What's with Gen Z and autism?

Scrolling through my niece's Tik Tok out of boredom and half of the videos are by people who claim to be autistic -- most of whom appear to be self-diagnosed. These are normal looking, normally behaving adolescents who have amassed large followings. Something doesn't add up. Aren't autists supposed to be...losers and recluses?

by Anonymousreply 49April 4, 2025 10:25 AM

*The A word has entered the chat*

by Anonymousreply 1April 26, 2023 7:17 AM

Another A word - ADHD.

by Anonymousreply 2April 26, 2023 7:22 AM

It's the new soft alternative to being T that doesn't require you to permanently change your body.

And yes, it's for those lacking in personality who are trying to compensate for that. Everyone needs to be special, being a regular boring normie is worse than being dead.

by Anonymousreply 3April 26, 2023 7:43 AM

It's fashionable to be autistic.

Autistic people are very close to artistic people.

by Anonymousreply 4April 26, 2023 9:25 AM

Losers and recluses?? lmao They're special and have superpowers.

by Anonymousreply 5April 26, 2023 10:09 AM

It’s a good excuse for people who constantly post videos of themselves online. If they fuck up in some way, which is inevitable with Gen Z’s obsession with looking for outrage, there is a built in excuse. Plus protection. It’s not okay to attack the neurodivergent.

by Anonymousreply 6April 26, 2023 3:41 PM

It seems so offensive, given that it is a real condition that is very difficult to live with. Some kind of appropriation? Isn’t that bad too?

by Anonymousreply 7April 26, 2023 4:01 PM

R5, autistics don’t have super powers, they have brain damage and are usually low intellect.

by Anonymousreply 8April 26, 2023 4:30 PM

“Autistic people are very close to artistic people“

Lmao autistic people are very close to retarded people .

by Anonymousreply 9April 26, 2023 4:32 PM

It gives them an asshole pass, and they like it.

by Anonymousreply 10April 26, 2023 7:18 PM

Because in this new scene being trans to be special is not special enough anymore - now you have to be autistic or have multiple personality disorder or something else to make you stand out amongst the purple hair and anime.

by Anonymousreply 11April 26, 2023 7:38 PM

Why are you creeping on your niece’s TikTok and how can you possibly draw the conclusion that the majority of those who declare themselves autistic are self diagnosed?!

by Anonymousreply 12April 26, 2023 7:50 PM

Ok R12, nap time.

by Anonymousreply 13April 26, 2023 9:22 PM

It not only gives them an excuse for having crap social skills and other personal deficits, they think it gives them a reason to stop making any effort to improve their interpersonal skills!

They don't realize that people with real autism need to work very hard on adapting to a real world that doesn't consider social skills to be optional.

by Anonymousreply 14April 26, 2023 10:04 PM

R14, They are in a cult . So self centered.

by Anonymousreply 15April 27, 2023 12:02 AM

There's a strong co-occurrence or comorbidity of autism and ADHD.

we probably won't know about key environmental factors underly the huge rise in numbers for a long, long time. Prepare for even more weirdness and disfunction, like the current gender dysphoria and trans explosion, which will compound in the next generation. ADHD, Autism, trauma and their attendant emotional regulation issues are all intermingling and exacerbating one another.

by Anonymousreply 16April 27, 2023 12:13 AM

How morbid. How co-morbid!

by Anonymousreply 17April 2, 2025 5:47 AM

They really do seem to just love it

by Anonymousreply 18April 2, 2025 5:58 AM

Gen Z is generation autism and this is why they should never be allowed to hold any power or office.

They will forever be beholden to the kindness of millennial strangers who outnumber them.

by Anonymousreply 19April 2, 2025 6:09 AM

Microplastics and old spunk.

by Anonymousreply 20April 2, 2025 1:25 PM

It's just all bullshit, ME ME ME, IM SO SPECIAL, usually white kids from the suburbs.

by Anonymousreply 21April 2, 2025 9:32 PM

They're attention seeking whores OP.

by Anonymousreply 22April 2, 2025 9:38 PM

DL, always ahead of the curve, has had its own autism troll for a while now, someone who dispensed diagnoses of autism from his basement pretty much daily.

by Anonymousreply 23April 2, 2025 9:46 PM

I blame Elon Musk. He claimed to be on the spectrum (which he is not) to cover for his narcissism, lack of emotional intelligence and poor social skills, and his admirers followed suit.

by Anonymousreply 24April 2, 2025 10:03 PM

We have always been this way. Now we are more open and accepting. We had it in the 60's, 70's, 80's, etc. Just not diagnosed. Yay progress!

by Anonymousreply 25April 2, 2025 10:14 PM

They found out that ADHD and autism don't just affect defiant little boys and nerdy shut-ins

by Anonymousreply 26April 2, 2025 11:08 PM

[quote]Aren't autists supposed to be...losers and recluses?

I don't know. Are they, Steve?

by Anonymousreply 27April 3, 2025 1:06 AM

[quote]Autistic people are very close to artistic people.

If Elon Musk comes anywhere near me I'll scream.

by Anonymousreply 28April 3, 2025 1:07 AM

Because it makes them adorably special and childlike, like this phony fish..

She’s sooooo brave! And soooo cute with her HAPPY HANDS, mom jeans and trendy gangland notched brow!

by Anonymousreply 29April 3, 2025 1:16 AM

Musk does seem pretty fucking autistic

by Anonymousreply 30April 3, 2025 7:57 AM

How about Bella Ramsey? Both nonbinary AND autistic, but 100% attention seeking.

by Anonymousreply 31April 3, 2025 3:40 PM

I guess they are a millenial though^^

by Anonymousreply 32April 3, 2025 3:44 PM

It is a spectrum. My niece is severely autistic. She is developmentally disabled. She draws and writes at about a 5th-grade level even though she is 20.

by Anonymousreply 33April 3, 2025 4:01 PM

I agree that a lot of younger people use it as an excuse to cover their poor social skills - and an excuse to NOT grow and develop them.

But I also disagree with this 'wide spectrum' - which is a fucking catch-all for anybody to use unfortunately because people don't understand the three phases of autism.

I hate using the term spectrum for anything because it allows for such misdiagnosis and warped interpretations.

A very close #2 is "I have anxiety issues" - bitch EVERYBODY DOES in their teens and 20s. It only dissipates in your 30s when you have enough life experience and have conquered these fears.

by Anonymousreply 34April 3, 2025 4:07 PM

Do Spectrum Vitamins help at all?

by Anonymousreply 35April 3, 2025 5:32 PM

The spectrum? Is that the rainbow flag?

by Anonymousreply 36April 3, 2025 5:40 PM

At least my prism gives me a perspective

by Anonymousreply 37April 3, 2025 5:43 PM

it’s round up, y’all. monsanto-bayer is responsible for more death and destruction than anyone could calculate.

by Anonymousreply 38April 3, 2025 5:44 PM

r23- look under your seats! you’re all going home with AUUUUUUUUTISM!

by Anonymousreply 39April 3, 2025 5:54 PM

Also, linking any sort of offbeat interest or lack of social skills they have on autism is a big cop out. So you like trains, so what.

by Anonymousreply 40April 3, 2025 6:04 PM

The people who say they were misdiagnosed are the ones that misdiagnosed them, so now they get paid to fix it?!!! They're out for that money of course, shitty grifting crooks.

by Anonymousreply 41April 3, 2025 6:54 PM

I think it is the vaccines.

by Anonymousreply 42April 3, 2025 6:56 PM

They usually have a laundry list:

ADHD

"On the Spectrum"

Disabled with some vague crippling auto-immune condition that doesn't allow them to do things they should do (work) but does mysteriously allow them to do things they want to do (go to Disneyland; skydive; take 2 week vacations in Tulum)

Generational Trauma (Mom said no to that new X box)

And, needless to say, they're usually some form of trans/non binary/queer but not really actually queer if it means actually having genital to genital sex with someone with the same genitals they have

Also: not just Gen Z. Younger Gen Xers down through the Millennials also can follow these very similar patterns.

They're always broke but have too many pets. They crowdsource for rent one month then Taylor Swift tickets the next month.

They're very tired.

by Anonymousreply 43April 3, 2025 8:27 PM

Easily identifiable by:

Manic Panic hair badly applied.

Self cut hair or shaggy "I can't be bothered to get my hair cut' tangled messy hair

The boys (and some of the girls): tragic facial hair

Nose rings and other piercings

Baggy clothes, many of which are actually pajamas.

Not much washing involved with bodies/clothes

Bodies tend to be blobby and out of shape

Very poorly educated. Believes the last thing they "learned" on TikTok. (To be fair, this applies to most generations now)

Juvenile. Scared of sex. Strong desire to remain children for as long as possible.

One plus: Gen Z not into tattoos like the older Millennials and Gen X were

by Anonymousreply 44April 3, 2025 8:34 PM

Ooops. Left out: Super fussy eaters. Either attempt to eat too healthy (a few) or only eat junk. And, very specific junk.

by Anonymousreply 45April 3, 2025 8:36 PM

Getting rid of the Asperger's category was a big mistake. It fucks with how people think of and talk about autism. My sister's son has the fragile X form of autism, he's 20 and wears a diaper. He's about 4 mentally.

by Anonymousreply 46April 3, 2025 8:52 PM

A lot of Gen X parents smoked drugs and alcohol in utero and that explains their fucked up offspring

by Anonymousreply 47April 4, 2025 8:38 AM

Good news R33! Your niece sounds like she can get elected to the House of Reps just like us!

by Anonymousreply 48April 4, 2025 8:46 AM

[quote]It only dissipates in your 30s when you have enough life experience and have conquered these fears

'IF you have enough life experience and have conquered those fears.'
