David Hemmings, Marlon Brando and Russell Crowe to name a few
Name the actors you lost some respect for once they got fat?

Sam Smith

Brendan Fraser - not necessarily because he got fat, it just seemed that that's when he became so annoying

Jack Nicholson.

I don't know what happened to Hemmings and Crowe (booze would be my guess from the looks of both) but after reading about Brando's eating disorder I have compassion for him. He nearly died following an episode of binge eating and vomiting, and spent pretty much his entire adult life trying to lose weight. The man had a hopelessly dysfunctional relationship with food.
I'm not sure why an actor putting on weight means that I would lose respect for him or her-- just because Brando got fat doesn't mean that he lost the ability to act.

The OP is the "How Can Celebrities Get Fat? How Can They Get Old? HOW CAN THEY DO THAT TO THEMSELVES?!!" troll.

They probably hated on Bridget Fonda in those threads as well. Hell, they may have even started one or both.

Orson Welles.

Yes, all of them.
And there were a few because they got skinny because unfortunately, whatever talent they had seemed to had been lipo'd out with the fat.

Jack Nicholson
Oliver Reed
Val Kilmer

I believe the biggest hindrance in Orson Welles film making career was not the Hollywood machine, but his own self-absorption and gluttony.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | April 18, 2023 12:25 AM |
Self-absorption comes with the territory but I have to say that Welles seems very charming in interviews I've seen, R12. How much ice cream Orson could put away in one sitting isn't the most interesting thing about him.

R13 I'm actually a big fan of Orson but there was a strong self-destructive factor to his persona.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | April 18, 2023 12:31 AM |
Yes, it's part of his appeal I think R14. He's a tragic figure in many ways.

And yet, Niminy-Piminy Mary, even you cannot deny that that would have been fascinating to watch.

Orson's only big moneymaking film was The Stranger, which he said he did to prove he could make a financially successful film. So he could do it. If he had wanted to, he could have made two or three movies that were commercial, at a time, then made one for himself. But he couldn't or didn't want to work that way. He was spolied, in a way, by being acknowledged as very talented at a young age (long before the movies). He couldn't do the sucking up to make it as a commercial director, so he was a non-commercial director. Amazingly, he still made some pretty big films, which few other artists could do in the manner he created them and financed them.

r4 It was his mental health disorders unleashed. He was into excess. It's minimized how out of control his spending was. Which is largely what fueled his nice guy persona. He wasn't doing the typical celeb trade up like trailer winning the lotto. He was caught in the manic-depressive tide pulls of somewhere between hoarder and desperately buying affection.

I also think Orson Welles was the only person considered one of the 5 or 10 greatest directors who also starred in almost all his films (except a handful). But he was never considered one of the 5 or 10 greatest actors.

OP is probably a fat fuck himself.

Orson was hard to cast. He wasn't a conventional leading man. His voice was superb though and with that dark sardonic quality he had Orson fared much better as a bad guy. He is perfectly cast as Harry Lime in The Third Man.

R23 who is that?

"Losing respect" is harsh, but I'm currently in the middle of rewatching Mad Men and it pains me to see how elegant and sexy Julia Ormond was, not so long ago.

Colleen Camp.
