Kyle MacLachlan

The son of a lawyer turned stockbroker, he originally studied to be an opera singer. Realizing he did not have, in his words "the instrument" for it, he quickly turned to acting, first in The Changeling alongside George C. Scott and later in David Lynch's space opera Dune, which was a major flop.

He finished college and was offered two roles of a life time in Lynch projects as Jeffrey in Blue Velvet and as Dale in Twin Peaks. He soon became a household name. The roles continued: The Doors, The Trial, The Flintstones, Showgirls, Sex and the City, Northfork, Desperate Housewives, How I Met Your Mother, Inside Out, High Flying Bord, and Portlandia. When not acting, he enjoys winemaking, sailing, golfing, traveling, reading, and dogs.

He is high brow, he is low brow. He is the American actor Kyle MacLachlan.

One of my favorite actors. I don't think anyone can say anything bad about him. He comes as a naturally intelligent and kind man.

by Anonymousreply 1May 3, 2023 11:49 PM

I had no idea he studied opera. I’m a big fan of his acting work.

by Anonymousreply 2May 3, 2023 11:50 PM

He always seems to take projects he finds interesting. No because he has to work. He is the male equivalent to Isabella Rossellini in that regard.

by Anonymousreply 12May 4, 2023 12:26 AM

He has been fortunate. He's snagged some intriguing, prolific gigs. He brings it to each role he takes, from The Doors, to Twin Peaks, even to bombs like Showgirls. He always shines and is a step above everyone else in what ever he does. I look forward to every new role he takes on.

by Anonymousreply 13May 4, 2023 12:32 AM

Wait a minute. How was he in The Changeling? Are you sure that's correct, OP? I've watched that film 100's of times. It's a favorite, and I don't remember seeing him in it. The Changeling is also not listed on KM's IMDB page. Explain that to me.

by Anonymousreply 31June 15, 2023 9:20 PM

I've worked with him before and he's a great guy. A lot of fine, diverse work. and a lengthy career. One of his more interesting early films is The Hidden, a pulpy sci-fi B picture that's fantastic. Stylish and outrageous. The director, Jack Shoulder, discusses Kyle's appeal on the commentary for the disc. "I was worried about my decision to cast him because he's not a real strong looking guy. I set up the shot and he stood there, and I thought *ehh*. I looked through the camera and he looked much, much better. It was almost shocking. I took my eye off the camera and looked at him again, and looked through the lens and he looked different, he looked better, he looked stronger. It seemed to focus his looks. I've had that experience with other actors, that's why people are movie stars. It is absolutely true that when you look at them through the lens, they get bigger, they get better."

Check it out, it's a blast.

Even if he couldn't make it as an opera singer, he must have been able to sing well enough to think studying it might work out. I've never heard him sing, but he must be comparatively good, even if not opera singer caliber.

Or, is that a faulty assumption.

by Anonymousreply 33June 15, 2023 11:06 PM

by Anonymousreply 37June 16, 2023 12:06 AM

by Anonymousreply 38June 16, 2023 1:38 AM

The Hidden is a great movie. It really holds up.

I watched Blue Velvet again recently and Kyle was a big reason why the film works so well. He really taps into the dark impulses of his character. It's a difficult performance to pull off.

Plus, he's hot as fuck in the movie. Beautiful ass.

by Anonymousreply 39June 16, 2023 1:43 AM

Always beautiful and sexy, I enjoy his many acting roles and unique characterizations, he still has a really nice face and demeanor, sincere, honest and authentic. I think he still looks good. :-)

by Anonymousreply 40June 16, 2023 2:40 AM

I don't know if I'd classify him as low brow, but he is very much a small-town boy. Yakima is a sleepy little city mainly known for its apple orchards. I have been there a number of times, and there isn't much happening. As someone who was also raised in the Pacific NW (albeit in a big city), I have always kind of rooted for him—we don't have a wealth of talent that comes out of here, really. Kyle is a northwest treasure. The fact that he's both a good actor and good-looking gets him bonus points.

by Anonymousreply 41June 16, 2023 3:18 AM

He IS the Kwisatz Haderach.

by Anonymousreply 42June 16, 2023 4:02 AM

He used to be a big serial modelizer back in his handsome younger days. I have no idea if he ever married one.

by Anonymousreply 43June 16, 2023 4:08 AM

Nevertheless his instrument is quite lovely.

by Anonymousreply 44June 16, 2023 4:09 AM

He lives in my building in Chelsea (as does Fran Lebowitz) and I see him all the time with his kids. He always says hi and seems very gracious. And he's still very handsome.

by Anonymousreply 45June 16, 2023 4:12 AM

R41 Low brow as in the roles he takes: The Flintstones, Showgirls, etc.

by Anonymousreply 46June 16, 2023 6:02 PM

For Twin Peaks fans, it was pretty insulting seeing him turned into a eunuch on Sex and the City. Then again, Michael Patrick King seems to get off on emasculating men in his writing, while glorifying women who think they're men.

by Anonymousreply 47June 16, 2023 6:19 PM

R47 what do you expect from a gay man?

by Anonymousreply 48June 16, 2023 6:21 PM

R46 Both The Flintstones (a huge budget of $45 million, coproduced by TWO film studios AND Steven Spielberg, the return of Elizabeth Taylor to the big screen, and made $345 million worldwide) and Showgirls (another $45 million budget and the highly anticipated follow up to Paul Verhoven's smash hit Basic Instinct) were both high profile productions at the time. The fact that they both turned out to be terrible is the fault of the directors and studios. Being signed to major productions is a good sign, most of the time.

by Anonymousreply 50June 16, 2023 6:24 PM

Actors are always just taking the least embarrassing work they can find. Unless you're Daniel Day Lewis, you are doing the best work you can find that pays and sometimes that's the fucking Flintstones.

by Anonymousreply 56June 18, 2023 12:55 AM

Very good looking, somewhat wooden actor. Evidence of his cleverness is that he made it work for him. Also, he knew how to show the best part of him, his spectacular ass (as shown by r49). Again, clever.

by Anonymousreply 57June 18, 2023 12:59 AM

He can’t get hard.

by Anonymousreply 58June 18, 2023 1:04 AM

by Anonymousreply 59June 18, 2023 4:23 AM

R59, he mostly plays the same version of this shy, introverted, somehow repressed character (Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, Sex and the City, etc), not very versatile.

Not exaggerating, early 90's New York. Friend and I going to Barneys downtown and NY is having a heat wave in the dog days of summer. Waiting at the light, I'm standing next to Linda Evangelista, and Kyle. Evangelista beautiful of course, looked like a drowned rat, as we did, wet hair, sweating and generally hating the humidity and heat. And there stands Kyle looking handsome and cool as a cucumber. When we got into the needed Barney's air conditioning my friend and i laughed at how he could look so good while we were all miserable.

by Anonymousreply 64June 18, 2023 9:36 AM

Never heard a whiff of anything that Kyle MacLachlan is anything other than straight.

He's played a gay dad and father of a gay son as acting roles, but that's far as things go.

Kyle MacLachlan is however aware many of films he's been in and or he himself has a strong LGBT following and thinks it's "great".

Since about late 1980's and certainly 1990's Chelsea from say 27th street south down into West Village and beyond (Tribeca, SoHo) has become happy celebrity sighting grounds.

Walking around down there and or say going into shops you never know who you're going to see.

Have lost count of how many famous actors have seen in Whole Foods on Union Square.

Robert Culp (yes he had all his teeth and then some, fantastic smile).

Kristen Johnston - Tall, tall girl; could hunt geese with a rake.

by Anonymousreply 72June 19, 2023 12:57 PM

r69, yes, I live in the Chelsea Mercantile and also used to see Nick Jonas there and at the Whole Foods in our building. Not sure he's still there, that was about 7 years ago. Bobby Flay also lived there with that actress Stephanie Something but not any more. And my husband has seen both Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz walking through the lobby but I don't think there there any more, possibly just a sublet working on a film in NY. I think Katie Holmes, who had just moved in before we did, about 10 years ago, is also not living there any more. But we see Kyle and Fran Lebowitz all the time. She looks ancient in person.

by Anonymousreply 92June 19, 2023 11:32 PM

I don't think he is wooden. He was excellent in Twin Peaks: The Return. He should have been nominated for The Return. He had to play something like five characters. He was very menacing as Cooper's evil doppleganger.

by Anonymousreply 93June 20, 2023 1:37 AM

He's alright, but looked plastic decades ago, and his perfornances are usually not convincing. Not even in "Dune", really, and that's one of his better parts. I find myself questioning the validity of his career as an actor. Not quite on a Kevin Kline level, but I question it. His ass did look good in "Showgirls", though. So, points for that.
