It never earned a nickname probably because it has no identifiable culture. It's a hodgepodge of the beach scene, Hispanic/Latino community living in the older neighborhoods, and white and Asian middle class professionals in newer subdivisions; in amongst a labyrinth of freeways, office parks, strip malls, and parking lots.

I'm not sure if they still do, but they used to refer to themselves as "America's Finest City." It was even on their police cars.
