This is just insane.
It is SUCH a bizarre choice for malingerers. Can any real or armchair DL psychologists with a better understanding of sociogenic illness explain this phenomenon?

Someone said on the "baby drop" thread, that a state once made it legal for parents to abandon children of ANY age at E.R.s, not just unwanted newborns, and that the E.R.s were immediately overwhelmed by parents trying to make their mentally ill teenagers wards of the state and somebody else's problem.
If there's a fad for psychogenic Tourette's, I can see why.

Tik Tok is the land of self diagnosis. It's cool to be 'neurodivergent', a bullshit term for oddball. The funniest ones are the multiple personality ones that record their varying 'alts' as they maniacally refer to them.
Attention seeking has a huge outlet with the internet unfortunately.

Had a College housemates with legit Tourette's. She was constantly breaking all our mugs and spilling water from the kettle everywhere, as well as twitching facially or blurting out the odd non-sequiter now and then. She was also constantly knitting or doing intricate makeup, because she claimed the focus required kept her hands and mind busy enough not to tic. She seemed chagrined by her condition, and never told people unless she had to or it became too apparent to pass off. I liked her.

R27 yes, female autism is overreported and self-diagnosed (usually by lonely teens online), though I don't think officially overdiagnosed. Consider that women were almost never diagnosed prior to the 2010s--there's a lot of backlog and a lot of cases that have flown under the radar.
Source: I'm a woman who has it, and just to get an initial assessment leading to diagnosis it was a rigorous multi-step process that took years involving several different unconnected health/medical personnel. It's also not something to wish for or to take lightly.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | May 9, 2023 11:53 PM |
Here’s the OG. She got sooooo much attention for pretending she had to ENDURE music through headphones she started this trend!
by Anonymous | reply 32 | May 9, 2023 11:56 PM |
R32 weird that she struggles with loud music through headphones. It's the only thing that calms me down sometimes.
What gets me is certain jarring environmental sounds that are erratic in tone or rhythm--think throat clearing/coughing, traffic, construction, babies crying. Those can send me feral if they go on too long.
In those moments, my Calmer earbuds are a genuine lifesaver. Idk how they do it, but those little silicone nubs take at least half the agitating power out of the sounds assaulting my brain and make them bearable. They work really well for tinnitus relief, as well. I don't do paid promo or buy into hype for products (fuck hypercapitalism), but if I had to accept a sponsorship deal for anything it would be these, because they actually work as advertised and improve my life.

He did other videos on autistic vs allistic. It’s crazy.

It looks real to me. My daughter was diagnosed with Tourette’s at age 5. That was one of the saddest and scariest days of my life. At the time, watching videos like this freaked me out. We are so fortunate that my daughter grew out of her tics at around 12.
People don’t realize that Tourette’s is a syndrome. There is no blood test or biological marker. It is diagnosed based on a set of behaviors. And it is on a spectrum with anxiety and other disorders (so that if tics go down, anxiety may go up).
I have no problem with people making fun of people. But I expect OP’s video and girl are for real. I wouldn’t make fun of her for her tics. I do question the judgment of putting a video like that out in the world, but maybe it helps some people understand that this condition is real.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | May 10, 2023 3:31 AM |
Through the whole video I was trying to think of who she looks like; it's that British "trans woman" who used to be a child antiques expert. I just google it: Lauren Harries. Seriously, dead ringer.

There was a documentary I watched recently that interviewed a doctor who said he was suddenly overwhelmed by young, teenage girls claiming they had Tourette's. Except that every single one of them was saying the same word over and over. The word was "beans." When he did some research, there was a girl on Tik Tok claiming she had Tourette's (she didn't) and she had a HUGE following. The word she kept saying over and over was...you guessed it, "beans."
This is the new fad. This girl is faking it too.

Why shouldn't deaf people have accurate translations of what's happening in the world around them? Here's an appalling anecdote that comes right before the Mandela mention:
[quote]For instance, in 2017, a news conference for Hurricane Irma featured an interpreter who signed gibberish like “pizza” and “bear monster” instead of information about evacuation orders.

[quote] It doesn't look real to me, the movements are too slow and conscious, she's playing them up rather than trying to look normal, like a person with real tics does.
See that’s what it is for me too. I’ve seen people with Tourette’s from severe to mild and there is a quality to the movement that this girl doesn’t have most of the time with her tics. Exactly as you said, her tics seem way too smooth conscious and calm. Plus, and this part I could be wrong about, but aren’t Tourette’s tics usually repetitive? I know not always, but this girl has an extensive array of tics and outbursts. That said, it would be exhausting to have to keep coming up with all these things to say. So, either she is quite dedicated to her con or she has to a degree (possibly) convinced herself she has Tourette’s. Or, maybe she really has it, but I’d need some people who genuinely do to weigh in before I’d be convinced.

Before I was banned from reddit, I asked reddit when they’ll capitalize gay in light of “black”, and the responses were “never”.
