I think she should have scrapped the backup dancers and just been alone on the stage. If you can't afford to have a Rhythm Nation Army behind you, then either do like Prince and have a single dancer that is helping you tell the stories of the songs, or just skip it.

And then used that money for a cooler, more high-tech evolving set, a la Tyler the Creator. His last couple of tours have been stunning and exciting. Even though it's just my guy on stage alone for an hour and a half, the sets and lighting keeps morphing and evolving from song to song, so that by the time the concert is over it feels like you've gone on a whole journey with him. It's very dynamic and alive, and artistically rich.

There is no reason Janet couldn't have done something like that. Even a giant screen behind her projecting different filmic imagery created specially for the tour by some artsy fartsy filmmaker or graphics person would have been enough.

The most egregious aspect of this concert, by far, is the static lighting. My God it's lame. The lack of responsive lighting is what gives the concert the production values of a high school talent show. Skip the dancers, hire a lighting director and give the audience a fantastic light show that responds to the music in real time. If lighting is dynamic and you are putting energy into your own performance, no one would miss the backup dancers.

I saw Suzanne Vega the other night...nothing fancy.

The footage from this tour reminds me of the time I took my niece to see Vanessa Hudgens at the State Fair during the High School Musical days. The set consisted of a random stairway to nowhere in the middle of the stage. The music was pre-recorded and she lip synced. I believe there were a few dancers with her. It was fine for a state fair but make no mistake, there was no vision, no budget, and no effort put into the presentation.

I caught Prince on a similar tour in 1997. The "Jam of the Year World Tour." Probably the only tour in his entire life that he ever did that felt like a cash grab. Cheap set pieces, four styrofoam Doric greek columns and a stairway to nowhere and some fake plants. And medleys. I really hate medleys.

You go to these things excited, and then you walk away going "Okay, well. I guess now we can say that we have seen ______ in person, with our actual eyeballs." But it's not a standout memory. You walk away having a sense that this iconic wold-famous person is a mere mortal like the rest of us, with their bad days, their middle-aged spread, their achy back.
