Jodie Comer’s “Prima Facie” debuts on Broadway tonight

I may have to go see it. I wonder if they will change any of the dialogue from the London production now that it’s in NY.

R1 it debuted tonight

by Anonymousreply 2April 23, 2023 11:27 PM

Who?

by Anonymousreply 3April 23, 2023 11:27 PM

Stolen from the Geoffrey Rush Accusation scandal

by Anonymousreply 4April 23, 2023 11:30 PM

I never heard of Judie Comer. Does she sing or is it just acting?

by Anonymousreply 5April 23, 2023 11:38 PM

It's a feminist monologue

(i.e. rather tedious for the audience)

by Anonymousreply 6April 23, 2023 11:39 PM

Yet ANOTHER dramatic production about #MeToo, and the others have all been so awful.

The plays have included "Anomaly," "How to Defend Yourself," "The Best We Could"; the movies "She Said," "Women Talking," "Promising Young Woman," "Bombshell," "Tar"... is there nothing else to make plays about?

Who wants to go see these? Apparently no one, since these all have been bombs. And yet, they keep coming...

by Anonymousreply 7April 23, 2023 11:39 PM

[quote] Yet ANOTHER dramatic production about #MeToo

And so many advertisements harp on this theme.

Sentimental miniature movies dripping with emotion, throbbing voice-overs to the accompaniment of a tinkling high-pitched piano.

by Anonymousreply 8April 23, 2023 11:55 PM

R1 The London production was streamed.

by Anonymousreply 9April 23, 2023 11:59 PM

Why pay money to strangers so they can brow-beat us for "our sins"?

by Anonymousreply 10April 24, 2023 12:01 AM

R9 ummm what

by Anonymousreply 11April 24, 2023 12:02 AM

R11 The London production of Prima Facie was streamed in cinemas, and is on NTL At Home.

by Anonymousreply 12April 24, 2023 12:03 AM

R12 ok. Thanks for clarifying what you meant.

by Anonymousreply 13April 24, 2023 12:04 AM

"Stream" is a noun and a verb.

The verb has five meanings; and I'm guessing this is to play video or sound on a computer, mobile device, TV etc by getting it as a continuous stream rather than having to download it.

Is it cheaper this way or not?

by Anonymousreply 14April 24, 2023 12:07 AM

The tickets for this show must be over-priced.

They raked in £722,000 ($899,666) in its first seven days of previews, where tickets are typically sold at a reduced price.

by Anonymousreply 15April 24, 2023 12:10 AM

It did amazing out West

by Anonymousreply 16April 24, 2023 12:12 AM

^ California?

by Anonymousreply 17April 24, 2023 12:13 AM

Bryan Safi saw a preview performance and had only great things to say about it.

by Anonymousreply 18April 24, 2023 12:13 AM

It did amazing in London. Was always sold out and everyone raved.

by Anonymousreply 19April 24, 2023 12:14 AM

R18 everyone says it’s amazing. The person that claimed it’s terrible and poor acting is the troll

by Anonymousreply 20April 24, 2023 12:14 AM

How is it amazing?

by Anonymousreply 21April 24, 2023 12:16 AM

They rushed to bring it to Broadway because everyone is certain she will get a Tony now next to her Olivier for this performance.

by Anonymousreply 22April 24, 2023 12:18 AM

The feminist shows off her body with a certain over-publicised short Irishman.

Bryan Safi??

That's like saying Saffie Monsoon saw it and only had great things to say about it.

by Anonymousreply 24April 24, 2023 12:20 AM

The actres and the show are both overrated

by Anonymousreply 25April 24, 2023 12:21 AM

is this a "real" show?

by Anonymousreply 26April 24, 2023 12:22 AM

R23 he’s 5’11

by Anonymousreply 27April 24, 2023 12:23 AM

R20 The play is a total polemic. Her acting is not even drama school level.

by Anonymousreply 28April 24, 2023 12:32 AM

[quote] total polemic.

I'd rather sit on hard benches for 90 minutes being preached at by Flora Robson.

I streamed it on NT at Home over the weekend. They had removed it from the US platform so I used a VPN. After viewing, all I could think was, "damn glad I didn't pay $200+ to see THAT" I know myself enough to know that I would have been pissed to sit through it. Surprisingly, I heard that advance sales have been decent. Tedious, yes -but all will LEAP TO THEIR FEET at the end to celebrate that they just sat through 100 intermissionless minutes and now must pat themselves on the back, because...women.

by Anonymousreply 30April 24, 2023 12:47 AM

R30 your opinion doesn’t speak for others. Know this. Understand this. Grow up.

by Anonymousreply 31April 24, 2023 12:49 AM

She gets raped by a fellow lawyer at her law firm and he's found innocent.

Save yourself $200

by Anonymousreply 32April 24, 2023 12:55 AM

R31 = She Who Must be Obeyed!

by Anonymousreply 33April 24, 2023 12:55 AM

I saw the play in London and to be frank, her acting gave me me second hand embrassmemt. I was cringing from start to finish

by Anonymousreply 34April 24, 2023 12:58 AM

This is a $3,000,000 making intra-national enterprise based on the singular action of one 5 inch rag of human flesh.

by Anonymousreply 35April 24, 2023 12:58 AM

R34 you said you streamed it and now you’re saying you saw it in London. You also claim you work in the movie industry (you don’t).

by Anonymousreply 36April 24, 2023 12:59 AM

Does this English play attempt to portray the conflict between The Red and The Blue?

by Anonymousreply 37April 24, 2023 1:01 AM

R34 I streamed it. The guy who saw it is different. You seem obsessed with nobody commenting on what they saw, and their opinions.

by Anonymousreply 38April 24, 2023 1:03 AM

R38 ugh. Idk how many times we have to go through this or how many red tagged accounts it will take for you to get this. Switching accounts doesn’t change where you’re posting from. YOU posted both comments.

by Anonymousreply 39April 24, 2023 1:04 AM

Geoffrey Rush got some recompense for this woman's silly accusations.

But feminists around the world are taking the case from the courts to the theatre. And raking in the money!

by Anonymousreply 40April 24, 2023 1:08 AM

by Anonymousreply 41April 24, 2023 1:16 AM

[quote]I wonder if they will change any of the dialogue from the London production now that it’s in NY.

No dialogue.

It's a monologue, a dirge, a peroration, a rant.

by Anonymousreply 42April 24, 2023 1:23 AM

R41 but I’m not. Your behavior is out of control again.

by Anonymousreply 43April 24, 2023 1:24 AM

Girls. Girls!

You are bringing discredit to your sex!

by Anonymousreply 44April 24, 2023 1:31 AM

R39, R43, no jmhe didn't. I posted that I saw it in London. Jodie' s acting is trash and the play is shit I got second hand embarrassment from watching her

by Anonymousreply 45April 24, 2023 1:44 AM

[quote] the play is shit

It's not a play.

A stand-up rant is not a play

by Anonymousreply 46April 24, 2023 1:47 AM

R45 A. You didn’t see it in London. You’re broke. You’re also uneducated and still living off your mother, who is on welfare.

B. You think you’re slick when you aren’t. Muriel knows every account you have. As do I.

by Anonymousreply 47April 24, 2023 1:54 AM

Dear Gentle Reader,

r47is having a bad day. Undoubtedly due to the fraught demands of excessive mincing and prancing encompassed with a high level of pedantry.

We hope that you will understand.

by Anonymousreply 48April 24, 2023 2:34 AM

R48 nope. Just over your lies. Good job at writing to Muriel too 💀

by Anonymousreply 49April 24, 2023 2:38 AM

I didn't pay good money to see 'The Crucible' because I was told it was an angry protest play without artistry or entertainment value.

I assume this current offering is the same.

by Anonymousreply 50April 24, 2023 2:52 AM

This thread is bonkers.

by Anonymousreply 52April 25, 2023 1:11 AM

The play is NOT about #metoo. It is very specifically about the way the courts treat rape. The rape in the play does not involve a power imbalance and is relatively violent.

The final long speech is certainly polemical, and the rest of the play is very much written to take us to that end, but is not itself polemical. It's just that the direction and Comer's performance, which put this fake rhythm into the monologue and a lot of fake energy and movement on the stage (as noted by the NYT critic), make it seem much preachier than it is. The Australian production, which was far less consciously theatrical, did much better with the material.

by Anonymousreply 53April 25, 2023 3:57 PM

Elizabeth Montgomery did it better on tv in A Case of Rape.

by Anonymousreply 54April 25, 2023 5:05 PM

Was it really rape, rape?

by Anonymousreply 55April 25, 2023 10:42 PM

Was it "verbal rape"?

Was it "emotional rape"?

Was it "digital rape"?

Was it "olfactory rape"?

by Anonymousreply 56April 25, 2023 10:51 PM

This chick and her play are both overrated
