I think him making it seem like he chose to leave is bullshit and they actually canceled the show and dropped him.
CBS was losing $20+ million a year producing “The Late Late Show with James Corden”

8 years is a long time. Corden certainly made a silk purse of a sow's ear. Considering how annoying he is, he was spectacularly successful.

I loved Colbert's old satire show - hope he's bringing back something very similar to his old one. And... I'm especially looking forward to this, if it happens:
"Sony Pictures is looking to bring Craig Ferguson back to late-night TV as soon as Fall 2023. The production house is shopping a new half-hour format starring the former host of The Late Late Show. He’ll unpack the week in TV with friends."

Yes, it was LUSH, R10.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | May 1, 2023 6:05 PM |
Glad to hear Ferguson is coming back to Late Night. I was surprised that Colbert took Letterman's spot instead of Craig, though I guess he had a lot of momentum at the time with his show on Comedy Central. Still, I would have thought someone would have picked up Ferguson who, to my mind, was a superior host to pretty much any of the guys on now, save (maybe) Kimmel.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 1, 2023 7:16 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 20 | May 1, 2023 7:26 PM |
R11, he's a known asshole. Not predatory like Ellen, just snide and dismissive of staff and of fans. There is a Reddit AMA post of him that is just brutal for all the people who call him out. It seems to be pretty common knowledge in the industry. My favorite tale of him was when Jimmy Kimmel, obviously well aware of his tendencies, asked him to name one of his cameramen. He couldn't do it, of course.

Not even a specific cameraman — ANY cameraman in the room. Corden tried to laugh it off but he was rattled.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 1, 2023 8:13 PM |
Cordon does have talent - he was pretty amazing in ONE MAN, TWO GUVNORS on stage, though you don't want to watch the video version as his performance was best seen from the distance you get in a theater.
But he does seem like the stereotype of the unpleasant comic. I'm sure he was a jerk well before he came to the U.S.

R23 He was. Fighting with Patrick Stewart on stage.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 1, 2023 8:52 PM |
He's not interesting, charming, or funny.
How is he a star? I've seen him "acting" if you want to call it that in a few things - he was terrible.
Why he was paid so much money to be mediocre and an asshat to boot is an example of what's wrong with Hollywood.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | May 1, 2023 8:56 PM |
I saw him in One Man, Two Guvnors and thought he was wonderful. I was hired to work on a revival of A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum he was to star in, directed by Alex Timbers. This was cancelled when he got the talk show. I was disappointed at the time, but I've come to see that I dodged a bullet.

The lead up to the last show was a bloody over the top hype-a-palooza. Was a three hour prime time “special” really necessary? Good riddance to the biggest asshole on late night tv. I know Letterman once wore that crown but Letterman was actually funny. And innovative. The best bit, which was the Truth or Dare challenge with the vomit inducing food options, was stolen from Jimmy Fallon. Don’t let the door hit your tubby bum on the way out, Blanche.

by Anonymous | reply 42 | May 1, 2023 10:26 PM |
When Craig Ferguson hosted the show, he complained regularly about the low budget CBS provided them. They had no band and used library music to play guests and commercials on and off. Their studio was the smallest in Television City and was in horrible shape. It was built as a rehearsal space and was never meant to be used for broadcast. They always had technical problems; one time they did half the show in the dark because the lights shorted out. It wasn't until 2-3 years before Craig left that they gave them a little money to improve the stage and equipment.
I was really surprised when Corden took over because it was like CBS realized they had a show at 12:30 all of a sudden. He got tons of promotion where Craig barely got any. He had a band led by Reggie Watts. If Craig ever got a joke on the Eye Opener with Gayle & Them, Gayle would always roll her eyes and say something along the lines of, "That Craig sure is [italic]different"[/italic] But when Corden was on she would gush, "Oh, James Cordon is so amazing! What a treasure." Meanwhile, Craig's show was original and brilliant while Corden's was a Graham Norton wannabe and had the most irritating regular features imaginable. Carpool Karaoke is the most narcissistic, self-aggrandizing thing I've ever seen on television. And only a tool like Cordon would think it was entertaining to block weekday traffic in Los Angeles to do a musical number.
So long, Corden. Enjoy your well-deserved new reputation as a money loser.

Maybe they're embarrassed that they made such a stupid mistake hiring and then keeping him as long as they did. Makes CBS looks stupid.
Surely he didn't have the ammo to demand the send off in his negotiations - like they owed him a lot of severence and he was willing to have this shit instead?
by Anonymous | reply 44 | May 1, 2023 10:27 PM |
R43 wasn't all the mistreatment Dave Letterman's fault?
Craig had some kind of show and one of his first guests was Jay Leno. I always thought that was the middle finger to Dave.
Anyway, maybe Dave didn't own Corden's show like he owned Ferguson's?

The original LA Magazine article that the OP's Insider story quotes is actually a quite interesting look at the state of latenight broadcast TV in 2023.
According to the author's sources, CBS definitely won't be rebooting The Late Late Show with a new host, but instead producing smaller budgeted late night TV.

Bring back Craig Ferguson!
by Anonymous | reply 58 | May 2, 2023 4:16 AM |
R57, it's going to happen to all TV; Bob Hearts Abishola is only keeping actors who play Bob and Abishola on contract.
Soaps are being shot on a shoe string; everything that happens on Y&R happens in a coffee shop.
Eventually, viewers will drop off b/c there's nothing to watch. The TV business model will implode upon itself.
I canceled all my streaming platforms and I kept Directv streaming; that gives me plenty to watch; I did keep Amazon and I have free apps like Tubi. When White Lotus 3 comes along, I'll sign up for HBO Max or I guess just Max and binge it and then cancel it.
The dream used to be land a sitcom, ride it out for 5 or 7 years and live off residuals. Actors don't have that now.
And forget if a black woman or another minority will take Corden's spot. Now, no one will. The shows are too costly.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | May 2, 2023 4:57 AM |
How he wasn’t cancelled after his offensive gayface performance in ‘The Prom’ was a complete mystery to me. He played it like the gay equivalent of a minstrel character.

by Anonymous | reply 62 | May 2, 2023 3:23 PM |
R59, they say the actors on Bob Hearts Abishola had been waiting for this season to negotiate richer long-term deals. Which is typical of shows on that long. That new contract is where they make out.
And now they will get five eps at the old price. I feel for them. TV acting is nowhere near as lucrative as most think (because we hear of the outliers’ salaries… the Friends, BBT and Modern family casts, for example).
When you land a show that sticks, it’s a rare chance to build a decent nest egg to carry you through the fallow years.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | May 2, 2023 6:58 PM |
TV used to be lucrative. But less people are watching it which is why things are harder (again).
by Anonymous | reply 64 | May 2, 2023 7:03 PM |
Corden's performance in The Prom was a model of subtlety next to Brooks Ashmankas' in the Broadway show, even given the difference between stage and screen acting.

by Anonymous | reply 70 | May 3, 2023 5:29 AM |
Besides being an asshole, his main problem is that he's a *liar*. And likely badly advised by his team. Letterman's early ratings were never hurt by the occasional caustic comment or dressing down of a moronic guest. You don't actually have to be nice. But you DO need at least a measure of authenticity. Once viewers catch a whiff of bullshit and realize you aren't even *close* to who you're pretending to be (see ELLEN).....it's over. It's hard to recover from that kind of deceit. Corden did a major overhauling of his 'persona' before coming to the States and settled on the fakest, most obsequious, fawning act ever. He had his head so far up guests asses it was like watching a fucking pig root for truffles. No one is surprised this didn't work out. He had some juice early on because there was some novelty appeal but he's been limping by for years now. Enjoy the glue factory James.

[quote]BS isn't only saving money here. All but the title role stars on "Bob Hearts Abishola," have been lowered to Recurring . CBS claims this will allow 20-plus cast members to find other work, while still being with the show.
This is bizarre, as the two main characters are terrible, they're not interesting in the least, they are both one note and tedious.
The real laughs come from the entire supporting cast, especially the two Black women who work at the hospital (the African-American nurse and the African woman who distributes the food), the two African men who now co-manage the lead male character's sock factory, the African aunt and uncle (the African-American actor is an American doing an African accent) are also hilarious as is the white actor who played Christy's ex-husband on “Mom” as well as the great Christine Ebersole as Bob’s mother.
The druggie/drunk sister is also good. Abishola’s mom is way too annoying to find funny. Abishola’s son is simply ’there’.
The two main characters are the least interesting characters on this series, they’re awful, as if these two need more airtime?! Very much like "Seinfeld”, Jerry was the least interesting, if the supporting cast were not good performers, "Seinfeld” wouldn’t have been successful at all.
The Abishola character is basically a harpy, a stereotypical, pushy, overly opinionated Karen in a Black body and the white husband is a pushover, basically a wimpy schmuck. Not sure why Bob ‘Hearts' Abishola so much, she’s a one dimensional, always sour-faced, control freak.
Are all straight men this stupid and easy to control?! Yet, so many gay men here at DL are obsessed with straight men.
Plus, due to his real-life stomach bypass surgery, the main actor, Billy Gardell, now looks quite ill.
If CBS is going to reduce the supporting characters airtime, I don’t give this series much longer. This series only works an ensemble sitcom, it won’t work with all the emphasis on the two main characters storylines, because they are not funny in the least.
Typical of most bosses, CBS doesn’t appear to know how to treat their workers, they don’t understand what makes whatever they are selling, extremely successful.
