OUTRAGEOUS BEHAVIOR: Don't sprinkle my cake and tell me its frosting

I hope the Millennial baker has a 'safe space' in her bakery where she can go and cry. How dare this customer insult her 'creativity'.

I say the bakery closes by the end of summer.

by Anonymousreply 1April 22, 2023 1:09 AM

When my nieces were in elementary school they baked a Funfetti cake for me that looked better than that.

by Anonymousreply 2April 22, 2023 1:23 AM

I'd eat that ugly cak just to make it disappear.

by Anonymousreply 3April 22, 2023 1:32 AM

It's quite artless. I think only a hipster clientele looking for irony and meta would find it worth the cost.

by Anonymousreply 4April 22, 2023 1:36 AM

The hipster clientele would find it worth the cost, but never pay $84 for it. But they will go in her bakery and offer support by buying one cup of coffee and sitting at a table all day, using the free wifi.

by Anonymousreply 5April 22, 2023 1:46 AM

monied hipster.

But that's not who she is nor her clientele. Just a hack and rip off.

by Anonymousreply 6April 22, 2023 1:49 AM

That cake needs to be left out in the rain.

Also - Trilby? JFC.

by Anonymousreply 7April 22, 2023 1:52 AM

Two years ago in LA, I spent $70 on a special custom made birthday cake for my mother's 75 birthday. $84 is not excessive for custom, but this one looks shitty.

by Anonymousreply 8April 22, 2023 2:01 AM

Bitter frau met her match. Don't mess with Trilby's little girl!

by Anonymousreply 9April 22, 2023 2:05 AM

R8 I, too , have spent $70 and up for a specialty cake for different occasions I was hosting. I can't complain about any of them - worth every penny.

However, this looks like it was an art project for second graders. The cake looks atrocious.

Kylie Kakes Facebook page has become a war zone between her 'friends' (who masquerade as her customers / supporters) and those who are against her (masquerading as 'former customers' and 'interested customers'). Yesterday she posted a photo of rainbow-sprinkled cupcakes in her bakery, 'free for the taking' (if you ordered one of the $74 specialty cakes first). Sorry to say, the cupcakes looked like garbage. She also shared other 'decorated' birthday cakes she did this past week - the writing on the cake looked like a fifth grader practicing cursive writing did it.

No one is wishing her ill will for herself or her bakery (as far as I could tell). She's posting all these photos of her creations, encouraging people to buy them / order their own, so they face criticism - whether good or bad. People are stating facts of what they see - none of her cakes posted thus far look like something you would pay $74. And everyone is calling out the fact that SHE started the public feud with her customer - not the other way around.

by Anonymousreply 10April 22, 2023 2:42 PM

Nobody explained to Kylie that the gold stars she got in 5th grade art class were for attendance, not talent.

by Anonymousreply 11April 22, 2023 2:44 PM

The shelves in Kylie's bakery are lined with "Participation Trophies" for at least trying to run a bakery business.

by Anonymousreply 12April 22, 2023 2:53 PM

You want a really good cake people can actually eat and enjoy and it looks good, there's only t wo places I go:Publix Bakery and Costco.

by Anonymousreply 13April 22, 2023 3:01 PM

Never tasted a cake worth $84.

by Anonymousreply 14April 22, 2023 3:08 PM

Some FB-posters are insisting she uses boxed cake mixes for her cakes - she doesn't even bake from scratch. Don't know if it is true, but I certainly wouldn't doubt it.

by Anonymousreply 15April 22, 2023 3:12 PM

I’m surprised that a bakery in WV can charge $84 for a cake. Doesn’t all their disposable income go for meth?

by Anonymousreply 16April 22, 2023 3:13 PM

Kylie looks like River Phoenix when he was 'Leaf'.

by Anonymousreply 18April 22, 2023 3:28 PM

by Anonymousreply 19April 22, 2023 3:28 PM

^^^sorry, the name Trilby.

by Anonymousreply 20April 22, 2023 3:29 PM

by Anonymousreply 21April 22, 2023 3:31 PM

by Anonymousreply 22April 22, 2023 3:33 PM

by Anonymousreply 23April 22, 2023 3:33 PM

Not to mention poor Kylie Cakes.

R20

Trilby is a novel by George du Maurier and one of the most popular novels of its time. Published serially in Harper's Monthly from January to August 1894, it was published in book form on 8 September 1895 and sold 200,000 copies in the United States alone.[1] Trilby is set in the 1850s in an idyllic bohemian Paris. Though Trilby features the stories of two English artists and a Scottish artist, one of the most memorable characters is Svengali, a rogue, masterful musician and hypnotist.

Trilby O'Ferrall, the novel's heroine, is a half-Irish girl working in Paris as an artist's model and laundress; all the men in the novel are in love with her. The relationship between Trilby and Svengali forms only a small, though crucial, portion of the novel, which is mainly an evocation of a milieu.

Lucy Sante wrote that the novel had a "decisive influence on the stereotypical notion of bohemia" and that it "affected the habits of American youth, particularly young women, who derived from it the courage to call themselves artists and 'bachelor girls,' to smoke cigarettes and drink Chianti."[2]

The novel has been adapted to the stage several times; one of these featured the lead actress wearing a distinctive short-brimmed hat with a sharp snap to the back of the brim. The hat became known as the trilby and went on to become a popular men's clothing item in the United Kingdom throughout various parts of the 20th century, before enjoying a revival as a unisex clothing item in the United States in the 2000s.

“Doctored” boxed cake mixes are fine. You can regulate the density of the cake easily by adding extra ingredients to a name brand box mix, depending on whether it’ll be carved, covered in fondant, etc., and the cakes taste really good and not “boxy”.

Having baked and decorated all kinds of cakes as a hobby for the last 20 years, and as a human being with a pair of working eyeballs, I can tell you that the original cake really sucked, aesthetically. I’d be irritated. But not enough to take it to social media. Because I’m an adult. Instead, tell the baker what was wrong with it, and tell her you won’t be using her services again. Then explain to your mom what happened, she’ll eat the cake, you’ll eat the cake, like fat whores do, and you move on. It’ll be a turd in 24 hrs anyway. The end.

by Anonymousreply 28April 22, 2023 5:16 PM

Australian fairy bread made by first graders looks better than that cake.

by Anonymousreply 29April 22, 2023 5:19 PM

I'm not a sprinkles aficionado.

by Anonymousreply 30April 22, 2023 5:29 PM

[R28] The customer did exactly what you suggest - she took her complaint PRIVATELY to the owner, and asked her to make it right (I think she wanted it decorated more professionally, not as amateurish as the baker presented it to her). A relatively easy fix for a $74 cake and new customer. The baker refused.

THE BAKER - not the customer - then took it to social media and told the world what a horrible customer experience she had to deal with that day. She could have kept the experience to herself, but no - she had to go public with it and it went viral. Once the customer saw it, she decided to go on social media with her side of the story - but then realized it would harm the bakery in the long run, so she took hers down. She also asked the bakery to take her post down, too, which I think she did at first, but then reposted.

So don't blame the customer on this one - it's the MILLENNIAL BAKER with her hurt feelings.

by Anonymousreply 31April 22, 2023 5:46 PM

Geez, those cakes look pathetic. I can't bake and could do better after watching a couple youtube videos.

Seriously, charging $84 for that cake is laughable.

by Anonymousreply 32April 22, 2023 6:13 PM

Miranda balked at paying $75 for a cake back in the 1990s, got her a Betty Crocker mix and tub of frosting and had at it! Lol. But honestly, while obviously there are fantastic tasting, fresh, well-made cakes. For most uses of cake - from kids birthday parties to emotional eating, a bullshit mix cake or cheap store bought one will suffice.

by Anonymousreply 33April 22, 2023 6:18 PM

Shouldn't it be cak?

by Anonymousreply 34April 22, 2023 6:35 PM

PLEASE STOP TALKING ABOUT THAT CAAAAAAAAAAAKE!

by Anonymousreply 35April 22, 2023 6:35 PM

Only if you're dum, r34.

by Anonymousreply 36April 22, 2023 6:36 PM

I love how the customer made her own version of the cake under the nom de plume Petty Crocker and the result was 10x better looking than what the “professional “ baker produced.

by Anonymousreply 37April 22, 2023 6:44 PM

R31: So close. Except the customer escalated the whole thing on Facebook before the “baker” then took it to TikTok. My point stands. Don’t escalate petty shit. It’s pointless - primarily when you’re dealing with an individual or small business. And especially when it’s in West Virginia where feuding is the official state sport.

by Anonymousreply 38April 22, 2023 7:46 PM

Why would you order an $84 cake without doing the slightest bit of research on the baker?

by Anonymousreply 39April 22, 2023 7:56 PM

[quote] You want a really good cake people can actually eat and enjoy and it looks good, there's only t wo places I go:Publix Bakery and Costco.

Depends where you live. I live in a small town, but there's a small bakery here that could probably do a really nice cake that people would enjoy.

The hand lettering on that cake was unprofessional-looking.

by Anonymousreply 40April 22, 2023 8:07 PM

Eat your cake, Trilby.

by Anonymousreply 41April 22, 2023 8:08 PM

[quote] Instead, tell the baker what was wrong with it, and tell her you won’t be using her services again.

I wouldn't even bother, if I never planned to buy cakes there, again.

by Anonymousreply 42April 22, 2023 8:09 PM

I seriously doubt suburban Karen has ever heard of the novel.

by Anonymousreply 43April 22, 2023 8:39 PM

Even if you're using boxed cake mixes they require 4 eggs and there is an egg shortage and eggs have become expensive. I'm not justifying $84 but things just cost more. And honestly, I use box cakes all the time. I doctorI used 4 eggs, melted butter, whole milk and instant pudding and they always come out wonderfully. I do make my own frosting or a glaze and I usually do bundt cakes. But if this baker is using a boxed cake mix I certainly don't find it a strike against her. But $84 is rather steep. I think her presentation is sloppy and for something like this cake I'd never charge more than $50. And you'd still make a profit.

by Anonymousreply 44April 22, 2023 8:49 PM

But why use a boxed mix? If she is a baker she must have all baking ingredients. No?

by Anonymousreply 45April 22, 2023 9:11 PM

Ive watched some of this unfold... the customer did not take it to Facebook first. The customer contacted the "baker," privately, and the Baker was unhinged in the back and forth messages. The Baker did escalate the situation by going on social media and talking about the client as being the "worst client experience she has ever had.

The "Baker," then doubled down when others criticized her by insulting the looks and lives of the people who would dare tell her she was in the wrong.

Additionally, the "Baker," claimed that she could charge the prices she could because she didn't use cheap ass ingredients like Sam's club... yet people quickly found out, from her own videos, that she was using boxed cake mixes (she had stacks of them under a counter), margarine for her buttercream, and all the ingredients were Great Value (by Walmart, which owns Sam's Club).

It then came out that the photos she was using to advertise for her business were not even her own cakes. She had lifted them from other Bakeries, not even bothering to remove the watermarks on the photos. She later claims everyone knew that those photos were "Inspiration photos." Still bullshit because you cannot use someone else's work to advertise without their consent.

This baker reminds me of Amy from the infamous Amy's Baking Company episode of Kitchen Nightmares.

Also, no matter what anyone says, I don't think there is no doctoring a boxed cake mix... no matter what you do to it, it always still has that chemical taste to it.

by Anonymousreply 46April 22, 2023 9:26 PM

R46: You’re riding this wave of pettiness as if you’re from West Virginia. Are you from West Virginia?

by Anonymousreply 47April 22, 2023 9:36 PM

'Petty Crocker'! I love it. Team Trilby Spawn.

by Anonymousreply 48April 22, 2023 9:44 PM

by Anonymousreply 49April 22, 2023 10:19 PM

by Anonymousreply 50April 22, 2023 10:27 PM

[quote]Are you from West Virginia?

Almost heaven, R47. Same thing.

by Anonymousreply 51April 22, 2023 10:38 PM

An attention span of more than 2 minutes is a wondrous thing.

by Anonymousreply 52April 22, 2023 10:39 PM

R46 omg I was going to say the same thing that it reminds me of that crazy Amy lady.

by Anonymousreply 53April 23, 2023 12:09 AM

R45, if you go to Costco or to Sam's Club any of the big box stores, you will see commercial sizes of a lot of the things we thought were made from scratch. It's all about convenience and economy. And time. It takes time to measure and weigh all the ingredients, and if they're already measured, weighed and added to the mix, why bother. It really doesn't make much difference. And it's cheaper in the long run. I'm sure a really good baker or chef puts their own spin on whatever they create to make it their own.

by Anonymousreply 54April 23, 2023 12:39 AM

I'm sorry you live in such an impoverished culture R54. I realise it's spreading around the world but this is why people get so fat in the USA. If everything is complete industrial garbage.

by Anonymousreply 55April 23, 2023 12:51 AM

But beautifully-made-with-fresh-ingredients cake is just sugary shit too. Maybe less chemicals and preservatives but it will make you fat. Cake is an odd food to call out for being processed industrial garbage when the non processed kind is also shitty for your health.

by Anonymousreply 56April 23, 2023 1:00 AM

Nice one R41.

by Anonymousreply 57April 23, 2023 1:10 AM

Not really. People have eaten cake for a 100 years. Not they eat it too often and it is industrial garbage. But if you go but a cake made from whole ingredients its not bad. The sugar is refined. But it doesn't have to be. And the flour can be quality. Eggs butter and milk are not unhealthy.

A lot of stuff is still made from scratch in local bakeries, pastries, pies , etc. Cakes, your basic yellow cake or a chocolate cake are not "industrial chemical garbage." I make my own cakes from scratch, but I do it infrequently and when I do make one it's fun. I take my time and enjoy it.

by Anonymousreply 60April 23, 2023 2:40 AM

by Anonymousreply 67April 23, 2023 5:41 AM

r67 I think you're right about the mistake. I'm thinking they forgot to leave a space open for the writing when they added the sprinkles. They sprinkles were supposed to go on after the writing and they didn't want to admit their mistake.

*The sprinkles

by Anonymousreply 69April 23, 2023 5:51 AM

I must be easily impressed I’m perfectly happy with a grocery store cake or an ice cream cake. I’d never feel the need to spend more than $40 on a cake.

by Anonymousreply 70April 23, 2023 5:56 AM

No, R68, it wasn't a mistake. She talks about how that's how she does ALL her cakes. And if you look at the photos of her other cakes, the one's she's actually done, you'll see that's just the level of cake decorating she's at.

by Anonymousreply 73April 23, 2023 7:53 AM

My complaint is that it seems like all the so-called bakers I see on You Tube or Insta, very very few of them give a damn about the cake. They are consumed with the decorating. Mountains of frosting and all kinds of piping and flowers and sprinkles and glittery shit and there's barely any cake. Ina and Martha still know how to bake a cake. So does that PReppy Chef guy on You Tube, but for the rest, they're a mess. As I get older, I prefer pound cake, and maybe I put some fresh fruit and whipped cream on it. Or not.

by Anonymousreply 74April 23, 2023 12:59 PM

R74 I'm all about the cake too. Has to be moist and flavorful. If there is icing I like a thin layer and that should be more buttery than sugary. Some cakes are dry and have 5 inches of sickenenly sweet icing. Cupcakes are like this now. Yuck.

by Anonymousreply 75April 23, 2023 2:07 PM

Ugh, I LOVE a store-bought bakery cake.

by Anonymousreply 76April 23, 2023 2:14 PM

I think she needs to take some classes in cake decorating by a professional decorator. You can tell this is self-taught, and it looks like shit. It doesn't look like an $84 cake.

by Anonymousreply 77April 23, 2023 3:19 PM

R77 the most hilarious thing is that she teaches cake decorating herself. People pay her to teach them how to make things look as awful as she does.

by Anonymousreply 78April 23, 2023 6:48 PM

I wonder if she has done any wedding cakes in her bakery ? I'd hate to see what those look like, and what she charges for them.

by Anonymousreply 79April 23, 2023 7:07 PM

by Anonymousreply 85April 24, 2023 2:19 AM

by Anonymousreply 86April 24, 2023 3:11 AM

She’s in West Virginia. The sprinkles probably contain fentanyl, which explains the outrageous price.

by Anonymousreply 87April 24, 2023 3:41 AM

R86 that appears doubtful. According to bakers who have watched the video and discussed it, 1) she's using boxed cake mix and 2) by dissecting the crumb of her sliced cake, they all say the cake is dry and overbaked.

by Anonymousreply 88April 24, 2023 5:01 AM

[quote]But why use a boxed mix?

I agree. Box mixes also really don’t save any time. It’s just a couple more ingredients. But you can always tell when they’ve used a mix as the base because of the nasty chemical taste.

by Anonymousreply 90April 24, 2023 6:04 AM

What kills me is she’s absolutely shameless. She has zero talent and she posts about her cakes like she’s one of the best in the industry.

R94 That's how she decorates her face - just like her cakes. Everything is a bit "off".

by Anonymousreply 96April 25, 2023 3:42 PM

And it continues. This Kylie person is something else.

She's doing the interview circuit and on a recent podcast claimed that she also makes money giving advice to other business owners and her advice for them would be if they were in this situation they should address it by apologizing. She goes on to say she absolutely, 100% knows, that people want her to make a public apology and she wants them to know that is 100% not going to ever happen.

The person interviewing her asked her what her reasons would be for not apologizing, especially since she just said she would advise her "clients," they should. I don't think she answered the question.
