Sorry Not Sorry! No Doubt’s “It’s My Life” is much better than the original

Having just heard both back to back, I don’t know how anyone could prefer the original. It’s inferior in every way! Talk Talk must be embarrassed.

Talk Talk composed it, so STFU, OP.

by Anonymousreply 1April 18, 2023 9:31 PM

I disagree OP. Everything is better in Talk Talk OG. It has a beautiful chiming tone. It's propulsive, and polyrhythmic, true to its era. Gwen and Mark Hollis are both stylised singers but Gwen sings like she is squeezing out turds, in a baby Betty Boop voice.

YOU HAVE ZERO TASTE, in a nutshell.

by Anonymousreply 2April 18, 2023 9:37 PM

No Doubt did a very good job with their remake.

But Talk Talk is Talk Talk. They did it first. They did it their way. What they did was excellent for them. If they hadn't done it first, No Doubt would have had nothing to remake.

Comparing the two versions is inevitable, but trying to say which is better is misguided.

by Anonymousreply 3April 18, 2023 9:39 PM

OP? You have no taste.

by Anonymousreply 4April 18, 2023 9:48 PM

OP is a fucking idiot.

by Anonymousreply 5April 18, 2023 9:49 PM

Um, no.

by Anonymousreply 6April 18, 2023 9:52 PM

Talk Talk by a mile.

by Anonymousreply 7April 18, 2023 9:55 PM

OP, take a pair of chopsticks and puncture your eardrums. Obviously, they are of no use anyway.

by Anonymousreply 8April 18, 2023 10:17 PM

OP? Who’s your favourite artist?

by Anonymousreply 9April 18, 2023 10:24 PM

I'm sorry you've got water on the brain, OP. Now go sit in the corner and eat paste like a good mongoloid.

by Anonymousreply 10April 18, 2023 10:26 PM

Talk Talk's Mark Hollis' voice was unmistakable. One-of-a-kind. RIP Mark.

by Anonymousreply 11April 18, 2023 10:29 PM

Jessica Simpson, Beyoncé, Gwen Stefani.

by Anonymousreply 12April 18, 2023 10:29 PM

Oh, and my older boyfriend is DL's beloved Belinda Carlisle Stan.

by Anonymousreply 13April 18, 2023 10:30 PM

Talk Talk has the better opening, No Doubt has the better chorus.

by Anonymousreply 14April 18, 2023 10:37 PM

No one who's a Belinda Carlisle stan is beloved, OP.

by Anonymousreply 15April 18, 2023 10:38 PM

I love both versions. No Doubt definitely made the song their own to my generation but the original is also a classic. I could listen to either and be happy. It just shows how great a song it is.

by Anonymousreply 16April 18, 2023 10:44 PM

OP also likes Six Pence None The Richler’s cover of There She Goes.

by Anonymousreply 17April 19, 2023 4:49 AM

*Richer’s

by Anonymousreply 18April 19, 2023 4:50 AM

R17 I did a spit take reading your funny post, and then I laughed louder realizing you'd typed "Six Pence None The Richler"

You're adorable xo

by Anonymousreply 19April 19, 2023 5:01 AM

OP is the new "No Doubt did it better than Talk Talk" troll.

Welcome, troll!

by Anonymousreply 20April 19, 2023 5:03 AM

That's musical blasphemy to compare this remake to the original, which is just haunting and luscious. I still remember when the music video was first released. It stood out then, and it still stands out now. I don't mind Ms Stefani, enjoyed her first solo song, but it's no comparison to the tender vocals of Mark Hollis. What did annoy me was reading an article once that No Doubt just picked this song randomly, out of some 'list'. Like 'Hmmmm, which song should we re-make from all these amazing, already unique 80's tunes?'. Why would you do that AND pick a song like this that is just perfect? I like to pretend that their cover version of this beautiful song is one that doesn't exist. (Yes, I still listen to Talk Talk regularly)

by Anonymousreply 21April 19, 2023 5:08 AM

OP, do you like Ni’Jah?

by Anonymousreply 22April 19, 2023 5:09 AM

This cover is a B-side. At best.

by Anonymousreply 23April 19, 2023 5:10 AM

I was never a fan of No Doubt. They just came across as a faux punk, faux ska band to me. But I really do like their cover of this song. The only other song of theirs I ever liked was Hella Good.

I don't hate them. I just didn't care for them.

by Anonymousreply 24April 19, 2023 5:25 AM

Poor Talk Talk feeling embarrassed as their royalties continue to pour into the bank with every play.

by Anonymousreply 25April 19, 2023 5:28 AM

I had forgotten she used to look like that.

by Anonymousreply 26April 19, 2023 6:00 AM

If you enjoy atonal bleating lamb sounds, then yeah, No Doubt’s better.

by Anonymousreply 27April 19, 2023 6:01 AM

[quote]If you enjoy atonal bleating lamb sounds, then yeah, No Doubt’s better.

Ahhhh. Is that why she called her clothing line "Lamb"?

by Anonymousreply 28April 19, 2023 6:15 AM

I've always wondered what it's like to live with brain damage.

by Anonymousreply 29April 19, 2023 11:07 AM

We did this in 2021. It got to 156 replies.

I can’t see how anyone could thing that remake is better. Mark Hollis was an amazing artist. Gwen Stefani not so much.

It's definitely one of No Doubt's better songs, but it pales in comparison to Talk Talk's original. The bass line may be better, but Gwen's voice is horrific per usual.

by Anonymousreply 31April 19, 2023 11:43 AM

DL circling the drain with braindead repetitive topics. Thanks OP!

by Anonymousreply 32April 19, 2023 11:43 AM

This thread, and the original, both suck.

by Anonymousreply 33April 19, 2023 11:51 AM

I know. Let's talk about Jackie Onassis. We never do that! I'll go start a thread. Or the overlooked or forgotten movie "Cruising"

[quote] Poor Talk Talk feeling embarrassed as their royalties continue to pour into the bank with every play.

Not these days with streaming, which continuously finds ways to fuck songwriters, even as it professes to be getting better.

by Anonymousreply 35April 19, 2023 12:00 PM

It is far worse than the original - Gwen whined instead of singing.

by Anonymousreply 36April 19, 2023 12:02 PM

Agreed, No Doubt sucked then and they still suck.

by Anonymousreply 37April 19, 2023 12:39 PM

Check out Mark's unique voice on "Give It Up".

I like that Gwen has good taste and wanted to cover it. But the original is unsurpassable.

by Anonymousreply 39April 19, 2023 2:53 PM

My first thought too, R39. Interesting choice for a cover. But not much of a new spin on it.

by Anonymousreply 40April 19, 2023 4:30 PM

I like both versions.

No Doubt is one of those bands that I liked at the time, but never have an inkling to listen to today. Plus, like Avril Lavigne or Ashanti (as but two examples), I forget how absolutely enormous No Doubt was in their heyday.

by Anonymousreply 41April 19, 2023 4:35 PM

[quote]Talk Talk must be embarrassed.

Well, you're right, OP.

The collective members of Talk Talk, no matter where they may be on the earth any given time, are indeed embarrassed.

You fucking retard.

by Anonymousreply 42April 19, 2023 4:53 PM

Horrible

by Anonymousreply 43April 19, 2023 11:40 PM

Talk Talk's It's My Life is easily one of the best original songs of the 1980s. No Doubt's cover is just a more commercial paler version of the original. There a lot of a remade songs that are comparable and sometimes better than the original version. This is definitely not one of them.

by Anonymousreply 44April 19, 2023 11:45 PM

Moby's original South Side was excellent as it was originally recorded. I think he added that woman to try to cross over to pop but she definitely pissed all over that remake too. Here's the original.

I like No Doubt's version but I agree the original is superior in every way. No Doubt was fun. Gwen got so annoying after she went solo

by Anonymousreply 46June 5, 2023 8:30 PM

I agree op

by Anonymousreply 47June 5, 2023 8:34 PM

Bullshit. The original cannot be topped.

RIP Mark Hollis. Was a wonderful songwriter and man.

by Anonymousreply 48June 5, 2023 8:35 PM

Don't you forget.

by Anonymousreply 49June 5, 2023 8:38 PM

I prefer this version
