Beetlejuice 2 Confirmed

35 years in the making.

Beetlejuice 2 is officially in development at Warner Bros. A sizzle reel of logos briefly showed off the film at the Warner Bros. Discovery showcase at CinemaCon 2023.

Fans of the Tim Burton classic have been hoping for a sequel since 1988 but rumours had been ramping up in the past few years, most recently as Wednesday's Jenna Ortega was said to be in negotiations to join the project as the daughter of Winona Ryder’s Lydia from the original.

According to the same report, the sequel is set to begin production in May or June 2023, with Burton and Michael Keaton both set to return.

None of this is confirmed, of course, though we now at least know the film is definitely happening.

Keaton began teasing his involvement more than ten years ago, and admitted to talking with Burton about it a few years later in 2014. The director said a sequel was "closer than ever" in 2017, around the same time that a script reportedly underwent a rewrite.

Given that just a logo showed up in a half-second sizzle reel we don't know anything else about the film yet, though it certainly appears as though both Burton and Keaton are eager to return.

This will probably suck

Chipmunk face Jenna Ortega is in talks to join the production. No thanks.

Probably, R1?

by Anonymousreply 4April 26, 2023 2:27 PM

If they get Catherine O’Hara and Winona Ryder I’m all for it.

by Anonymousreply 5April 26, 2023 2:32 PM

Does anyone remember that the original was considered a bomb? Panned by critics and a disappointment at the box office? No?

I think maybe the Under-40s saw this repeatedly on cable growing up, and it has achieved a sort of belived nostalgia for them.

by Anonymousreply 6April 26, 2023 2:34 PM

What R5 said. Can't bring Alec back since he's unrecognizably fat but Geena could probably pull off the frozen-in-time look for a ghost.

by Anonymousreply 7April 26, 2023 2:36 PM

Have never seen the original

by Anonymousreply 8April 26, 2023 2:40 PM

Two thumbs down.

by Anonymousreply 9April 26, 2023 2:41 PM

As a kid I loved the original. Just hope this doesn't end up like Coming 2 America.

by Anonymousreply 10April 26, 2023 2:48 PM

Oh, how far the cast has fallen: Alec is now a murderer, Winona has lost her marbles, Jeffrey Jones is a registered sex offender and Geena Davis is a geriatric mother of teenage twins.

At least Catherine O'Hara and Michael Keaton still seem have their shit together.

by Anonymousreply 11April 26, 2023 3:21 PM

And Otho is dead. I need an Otho ghost. They can cgi or deepfake or whatever

by Anonymousreply 12April 26, 2023 3:29 PM

“Who needs this? It’s not funny.”-Gene Siskel on the original, Datalounge on the sequel

by Anonymousreply 13April 26, 2023 4:24 PM

With the exception of Top Gun Maverick, have ANY of these 5000 years later sequels been good?

Gen Z will show up at least. Jenna Ortega is their queen.

The original story was very self-contained and cut and dry. What is there to pull from and continue?

by Anonymousreply 15May 9, 2023 7:39 PM

As long as Michael Keaton is in it it will be watchable. Somebody needs to rein Burton in, though. He overdoes his aesthetic and kills his own stories.

by Anonymousreply 16May 9, 2023 7:41 PM

R15 how sweet of you to think there is any concern in this film for story.

CASH, BABY!

by Anonymousreply 17May 9, 2023 7:43 PM

Cool! Danny Elfman just confirmed his involvement.

The cast includes Keaton, Winona Ryder, Jenna Ortega, and Catherine O’Hara.

The script was written by the Wednesday writers.

Keaton is fucking brilliant and Beetlejuice is one of the greatest films and concepts ever made!

by Anonymousreply 19May 9, 2023 7:45 PM

[quote] It was recently confirmed in a report from Deadline that the script for Tim Burton's Beetlejuice 2 is being written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. The two writers are best known for creating the hit Netflix series Wednesday and the classic DC Superman series Smallville.

by Anonymousreply 20May 9, 2023 7:45 PM

I even loved the Beetlejuice Animated Series!

by Anonymousreply 21May 9, 2023 7:45 PM

I appreciate R18 & R19 's optimism

I think the odds of this movie being good are somewhere in the area of The Winds of Winter being out before this film.

by Anonymousreply 22May 9, 2023 7:47 PM

R6 I think it's considered a cult classic now.

by Anonymousreply 23May 9, 2023 7:50 PM

I think it did OK R6. Check your history.

Beetlejuice opened theatrically in the United States on March 30, 1988, earning US$8,030,897 in its opening weekend. The film eventually grossed US$74,664,632 in North America. Beetlejuice was a financial success,[24] recouping its US$15 million budget, and was the 10th-highest grossing film of 1988.[25][26]

Beetlejuice was met with a mostly positive response. Based on 62 reviews collected by Rotten Tomatoes, Beetlejuice received an 85% overall approval rating with a weighted average of 7.2/10. The website's critical consensus reads, "Brilliantly bizarre and overflowing with ideas, Beetlejuice offers some of Michael Keaton's most deliciously manic work - and creepy, funny fun for the whole family."[27] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 70 out of 100, based on 18 reviews.[28] Audiences surveyed by CinemaScore gave the film a B on a grade scale of A to F.[29]

At the 61st Academy Awards, Beetlejuice won the Academy Award for Best Makeup, (Steve La Porte, Ve Neill and Robert Short.)[36] while the British Academy of Film and Television Arts nominated the film with Best Visual Effects and Makeup at the 42nd British Academy Film Awards.[37][38]

And I really doubt the sequel will be so lucky.

by Anonymousreply 24May 9, 2023 7:53 PM

The original screenwriter, Warren Skaaren, was a friend of mine; great guy. He died many years ago -- he told me once that he had to fight tooth and nail with Burton to get that amazing dinner scene into the movie -- Burton thought it was over the top. It's the best scene in the entire film.

by Anonymousreply 25May 9, 2023 7:54 PM

It is^.

by Anonymousreply 26May 9, 2023 7:54 PM

Burton thought something was over the top.

by Anonymousreply 27May 9, 2023 7:58 PM

This should be as incredible as Independence Day 2

by Anonymousreply 28May 9, 2023 8:05 PM

Tim Burton movies: a few fun, original ideas tossed into cliched, forgettable, messy storytelling

I like the idea of the Beetlejuice movie but the actual movie? Not so much.

by Anonymousreply 29May 9, 2023 8:34 PM

The movie will be unwatchable unless Dick Cavett reprises his role.

by Anonymousreply 30May 9, 2023 8:37 PM

Delia, you’re a flake. You have always been a flake.

by Anonymousreply 31May 9, 2023 8:42 PM

Holland Taylor sans make-up at [R18]?

by Anonymousreply 32May 9, 2023 9:19 PM

I think it could be great. I'm hopeful...

by Anonymousreply 33May 9, 2023 9:23 PM

It was a modest hit. It also spawned a kids cartoon a year later, which I watched as a child (possibly before I even saw the movie it was based on). That was a solid cartoon.

by Anonymousreply 34May 9, 2023 9:43 PM

I saw the cartoon years before I saw the movie. I was...confused

by Anonymousreply 35May 9, 2023 9:49 PM

The movie is oddly wholesome. I remember loving the cartoon as a kid and thinking it was hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 36May 9, 2023 9:54 PM

I am normally not a big fan of sequels, but this could be good.

by Anonymousreply 37May 9, 2023 10:04 PM

R37 totally....

by Anonymousreply 38May 9, 2023 10:07 PM

Top Gun: Maverick was a great movie that was a sequel- on top of that it's basically a remake. It is possible.

by Anonymousreply 39May 9, 2023 10:38 PM

R39 name another vastly delayed sequel (of which there have been MANY) that was good.

by Anonymousreply 40May 9, 2023 10:41 PM

Oh wow! After reading the headline, but before reading the post, I was already coming here to post "they have to cast Jenna Ortega as Winona's daughter!"

And it sounds like they did!!

by Anonymousreply 41May 9, 2023 10:48 PM

[quote][R39] name another vastly delayed sequel (of which there have been MANY) that was good

I am not R39 but immediately thought of The Color of Money and Mad Max: Fury Road.

by Anonymousreply 42May 9, 2023 10:54 PM

I’m getting excited about it!

The original was lightning in a bottle. The only complete great work by Burton.

by Anonymousreply 53May 10, 2023 6:24 AM

It really was a perfect storm...but hardly Burton's only success.

I suspect this will be nothing more than a cash grab with a popular IP. Beetlejuice merch still sells well every Halloween.

...the guys from Smallville are writing this. Why?

I'm glad we're not getting Beetlejuice in Hawaii, which I think was the original sequel idea, but still...I have serious doubts.

This could be Son Of The Mask bad. I really hope it isn't.

...where TF is Catharine O'Hara? She was a standout in the original amd should be in this.

by Anonymousreply 54May 10, 2023 6:42 AM

R54 we're not that desperate

by Anonymousreply 55May 10, 2023 6:44 AM

If they dare to make another shitty sequel, by the time you read this I will have j̶u̶m̶p̶e̶d̶ PLUMMETED off the Winter River bridge.

by Anonymousreply 56May 10, 2023 7:35 AM

Have no fear!

by Anonymousreply 57May 10, 2023 7:36 AM

Don't joke about that r57....!

by Anonymousreply 58May 10, 2023 7:46 AM

[quote]Honestly does this need a sequel.

Yes. This is one of the few films where I genuinely am delighted to hear there will be a sequel.

by Anonymousreply 59May 10, 2023 8:08 AM

But we're all hoping it'll have that weird 80s energy.

The reality is, its probably an attempt at a franchise. They'll copy big scenes, like the dinner posession, but use new music - Lizzo? - and embarrass themselves.

The jokes will be overt for the lowest common denominator audience they're desperate for.

And what is Beetlejuice's arc here? Force another teen girl into marriage?

This will surely be done by committee and a rehash.

by Anonymousreply 60May 10, 2023 8:24 AM

[quote]This could be Son Of The Mask bad. I really hope it isn't.

That was only bad because Cher refused to return. But it looks like most of the cast is returning here.

by Anonymousreply 61May 10, 2023 8:27 AM

The Wednesday writers ? Does this mean a certain little bitch is going to change her lines again ?

by Anonymousreply 62May 10, 2023 8:30 AM

Sequels used to come out under a decade from the original, usually less than five years. Sequels 35 years later when half the cast have one foot in the grave and cute kids are middle aged don’t really appeal to me.

by Anonymousreply 63May 10, 2023 10:10 AM

[quote]The original story was very self-contained and cut and dry. What is there to pull from and continue?

it's about ghosts and the afterlife, and an eternal demon/poltergeist character. There are literally endless possibilities for a sequel within that framework.

by Anonymousreply 64May 10, 2023 3:49 PM

I HATE NEW THINGS.

by Anonymousreply 65May 10, 2023 3:55 PM

True, R64. They have plenty of plots from the cartoon to borrow from too.

by Anonymousreply 66May 10, 2023 7:04 PM

Lori Lightfoot will do a great job

by Anonymousreply 67May 10, 2023 7:05 PM

They're not going to borrow cartoon plots.

....do you not know how cartoons are regarded in Hollywood?

If the brain trust at WB couldn't see the Justice League cartoon as a strong template from which to build their live action franchise, they're certainly not going to draw inspiration from the "now we can sell lunchboxes and stickers to dumb kids!" Beetlejuice show.

by Anonymousreply 68May 11, 2023 1:45 PM

Can’t wait until Ortega tells us everything that’s wrong with the screenplay.

by Anonymousreply 69May 11, 2023 1:51 PM

When did this go from a remake to a sequel? The original plan was to remake the original with Jenna Ortega as Lydia, Jack Quaid as Alec Baldwin, Zendaya as Geena Davis, and Pete Davidson as Beetlejuice. Michael Keaton was not involved at all.

by Anonymousreply 70May 11, 2023 5:18 PM

R70 that was never a thing.

by Anonymousreply 71May 11, 2023 5:20 PM

Better a sequel than a remake.

by Anonymousreply 72May 11, 2023 5:40 PM

Well, it's been confirmed Catherine O'Hara is returning. Too bad Otho won't be in the movie. Or Juno. You know there won't be any characters to be able to match them in the sequel.

Doubt Alec Baldwin or Geena Davis will be it unless it's a cameo. Both were good in it and it was one of the rare times Baldwin was able to totally shed his jerk aura.

Not holding out too much hope for it being as nearly good as the original, since it's hard to recapture everything that made the original work. I'll probably watch it though.

by Anonymousreply 73May 11, 2023 10:12 PM

Big Hocus Pocus 2 energy.

by Anonymousreply 74May 11, 2023 10:16 PM

Where did this Ortega woman come from and why is she being stuffed down our throats? She must suck a mean dick.

I remember a movie she was in where she fucks that Maddie chick Dance Moms.

by Anonymousreply 75May 11, 2023 10:24 PM

R55 Jk! We are.

by Anonymousreply 76May 11, 2023 10:33 PM

She isn’t being shoved down our throats now. She’s been with us for decades.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 77May 11, 2023 10:34 PM

R75 I’m not a fan at all, but she’s built a career from a number of successful projects. Her recent career trajectory has involved moving from recurring roles (Jane the Virgin), to supporting regular/lead (You, Scream), to lead (Wednesday, and now Beetlejuice 2).

by Anonymousreply 78May 11, 2023 10:37 PM

R75: She’s multicultural and checks a lot of boxes. That’s why she’s being shoved down our throats. Other than that, I don’t see any appeal. Like it or not we will be stuck with her and Zendaya until they’re at least 35.

by Anonymousreply 79May 12, 2023 12:43 AM

R75: The one who must really suck a mean dick is the other Scream chick Melissa Barrera. That girl has the charisma of a damp rag.

by Anonymousreply 80May 12, 2023 12:47 AM

I've liked her in stuff (X, Scream 5) but apparently Gen Z completely lost their minds over Wednesday. I thought it was "ok".

by Anonymousreply 81May 12, 2023 7:25 AM

Will there be sandworms?

by Anonymousreply 82May 12, 2023 7:26 AM

Good, I want some good comedies.

by Anonymousreply 83May 12, 2023 7:33 AM

Those people saying the first BEETLEJUICE was a bomb or modest hit are wrong. It was a big hit in theaters and even more popular afterward on home video.

BUDGET: $15 million ($38 million today)

GROSS: $75 million ($190 million today)

The film came out in March 1988. Lots of Beetlejuice Halloween costumes that year. I was in third grade. Most everyone I knew liked the movie.

by Anonymousreply 84May 12, 2023 7:46 AM

Yup. It was a huge crossover hit. Parents liked it and let their kids watch it, even with the macabre and adult humor...the toys sold and the kids show was successful.

Very unique situation.

I'm thrilled Catherine is back. I want to see more crazy art from her character.

by Anonymousreply 85May 12, 2023 4:52 PM

R65 WTF is NEW about a sequel to a nearly 40 year old movie????

by Anonymousreply 86May 12, 2023 11:36 PM

Glad they are doing a sequel and not a reboot, with some kid who looks like keaton but can't act. It may actually be good?

by Anonymousreply 87May 13, 2023 3:26 AM

I doubt she's playing his kid. She's playing Rider's character Lydia Deets' daughter.

by Anonymousreply 88May 14, 2023 3:18 AM

I think they mean Theroux.

by Anonymousreply 89May 14, 2023 3:23 AM

r21 Speaking of, I wonder if they'll pull some plots from the animated series? That was basically a continuation of sorts. Talk about childhood nostalgia. Sigh.

by Anonymousreply 95May 19, 2023 7:05 AM

A zonked-out, kleptomaniac Winona Ryder plays the new Beetlejuice.

by Anonymousreply 96May 19, 2023 7:07 AM

R86 Wizard of Oz was released in 1939 and got a sequel and a prequel in 1985 and 2013 respectively. Gone with the Wind (also directed by Fleming) was released around the same time and got a sequel miniseries in 1994.

Beetlejuice may not be as big but long gaps in between movies and sequels isn't unheard of. In fact it's becoming even more common these as it's much easier and much cheaper to make remake or continue old stories than develop new ones.

by Anonymousreply 97May 19, 2023 7:52 AM

Beatlejuice was awesome. Alec only killed a couple girls on the set. LOL.
