The Exorcist is on TV

I'd forgotten how silly it was. I remember standing in line in Westwood (SoCal) back when it opened. The damn line went around the block twice. It didn't scare or upset me but then I've been non-religious since about 5 or 6 years old.

What was your reaction to this film?

Thankfully my parents didn't take me to see it since I was too young, although I was bereft at the time because the neighbor kids had seen it and told me all about it. We used to act out the movie in their back yard, which upset their grandparents terribly. They would yell at their daughter, "Your kids are playing The Exorcist again!"

Here's how America reacted at the time.

My daddy went to see it in the theatre with his BIL and said he was completely pale with shock afterwards, and they didn't speak at all when they went for a drink afterwards. Granted, he was from a small village here in Europe and as such was not prepared for the twisted nightmares being concocted in the New World.

I was terrified at the time. I watched it tonight on TCM and wasn't as terrified. In fact, I wasn't really moved. Now it's just too old.

I've always been an atheist (after watching Madalyn O'Hair on Phil Donahue's show when I was about 12) but nevertheless - the Exorcist scared the hell out of me. I slept on the floor that night! (I was 17 or 18 and saw it at the cinema when it first came out)

Linda Blair was underrated in The Exorcist

I remember reading Ellen Burstyn's bio and she credits Blair with giving such a great performance for a kid her age.

The revelation that Mercedes McCambridge did the voice and a body double some of the other scenes ruined her Oscar momentum (she had won the Golden Globe as Best Supporting Actress)

I thought she was really quite powerful in the early scenes before they start dubbing her and even then her facial expressions and all are really impressive.

The devil's amplified voice when seeing the movie in a darkened theater sounded way different than when watching it on a TV.

But that's like saying Marion Crane's murder in the shower was scarier the first time around.

Having said that, no I wasn't as scared watching The Exorcist as others were in the theater.

But there was a visceral creepiness about the movie that was unlike anything I had ever seen before.
