a large part of it was overexposure. She dipped into too much, too soon and spread her appeal too thin. Like she was trying to follow a disney formula, complete with pop music without actually being part of a major network, agent or body backing her and integrating all that shit into a coherent theme. It made her look desperate and not invested in building a solid brand. Also too much of her own fandoms clashed and that brought down her social networth. And for everyone else, she was a basic bitch... she didn't have a strong presence, identity, personality, so, it was like she was being forced upon the public -- that rarely works out well, even if said people can still be "successful"

When she transitioned into fraudom. The bullshit between TGW and Medium also didn't help - both attracted their audiences but there was a lot of chronic bullshit in the network war. Worse yet it gave validation to an Arquette. . . so, that baggage also got attached to her as well.

The Arquettes were like the proto-Kardashians, they existed in the sphere of celebrity but were desperate to be an old legacy family and whored themselves out at virtually every angle... pissing off many, many, many people along the way. So, even if she was on the opposite side of that in the network war, it was still giving power to that family... so, that stank got on her as well. . . and of course, they had their supporters, the medium fandom too, so, she was dead to most of them.

She didn't garner enough to be hated nor beloved. All her qualities would have worked if she was more of a bimbo but her archetype was the girl next door. . . and she didn't have enough to carry it. She wasn't plugged into any specific scene, she was all over the place. She was basic. Soft all the way around, no edge or rough spots. Generic.

She's not the best actress but she has her moments when she can be good sometimes. Like already mentioned in Heartbreakers and she gave a good, effective understated performance on Law & Order: SVU where she played a rape victim that became a recluse after being stalked and raped multiple times by her attacker. I was surprised. And the "name" guest stars on that show tend to chew the scenery.

And yeah, she hasn't had a bad career at all. I'm sure a lot of actresses (more talented ones included) wished they worked as much as she did. She's just not as high profile as she once was.

When I was 10, I used to watch Kids Incorporated just for her. I used to hate Eric Balfour and I was always paranoid that she was going to end up with him.

Years later, when I saw IKWYDLS at age 16, I was like, “OMG!! I remember her from Kids Incorporated!”

She and SMG were the girls I wanted to end up with when I was 17.

But I think the issue with JLH was she got a little over exposed. Her show “Time of Your Life” was probably the worst mistake of her life. It was not that great. It wasn’t a show about Sarah Reeves from “Party of Five,” it was a show about Jennifer Love Hewitt. It was to her career what Crossroads was to Britney’s career. “Look at me, I’m Jennifer Love Hewitt and I have all these guys fighting over me!” And then when she was playing Audrey Hepburn, you can see her thinking at the beginning of the film, “I am SO Audrey!!” Like, who did she think she was?

I think the problem with her was that she became a little too self-aware of how popular she was in 1999.

I don’t think she would have been as popular if she didn’t have Love for her middle name.

Limited talent; marketed on her looks, yet never wanted to show her tits or be sexy enough to capture a huge following; and finally, she aged out. If you have Meryl Streep talent, your looks don’t matter; if you have JLH talent, without your prime looks, you’ve got nothing.

She was the star of I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER and did a few more small studio films that didn't sell tickets. The sequel to SUMMER didn't do enough business to lead to a third. She either couldn't get cast or didn't work at getting into prestige movies that expanded how important directors thought about her in terms of casting.

She has worked in TV nonstop. She is likable. She is not a "movie star". Very few are. She is lucky to have a career where she has worked continuously for over 25 years and can still get cast, people still know who she is, and she can act whenever she wants.
