool.

I’ve done the shaved head thing before. I don’t mind the way it looks on me. But it’s very high maintenance. Because I hate the way it looks when it starts to grow out. On some men it’s nice. On me, well, I look like a mental patient. So I prefer to buzz it and keep it short.

i started during covid.....never went back to the barber

What city? NYC or LA, maybe. Boise, probably not.

by Anonymousreply 7May 5, 2023 1:27 AM

Only if I’m mostly balled…which I’m not.

Same. I've gotten good at it and am saving almost $400/year.

I would look terrible with a buzz cut, so no.

But paying that much for someone to basically mow your hair with clippers is ludicrous. Guys in high school had DIY buzz cuts so it can't be that hard.

I've been cutting my own hair for more than 10 years. The clippers make it easy; they're technically "beard trimmers," but have all the settings I need for my own hair.

You'll get the hang of it...and of course there are youtube videos and all that stuff.

I started cutting my husband's hair during covid, and he hasn't gone back to the barber. It's quick, cheap, and convenient.

R8 "Balled" - that's hot

by Anonymousreply 12May 5, 2023 1:41 AM

Thanks, everyone! I’ll get clippers tomorrow.

I've been doing my own hair for close to a decade now, it's incredibly easy and the sidecut I do is super nice. Cost wasn't really a motivating factor though, because I was paying around ten bucks (converted from euros) for a basic male haircut. You gringos are getting scammed with those prices, a hairdresser should not be making that much money.

I used to go to a Hispanic barbershop to get my hair cut; the barberos were better and cheaper. Always soccer on the TV, often kids running around, the classic combs in blue disinfectant and little tissue collars for my shirt.

We couldn't understand one another but "dos" (pointing to the top of my head) and "uno" (sides) was easy enough. The best was they'd finish the hairline with a disposable razor blade, making it look sharp.

R8 are you a chav or scally? They have a thing for balling during clipper cuts.

by Anonymousreply 16May 5, 2023 9:28 AM

I have always cut my own hair.

I come from a family of beauticians and my sister showed me how to part my hair on the sides, pick how long I want it to cut with the click on combs and go to town. I cut the top with a comb and scissors. The only hard part is cleaning up the neck with a mirror and a mirror. Plain simple guy cut. I have saved thousands of dollars over the decades.

I remember going to a barber for a buzzcut. They gave me a young guy that must have been on his first day. He did me and an older man came over to clean up the antenna the young guy had left sticking up from my head.

I buzz my own. It’s only a summer thing, otherwise I have a fade. Barber dies the fade and it’s $55 w/ tip. HK, Trimmed. Johnny is the best and fun as hell.

*does

by Anonymousreply 20May 5, 2023 1:25 PM

R15 has the right idea.

by Anonymousreply 21May 5, 2023 7:49 PM

I buzz my own hair because there's too little left to justify spending money on it.

by Anonymousreply 22May 5, 2023 7:54 PM

And give up that Berber bulge? Never!

by Anonymousreply 23May 5, 2023 7:56 PM

Just do it yourself every couple of weeks. Go with a low number like a 1 or zero so you do t have to try doing a fade. Get used to the look. Some find it attractive. If you have dark eyebrows it can be very nice. Hopefully you can grow a beard too.

by Anonymousreply 24May 5, 2023 8:40 PM

Hey, R15! That sounds just like a scene out of a movie I’ve seen many times. Well, at least until I got to the part where it said kids were running around!

R24, yeah, my eyebrows are dark brown (unlike the hair on top of my head, which is salt and pepper, I mean 97% salt now). I can easily grow a thick beard, but wouldn’t do that as summer’s approaching. Maybe in November. I do have a mustache, though. Hadn’t had one for years but sorta grew it when I took a week off from everything. One friend I’m attracted to likes it so I keep it.

I give myself a buzz cut with the same clippers that I use on the cat.

Should I have saved that for one of the Confessions threads?

by Anonymousreply 26May 5, 2023 11:24 PM

During covid we stopped using our long time barber and I cut my hair and my husbands with clippers and the guards, Still cutting our own hair and pretty pleased.

by Anonymousreply 27May 6, 2023 2:35 AM

Why not get a Suck Cut?
