This was a total non-story that press is trying to make newsworthy.
Vaughn asked questions Trump didn't want to answer while on Trump's private plane. Vaughn kept pushing, frustrating Trump. Finally Trump told his men to get Vaughn off his plane (before taking off, I assume). Trump grabbed Vaughn's two phones and 'tossed them aside'.
And ?
Where's the newsworthy story ?

I have a college friend who Vaughn interned for in college and she's kept up with him for years on Facebook and I still see his comments on her posts. And it makes me feel old because he went from being her intern (whom she adored) to a CNN reporter.
And I had no idea he was gay until he got engaged last year.

Regardless of whose plane he was on, R3, Trump is an ex-President of the United States (and hopefully he'll remain that way) and should act with some class and dignity, and not like some Mafia thug wannabe and petulant, spoiled child.
That you think Trump can get by with this bullshit and in doing so, normalize psychotic behavior simply because of "my house, my rules" explains why this country is in such a fucking mess today.
And if Trump isn't bad enough, Rhonda Sanctimonious is waiting in the wings to give us a taste of her Heinrich Himmler impersonation.

R6 All I said is "Where's the newsworthy story ?" There is none because this incident happens ALL the time.
I have a friend who is a freelance journalist, and for the past 20+ years, he has interviewed a range of celebrities (and politicians) for different media outlets. What was described above is COMMON behavior for many notables. The only difference between the Trump situation with Vaughn and the celebrity interviews my friend has done is that celebrities have their publicist or agent acting as their 'handler' sitting in the interview with them, and telling my journalist friend certain questions he is asking is 'totally inappropriate' ( a range of topics). The celeb will sit there and not answer the question, until he moves on to the next question. He knows what trouble he will get into if he dares to push it: the handler then calls security over and asks them to escort him from the premises (restaurant, hotel room, plane). When this happens (and it often does, as he hates to give up on a good interview), security will then demand he erase the interview in front of them from any device he has has, and take any handwritten notes away from him. It's happened plenty of times to him as well as fellow-journalists he is friends with. And it happens with politicians, too, especially when they are on the campaign trail.
The only difference here is Trump didn't have a 'handler' doing the dirty work for him, he did it himself.
I am no fan of Trump at all, but truly - this is a non-story being pushed to make it sound newsworthy.

"Don't ask me any more questions" is what Trump said to Hillyard.
So that means Hillyard had asked previous questions, since Trump indicates he didn't want 'more questions'.
So as R12 has said, 'the story would have been what the questions were'. What were the questions already asked, which frustrated Trump ? No one is saying.

1. Vaughn is not 'a private citizen'. He is a celebrity journalist, seen on MSNBC regularly.
2. Did Vaugh file assault charges with the local law enforcement against Trump for this 'assault' ? Was Trump arrested by local authorities for this assault ? If not, it was not on public record, so the local and national media would not know about it since there is no record of it. Unlike MG, who filed assault charges and had the woman arrested - so yes, there is now a public record of the incident.
[quote]Both should be examined for ethicality and criminality and should face appropriate consequences...but will that happen?
You are right. Yet the only way that will happen is if Vaughn decided to file assault charges against Trump with local law enforcement. For whatever reasons, he chose not to do so (probably because he didn't feel it was any type of criminal assault). Only Vaughn can step up and disclose why he didn't have Trump arrested.

Since he was there on behalf of NBC, it probably wasn't his call as to whether to file charges, but his bosses'. Most likely no one could have made an immediate response, because Trump likely flew off right after doing it.

[quote]Since he was there on behalf of NBC, it probably wasn't his call as to whether to file charges, but his bosses'. Most likely no one could have made an immediate response, because Trump likely flew off right after doing it.
As an adult American citizen, Vaughn had every right to file charges if he was assaulted by another person. Why would he need permission from his employer ? If he was working at 7-11, and someone assaulted him (customer, coworker) would he need 7-11 to permit him to file assault charges with the local police ? Of course not.
The question should be: Why didn't he file assault charges with the local police ? Since he didn't file anything with the police, it's a safe bet to say he was not assaulted. Immediate response or delayed response - either would do, and Trump would be arrested for assault. It's as simple as that.

R23 Like celebrities, Presidential and other political candidates also have handlers and campaign managers who sit in on an interview, and will steer the interview, and interrupt a line of questioning if they know it won't be a good soundbite for the candidate's campaign. So the short answer is - no, they don't have to answer every question put forth to them.
Nicolle Wallace was one of the handlers assigned to VP candidate Sarah Palin - who didn't want her help (as we all know), thinking she knew best for herself and Palin did the opposite of what Wallace suggested in interviews and who to be interviewed by. Wallace strongly suggested Palin not sit down with Katie Couric for the infamous disaster of an interview, knowing Palin was no match for Couric - but Palin didn't listen and made an ass out of herself. Palin still blamed Wallace for the interview, and I'm pretty certain she fired her shortly afterwards.

Or, perhaps he chose not to file a complaint or charges because he's going to be assigned to follow Trump throughout the campaign and filing charges would guarantee that Trump wouldn't take his questions.
Katy Tur had that job in 2016, and parlayed it into her own show. And Trump was mercilessly cruel to her. I'm thinking Vaughn is just gonna suck it up (the abuse) because it's a high profile gig.
