Palladino ballet drama 'Étoile' gets two-season Amazon order

With Luke Kirby, Camille Cottin, Simon Callow, David Alvarez, Gideon Glick.
Set in New York City and Paris, the eight-episode [italic]Étoile[/italic] follows the dancers and artistic staff of two world-renowned ballet companies, as they embark on an ambitious gambit to save their storied institutions by swapping their most talented stars.

Glick and Callow are openly gay. Is Kirby gay?

by Anonymousreply 1April 27, 2023 12:32 PM

I don't think so, he was married to Alison Elliott and now to Andrea Sarubbi.

Look who's back! The possibly still closeted Canadian who played everyone's fave queen on GG.

The big news however, announced back in December, is that Charlotte Gainsbourg has replaced Camille Cottin. So that sucks, but it's also interesting that Cottin is now gravitating towards movies and Gainsbourg towards TV.

I thought Simon Callow died last year. (?)

Gideon Glick has a remarkably steady career.

by Anonymousreply 5January 22, 2024 7:04 PM

r4 Nope, still alive. You Mandela Effect'ed yourself.

by Anonymousreply 6January 22, 2024 7:19 PM

Hope it's better that the other ballet drama - Flesh and Blood? Something like that.

by Anonymousreply 7January 22, 2024 7:42 PM

I expect this one to be quirky and funny, just like other Palladino projects. So, a completely different beast than Flesh and Bone (2015) with DL fave Ben Daniels.

by Anonymousreply 8January 22, 2024 7:47 PM

I liked Flesh and Bone. There was a lot going on but it wasn't boring.

This handsome Parisian ballerino, who is apparently also a classically trained pianist and sings beautifully on top, has been added to the regular cast. I could just EAT him.

Can't wait for this show, it's gonna be so good, I can just tell. Still butthurt about my queen Cottin being recast, but you can't have everything.

All eight episodes out April 24th.

Luke Kirby looks as beautiful as ever. As does (oddly enough) Gideon Glick, who looked like a mousy Jew on Maisel. That new hairstyle with a couple of silver stands here and there is doing wonders for him. I actually want to fuck him now?

It's odd how they promote these things; Gideon Glick, for instance, is only in one episode.

(I think it's interesting that Glick looks so different in most every picture of him.)
Gideon Glick, for instance, is only in one episode.

Wait, what? What the fuck, that just made me so mad! And I agree, why even bother announcing a casting for one episode only, seems like false advertising.

by Anonymousreply 13March 18, 2025 2:03 PM

It will probably be just as inaccurate and OTT as "Mozart in the Jungle" was.

by Anonymousreply 14March 18, 2025 3:13 PM

Maisel was also pretty inaccurate when it comes to the realities of stand-up, didn't stop people from watching the shit out of it.

And the Palladinos apparently already did a ballet show once, more than a decade ago. So I suppose it'll be as accurate as that one was, if you're familiar with it.

Trailer. I thought this was gonna be as comedic as Maisel, but it seems to be leaning more toward the Gilmore Girls tone. That has me worried, but we'll see.

Lots of hot men, though. How does Luke Kirby look a decade younger than he did on Maisel?! Gideon Glick with a crazy glowup as well, still can't believe how fuckable he is all of a sudden.

That show was ok until the mandatory references to Black Swan.

I hated Bunheads. The anorexic lead actress was such a ham.

by Anonymousreply 18March 27, 2025 6:56 AM

I loved Bunheads for some reason. It reminded me of when I was a weird little hick going to a performing arts school in Texas.

by Anonymousreply 19March 27, 2025 7:05 AM

Yeah, Sutton Foster had not yet learned to tone it down for the camera in Bunheads. The curve of a theater actress.

Amy is publicly bitching about Amazon releasing all episodes of Étoile at once, I think it's safe to say the show will end with the second season.

Well, all 8 episodes have dropped. Anyone watch it yet?

by Anonymousreply 22April 24, 2025 1:12 PM

Just finished the second episode. The premiere was quite rough, with one unlikable character after another being introduced to us, but the second one is a vast improvement. I was concerned after that shitty trailer, but it just goes to show how unsuitable trailers are for showing off the vibe of Palladino projects, their whole aesthetic just gets lost in the trailer process.

The poster upthread who said Gideon Glick was only in one episode LIED to us and broke my heart in the process. He has amazing, amazing chemistry with the guy at r10, can't wait to see that romance develop. Ivan is giving him a run for his money in the acting department, and Gideon's done legitimate theatre, on Broadway! Where the fuck has France been hiding him, he has charisma coming out of his ass.

So many hot guys on this show rocking perfect asses, it really is sensory overload at times. And now the gorgeous David Alvarez enters the stage, as if to dare me not to pause every five seconds to admire his pits and abs.

I still can't watch Gainsbourg's scenes without imagining Cottin in the role. I bet her agent advised her to pull out because it really is the exact same manic role she played in Call My Agent.

by Anonymousreply 23April 24, 2025 8:43 PM

Finished this yesterday and thought it was okay. Wish it had more characters that weren't so obnoxious. The signature Palladino quirkiness has been dialled down substantially and there are only a couple precious moments here and there. The wardrobe isn't precious at all like it was on Maisel.

Luke Kirby shows his boyish pancake ass, so that was nice.

Hopefully we see WAY more of Glick and Gabin in the second season, those two are too cute together.

by Anonymousreply 24April 29, 2025 11:22 AM

Oh, and I liked how much time was devoted to the corrupt patron of the arts thing. I don't think that's something you'd see even five years ago, but thanks to the Sacklers, it would have been weird if they hadn't addressed it.
