Gwyneth Paltrow’s Oscar Win Became ‘Unhealthy’ as People Turned Against Her for Sobbing Through Speech

Did people really turn on her for crying through the speech?

by Anonymousreply 76May 6, 2023 2:29 PM

GOOP has a lot to say lately. She must be bored.

by Anonymousreply 1May 4, 2023 2:59 PM

That's total BS. Nobody cared that she cried.

by Anonymousreply 2May 4, 2023 3:00 PM

Yeah, I don’t remember that happening at all. Goop is a fan of revisionist history.

by Anonymousreply 3May 4, 2023 3:04 PM

There were people who hated that she won but not because she cried, I feel most found her speech endearing. But many felt she shouldn’t have won period

by Anonymousreply 4May 4, 2023 3:08 PM

They turned on her because she was too flat chested for that stupid pink Princess dress. And her hair was all wrong too.

by Anonymousreply 5May 4, 2023 3:08 PM

I loved that pink dress and thought she looked divine.

by Anonymousreply 6May 4, 2023 3:09 PM

R5 came to say the same thing, most media said her dress was ill-advised. The sobbing was mocked but not meanly.

by Anonymousreply 7May 4, 2023 3:10 PM

Her win didn’t make any sense!

by Anonymousreply 8May 4, 2023 3:11 PM

R7 bull. Everyone loved her dress at the time.

by Anonymousreply 9May 4, 2023 3:11 PM

The media wasn't as mean about her as the rightful winner Fernanda

by Anonymousreply 10May 4, 2023 3:12 PM

R9 really? I've seen her on multiple lists of worst Oscar dresses, mainly because it squashed down her a-cups

by Anonymousreply 11May 4, 2023 3:13 PM

Most didn’t feel she should win either r10. That’s also revisionism.

by Anonymousreply 12May 4, 2023 3:14 PM

It wasn't the sobbing. If crying had shut her word puke down, people would have been celebrating the sobbing.

Unfortunately she kept talking through it. And when she opens her mouth to talk, no matter what else is going on, her personality comes through and THAT'S what's hard to take.

Now as then.

by Anonymousreply 13May 4, 2023 3:19 PM

She shouldn’t have won, and her crying was disgusting.

by Anonymousreply 14May 4, 2023 3:26 PM

Assuming the world is rooting for you is narcissism. Goop is emboldened by the good press she inexplicably got during the ski accident trial to see if the public is ready for a comeback. No, we're not. Shut up and go away.

by Anonymousreply 15May 4, 2023 3:30 PM

R6 = Blythe Danner

by Anonymousreply 16May 4, 2023 3:37 PM

Literally no one invests anything in what an Actor does at the Academy Awards unless they do something like slap someone.

by Anonymousreply 17May 4, 2023 3:39 PM

A lot of the crying on these awards shows is for show. It's borderline cringy. People act like it's the second coming of Christ when they get an award. Lame.

by Anonymousreply 18May 4, 2023 3:46 PM

THE ACADEMY AWARDS ARE LAME AND CRINGEY

THAT IS WHY PEOPLE WATCH THEM

GOODNIGHT

by Anonymousreply 19May 4, 2023 3:51 PM

She's someone who hasn't learned the concept of less is more.

by Anonymousreply 20May 4, 2023 3:54 PM

Her slicked back hair combined with crushed titties was a fashion fail, the crying helped distract though.

by Anonymousreply 21May 4, 2023 4:10 PM

[quote] R7] bull. Everyone loved her dress at the time.

There was a lot of criticism of the fit. Also, some people thought referencing Grace Kelly in the overall look was arrogant. Mostly, people were pissed because Cate’s performance was such a break out it deserved the win. I certainly felt that way. I felt bad that she cried though. Especially as it came out later that her family was dealing with her dad’s cancer diagnosis at the time.

The amount of backlash was pretty intense. Personally, I would rather have not won than deal with so many people openly saying I didn’t deserve it. Really taints the experience.

by Anonymousreply 22May 4, 2023 4:12 PM

That bitch wants people to feel sorry for her after winning the Oscar for the least worthy performance ?

by Anonymousreply 23May 4, 2023 4:15 PM

People turned against her because they came to discover she’s a pathological narcissist and a cunt. Realized that real quickly c. 1997.

Like most pathological narcissists, therapy only reaffirmed and reinforced her pathology. Even the most gifted analysts will concede there is little you can do for the personality type. Therapy may even be ill-advised b/c it can empower or morph the narcissist into a more virulent person, then under the belief that their behavior is the product of successful and measured introspection, and the opposite is true.

by Anonymousreply 24May 4, 2023 4:31 PM

When did the stealing of the script from Winona Ryder story come out? THAT'S when the shift happened.

by Anonymousreply 25May 4, 2023 4:57 PM

[quote] People turned against her because they came to discover she’s a pathological narcissist and a cunt.

Even I was turned off!

by Anonymousreply 26May 4, 2023 5:03 PM

No she wasn’t r26. Madonna and Goop are friends

by Anonymousreply 27May 4, 2023 5:04 PM

R27, they are not friends anymore. They had a big falling out due to a personal trainer

by Anonymousreply 28May 4, 2023 5:09 PM

She’s always so “put upon” by others as if her behavior doesn’t rankle. The bloom wasn’t even close to being off the rose when she won her Oscar, so her revisionism is going to get even more unbearable and we’re still technically in the Pitt era.

Funny thing is the more she laments over “ill” treatment from a quarter century ago, the more we remember the stories of her slurp-a-durping that dung heap for an Oscar. She must have fired all but the most loyal of her media team because she’s…yeesh.

We all know someone like her: they’ve been ridiculous from day one but it was ignored because it was seen as youthful exuberance. By the time they’re middle-aged, you have taken to screening their calls until they start showing up unannounced. A reality check won’t work because they can’t/won’t understood, no matter how plainly you put it or dumb it down to where a zygote would get the drift.

by Anonymousreply 29May 4, 2023 5:27 PM

Her performance was worthy. She sucked Weinstein’s cock to get that Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 30May 4, 2023 5:28 PM

Her dress was ill-fitting, but waify anorexic-looking white girls with flat chests and no curves were all the rage back then.

by Anonymousreply 31May 4, 2023 5:30 PM

Indeed R32. Gwynnie, Calista F, Jenny A…they had the same look. Unwashed and unfed.

by Anonymousreply 32May 4, 2023 5:36 PM

[quote]Everyone loved her dress at the time.

Bullshit! Nobody on alt showbiz gossip did and nobody else's opinion counts, really.

by Anonymousreply 33May 4, 2023 5:37 PM

Did Harvey help dry her tears?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 34May 4, 2023 5:39 PM

I followed the Oscar race particularly close the year Gwyneth run. People were pissed that she won instead of Fernanda Montenegro (Central Station), and they were highly critical of her Ralph Lauren prom dress, but crying during a speech was considered the least of her transgressions.

by Anonymousreply 35May 4, 2023 5:40 PM

I do remember laughing at her tears at my friend’s Oscar party, as well as laughing at her titties and also being offended “team Cate” fans. The whole party. About 20 of us.

by Anonymousreply 36May 4, 2023 6:34 PM

Who could forget Meryl's performance in "One True King" [sic]?

Does Variety use fact checkers anymore?

by Anonymousreply 37May 4, 2023 6:43 PM

The crying did seem planned and yes, fake. Men never cry when accepting Oscars. Halle Berry also cried and it seemed fake, as well.

Crying just seems like a form of groveling: thank you so much for letting me have this award! Theoretically, you "earned" the award or deserved. Just say thank you to your family, your agent, your director, lighting / makeup / wardrobe, and get off the stage.

Gwyneth's dress seemed heavy and like the thin straps were not enough to hold it up. It just dragged down the look of her chest area.

by Anonymousreply 38May 4, 2023 8:15 PM

The only thing I remember about her acceptance speech was that the next day in class my voice teacher was tut tutting about how 'untrained' Gwyneth's voice was because she was screeching from her throat. Gwyneth does have a pretty abysmal speaking voice, which is strange since her mother has one of the most beautiful speaking voices around.

by Anonymousreply 39May 4, 2023 9:10 PM

She suffers so much. Her life is just torture!

by Anonymousreply 40May 4, 2023 9:14 PM

Honestly, I thought she was fine in the film, but it was clear that her win was largely due to Harvey's expertise at working the Oscar system. In the history of the Weinstein Oscars, I found Roberto Begnigi's wins far more egregious than Paltrow's.

While Paltrow was giving her speech, wasn't there a quick audience shot of Judi Dench rolling her eyes?

Montenegro didn't have a chance in hell of winning. With rare exceptions (Sophia Loren) actors in foreign films didn't win...that is until Weinstein got into the act with Begnini and Dujardin, even though the latter was in a silent film (with Marion Cotillard in between for a non-Miramax film).

by Anonymousreply 41May 4, 2023 9:20 PM

R35 again, that’s a lie. The majority of people were not rooting for Fernanda. The way you lie over and over is insane to me. Enjoy the cancer you will develop.

by Anonymousreply 42May 4, 2023 9:24 PM

R41 she wasn’t gonna win and I don’t remember many rooting for her because most people never even watched her film.

by Anonymousreply 43May 4, 2023 9:25 PM

Didn’t Judi Dench win Supporting for this same film that year? Her win was controversial too because she was only on screen for a few short minutes.

by Anonymousreply 44May 4, 2023 10:41 PM

Judi won but it wasn’t controversial. Many predicted she was gonna get it.

by Anonymousreply 45May 4, 2023 10:43 PM

PS Cate was who everyone thought would win Best Actress.

by Anonymousreply 46May 4, 2023 10:44 PM

Whoopi Goldberg hosted the show that year, and came out dressed like Queen Elizabeth I, since both Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett were nominated for playing Elizabeth in different films.

As mentioned upthread, her attempt at a Grace Kelly look fell as flat as her chest. She was too skinny to pull it off, and the dress colour, her hair and the necklace didn't work well together, either. She just didn't look like an adult. The combination resulted in the appearance of a dorky, goody-two-shoes teenager or tween, and she went completely the other way when she attended the AAs the following year, so she must have been aware of the comments.

However, Butterick put out a pattern for those idiots who loved her dress.

by Anonymousreply 48May 4, 2023 11:57 PM

Her barbie princess dress was better than the saggy goth thing a year later.

by Anonymousreply 49May 5, 2023 12:07 AM

Here she is showing off her dirty pillows at The Oscars

I think it was Michael Musto who had this to say about the public's perception of Paltrow:

Gwyneth before the speech: Audrey Hepburn

Gwyneth after the speech: Sally Field

by Anonymousreply 52May 5, 2023 1:50 AM

The wrinkled, baggy neckline is godawful. It could have been so much better. Why wasn't it fitted instead of loose and saggy?

by Anonymousreply 53May 5, 2023 12:07 PM

From the necklace up I thought she looked great, but the dress needed fine tuning.

by Anonymousreply 54May 5, 2023 2:08 PM

She got her thin, wide mouth and unfortunate jawline from her father. Nowhere near as attractive as her mother. Where’d she get those massive gunboats that are her feet, though? They are almost as big as Paris Hilton’s.

by Anonymousreply 55May 5, 2023 3:32 PM

The pink dress isn’t tailored well. It looks like it should be lifted up higher (the straps are too long which is lowering the bodice). If it was lifted up, her tits might fill out the tailoring properly.

by Anonymousreply 56May 5, 2023 4:32 PM

She just looks like a geek/dork at r51. Not a star.

by Anonymousreply 57May 5, 2023 6:53 PM

My father was a voting member of the Academy. He despised Harvey Weinstein and his whole organization. He thought Paltrow’s Oscar was undeserved. He was especially critical of her blubbering acceptance speech, which he called “masturbatory.”

by Anonymousreply 58May 5, 2023 9:08 PM

Her speech wasn't total cringe. There have been worse.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 59May 5, 2023 10:09 PM

Her speech was awful, IMO. Yes, there may have been worse. Sally Field comes to mind.

by Anonymousreply 60May 5, 2023 10:17 PM

Nicole Kidman had a terrible acceptance speech too.

by Anonymousreply 61May 5, 2023 11:19 PM

Anne Hathaway’s got her a lot of backlash

by Anonymousreply 62May 5, 2023 11:30 PM

Gwyneth deserved her Oscar. Blanchett gave a standard British actress performance that often gets nominated because they sound good. It was Paltrow who gave the breakout performance. No one saw Central Station or cared about Fernanda. Streep gave a fine performance but wasn't going to win because she already had a couple. Emily Watson? See Fernanda Montenegro.

Her dress didn't fit well and she did blubber giving her speech. But people turned against her because, as noted above, the narcissism, GOOP, and Weinstein's campaigning for her Oscar.

None of that means she didn't deserve her Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 63May 5, 2023 11:47 PM

R28 Goop falls out with every woman because she’s a horrible cult. She literally fucks any man who comes within five feet of her and admitted that she’s a very nasty person in an interview once. She fucked Jay-Z (falling out w Beyoncé) and denies Harvey Weinstein, but come ON. She’s also fairly stupid and has a horrendous body. Goop’s hype is all from Goop herself.

And she looked like raw hell in that pink poofy thing. I still have nightmares about that goose neck and pancake titties combo.

by Anonymousreply 64May 5, 2023 11:50 PM

CUNT* not cult.

by Anonymousreply 65May 5, 2023 11:50 PM

The outfit she wore the following year was arguably worse - a huge achievement given the pink gown was hideous. But the next year, her hair and make-up sucked too. The year she won, that slicked back style she wore with the choker did her absolutely no favours. And the pink dress just made her look like Grace Kelly's anorexic love child. It was obvious that she was inspired by Grace, but someone close to her should have told her she couldn't pull it off. And she should have gone for a couture gown, fitted by experts.

by Anonymousreply 66May 6, 2023 12:56 AM

R44, Dench's award was a make-up one for not winning lead actress as Queen Victoria the year before in Mrs Brown.

R50, Blanchett is Australian, not British.

And I'd seen both Breaking the Waves and Central Station and knew Watson and Montenegro were each more deserving than Paltrow, who was obviously well-known and more marketable.

by Anonymousreply 67May 6, 2023 1:04 AM

More deserving, yes, but everyone knew they weren’t gonna win r67. Think of Paul Mescal and Bill Nighy this year. Most who saw their films would tell you they deserved the Oscar over who won, Brendan Fraser, but everyone knew they weren’t gonna. The nomination was the reward for them, especially because their films were tiny indie flicks.

by Anonymousreply 68May 6, 2023 1:06 AM

Ms. Montenegro and Ms. Watson were far superior to Ms. Cuntrow.

by Anonymousreply 69May 6, 2023 2:19 AM

The speech made M claw at her face.

by Anonymousreply 70May 6, 2023 3:27 AM

I loved Fernanda Montenegro's performance but there was no way she was winning. Nobody predicted she'd win. It was between Goop and Cate Blanchett.

by Anonymousreply 71May 6, 2023 3:59 AM

Watson wasn't nominated that year for Breaking the Waves, she was nominated for Hillary and Jackie. The Breaking the Waves nom was a year or two prior. She was terrific in both.

by Anonymousreply 72May 6, 2023 5:59 AM

I would have preferred Watson to win for Breaking The Waves or Brenda Blethyn for Secrets and Lies over Frances McDormand in 1996.

Frances should have won for "Almost Famous" in 2000.

by Anonymousreply 73May 6, 2023 6:45 AM

If Gyn hadn't won so quickly (and easily) in her career she might have challenged herself in more interesting roles

by Anonymousreply 74May 6, 2023 2:21 PM

R71 correct. A lot of revisionism on here with Fernanda. Most didn’t even think she would get nominated

by Anonymousreply 75May 6, 2023 2:23 PM

I agree most thought it was between the two but having watched all 5 performances Fernanda was the most (quietly and devastatingly) impressive.

I don't remember it but Edith Evans didn't really have a chance for The Whisperers in 1967 against big stars (Hepburn won) but she gave a masterclass performance as a lonely old women in impoverished England slowly losing her mind.
