I have never bought Joan Allen as a great actor. I think she received great reviews because she has those severe WASPy good looks that people confuse with class.

💯 re: Gena Rowlands, R6. She has the same energy and odd affect in her '60s TV appearances in shows like [italic]Laramie,[/italic] her "artsy" films directed by her husband, John Cassavetes, down to vehicles like [italic]Something to Talk About.[/italic]
I just don't get the acclaim.

I like Kathy Bates, but her acting is often community-theater level. In some roles she has been awesome. Very good as the mother in that Clint Eastwood movie about the falsely accused bomber (forget the name).

Al Pacino. The man has delivered the same, scene chewing, Italian New York white with a hint of gypsy or Puerto Rican, for the past 20 yrs.

Pacino destroys the scenery in Glengary Glenn Ross, but it sort of works there simply because it fits with the tone of the movie - where a lot (though not all) of the characters are chewing the scenery and the whole thing is on 10. But even then, Pacino sometimes over does it. "Paaaatel? ...." Spacey was so great putting the knife in Lemon at the end.

I can’t believe no one has yet mentioned Meryl Streep. She’s obviously a competent actor but one could make a convincing argument that she’s overrated, as many consider her the greatest female film actor of all time. (And many don’t.)

R79, she is a critics' darling, isn't she? Speaking from the peanut gallery, I find her pedestrian. Her Countess Olenski in Scorcese's Age of Innocence was flat and uninspired. She was fine in Married to the Mob, pleasant in Frankie and Johnny, and good in other movies, but never as first-rate as she has been touted. She has a likeable off-screen personality that, with her beauty, seems to drive a lot of the praise she gets. Maybe I just need to see her in other pictures, however. Open to recommendations.

Maurice Benard of General Hospital and his choppy, sputtering, cue card reading delivery. Should have retired years ago. That 80-year-old mustachioed guy on Y&R does a better job reading his cue cards.
George Clooney and his bobbing head and wide-eyed mugging for the camera.
Julia Roberts and her horse laugh.
