Read 'em and weep:

Was Lea nominated?

by Anonymousreply 1May 2, 2023 2:17 PM

Nope

by Anonymousreply 2May 2, 2023 2:18 PM

I’m hoping these following shows and people lose:

- Kimberley Akimbo

- Jessica Chastain

- Leopoldstadt

- Ben Platt

by Anonymousreply 3May 2, 2023 2:20 PM

[quote]Nope

Oh, there's going to be some wig shitting!

by Anonymousreply 4May 2, 2023 2:20 PM

I hope Josh Groban wins, he has a great voice and BDF

by Anonymousreply 5May 2, 2023 2:25 PM

[quote]Was Lea nominated?

Lea was not eligible for a Tony.

by Anonymousreply 6May 2, 2023 2:58 PM

All of these shows are trash compared to " Follies."

by Anonymousreply 7May 2, 2023 3:06 PM

Poor Laura Linney!

How embarrassing for her.

by Anonymousreply 8May 2, 2023 3:09 PM

Did Lea Michele punch the air with GLEE when she read out Alex Newell's name in the best supporting actor category, thus committing a hate crime as Alex Newell doesn't identify as a man.

by Anonymousreply 9May 2, 2023 3:12 PM

SLIH appears to be the show to beat, though I wouldn't count out Kimberly Akimbo in the best musical category.

by Anonymousreply 10May 2, 2023 3:15 PM

[quote]she read out Alex Newell's name in the best supporting actor category

Oh, dear.

This isn't the Oscars, honey.

by Anonymousreply 11May 2, 2023 3:16 PM

What was Linney in?

by Anonymousreply 12May 2, 2023 3:16 PM

As predicted, A majority of BIPOC acting noms, yet they snub John David Washington. Fuckbrains.

by Anonymousreply 13May 2, 2023 3:31 PM

There was talk late last year about giving Leah a 'special Tony' for her work in 'Funny Girl' and literally saving the production from closing in the red last summer. I'm not certain what happened with that idea, but in my opinion, they should've done something for her. She did indeed save the show.

by Anonymousreply 14May 2, 2023 3:36 PM

She adds lushtre to the Broadway season!

by Anonymousreply 15May 2, 2023 3:41 PM

[...]

by Anonymousreply 16May 2, 2023 3:41 PM

Too many actors nominated who didn't deserve to be there. Yeah, I'm looking at you, Borle. And Colton. And Audra. And Ruthie. And NaTasha. And Sam Jackson instead of Potts.

by Anonymousreply 17May 2, 2023 3:44 PM

Observations:

J. Harrison Ghee is a 'they'. He is neither 'he' nor 'she'. How does he get a nom for 'Best Actor in a musical' when he doesn't qualify as a male ?

SLIH and NY, NY has averaged mediocre reviews at best, and really bad word of mouth. Many didn't think SLIH would last past the holiday season - and it almost didn't without the emergency financing they pulled together to keep the doors open. They get nods for 'Best Musical' ?

I predict KA will sweep the Tonys - incredible reviews, excellent word of mouth, so-so box office.

OHIO STATE MURDERS was a huge flop - but let's nominate Audra anyhow. She's the Angela Bassett of Broadway.

by Anonymousreply 18May 2, 2023 3:51 PM

KA's grosses are so bad. If it wasn't a Tony frontrunner, it would've closed by now. I think KA will go on to have a Strange Loop type run - it will likely win the Tony and close by the end of the year.

by Anonymousreply 19May 2, 2023 3:59 PM

Boring boring BORING.

by Anonymousreply 20May 2, 2023 4:03 PM

KA scheduled to close first week in August according to the Atlantic Theatre Company website.

by Anonymousreply 21May 2, 2023 4:03 PM

Nobody likes SLIH, but its like MEMPHIS.......theres just about nothing else.

by Anonymousreply 22May 2, 2023 4:08 PM

R21 If it sweeps the Tonys, it will stay open longer. It's the most "positively" talked about musical this season. Can't say that for any others this year (original musicals, not revivals).

by Anonymousreply 23May 2, 2023 4:12 PM

No matter how many Tonys, how do you sell a musical about a child who is dying from an incurable disease?

At least Fun Home had fun in the title.

by Anonymousreply 24May 2, 2023 4:38 PM

I'm really disappointed Dancin' didn't get any noms. It's probably going to close the show, which is a shame. It's a terrific production, and dance focused shows on Broadway need to be supported if people want to keep seeing dance focused shows on Broadway. If they don't, this was a smart move.

by Anonymousreply 25May 2, 2023 4:45 PM

There are no dancers in Dancing' deserving of a nomination. They deserve more work, but an award? No way.

by Anonymousreply 26May 2, 2023 5:17 PM

[quote] J. Harrison Ghee is a 'they'. He is neither 'he' nor 'she'. How does he get a nom for 'Best Actor in a musical' when he doesn't qualify as a male ?

Umm, you know that little XY chromosome he has? That qualifies him, dear.

by Anonymousreply 27May 2, 2023 5:20 PM

R27 He disagrees, dear. His self-declared gender identity is not dependent on his XY chromosone. Those days are so last century.

by Anonymousreply 28May 2, 2023 5:23 PM

Good for him. He can live in that little fantasy world all he likes, but if he wants to play with the rest of us, he needs to face reality.

And so do you.

by Anonymousreply 29May 2, 2023 5:25 PM

Reality is constantly evolving - times change, and you need to change with the times and evolve. Don't be locked up in your safe room. That's "If" you wish to play with the rest of us.

by Anonymousreply 30May 2, 2023 5:29 PM

Isn't Alex Newell a woman?

by Anonymousreply 31May 2, 2023 5:30 PM

J. Harrison Ghee and Alex Newell both appear to be perfectly content in the male acting categories (which is the category Newell submitted themselves for according to the attached article), so there shouldn't be any controversy surrounding their nominations (at least not from either of them).

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 32May 2, 2023 5:31 PM

Yeah, “I’m nonbinary until saying otherwise might get me an award.”

by Anonymousreply 33May 2, 2023 5:34 PM

This whole gender argument is nonsense. We don’t need gender neutral categories. White Men will almost always win over anyone else which will lead to more drama. We don’t need men in women categories and vice versa. Enough.

by Anonymousreply 34May 2, 2023 5:35 PM

They submitted themselves in the male categories. They know deep down that’s where they belong.

That Yellowjackets actress making headlines right now for not submitting herself for an Emmy because they have gendered categories is an idiot.

by Anonymousreply 35May 2, 2023 5:36 PM

[quote] Reality is constantly evolving

No, it really actually isn't. Fantasy and delusion, that constantly devolves, but reality pretty much stays the same if it's fact and science based. Ghee was born a man, he's done absolutely nada to change anything about that, therefore, guess what?

If he said he was a donut, would you expect the Tony Awards to create a Best Performance by a Baked Goods category?

Well, you probably would, but the rest of us know how silly that is. Just like we know how silly the "concept" of non-binary is.

by Anonymousreply 36May 2, 2023 5:37 PM

The argument of gender shouldn’t even be an argument, especially when the same people who say a man can be a woman or vice versa will say a black person cant be white and vice versa. If you say a man is a woman just because they claim so you can’t say a white person isn’t black when they say so.

by Anonymousreply 37May 2, 2023 5:40 PM

Things must be awkward at Chez Swenson today, with Audra being nominated and Will snubbed.

by Anonymousreply 38May 2, 2023 6:16 PM

Will is in a financial hit and Audra's play closed early. Now they're even.

by Anonymousreply 39May 2, 2023 6:20 PM

[quote] They submitted themselves in the male categories. They know deep down that’s where they belong.

And this is how you know these guys (Ghee and Newell) are not really "committed" to this whole bullshit fad. Sure, they'll scream "I'M NON-BINARY" to get attention and make sure every bleeding heart gives them special consideration to make themselves feel better, but they also want AWARDS and will do anything they can to get them, even deny their own causes.

by Anonymousreply 40May 2, 2023 8:05 PM

Will the WGA strike have any effect on the Tonys?

by Anonymousreply 41May 2, 2023 8:59 PM

What? Another nomination for MOI? Quelle surprise!

It's just for the best of the season, not some formalized ideal "best." It was a mediocre year with mediocre shows.

R41. I hope not. Otherwise Ariana will have to write her own rap when she hosts the show.

by Anonymousreply 46May 2, 2023 10:17 PM

R44, Will even 13 Tony nominations be enough to increase SLIH ticket sales?

How long can a big budget musical survive at 70% capacity?

by Anonymousreply 47May 2, 2023 11:53 PM

R47 many have survived on that. Or less.

However, they don’t nominate based on sales. This is where people go wrong.

by Anonymousreply 48May 2, 2023 11:59 PM

Jessica Hecht was nominated for “Summer, 1976” — a two-hander with Laura Linney the only other performer onstage.

by Anonymousreply 49May 2, 2023 11:59 PM

Bad Cinderella you’re next.

R41 Yes, the writers strike will indeed affect the Tonys. They've been talking about this the past few months - would the Tonys be delayed AGAIN or will the show try to go on without writers (and how many actors and actresses would cross the picket lines to attend) ?

by Anonymousreply 51May 3, 2023 1:52 AM

Some Paul Mescal fans are upset he didn’t get a Tony nomination. I had to explain to them he wasn’t even eligible because it’s a West End production 😭😂

by Anonymousreply 52May 3, 2023 1:53 AM

Camelot: I'm shocked Andrew Burnap didn't get one. He was so good being awkward and idealistic as King Arthur trying to promote a more democratic kingdom. Seemed to handle the new Sorkin script well too. I've seen some forgettable local versions of Arthur so it really stood out to me.

SLIH: I'm really glad Ghee got recognized, a great standout in the show.

NYNY: Oh boy. One of the biggest disappointments of the year in terms of music, plot, etc. I'm amazed it got much of anything.

by Anonymousreply 53May 3, 2023 2:06 AM

[quote]NYNY: Oh boy. One of the biggest disappointments of the year in terms of music, plot, etc. I'm amazed it got much of anything.

When everything else is shit...well, they had to fill out the categories.

by Anonymousreply 54May 3, 2023 2:32 AM

NYNY will definitely win for lighting, and maybe for set. Other than that...

by Anonymousreply 55May 3, 2023 3:25 AM

So SHOCKED 1776 and its star Sara Porkalob were shut out!

by Anonymousreply 56May 3, 2023 3:30 AM

by Anonymousreply 60May 3, 2023 10:35 AM

Has anyone seen SUGAR currently playing off broadway.

by Anonymousreply 61May 3, 2023 1:26 PM

I get the Ben Platt hate, but you have to admit he was excellent in Evan Hansen.

It's strange how bad he looked in the 2021 movie. It must have filmed in 2020, but he looked more than passable when he sang at the 2016 Tony's.

Frankly, they should have gotten cute twink Sam Tutty to do the movie.

Platt at 2016 Tony's and Tutty at the Olivier Awards which he won - Platt at the beginning and Tutty at 11:50. I can't decide which I like better.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 62May 3, 2023 2:22 PM

Is Tutty fruity?

by Anonymousreply 63May 3, 2023 2:23 PM

God, I forgot how bad that "Dear Evan Hansen" song is—and, inexplicably, it has become a standard.

by Anonymousreply 64May 3, 2023 2:27 PM

[quote]Is Tutty fruity?

I haven't seen one way or another, but the purses fly when he speaks.

The weirdest thing about Evan Hansen is the number of Evans who are dating. Ben Platt is engaged to his successor on Broadway, Noah Galvin. Also, Ben Levi Ross from the touring company was dating the then Broadway version, Taylor Trensch. Also, I read somewhere that two of these Evans dated, but couldn't say for sure which other than one wasn't Tutty although Stephen Christopher Anthony (the third one to sing) appears to be engaged to someone named Cameron Hobbs, now.

[quote]God, I forgot how bad that "Dear Evan Hansen" song is—and, inexplicably, it has become a standard.

Really? It's not all that bad.

by Anonymousreply 66May 3, 2023 2:39 PM

I think repeating "When you're falling in a forest and there's nobody around / Do you ever really crash or even make a sound?" a dozen times and calling it a bridge is bad MT writing, but I'm obviously in the minority on this one.

by Anonymousreply 67May 3, 2023 2:42 PM

I've never seen "Dear Evan Hansen" but remember being surprised to hear that the character is straight, not gay.

by Anonymousreply 68May 3, 2023 2:48 PM

If you want to see a lot of drama and mud-slinging, go over to the Broadway.com message board where they take these nominations very seriously. God forbid someone says 'so and so' didn't deserve a nomination...at least half the board gets 'offended' and attacks the poster, rather than try to have an intelligent conversation and share opinions. And don't dare say this was a 'crappy season' - you're automatically a 'hater'.

by Anonymousreply 69May 3, 2023 3:15 PM

I think that was because of the similarly titled movie Love, Simon which was about a gay character. Plus, Ben Platt is gay.

by Anonymousreply 85May 4, 2023 3:50 PM

I understand that, I was responding to this

[quote] so will voters not vote for NYNY and figure Kander's already getting one?

Which made it sound like they were saying- The voters won't vote for Kander for NYNY because he's already getting one (the LA) and I said he already has a Tony (competitive) and he's not specifically nominated this year for a competitive one, so them voting or not voting for NYNY has nothing to do with Kander getting a Lifetime Achievement.

by Anonymousreply 86May 4, 2023 4:12 PM

I think Kander's Lifetime Tony could definitely cost NY, NY some votes in a few categories, where voters might feel he and the show are being justly rewarded enough that night.

Not logical, I know, but it's the Tonys and it's all about impetuosity inn the moment.

by Anonymousreply 87May 4, 2023 4:37 PM

R87, I would say the overall lack of quality of NYNY is its biggest impediment to getting any votes. ; )

by Anonymousreply 88May 4, 2023 4:38 PM

For years, Broadway ( musicals especially) have been plagued by a total lack of imagination. Some of it is that producers just want to have safe investments; some because all of the lucrative jobs are in Hollywood. So, we got a series of revivals and juke box musicals. When that started to run its course, producers struggled to come up with anything new. Hello, re-casting women or trans in traditional men's parts or black actors in traditionally white parts! Just label it " re-imagined for a contemporary audience" and put it out there. It's no longer daring, but status quo. With few exceptions, people don't care for it very much. Thud go the revenues. What's next?
