One of many creepy scenes. I’m still scratching my head over this film after 30 years.

Is Dean Stockwell a DL fave?

I've seen this movie so many times I'm always surprised when people call it weird or creepy - I processed it all ages ago and now find it kind of comforting. It's very funny. Sometimes I think it might be the greatest American movie. It captures the horror and perversion and also the simple beauty of this place maybe better than anything else I've ever seen.

This is my favorite movie.

R5 That was the point. It is a weird satire on the Reagan-era 1980's suburbia lifestyle.

American Beauty was the same way, "look closer."

American Beauty was overripe trash though. BV was on another level of satire and surrealism. So evocative and chilling.

The art direction and sound design alone are otherworldly.

R9 Ok, but it is a good analogy

I find this the most linear and cohesive of Lynch’s films. It’s still weird but it has a more straightforward structure than his other films.

The Criterion Blu Ray looks fantastic and has lots of bonus features including a bunch of deleted scenes.

and don't forget me

Was The Elephant Man the only film directed by Lynch that was a Best Picture nominee?

A Classic

I’d rather watch Dune.

and Dennis Hopper is fantastic

by Anonymousreply 16April 14, 2023 12:46 AM

[ R16 ] Yes, Hopper is indeed fantastic as is Dean Stockwell. The scene in which they brutalise Kyle MacLachlan in the seedy apartment is truly frightening.

Dean Stockwell singing In Dreams is creepy

There’s a fascinating documentary about Lynch currently on HBO Max. I think it’s called Art Life. In it, he tells a story about seeing a naked woman emerge from the darkness between houses when he was a child. He basically recreates that with Rossellini in Blue Velvet. It’s a really haunting and upsetting image.

by Anonymousreply 19April 14, 2023 9:56 PM

That is a horrible trailer, surely not the official one. But i love the movie, i was like fourteen and mesmerized, including by kyle’s magnificent ass. Bought and heard the soundtrack endlessly. Rosellini was wonderful. Mixes weirdness with a story preceding twin peaks and mulholland drive. It is a pity Lynch lost his way but we’ll still got blue velvet.
