When I went to U of T in the late 1980's, many joked it stood for University of Tokyo because of all the Japanese students. The majority of all the homeless/drugged out zombies I see downtown are white. The immigrants have brought their cultures and with them fantastic foods to a city so boring Peter Ustinov described as "New York City if it was run by the Swiss". I was last in Toronto in 2000 and it was a delightful city. Have things changed that much?

The difference between Mexicans and many middle easterners is that Mexicans don't try to change everyone else. They are appreciative of the opportunities available to them in the US and take full advantage of them. For the most part they are quiet, law abiding people who work hard to make sure they don't attract the attention of law enforcement. They live within their means, which means that many times they have multiple generations of family living in the same house. They work not one job, but at times several jobs.

I have a close friend who owns tons of rental houses. He says his Hispanic tenants are the best tenants he's ever had. He chooses wisely, but the Hispanics make sure they pay their rent on time and cause him no trouble. It's the Americans who cause all the problems and keep him in busy with evictions every month.

Resistance is anything but futile, damn it.

OP, that is the epitome of racism. Different groups of people assimilate differently and at different speeds. Generally when there are surrounded mostly by people of their own ethnicity, there is less opportunity or incentive to assimilate, so it falls to their children, or the next generation, to follow-through. As a lifelong New Yorker my understanding is that people who consider their neighborhood or city a shit-hole because of "foreigners" are pretty much xenophobes.
