A sinking network has to invest in their talent more than ever. She may or may not be the smartest choice. But for workers thinking that CNN is some kind of egalitarian workplace, they're in for disappointment. It's all about the talent. All too often the hardworking employees are too far down the priority list.

This is like when NBC gave Megyn Kelly a show, which immediately flopped and cancelled but they still had to pay her massive contract. Same thing will happen with Gayle. Nobody wants to see her with her glasses on the bridge of her nose being snide. She should just stick to eating out Oprah.

It does seem very silly to think Gayle King (or any journalist, probably) is worth that amount of investment. Why do TV executives make such stupid decisions?

Gayle King has been on TV news for eons and everyone knows her. 12 million is not outlandish if you want someone of her experience pulling double duty at two high profile jobs (she will never sleep if she takes this gig). They are paying Chris Wallace 6 million to tape a boring show that comes on once a week.

This is a weekly, not a daily show. Of course feathers are going to be ruffled. The network's star, Cooper, makes $15M/year for a daily show and 60 Minutes interviews plus taking off to natural disasters and mass shootings. Does seem a bit inequitable...

Isn't $12M less than what she's making at CBS? Gayle is really trying to burnish her resume by making the move to Primetime even if she has to do cable news first AND take a slight pay cut. She'll never be starving, broke, or homeless with multi-billionaire Oprah as her best friend.

Gayle is a newsreader. She doesn’t lift a finger to research or actually report. She reads off a teleprompter and gives her opinion on things. She used to be somewhat likeable, but her ego is swollen and she comes off as arch and (as r16 said) snide.

She’s going to be condescending to Barkley, so maybe that’s the draw? People want to see drama and fireworks?

Gayle attends lots of events and schmoozes around with those “women in media” orgs. She’s basically a socialite.

As they should be. I don't dislike Gayle and am in the CT market where she was a local anchor. Chris Licht doesn't seem to know what he is doing, and CNN has never been in worse shape. He seems to have no vision beyond a desire to bring the network to the center. This is fine, but his decisions seem to be random without a cohesive plan to improve viewership.

I have no idea why some of you always have to immediately put on your hoods when talking about black people, but I will agree with the rational posts that this is a horrible idea - if true, since it's Radar. I'm not sure who the audience is for a Gayle King/Charles Barkley show.

My only problem with Gayle back in the day was she couldn’t read the teleprompter without tripping over her words many many times. I don’t know if it was nervousness to a degree, but it could get really distracting.

I haven’t watched her in a long time so I don’t really have an opinion on how she comes across these days. I will say I have seen her interact with the public on 2 occasions—once at a movie theatre and once at a bookstore—and she was lovely. Very comfortable with her fame and adept at dealing with how people react to it, but still down to earth and nice to people. I’m just saying. I don’t think she’s a bad sort is my point. Whether she can pull in viewers for CNN will be interesting to see.

Charles Barkley is well liked in the sports media world. He's kind and can be funny. But I can't imagine him taking on politics to more than a surface level discussion. Gayle will insert herself as alpha - and he will let her.

Chris Licht soldiers on in his quest to make CNN unwatchable. Bill Maher was just the beginning. Fortunately for him, the only person more incompetent is MSNBC's Rashida Jones.

R52, I don’t think we’ve seen nearly as many headlines about problems at MSNBC as we’ve seen about CNN, so I’d say Chris is winning the race for worst network leader quite handily.

MSNBC has been dominating the ratings the past few weeks covering the Trump arrest and then the FOX trial - so they're doing something right. I believe Rachel has been winning her time slot over Hannity every Monday night - which is something to brag about.
