Songs that are perfect miniature short stories
In another thread we were discussing Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car," which in addition to being a beautiful song tells a whole little short story in three acts. There aren't many of those now.
Bobbie Gentry probably owns this category with "Ode to Billie Joe" and "Fancy," which are two perfect Southern Gothic short stories, one with a mystery (what did the narrator and Billie Joe throw off the Tallahatchee bridge?).
Less well known: The Postal Service's "The District Sleeps Tonight," where an ex-boyfriend visits his former girlfriend in her new apartment in Washington DC, has to explain why he has a visitor badge stuck to his chest and has a key to the apartment. In the end he realizes that he "was the one worth leaving."
Trying to think of others — oh, yes, "Eleanor Rigby." Other examples?

The story unfolds within the body of the song and refers back to itself when she (they) sing to him:

But I will give you one more chance"

Surprised Neil Young hasn't come up yet in this thread, he wrote a lot of amazing story-songs. Two of his best are "Powderfinger" -- narrated by a dead teenage boy who fails to protect his family from a gang of marauders -- and "Revolution Blues," which is about Charlie Manson. Amazing lyrics:
I see bloody fountains -- And ten million dune buggies, comin' down the mountains -- Well I hear that Laurel Canyon is full of famous stars -- But I hate them worse than lepers, and I'll kill them in their cars

Some of these are great songs, but I question if they're true story songs. I'll give an example of one that's not great, but came to mind: "Poor Side of Town" by Johnny Rivers. On the one hand, the song has Johnny remembering how his girlfriend traded up, only to learn that a rich guy was slumming with her. There's stuff going on, but can we call it a story song? I feel like a story song needs a beginning, middle and end, not just someone's point of view. We've got the beginning and middle, but the end isn't quite there.

Is "Mrs. Robinson" a short-story song? It's certainly not linear, but it paints a picture of a woman being checked into an asylum or rehab, making sure her problem is kept from the kids, the futility of modern politics, and concludes with a striking image of when America was optimistic: "Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?"

This song is based on an elderly couple who went missing after driving to a blues festival or something. Turns out they got lost and drove off a cliff and died.

I'd say no, it's not. A lot of us have seen "The Graduate," but you can't import the plot line of the movie into the song.

A rare short-story song from the disco genre ... "There But For the Grace of God" by Machine ...
Carlos and Carmen Vidal move out of the Bronx to protect their daughter — "Let's find a place they say, somewhere far away, with no blacks, no Jews and no gays" — but the daughter ends up "popping pills and smoking weed," running away at 16 with "a man she met on the street."

[quote]Me and Bobby McGee by Janis Joplin
Agree r174, sung by Janis, written by Kris Kristofferson. Think it counts as a story song, about a relationship, beginning, middle, and ending in Salinas:
Busted flat in Baton Rouge, waitin on a train
Feelin near as faded as my jeans
Bobby thumbed a diesel down, just before it rained,
And we rode it all the way to New Orleans.

Jesus F'ing Christ, some of you people have no idea whatsoever what a story song is.
What the fuck is the story told in "Annie's Song", or "Rainy Days and Mondays"? Or "Layla", for that matter?
This is a story song. It's basically the plot of "Imitation of Life", told in less than 3 minutes.

I have to add that I love that the song at R300 was remade into a track ("Cuba Libre") by Parov Stelar and was being sung live on stage in 2018, eighty years after the Mildred Bailey recording (I say it that way because Red Norvo went on to record "Week End..." with other female vocalists following the Bailey version).
Link below goes to the correct timestamp for the Parov Stelar live version.
