Why are new male country music stars so disgusting?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And it comes and goes in waves. 1980s boys were expected to salivate over Terri Gibbs playing piano in a tube top, for example.

Can he sing? Does he have good songs? For years Nashville's only criterion for handing out contracts has been that you have to be attractive and look good in a video, and it doesn't matter how bland or boring your music is. If that's changing, it's fine with me.

Terri Gibbs was never marketed as a sex symbol, and she was hardly typical of the women in country music of that era, which included Juice Newton, Dolly Parton, Lucinda Williams and Reba McEntire among many other attractive women.

Terri Gibbs was the 80s sex bomb of country, the Farrah Fawcett if you will.

I like Chris Stapleton and I love his beard his hair voice and I think he's a great singer. He reminds me of a Viking. Hot, baby, hot.

Every teen boy I knew in the early 80s had that poster of Terri Gibbs straddling the mechanical bull in her olive green two piece bathing suit.

Luke Combs may not be attractive, but his cover of Tracy Chapman's Fast Car has become a hit again (Top 10 on Billboard's Hot Country). He's not afraid to do a song from a black lesbian songwriter, and not change a single pronoun. He has even stated that it has been one of his favorite songs for decades. Maybe he has exposed some of today's country-loving youth to Tracy Chapman.

I don't think George Strait would have done that.

Props to him as the narrator to refer to himself as a "checkout girl" as Tracy did.

It made me remember when "Fast Car" came out. Nothing at all like it on the radio, and everyone loved it.

The reason country singer look so redneck is because gone are the days when being a country singer meant you had made it- so you wore better clothes to show you were a successful singer. Nudie suits, cool boots, and a cowboy hat. Now they dress like they just got out of bed because their audience wants to believe they are just average guys who can sing and entertain. The problem is most of them can't sing, write a good song, or even show the humbleness of the prior generation. Just dirty shirts, jeans, beards, and dust on their boots because they are real working men. But it's just another costume- it doesn't mean anymore than wearing a gold cross around your neck. You are not a Christian because you wear a cross, and you are not real because your clothes look like they came off a Walmart sale.

Most of todays current crop of male county artists are red hot looking. NOT like Combs.

Jamey Johnson is bearded and has a low, sexy voice. Here is singing ("Give It Away") with Lee Ann Womack at a George Strait tribute concert. In recent photos, he looks terrible.

R33 Lonesome Dove was the perfect miniseries, very true to the book. Not that awards should mean everything but it did win the Pulitzer. McMurtry did a beautiful job of describing the true west. The book and the series - masterpieces.
