Luke Skywalker Could Be Gay!

Mark Hamill Even Says So!

Is he, you know…?

Just in time for May the 4th, an old interview of Mark Hamill has resurfaced on social media where the Star Wars actor discussed the sexuality of his most legendary character, Luke Skywalker.

This interview, which took place in 2016, was originally reported by Vanity Fair. After being asked if Luke could be gay, Hamill explained:

“Fans are writing and ask all these questions, ‘I’m bullied in school… I’m afraid to come out.’ They say to me, ‘Could Luke be gay?’ I’d say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer… If you think Luke is gay, of course he is. You should not be ashamed of it. Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves.”

In the Star Wars universe, the Jedi take a vow to not get romantically or sexually attached to anyone. This is done for spiritual reasons, but also because their powers could be used for wrong reasons as a result of love and lust. In the prequel trilogy, we see exactly how that happens when Anakin Skywalker (who ultimately becomes Darth Vader) falls in love with Padmé Amidala and turns to the dark side when his loved one dies.

Many gay people who grew up obsessively watching the original Star Wars trilogy did project their own identities onto Luke and speculated whether he was also gay – including yours truly! With that said, for all intents and purposes, it is more logical to jump to the conclusion that Luke and all other Jedi identify as asexual in the LGBTQ+ spectrum. Though we never see Luke having a female romantic interest (other than briefly kissing his sister in a moment of panic), we also never see him have any romantic interest across his entire existence in the franchise.

Nonetheless, Hamill is here to tell you that art is subjective and open to one’s interpretation. If you want to believe that Luke is gay, then of course he is, and we stan Mark Hamill for that!

Of course Space Twink was gay. He did Leia’s hair, didn’t he?

Yoda was 'daddy' and Luke was 'son'.

Duh.

Doesn't 'Vivian Vance' mean the same thing as 'I don't care'.

by Anonymousreply 3May 4, 2023 9:40 PM

R3, I wondered that myself as I was making the poll, but decided to include both on the off chance that 'Vivian Vance' means something else to someone. ;)

Ugh! There's redundant text in the copy I pasted! Sorry about that, folks - I was concentrating on making the poll.

Don’t give Disney any ideas. They’ll change him to a trans man of color.

Yahoo algorithms are hitting me with all the gay Star Wars stuff.

OMG Adam Driver has no waist. None.

He's built like a potato.

by Anonymousreply 8May 4, 2023 9:59 PM

I'd do him.

by Anonymousreply 9May 4, 2023 11:53 PM

Gay is he.

My 12-year-old self was so in love with him in 1977. He was so beautiful back then. And I'll never forget how devastated I was when I read in the paper one Saturday afternoon that he'd gotten married. Thought I'd never get over that one.

Mark Hammill as himself always pinged for me.

May the forth he with you (said with a lisp).

Clearly Biggs was the love of this life. That's clear from the first movie (Episode IV).

by Anonymousreply 14May 5, 2023 6:17 AM

He couldn't master The Force until he was honest with himself. Yoda was an old queen who knew who Luke was.

by Anonymousreply 15May 5, 2023 6:52 AM

I agree with R12. I'm sure Hamill went the way of the casting couch... he was so cute and twinky in 1977. Make you wonder about ol' GL... and his tales of hiring Harrison, his carpenter...
