Rosie O'Donnell says she had to 'argue and defend basic principles of humanity and kindness' on The View

Rosie O'Donnell still has complicated feelings about her time on The View, particularly as it relates to conservative cohost Elisabeth Hasselbeck and what the comedian alleges was special treatment from former producer Bill Geddie.

Appearing on Tuesday's episode of the Now What? With Brooke Shields podcast, O'Donnell (who first co-hosted The View from 2006 through to 2007, the year she and Hasselbeck had a memorable blow-up live on air) said she first approached the show with a "teamwork attitude," but Hasselbeck and Geddie's partnership rubbed her the wrong way.

"Elisabeth Hasselbeck was on there and Bill Geddie was the producer of an all-woman talk show and supposedly a woman's voice was a man, an old, cis, white man Republican who was against everything that I believed in and stood for, and he loved Elisabeth Hasselbeck, and would go into her little dressing room and give her notes and talking points of the Republican press that they'd release daily. She had the talking points," O'Donnell told Shields. "I was trying to get her to feel more than to fact, I'm like, 'But what do you feel about this?' I tried. Here's what I did. When I took the job, I said to myself, I'm going to love her no matter what. I took her to her first Broadway show, I took her kids to see the Nickelodeon shows with me and my kids, I had her to my house."

O'Donnell said she thought the pair were close friends "in a civil kind of way," until they had a major clash on the May 23, 2007 episode.

"One day on the show she kind of threw me under the bus and I was like, 'Are you f---ing kidding me?' I finished the show, got my coat, walked out, and said I'm not going back, and I didn't, until a few years later when they asked me to come back and Whoopi [Goldberg] was on it and we clashed in ways that I was shocked by," O'Donnell noted, though she later returned to co-host the program once again from 2014 to 2015, following Geddie's departure that same year.

"I had produced my own show. I was the solo boss, and here I was not having any power to make decisions. There would be the Rory Kennedy documentary about Abu Ghraib was out about the torture that we did as a country, how we sanctioned it. And Bill Geddie wanted to do the new fall lipstick colors. And I'm like, 'We're not going to talk?' And then, you know, Bill Cosby was a big topic and I wanted to discuss Bill Cosby [and the rape allegations against him] and Whoopi did not," she said about her eventual, short-lived return.

When Shields asked O'Donnell if she regretted going on The View, the actress said she didn't, but didn't mince words when she assessed her place on the program.

"I know this, it's not the best use of my talent to get in a show where I have to argue and defend basic principles of humanity and kindness. It was not something I'd ever do again," she continued before explaining that she maintained a healthy relationship with show creator, the late Barbara Walters, even after she departed the series. "Barbara and I got along after, we went out to dinner, we knew each other way before I did that show, before she asked me to do it, and we remained friendly toward the end. I forgave her, because she was older and did the best that she could with what she had to work with, but it's nothing I'd want to do again, I can say that."

EW has reached out to representatives for The View, Hasselbeck, and to Geddie directly for comment.

The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET on ABC. Listen to O'Donnell discuss her time on the show on Shields' podcast above.

"basic principles of humanity and kindness"?

You mean, like telling a staffer at her magazine whom she knew was a cancer survivor that liars gat cancer?? That was was really humane and kind.

or how about telling the world her daughter who had run away was mentally challenged?

She is full of bullshit and a horrible human being.

by Anonymousreply 1April 19, 2023 12:00 AM

Was her obsession with Tom Cruise just for show? She sure did crush on him hard for a gay woman. She was always going to be at odds with the other women on the show, it's part of her shtick. She likes to be contrary. I do think she sticks to her guns impressively well, although she is obdurate in the extreme. She's an acquired taste, although personally I like her.

by Anonymousreply 2April 19, 2023 12:00 AM

[quote] kindness

A creepy, wet word.

by Anonymousreply 3April 19, 2023 12:06 AM

I know someone who went to school with Elizabeth. She is and has always been a complete cunt!

And it wasn't about jealousy, this girl is a gorgeous Lez and came from a much better and richer, well adjusted family.

Slow news day, OP? EW to the rescue!

Hmmm.

Hasslebitch was and still is, a bloody moron. An empty vessel and a big fake too.

While not as annoying as My Father Me Again, she's almost as excruciating.

by Anonymousreply 8April 19, 2023 12:47 AM

Great contribution, R7

by Anonymousreply 9April 19, 2023 12:48 AM

R5 the comments are killing me. Especially this one

[quote] Beautiful AND talented actress. Rare combination.

by Anonymousreply 10April 19, 2023 12:54 AM

Move on Rosie. It's been almost 20 years.

by Anonymousreply 11April 19, 2023 12:54 AM

Next week: How they straightwashed my butch Betty Rubble!

by Anonymousreply 12April 19, 2023 2:17 AM

Yes, of course her Tom Cruise "obsession" or whatever was fake. She was in the closet and trying to appear straight. I saw an interview she did with Travolta (in the '90s or so) and they're "flirting," talking about how if Tom Cruise is not available, Travolta is next in line for Rosie to have a crush on.

Tom Cruise and Travolta are not the most straight-appearing men. So, I think Rosie subconsciously (or consciously) felt comfortable choosing them to have a crush on.

by Anonymousreply 13April 19, 2023 2:39 AM

I'd like to hear Rosie rehash stuff from 20 years ago. She's one of the few who might name names and tell some interesting stories about them.

by Anonymousreply 14April 19, 2023 2:40 AM

Hasbian

by Anonymousreply 15April 19, 2023 3:17 AM

She's right though - every Republican woman on these chat shows does not go out there with an open mind to discuss topics. They come armed with talking points and pivot to ad hominem attacks on Democrats when they can't defend their positions anymore.

The Republicans USE liberals sense of fairness and kindness against them. Over and over and over again.

There is not one single virtuous or trustworthy Republican in this entire US. None.

by Anonymousreply 16April 19, 2023 3:26 AM

The newest Republican on the panel is perfectly reasonable and fits in very well.

by Anonymousreply 17April 19, 2023 3:32 AM

I think we've agreed that they're all CUNTS.

by Anonymousreply 18April 19, 2023 3:48 AM

[quote]Was her obsession with Tom Cruise just for show? She sure did crush on him hard for a gay woman.

I think people can have non-sexual crushes in which they fixate on someone because that person is cute or talented or has some other appealing quality. Although given that Cruise increasingly resembles an ageing lesbian maybe there's something else going on.

by Anonymousreply 19April 19, 2023 3:49 AM

[quote] a man, an old, cis, white man Republican

Notice how man, old, cis and white are all lumped together with Republican indicating that all the demons of Hell have converged upon Earth.

by Anonymousreply 20April 19, 2023 3:51 AM

Ching chang chong?

by Anonymousreply 21April 19, 2023 3:52 AM

The simplest explanation is that Rosie said she had a crush on Tom Cruise because she didn't want her viewers to suspect she was a lesbian

by Anonymousreply 22April 19, 2023 3:54 AM

Rosie has been messy at times, but I like her. I don't get the vicious hatred some have for her. She's an ally, she's outspoken and she really does seem to operate from a place of kindness as best she knows how.

by Anonymousreply 23April 19, 2023 3:55 AM

And equally I don't get the simpering dog-like gratitude some have for her. She's mean, she lies, she's racist, and she's not funny.

by Anonymousreply 24April 19, 2023 3:58 AM

Fuck her. Every time she speaks, the world gets a little dumber, nastier, and more bitter.

by Anonymousreply 25April 19, 2023 4:38 AM

R25 in contrast to your uplifting, warm-hearted and witty interjections.

by Anonymousreply 26April 19, 2023 11:40 AM

Zero interest since she kissed misogynist Dylan’s ass

by Anonymousreply 27April 19, 2023 12:14 PM

I love Rosie, but she's not sharing anything new or groundbreaking. We already know that Geddie treated Hasslebeck like a Fox News bimbo (feeding her the latest right wing talking points) and Hasslebeck being ok with her role on the show. Rosie is a boss lady bitch who likes to be in charge. She thought she could be a team player, but she didn't like Geddie and she didn't like how Hasslebeck let Geddie treat her like a mouthpiece puppet without independent thought. She got emotionally and physically involved, and that cost her an easy gig and a paycheck that could've kept coming with her phoning it in day after day. But then, that's not boss lady bitch Rosie.

by Anonymousreply 28April 19, 2023 12:18 PM

[quote][R25] in contrast to your uplifting, warm-hearted and witty interjections.

I don't have the national platform she does. I hope you can see the difference.

by Anonymousreply 29April 19, 2023 12:25 PM

Rosie O’Lesbo is and always has been a BULLY.

by Anonymousreply 30April 19, 2023 12:41 PM

I actually think Rosie’s account seems pretty accurate. I was sort of obsessed with her first run on The View and used to follow all of the vlogs and things she did at the time. Rosie and Elisabeth were very, very close. I even remember after Elisabeth went to the Bush White House for some late in term party, Rosie brought her onto her vlog and complimented how beautiful she looked at that event, and asked her all kinds of sincere questions about how much fun she had meeting Bush & Co.

It’s also hard to remember after the fallout and Trump and all that, but the show was really hot during her first stint. It was sort of at its best then and could have had a good run, if they could have kept it together (something Rosie doesn’t seem to be good at, personally or professionally).

by Anonymousreply 31April 19, 2023 12:53 PM

Ask her grown kids, her exes, and her former assistants how "kind" Rosie is.

by Anonymousreply 32April 19, 2023 2:30 PM

The very dumb Elizabeth Hasselbeck was Rosie's physical type. Rosie admitted to having a crush on her. Would she have invited her to her house if she had looked more like Ana Navaro or even Meghan McCain? Probably not.

by Anonymousreply 33April 19, 2023 4:02 PM

[quote] Translation: She was an overbearing bully who disliked and attacked anybody who had views which opposed hers.

So like the women on DL. If Rosie isn’t on DL, then she has a lot of clones here.

by Anonymousreply 34April 19, 2023 4:20 PM

The only Republican on that show that I liked was Nicole Wallace and look how she turned out. I knew there was a reason I liked her.

Rosie is just like everyone else with her own flaws. I thought she was okay.

by Anonymousreply 35April 19, 2023 4:43 PM

R23, to whom is she an ally exactly? Not women or kids considering Rosie's support of misogynist and child groomer Dylan Mulvaney.

To think Rosie was so holier-than-thou when she tried to make Kelly Ripa look like a homophobe just because she rightly objected to some man she met 2 minutes ago putting his hand over her mouth.

by Anonymousreply 36April 20, 2023 1:30 AM

Notice how Rosie keeps trashing Bill Geddie and Hasslebeck.

She also had plenty of problems with Whoopi when she was co-hosting with her in 2014-15. But she has never ever publicly gone into detail about it, or degraded Whoopi. Same with Oprah - where she had a short-lived show on her OWN, and then Oprah got rid of her.

Two strong Black women which Rosie had trouble with - yet Rosie doesn't say a word against them. Why is that ? What is she afraid of ?

by Anonymousreply 37April 20, 2023 5:46 PM

Bill Geddie is a nasty piece of work, very much a Log Cabin gay. He was Walters' right hand man for many years.

by Anonymousreply 38April 20, 2023 6:14 PM

Correction, Geddie isn't gay. Not sure where I got that idea.

by Anonymousreply 39April 20, 2023 6:15 PM

Bill Gedde was super close with Barbara who also was a Republican who didn't want to appear as such so that is why they got Hasselbeck. Her husband is a rabid MAGAT and fed her all of her talking points. Bill would coach Hasselbeck via her earpiece on talking points.

by Anonymousreply 40April 20, 2023 6:50 PM

I can't respect Rosie O'Lesbo after seeing her abysmal acting in this tv movie.

Although I have to admit it's SOO bad it's still BAD but funny because it's so bad.

You know you're dealing with an asshole when someone defends a celebrity as "an ally."

by Anonymousreply 42April 20, 2023 8:33 PM

It's unfair of Rosie to go off on Elisabeth Hasselbeck.

First, EH was a reality tv star, not a talk show host. Rosie had had her own talk show and was very experienced in the genre.

Second, EH was specifically brought in to be the voice of Conservative Republicans. Of course the producer was going to give her talking points because it was doubtful that EH could keep up otherwise. She doesn't seem the type to do any research. Her BFA from Boston College was in design.

Third, Rosie should understand that socializing with co-workers is not always a good thing. Maybe Rosie should have built her social life outside of work?

Fourth, tell me how the linked video is "kindness." I get it, Rosie was doing comedy, but she certainly didn't spare anybody's feelings. Maybe EH was Rosie's "chickens come home to roost" moment.

R43, I see Rosie has been unfunny for a long, long time. And the irony of her talking about Oprah's weight.

by Anonymousreply 44April 20, 2023 9:30 PM

When Rosie was doing her daytime show, she always said her crush on Cruise wasn’t sexual. She was happy to have him just come to her house and mow her lawn.

by Anonymousreply 45April 20, 2023 11:44 PM

Make mine roast beef, hold the mustard!

by Anonymousreply 46April 21, 2023 12:35 AM

r43 Do you know what actually happened? Rose and EH were friendly when she started. They even made a point of how the two people they expected to clash got on so well. What happened was Elizabeth was on a fox show after Rosie had made the comment that to the Iraqi people we are the terrorist, her point being we invaded their home, bombing their buildings, they could see us as the terrorists. She even made that point on the show. Of course, the conservative Fox bobbleheads ran with that. When asked about it Hasselbeck said nothing in support of Rosie. That is what started the argument. Rosie was pissed her friend didn't stand up for her and Hasselbeck claimed it was not her job to defend Rosie. Rosie fired back then you agree with what they said? Rosie was set up because they had a two-camera split screen pre-set for this. She was a producer on her show, she new that kind of split screen had to be set up ahead of time and not how they normally shot the show. That was when she said her famous like Big Bad Lesbian Rosie makes Poor little Elisabeth cry, this is what that is supposed to be.

by Anonymousreply 47April 21, 2023 2:39 AM

First, Walters was never a Republican. She had said in her memoir 'Audition' (2008) she came from a liberal family of Dems and she was a Dem herself.

Second, Rosie took issue with everyone whom she felt didn't "defend" her; including Hasslebeck and Walters on 'The View'. Hasslebeck and Walters had the same idea - if Rosie is going to make 'controversial statements', she needs to defend herself. She was an adult saying this - don't drag others into the fight. (Walters was not happy when Rosie asked her to defend her against Trump - she told Rosie it was 'her fight' with him, and not to get the show or network involved). I agree with them.

Rosie has no problem going after straight white people - Hasslebeck, Geddie, Walters, Ripa, Trump, etc,

She does have a problem going after gay men and women, as well as minority men and women.

According to Broadway gossip, she had a huge falling out with Boy George over the Broadway musical "Taboo" which was produced by Rosie and bombed on Broadway - causing her to lose a small fortune. She has blamed BG for the failure (forgot why) and has said he threw her under the bus to take the blame. Yet she has never given details or trashed BG in public as she has the ones mentioned above. She has kept rather low-key about that fiasco.

by Anonymousreply 48April 21, 2023 3:00 AM

r48 Rosie could not defend herself she was not on the show, and Elisabeth was. She sat there and said nothing. Nothing to defend her friend. She didn't have to, I agree, it was Rosie's statement but at the very least as a friend, EH could have said 'I don't think she meant it in the context you are taking it." But that is really not the point. Geddie knew this storm was coming and he set it up to exploit it on the show with the split screen of two camera shots of them going at each other. Barbra can say she was a Dem all she wants but look at her inner circle. Bill Geddie was her long-time producer - Right wing Magat. Cindy Adams her BFF for life, is a Right-wing Magat. Joan Rivers, her dear friend - Republican, Dionnne VON Furstenberg - Republican.

by Anonymousreply 49April 22, 2023 3:42 PM

R49 I'm a staunch liberal myself, but I don't have a social inner circle of celebs like Walters. However, two of my very closest female friends I have had for over 40 years are Republicans. They have been since the Reagan years (our first Presidential elections was in 1984). They each married Republicans, and their spouses are MAGAts. In the past 23 years (since Bush 43) I have respected their opinions, and they have respected mine. They tune in to FOX / Newsmax / OANN while I tune into everything but FOX / Newsmax / OANN. We have discussions - not arguements. We respect each others boundaries. Some of my family (cousins) who I am very close to are also Republicans / MAGAts - my relationships with them are the same as my two friends.

So, believe it or nor, it's possible to be a Democrat and have MAGAt friends, family, and business partners - but keep your liberal beliefs.

by Anonymousreply 50April 22, 2023 4:38 PM

The whole show is a fail. It never worked as a 'discussion of opposing viewpoints from ladies from all walks of life!' (the Megan years were particularly repugnant). No one wants to hear harpies arguing in daytime. It only works as politically-correct taskmistresses reprimanding naughty people in the news.

But in reality it's just an excuse for 25 minutes of pharamaceutical commercials.

by Anonymousreply 51April 22, 2023 5:39 PM

It's the most watched network daytime program on television, so I think it's a hit not a fail, R51.

by Anonymousreply 52April 22, 2023 5:48 PM

r50 your "friends" are voting away your rights. Nice friends.

by Anonymousreply 53April 22, 2023 7:06 PM

Rosie's problem is that she never learned how to disagree with someone respectfully. When confronted with someone who disagrees with her, she gets extremely overbearing and nasty. Combine that with her need for control, and you get a very mean bull-in-a-china-shop bull dyke.

by Anonymousreply 54April 22, 2023 7:41 PM

I like Rosie but tuned out at cis.

by Anonymousreply 55April 22, 2023 8:26 PM

Rosie feels threatened by older straight caucasian men and minority men (but especially caucasian) in power: Tom Selleck, Trump, Bill Geddie and Cosby. I think it stems from her 'daddy issues'.

Rosie feels she can bully young, straight women - such as Hasslebeck, Kardashians and Ripa. I think she believes she's nurturing them by doing so, somehow.

Rosie is walked all over by younger and older minority women - such as Oprah and Whoopi - but won't stand up to them, or bully them as she does straight white women. I believe she's afraid she will come across as 'racist'.

As far as I can see, Rosie stays far away from young minority men. All these rappers and other minority young men who hit women, sexually abuse others, and shoot each other - I've never seen Rosie publicly humiliate them in public (such as Chris Brown and R Kelly, or Michael Jackson).

by Anonymousreply 56April 22, 2023 9:00 PM

Is Rosie still dating the younger woman with tattoos?

by Anonymousreply 57April 22, 2023 10:39 PM

Ro is the epitome of angry butch lesbian
