16-year-old black boy shot for ringing the wrong doorbell

His condition is critical but stable.

Hope that house is burnt to the ground. I mean that happens at the wrong address all the time. I mean it’s commensurate, taking something meaningful away with little thought.

by Anonymousreply 1April 17, 2023 4:39 PM

Well obviously if a kid comes to your door and rings the bell and you don't trust who he is, you don't answer the door. You don't open the door and shoot him in the head.

by Anonymousreply 2April 17, 2023 4:46 PM

The homeowner actually never opened the door, R2, he fired through the glass.

by Anonymousreply 4April 17, 2023 4:48 PM

I hope the homeowner now experiences real fear because people know he lives.

Somewhat reminds me of a case on Georgia over 10 years ago. Old man with Alzheimer's wanders away from his house one night and gets lost. He turns the doorknob of some house and gets shot through the door by the homeowner. I was taking care of my Alzheimer's mom back then... Homeowner got off.

by Anonymousreply 5April 17, 2023 4:51 PM

Why did you change "black teen" to "back boy", OP?

by Anonymousreply 6April 17, 2023 4:52 PM

^"WHERE he lives" at r5

by Anonymousreply 7April 17, 2023 4:53 PM

Glad “black boy” is used. I see too much “white boy” here.

R3 I was just going by the article that OP linked to, that said, "The suspect opened the door and shot Mr Yarl twice, according to family lawyers." I didn't realize there was different info.

by Anonymousreply 10April 17, 2023 5:15 PM

The Right has spent many, many years braying about "scary Black people" and the protests in 2020 just made them amp up the volume. All these white folks act like they have to carry on like they're under siege when a Black person comes to their house.

That nutty couple in St. Louis (MO again!) brandishing their weapons in their front yard while protesters matched past their house are the poster children for these paranoid crackers.

by Anonymousreply 11April 17, 2023 6:07 PM

If that kid had simply gone to the back door or servant's entrance, all this could have been avoided.

by Anonymousreply 12April 17, 2023 6:09 PM

Black boy? Oh, dear.

by Anonymousreply 13April 17, 2023 6:10 PM

My father was a black boy?

by Anonymousreply 14April 17, 2023 6:13 PM

My grandmother said "colored boy" and "colored girl" with the typical mix of true affection and appalling condescension typical of her generation.

You could even call the police if you're so mortally afraid of Black people. There were lots of options that don't involve trying to kill a 16YO kid.

by Anonymousreply 19April 17, 2023 6:43 PM

R15 my Granny was Black and she used the same terminology. I also noticed the distinction she made between "White lady" and "Colored gal" Granny grew up in the rural south and never finished school. She was taken out and sent to work after 4th grade.

If "colored" is such an offensive word, then why doesn't the NAACP change its name?

by Anonymousreply 22April 17, 2023 6:54 PM

I read about it this morning and felt sick. Shot a few times I believe for ringing a door bell. By some 80 something yr old fuck too (at least that's what some were saying in the comment section). Lived a full life and shoots down a fucking kid... Not once, just kept shooting, even when the kid was trying to flee. He was held for 24 hrs, got to go home and immediately had everything cleaned up. People said that's an upper class area, making me think this old man never had a thing to worry about ever before, but couldn't wait to pull out a gun to "defend" himself. A lot of these home defense types almost cum when they bring up getting the chance to blow someone away and I fear lthat's exactly what happened in this case because who the fuck brings a cocked and loaded gun to their door over the doorbell simply ringing?! And then doesn't wait until he finds out what the kid wants, he shoots him multiple times, including a couple in his head.

That poor kid isn't out of the woods yet either, not with him being shot in the head (I read twice). He was into science, wanted to be an engineer, and played an instrument. I'm really hoping he can continue with those things after recovery. I guess his GoFundMe has raised half a million, which I say good. He'll need it for therapy. That trigger happy POS old man needs to pay.

A young white woman was just shot and killed in NY state for driving down the wrong driveway. She was housesitting for a friend. Too many guns!

[quote]Turns out he ENTERED THE WRONG HOUSE.

That is incorrect.

Officers responded to a home on April 13, just before 10 p.m., after receiving reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they found Ralph, 16, who had been shot outside the residence by the homeowner.

by Anonymousreply 30April 17, 2023 8:38 PM

The homeowner shot the kid. The kid was lying on the ground so the homeowner shot him again and they have to decide if the homeowner was justified?????????????? This man better be charged. I never hated anyone until Trump became President and all his loonies showed themselves for who they are.

by Anonymousreply 31April 17, 2023 8:47 PM

He was already released from the hospital after taking a point blank shot to the head?

Something tells me we aren't being told all the facts.

by Anonymousreply 32April 17, 2023 8:47 PM

Horrible. Attempted Murder, plain and simple.

by Anonymousreply 33April 17, 2023 8:51 PM

R32 when I read another article this morning, he was laid out in a hospital bed still.

by Anonymousreply 34April 17, 2023 9:15 PM

R27 idk where you found that, but everything I read said he was shot through a glass door, after ringing the doorbell, with the homeowner continuing to shoot after he already shot him in the head.

by Anonymousreply 35April 17, 2023 9:19 PM

R32 alright, my mistake. Just read the article under the CNN one, which says he spent 3 days in the hospital and was released. My bad. As far as him entering the house, I'm not sure what's up with that because it's confusing:.

"Police learned the teenager’s parents had asked him to pick up his siblings at an address on 115th Terrace, but he accidentally went to a home on 115th Street, where he was shot. Lawyers for Ralph’s family also say the youth was shot after he went to the wrong house.

Ralph Yarl was picking up his younger brothers when he mistakenly rang the doorbell at the wrong house. A man shot Ralph twice and now he’s in critical condition. His family needs support during this tragedy,” Crump tweeted."

by Anonymousreply 36April 17, 2023 9:27 PM

That doesn't sound like he entered, right? Anyone else confused as to why the headline says he entered the home, yet the family and lawyer are saying he just went to the wrong house? I'm not sure if CNN screwed up or the shooter told police that's what happened, and CNN didn't include that source. The neighbors (in this article) say when they came out, he was already laying on the ground from being shot -- once in the head, another in the arm, with the glass door shattered because the guy shot through it. I'm going to assume that headline is wrong for now, unless anyone has a different source confirming that from the victim.

by Anonymousreply 37April 17, 2023 9:34 PM

What a sad country we live in .

by Anonymousreply 38April 17, 2023 9:39 PM

Horrible. But something similar and totally different happened to me today. A while, 60-something house inspector walked into my house without knocking and then acted like I was out of line for being pissed off. I had to explain why it was inappropriate THREE TIMES before he even apologized. In the back of my mind I thought "do you know how many people would have shot you?" While thinking that I was trying to discount the thought. Boom. I'm proven right. Poor kid. I hope he'll be okay & that he ends up owning that house.

by Anonymousreply 39April 17, 2023 9:40 PM

Such a beautiful boy. Thankfully he's going to survive, but damn that is a heavy weight to carry.

Preppers and gun nuts salivate at the idea of being able to use their weapons. This pussy finally found his chance in an innocent teenager who simply rang his doorbell.

If he is an elderly man, maybe he's a bad shot and that worked in the boy's favor.

by Anonymousreply 40April 17, 2023 9:46 PM

R39 that would've been my first thought as well. I feel like even the utility workers are acting extra cautious when they check the meter these days.

Wait - the kid was shot - TWICE - once in the head on April 13, but was released from the hospital on April 16th?

He was shot twice, but only needed two full days in the hospital? While I get that infection is a huge issue at hospitals, I'm stunned that anyone could be shot, let alone in the head, and be perfectly fine to go home.

[quote]If "colored" is such an offensive word, then why doesn't the NAACP change its name?

First of all, history. That's been the name of their organization since 1909. There's over 100 years of name recognition and divorcing themselves from it would be difficult and confusing to people.

But secondly, they don't actually use the term "National Association of Colored People" occasionally or maybe even ever anymore. Look through their website. You'll see they only refer to themselves as the NAACP. Other organizations have done things like this, abandoning their name, in favor of just an acronym, sometimes, because their mission changed, and their old name no longer reflects their new mission, or for reasons like this. They are saddled with an historical name that eventually went out of fashion, but it's their identity and they need to retain it. So they choose to use the acronym instead of the full name.

I've been a member of the NAACP myself since at least 2012. They threw their full weight behind the marriage equality fight. So I've been a supporter ever since.

And I'm a white gay man.

by Anonymousreply 55April 17, 2023 10:39 PM

[quote] Viola Davis and Halle Berry has asked for " all hands on deck" -- what does that mean btw?

It means the same as what other parental voices of all races imply it to mean:

Just as the mantra during the George Floyd period was “when he called out for his mama, all mothers answered”, now they are saying they no child should be executed for the mistake of going to the correct house number on “____ Street” instead of “____Terrace”.

As for the shooting, well, my guess is that the 85 year old might be suffering from dementia. Or maybe he answered the door, told the kid he had the wrong house, the kid didn't like hearing that and an altercation ensued. At any rate, there's a lot about this that is still unknown.

You're right. A lot is still unknown. But it's curious that your initial reaction is to defend the shooter (he might be suffering from dementia. Well, does letting an 85 year old man with dementia have a gun sound like a good idea to you?) and to blame the kid who got shot (the kid got pissed off and started an altercation).

So don't tell people not to jump to conclusions and then jump to the absolute worst (racist) conclusions. M'kay?

The homeowner might’ve been justified if the kid was trying to break in, but all he did was knock on the door or ring a doorbell on the wrong house.

by Anonymousreply 74April 18, 2023 12:11 AM

Weird R66 when similar events happen so close together. We have some real nutters out there if you can't even turn around in a driveway without being killed. You can't tell me these shooters aren't looking for action in some sick way if they have a gun already loaded and waiting for any perceived threat. Caught her turning around on the damn driveway he was so hot to shoot someone. It's like that guy in TX that shot a maintenance man on Christmas Eve, right through his window. Didn't even bother to look through the curtains to see who it was.

These people aren't even waiting a half second to think it through logically. I've had some weird people come to my house and never hurried to grab a gun. I just use common sense (using a chain lock to ask who it is, look out my window, etc). There's a million other things people could do to stay safe, over immediately shooting someone dead -- get a dog, an alarm system, a safety alert bracelet, a camera system, a ring doorbell, etc.

by Anonymousreply 75April 18, 2023 12:11 AM

Oh my,?Are there going to be race riots??

by Anonymousreply 76April 18, 2023 12:16 AM

I also think we're seeing heightened aggression as well. Paranoia from political stress and propaganda. Fox news scaring the shit out of people. Most of all though, IMO, it might be a touch of covid brain damage causing people to be extra aggressive. No one should feel that confident about shooting/ killing someone, even in justifiable situations, unless they're psycho. Just giving these assholes a shorter fuse than they already had. That's just my personal side theory though for this uptick in extra aggression we're seeing in general.

by Anonymousreply 77April 18, 2023 12:21 AM

Just a reminder too, before anyone else wants to assume the old guy was mistaken somehow -- this was an upper class area. It's not like he lived in some dangerous neighborhood.

by Anonymousreply 79April 18, 2023 12:24 AM

by Anonymousreply 81April 18, 2023 12:34 AM

Hard core gun addicts eagerly search for an excuse to shoot someone. They live for it; anger is the only emotion they feel. Blood and vengeance is their endorphin rush. It's no fun, to them, to just have an arsenal of unused firearms. They want to shoot their guns, to maim and kill people.

by Anonymousreply 82April 18, 2023 12:56 AM

True r82. Those of us who are normal people and have no interest in guns don't understand this. These people live for their guns, their guns are a central part of their lives. As insane as that seems to us, there is a huge number of people in the US who are totally obsessed.

I think one reason why nothing is done about gun violence in the US is because our government officials are scared shitless about what these people would do if assault rifles were banned, for example. They're afraid these wackos will go totally unhinged and start shooting up the whole country.

by Anonymousreply 83April 18, 2023 1:00 AM

by Anonymousreply 86April 18, 2023 1:05 AM

[quote] What if it was an 85 year old Black man who shot a white kid?

If there was no racial component to this incident it probably pass unnoticed. But it's a national new story because the kid was black and the old man was white. Although a photo of him I've seen makes him look vaguely Hispanic. He also looks unwell. My guess is that he probably got terrified by a stranger banging on the door and grabbed a weapon. He's a very old man; maybe he felt helpless to defend himself without a gun.

by Anonymousreply 87April 18, 2023 1:07 AM

All the different versions - whether the young man entered the house, whether the old man shot him through the door, whether he shot him in the head, etc etc - taught me an important lesson: NEVER, EVER, TRUST THE NEWS, NO MATTER THE SOURCE. THEY WILL MAKE UP SHIT JUST TO BE FIRST ON A STORY.

by Anonymousreply 88April 18, 2023 1:44 AM

No one knows it was racially motivated. It it were racially motivated it likely comes from fear of black men and not hateful racism.

R92,

He is a prosecutor. Prosecutors are lawyers. Lawyers are liars. You can NEVER trust a lawyer.

by Anonymousreply 94April 18, 2023 2:05 AM

R79 idk, what if it was? Because racially motivated or not, I still find it fucked up that a person's first reaction would be to shoot someone at their door. These "accidental shootings" are starting to pile up due to paranoid gun owners. They aren't exactly proving a good case for having guns if they're ready to shoot anyone. I have random strangers stop at my house and I have guns. Never once have I felt the need to immediately bring a loaded gun to see who is at my house. Only if there was evidence of someone up to no good would I think to do that (as in, them not knocking, or standing on my porch like thousands of people tend to do daily). Again, if they're that paranoid there's a bunch of other measures they could take before taking a life -- a dog, an alarm, a camera, a chain lock, etc.

by Anonymousreply 95April 18, 2023 2:07 AM

Again, it's an area that's upper class and something like 86% white (from what I read from people that live in that area). I can see why the family and lawyers would feel it might have racial motivation behind it, because they're asking if this would've been the same outcome if a White kid knocked. I guess that's impossible to know but it doesn't look good. I'm sure there's going to be questions asked, like does he always goes to the door with a loaded gun? Were there recent break ins in that neighborhood? Had he ever been a victim of a break in? How long has he owned that gun? Did he try communicating first? Why did he feel the need to shoot him after the initial head shot? What was his occupation before retirement? What do his neighbors have to say about him? Have they, or anyone else ever had a gun pulled on them while visiting his door?

I think there’s more to the story. I think the kid probably arrived in a tank and, using a bullhorn, threatened to demolish the house and flatten the resident. The resident, who I would imagine is a lifelong civil rights activist, probably gave a dozen warnings before reluctantly firing to save his life.

These are things I sense are not being told, but that I can reasonably infer. If a white person ever shoots a black person, extreme provocation is usually involved.

by Anonymousreply 98April 18, 2023 2:19 AM

R97 holy shit, no wonder they think it's racially motivated. Send like he didn't even try to talk to him and shot him immediately. He was so frightened huh, that he shot through his only safe, locked barrier? Then he was so scared, he felt compelled to stay near the "intruder" so he could shoot him some more? Didn't feel like he should call out to neighbors? Call the police? Just keep shooting at him. Couldn't stop and use his brain to see it was a young (clean cut to boot) kid? What an asshole.

by Anonymousreply 99April 18, 2023 2:23 AM

This part is even better: Lester told police he had just laid down when he **heard the doorbell**. He grabbed the gun before heading to the front door. Upon opening the main door, which he said was locked along with the storm door, Lester saw Yarl and **“believed someone was attempting to break into the house,”** Lester told police.

🤔 Attempting to break into his house, but rang his doorbell. FFS. Why didn't he just close his main door again, since the storm door was locked, and call for police? I'm sure we can all guess why not.

No words were exchanged, he never attempted to cross the threshold (the owner didn't even open the door), and he was shot in the head, then shot a second time while he lay on the ground.

He had to crawl to three different houses before anyone would help him, and then they made him lay on the ground with his arm stretched out in front of him.

The shooter has been charged now. First degree assault. Not attempted murder.

This is sickening.

STOP DEFENDING HIM! If he was so fucking, fearful, confused, and unalert, he should have called the fucking police! He walked out there, and shot the kid a second time. That's not self-defense. That's attempted murder. Just because he's old and looks like a crazy person doesn't excuse shooting a child. If anything, I seriously question why the fuck he was allowed to have a gun. His age is no excuse.

by Anonymousreply 109April 18, 2023 2:56 AM

Have any of you idiots ever heard of "diminished capacity" as a criminal defense? It's used plenty. Somebody seriously harms or kills someone and their defense is that they were mentally ill, mentally disabled, mentally retarded, and thereby should not be held responsible; but if they are convicted they should be shown leniency. Autism is used as a defense in that regard; the defense is that case is that the autistic person just didn't "understand" what they were doing. The infirmity of old age could very well be used as a defense in this incident. I take it not many know much about the criminal defense tactics of lawyers.

Listen, sweetheart, if he was fearful and confused and not alert then he would be more likely NOT to call the fucking police! He'd be so mixed up he would be irrational and not know what the hell to do, and their first thing that came to mind was to grab a gun for protection.

By the way, I'm not "DEFENDING HIM!!!" as you wailed in hysteria. Just stating some possible scenarios. So calm down, sweetie.

How's that wish for every household to have a gun(s) working out for ya'? (said in a mocking, sarah palinesque type screech)

by Anonymousreply 113April 18, 2023 3:07 AM

He never entered anyone's house. The owner shot him through the glass, he was hit in the head near his eye socket, more towards the side. He fell and when he was on the ground the man shot him a second time wounding him in the arm. I have to wonder if that was because reflexively the young boy put his arm up to try to protect himself. Somehow he got up and ran banged on the door at three houses and no one would help. A man heard the noise and hopped a fence and ran through a neighbor's yard to finally help him as he laid on e ground bleeding out. Finally the homeowner whose house he was lying on the ground came out with a towel to "help" until 911 arrived. Everyone needs to really think about this.Because those people are total shit.Total.

It’s awful and it shows the problem with how the law is written. “Feeling in danger” could be based on delusions. I think even the racists on the right will see this for themselves in the way it already is playing out with road rage incidents. When everyone has a gun, and everyone assumes everyone else also has a gun, any angry word constitutes “feeling in danger”. Just getting angry is a whole lot more common than being actively homicidal. But this case doesn’t even involve anything as complicated as that and it’s open and shut. The homeowner should be arrested.

by Anonymousreply 157April 18, 2023 1:04 PM

The kid rang the doorbell though. It's not logically to assume a break in. It doesn't matter if he was scared, alone, old, or whatever. You don't shoot people without knowing you're in real danger. He then opened the main door, with a locked storm door between them. Still no reason to feel he was in danger. His next step wasn't to communicate, give him a warning, shut his main door, etc., instead it was to shoot him in the head. No one sees the problem with that?

Just like the guy who killed a young woman for turning around on his driveway. It doesn't matter why the shooter feels scared when it's obvious no one did anything to prompt that response. It's clear there's trigger happy people out there, that should pay the price for poor judgement. It would be no different than if I was driving, intentionally plowed a walker, then tried to say I was scared. No they weren't running at me, or brandishing a weapon, I just felt something was off, it was kind of late and I was alone in my car. Scared doesn't cover trying to kill someone for no reason other than being in your vicinity.

It's as though they are genuinely offended on behalf of this trigger happy old man. Do they see themselves in him?

And you know what, the story about the jackass so threatened by a small 20 year old blonde girl should have gotten more attention. We need to keep shining the light on these morons and the laws that enable them.

For what it's worth, the man who shot Ms. Gillis was arrested and charged immediately. The man who shot young Ralph was held and released. As our country has a history with letting people get away with shooting black people, the response was going to be different.

by Anonymousreply 163April 18, 2023 3:52 PM

How likely is it to be racially motivated when a southern white man, born in the 1930s, shoots a black teenager because he rang his doorbell?

You could say I'm profiling the old southern white man, but as he did almost take out a bright young life because the teenager was black, I'll argue that he demonstrated his own views himself rather clearly.

by Anonymousreply 164April 18, 2023 4:33 PM

r163 you are also talking about the north vs. the south. big difference.

by Anonymousreply 165April 18, 2023 4:36 PM

The Extreme Right has been working on this for decades. Decades. Even before Nixon, but he and Agnew perfected it. During LBJ's term in office and even before, we had the Civil Rights demonstrations. Evening news featured Black kids being beaten by cops for marching, for sitting in at lunch counters, for riding interstate buses. We saw fire hoses turned on them, and cops on horseback running them down. The Montgomery Bus boycott lasted for a full year in the mid-50's. We had riots in the 60's. Riots in Harlem, in Cleveland, in Detroit, Watts, Newark, etc.etc.etc. Civil disobedience gave way to civil disorder. Urban meant Black, as whites fled to the suburbs. After laws were passed, Housing remained segregated by financial institutions de facto, when the laws forbid it. Schools were re-segregated de facto when the laws forbid it.

Roger Ailes, who made Fox news what it is today, cut his teeth on hateful, divisive propaganda in the Nixon White House along with a young Roger Stone. The fact is there is a lot more Black on Black crime than there ever was Black on White crime. But the Right taught White people to fear Blacks, as violent, murderous rapists, who were coming after them. It has always been the fear of crime, not actual crime that scares whites. On top of that in the mid to late 60's we had the Anti War demonstrations. Huge demonstrations against 'Nam. Nixon and Agnew tapped into the fears and the "fatigue" of the "vast silent majority of Americans..." and also popularized "Law and Order " which was a dog whistle for racial violence.

The Klan always promoted race war, and now it has become mainstream. It became popular to fear a race war. It's easy to demonize Blacks, especially Black men. It's been going on since post-Reconstruction. The people that the NRA pandered to are the people who went nuts buying up weapons to prepared for a race war. Militia groups, etc. And when the government was painted as "too liberal" they were anti government too. So this fear of Black people has been hardwired into White America for decades upon decades. It is reflexive.

The polarization helps promote this fear. People live isolated from one another. Home schooling and charter schools mean kids don't have to see or interact with "others." So when you encounter a Black teenager on your front porch at night, you grab a gun. And when you open the door and see who it is, you shoot to kill. You aim for his head. Boom. There's no doubt in my mind this is a racially motivated hate crime. Attempted murder. Because if it's self defense, you don't shoot him again while he is laying on the ground bleeding.

by Anonymousreply 166April 18, 2023 4:48 PM

I don’t think that’s completely right, r165.

From what I’ve read it seems like it’s the intricacies of the state laws (which, of course, might have historical legacy related to the difference of north vs. south, though).

What I want someone who is smarter than I am to explain is how the system in MO—which lets a person of interest like this man go home if authorities need to investigate further so they can make the appropriate charge prior to arrest—is not kissing cousin to the NY bail reform they claim will be the end of civilization.

by Anonymousreply 168April 18, 2023 7:06 PM

by Anonymousreply 169April 18, 2023 7:21 PM

R159 yes I'm aware there's cases where burglars ring the doorbell, but it's the collection of circumstances that should've told the guy it was unlikely it was a break in. The doorbell was only the first hint that maybe, just maybe, it was someone at your door for any number of reasons (Mormons, girl scout cookies, a neighbor, a lost kid, a utility worker, wrong house, etc). The point I was making is that this shoot first mentality is out of control.

by Anonymousreply 170April 18, 2023 7:29 PM

Plenty of Americans live a full life, without ever being victim of home invasion, nor needing to immediately shoot someone at their front door to feel "safe". The shooter even admitted he "saw a black male approximately 6 feet tall pulling on the exterior storm door handle," (something the victim says he never did) "He stated he believed someone was attempting to break into the house" -- you know, this scared old man, that unlocked the door, risking his safety, so he could then "shoot twice within a few seconds of opening the door,". This scared old man then stood over a kid, laying bleeding on the ground after being shot in the head, so he could shoot him again!

The same scared old man that only said this to the fleeing, wounded victim: "Don't come around here," like he's fucking Clint Eastwood... Real scared wasn't he?

by Anonymousreply 171April 18, 2023 7:40 PM

R171, also, the news story didn’t say what time of evening it happened, but I got the impression it was a time most people would be assumed to be awake, not the middle of the night. The parents had sent the 16 year old to pick up his 11 year old twin brothers from a friend’s house; unless it was from some kind of sleepover, I would imagine that’s pretty early evening? Anyone could ring your doorbell around dinner time.

by Anonymousreply 172April 18, 2023 8:06 PM

The shooter has been charged. This article says police responded shortly before 10 pm to the scene; but of course the whole incident happened at some point before that, with the kid knocking at other doors for help, the Good Samaritan eventually coming to help, and someone at some point calling 911.

“He parked in the driveway, went up to the door and rang the doorbell," his aunt Faith Spoonmore said in a video posted to social media. R172 I looked for the time as well and didn't see one, but figured like you it couldn't have been that late if he was picking up younger siblings. I'm glad they are doing the right thing by bringing charges. They had to. They risked sending the message that it's okay to shoot someone if say you were scared (for no logical reason) and the victim looked a certain way that made you scared.

If I think it's a burglar ringing my doorbell, and I have a gun, my first inclination would be to shoot the gun over his head to let him know I have it and tell him the next one is for him... if a burglar knows you have a gun, he will usually run away. it's usually some dumbass junkie.

R181, well, if you shoot your gun over someone’s head, the bullet could go somewhere else where you have no idea - through a nearby car door, into someone’s yard where a child is playing. You can’t even safely shoot a gun into the air, because what goes up comes down, and there are stories of people dying from bullets that were shot into the air a mile away. If you thought it was a burglar for no other reason than fear you could call the police. If it was just someone trying to meet a date at a different house, for example, and they rang the wrong bell, they wouldn’t actually break in.

by Anonymousreply 184April 18, 2023 9:14 PM

Another thought too, there are delivery drivers, door dash, Amazon, etc., delivering at 10 at night routinely. The idea of responding to a doorbell ringing by killing someone makes no sense in any world, unless the guy was so racist that he wanted to kill a black man and thought he could get away with it and otherwise didn’t care.

by Anonymousreply 185April 18, 2023 9:18 PM

Huh. The wrong doorbell. The old guy should have installed a different doorbell and then none of this would have happened.

by Anonymousreply 187April 18, 2023 9:20 PM

The best part about that incident, r187, is that despite ample evidence of having been targeted because he's black, including a shot up truck and packages with bullet holes, the same victim was sent on the same route to the same neighborhood on his next shift!!! GAH!

“Jayland was unarmed and running away when police opened fire, firing 90 shots, hitting him 60,” Turner wrote as she posted the bodycam video. “The Department of Justice needs to step in to investigate immediately.”

Turner noted that officers were reckless.

“The cop almost shot two other cops,” she tweeted. “Just absolute recklessness.”

Another incident from last year. It involved a Door Dash driver with no criminal record; because it was the police that did it we might never know the whole story; but he could also have been targeted for “not belonging in the neighborhood”.

“This disparity occurs across geographic regions as well. The southern United States, which has weaker gun laws on average than the nation overall, sees the highest rates of victimization from road rage shootings, double those in the Northeast. The nine northeastern states have both the lowest rates of victimization from road rage shootings and overall far stronger gun laws than much of the nation.“

“In terms of overall crime rates, states that have weakened their permitting systems have seen a 13 to 15 percent increase in crime”

Less gun control led to more road rage deaths and a substantial overall increase in crime…just from relaxing gun permits.

by Anonymousreply 233April 19, 2023 1:23 PM

I can't help but wonder about the "seasonal" nature of a lot of these shootings. I also wonder what the shooters' media environment is. Do they frequent social media forums, conspiracy sites, online groups or podcast, where their fears and paranoia are stoked? I think it's safe to say that the shootings trigger more shootings. They seem to come in clusters. This old man probably watched Fox news and hated POC. He feared them and was ready to fight them.Primed. So when that doorbell rang, he went to war. Yes it's the guns, but it's something else going on too. The guns are part of a long range political strategy. This is not a conspiracy theory.

by Anonymousreply 234April 19, 2023 1:40 PM

R234 here. I'm sensing something like a pattern. Yes they're random., but I feel like some invisible, online presence has primed the shooters. Maybe not this old man, but with the mass shootings. It's an anger and an attitude, and it's scary. I'm including the shootings by cops. I think if I discovered that the Extremists were trying to provoke a race war, I would not be surprised.

by Anonymousreply 236April 19, 2023 2:06 PM

We know about these things only when they come in clusters. The girl that was killed in NY wouldn't have ever made it past her hometown news if the other incident hadn't happened. I think a lot of these things go on all the time but we just don't hear about them.

by Anonymousreply 237April 19, 2023 4:10 PM

I think the Texas cheerleaders/wrong car case would have flown under the radar as well.

by Anonymousreply 238April 19, 2023 4:38 PM

R237, and R 238, I half agree with you. Not disputing what you say, but here is something I have learned over the years and that is that our news gatherers, TV, print, etc, are unbelievably lazy. It used to be the local TV news editors. They chased stories they found from police scanners. You didn't get much real news locally. Just shootings robberies, home invasions.. And they covered local sports. For me, I gave up on local news except for traffic and weather. They subscribed to the "if it bleeds it leads." philosophy of journalism. But it seems like the national news has become a version of local. We get mayhem, but not too much else. And everything they report, whether it's about COVID, or guns or abortion rights or WTF ever is framed in the most alarming way possible.. If you remove the gun violence incidents, or the wars, you don't get much substance. Not saying things should not be covered. But devoting so much time to sensationall bullshit like Trump's plane on the tarmac waiting to take off for NYC for his indictment was pretty ridiculous and squandered so much time.

by Anonymousreply 239April 19, 2023 4:53 PM

I guess what I meant to say is that the media covers everything in a very superficial way, and hypes and sensationalizes everything.

by Anonymousreply 240April 19, 2023 4:55 PM

r239 I completely agree. I hate when there is a gun shooting not only because of the victims but because we are going to see it every night for a week. One night it is video we have not yet seen. Another night it is interviews with the people that knew the victims. Another night it is the 911 calls. There is no such thing as world news anymore. And the news itself, most of the time isn't news. They report only on things that will get them views. Famous people for the littlest thing, sports for the littlest thing and when did sports become world news unless it's a championship. We have to see every time a record is set or someone quits or someone is hired. I suppose this only matters to those of us that remember what real news reporting was like. Younger people don't watch the news or get whatever they are looking for online. I did notice how they keep trying to frighten everyone with everything.

by Anonymousreply 241April 19, 2023 5:06 PM

R236, the media is provoking racial tensions

by Anonymousreply 242April 19, 2023 6:03 PM

[quote]I'm including the shootings by cops

I'm not disagreeing with you, just piggybacking on your comment. If we didn't have so many damn guns in this country, cops wouldn't be shooting innocent teenagers when they see a cell phone in their hand and mistake it for a gun. I'm very opposed to the over militarization of the police force (I think I read two stories this week where police killed people because they went to the wrong house with a full swat team) but I understand how cops are afraid of encountering someone with a gun and then a terrible tragedy like that occurs. They're only human and trying to get though their day without getting killed themselves. I can't defend them when they kill a kid holding a phone. But I can see what the catalyst is.

by Anonymousreply 243April 19, 2023 7:15 PM

R241, pre-internet, reporters could wait, collect information, write their story, and then present it. But today with the Internet, there's so much misinformation that gets online, especially from the public, before reporters even have a chance to start their job. So it's not just a matter of getting the scoop first. They're also trying to provide information to counter what's already out there before the misinformation spreads. And because of that, they don't have the full story. They're reporting developing stories that change as more information comes out.

I'm saying what is the "Alka Seltzer tablet" that causes all these nut jobs to grab a gun and shoot people? by Anonymousreply 268April 20, 2023 7:16 PM

We have to deal wit hthe guns. We have to. But if we only deal with the guns it won't be enough. We have to deal with media in all its forms that incite and provoke violence. If we look to the UK, including Canada and Australia they enojy freedom of the press, etc. but they don't have this insane problem.

by Anonymousreply 269April 20, 2023 8:05 PM

I'll translate R260: You see, the shooter in that case is black and the white child was grazed and went home the same night from the hospital, thank goodness, but R260 would like you to believe it's the same thing as the black kid being shot in the head and that whites are always the ignored victims. I mean anyone who has watched the media over decades can see no one cares about white people, esp., white girls who go missing.

He seems to think every black person who gets shot gets a phone call from the WH. He's the kind of person who justifies George Floyd's death and thinks Ashli Babbit was a "tourist" and Kyle Rittenhouse killed a pedo so it's fine (no one knew he was a pedo), and the guy in TX who also likes to go after underage kids, should be pardoned by Abbott.

Yeah, no one cares about the little white children who get shot. Anyone could see that from the two black young men who got expelled speaking out on their behalf, R260?
