Did people in the past swing their arms more as they walked?

Watching old street footage from the early-to-mid twentieth century, it seems people swung their arms far more dramatically when walking than they do now. Initially, I thought this was due to footage being 'sped-up', like in the 1920s, but I've noticed this to be true of street scenes in the '60s and '70s as well. Was this considered a more elegant way of walking? I still see this in business men of varying ages, and also in the Asians. Can any of you eldergays weigh in?

It’s possible that people were more physical, back then. They weren’t sitting, looking at screens so much - or walking, looking at a phone.

by Anonymousreply 3April 22, 2023 11:34 PM

People literally don't know how to walk anymore.

Came to post what r2 did.

Good job, r2.

by Anonymousreply 5April 22, 2023 11:37 PM

This is a very profound and deep question. I am shocked it has never been asked before.

by Anonymousreply 6April 22, 2023 11:44 PM

Yes, it was considered elegant.

by Anonymousreply 7April 22, 2023 11:52 PM

“and also in the Asians”. Which Asians, OP? Please share your definition.

by Anonymousreply 8April 22, 2023 11:53 PM

Koreans and Chinese, r8.

by Anonymousreply 9April 23, 2023 12:04 AM

Of course!

R4 "literally"

by Anonymousreply 12April 23, 2023 12:08 AM

Well I remember in elementary school (in the 60s) they made a big deal of moving one's arms when walking, since it improves exercise. Helping with the circulation and heart rate, and working the muscles of the arm. There were very few private gyms. Fitness emphasized walking, gymnastics, sports, swimming and running.

*I forgot calisthenics. We did a ton of calisthenics.

Arm swinging is integral to the human gait:

Too many people on sidewalks now, reducing us all to Geisha Kimono walking!

by Anonymousreply 16April 23, 2023 12:22 AM

Equivalent to manspreading. A no no, like reclining your airplane seat.

by Anonymousreply 17April 25, 2023 6:14 PM

I had a friend comment that I swung my arms too much....now I am very aware of how far they go. That was maybe 10 years ago...

by Anonymousreply 18April 25, 2023 6:18 PM

r16 gave me my first real laugh of the day

by Anonymousreply 19April 25, 2023 6:21 PM

I think the answer is obvious:

Millennials have clearly ruined walking too!

Damn them!!!

by Anonymousreply 20April 25, 2023 6:28 PM

And it's threads like this that keep me coming back to DL daily! Thanks, OP!

by Anonymousreply 21April 25, 2023 6:50 PM

R18 Is your friend a cranky control freak?

by Anonymousreply 22April 25, 2023 6:50 PM

It just appears they are because they were all 5 feet tall with rickets, scurvy and the vapors.

by Anonymousreply 23April 25, 2023 6:52 PM

R22, not really. I think I am more of a control freak over him. Maybe it is an east coast vs west coast thing.

by Anonymousreply 24April 25, 2023 7:17 PM

I don't know how elegant it is, but I learned in Physical Therapy that swinging your arms while you walk - which I was encouraged to do - helps with balance as people age, or, as in my case, have mobility issues.

For whatever that is worth...

by Anonymousreply 25April 25, 2023 7:23 PM

I just can't remember!

by Anonymousreply 26April 25, 2023 7:30 PM

I am always carrying something in one or both arms. How the fk am I supposed to flail them about like a chimp in a troop? I vote for discretionary arm swinging, as required.

by Anonymousreply 27April 25, 2023 7:37 PM

In the way, way back we swung our arms to avoid knuckle burns.

by Anonymousreply 28April 25, 2023 8:37 PM

Bump

by Anonymousreply 29April 25, 2023 11:21 PM

Aggressive arm swinging while walking in cities can lead to lawsuits or accusations of unwanted touching. It's easy to accidently touch someone's crotch while swinging the hand back.

by Anonymousreply 30April 25, 2023 11:27 PM

I think it has something to do with the hold military culture had over the northern hemisphere in those days. Schools were run much more like quasi boot camps, conscription was a thing. It was not uncommon for a school teacher to 'march' their students entering in and out of the school, single file walking, etc,.

by Anonymousreply 31April 25, 2023 11:29 PM

A straight friend mentioned that gay guys swing their arms. Sat on a bench on Hudson Street in the West Village for a half-hour. He's right.

by Anonymousreply 32April 25, 2023 11:30 PM

You wish, OP

by Anonymousreply 33April 25, 2023 11:30 PM

People really do have ghastly gaits these days.

by Anonymousreply 34April 25, 2023 11:58 PM

You’re welcome.

It's harder for fat whores to swing their arms more today.

Their side boobs and moobage get in the way.

by Anonymousreply 36April 26, 2023 12:21 AM

I noticed a lot of asians either have immaculate walking style or they're very sloppy and kick their knees up as they walk.

by Anonymousreply 37April 26, 2023 1:05 AM

Exactly! Leo's not gay, he's just... old-fashioned.

Yeah and it's because they weren't all hepped up on the Tweeting and the Faceplace and the TikenFlea and all that mess. They weren't all caught up in the wokesters and that Tranny whatnot. I'll tell you what.

R39 LMAO Hurr Durr LOL WTF so cringe IKR? 💩 👀

by Anonymousreply 40April 26, 2023 3:33 AM

When I watch those old videos, a lot of men walk with their hand in their pockets, which I find rare today.

by Anonymousreply 41April 26, 2023 3:49 AM

Lots of pocket pool happened in the old tymes.

by Anonymousreply 42April 26, 2023 5:23 AM

Raquel Welch was fired from Scarsdale Surprise for not moving her arms when she tap danced.

by Anonymousreply 43April 26, 2023 8:24 AM

THat's why it was called the Swing Era.

[quote]Did people in the past swing their arms more as they walked?

Just the cute ones.

by Anonymousreply 45April 26, 2023 12:42 PM

There is a solution if swinging arms bother you, OP, and you're afraid it's catching.
