A gaming site moderator, evidently

● The Washington Post traced the Pentagon papers leak to a man named OG on Discord.

● He was the leader of a group of young gamers who loved guns, military gear, and God, per the outlet.

● OG said he worked on a military base and sent his gamer friends hundreds of secrets, per WaPo.

The Washington Post has traced the recent Pentagon intelligence leak to a man who shared hundreds of secret files with a small group of young gamers on a private Discord server.

The unnamed man, nicknamed OG by the other server members, said he worked on a military base and claimed to know high-level government secrets withheld from the public, two unnamed group members told The Post.

Their invite-only server on Discord — a messaging and voice chat platform for gamers — had around two dozen male members worldwide who shared a passion for guns, military gear, and God, The Post reported.

As early as 2020, OG began sending the classified information to his Discord server, which was once named "Thug Shaker Central," per The Post.

OG, the server's administrator, expected the group's members to pay close attention to the flood of information he fed them, one of the two young Discord users told The Post.

"He's fit. He's strong. He's armed. He's trained. Just about everything you can expect out of some sort of crazy movie," the member said.

But at the time, OG was only sharing his own rewritten transcripts of the documents, hand-typing them with annotations, one of the Discord members told The Post. The transcripts were extensive and contained information such as the locations of top politicians and military secrets, the outlet reported.

Then in late 2022, OG became irate with the gamers for not paying attention to the secrets he shared and started sending photographs of the actual documents instead, per The Post. Furniture and household items like Gorilla Glue and nail clippers can be seen in some of his images, offering potential clues that might help authorities track him down, The Post reported.

The Post reviewed around 300 photos of classified documents, some of which have yet to be made public. An estimated 100 intelligence files have been discovered on the internet so far.

Dozens of the sensitive documents from OG's "Thug Shaker Central" Discord server eventually emerged on Russian Telegram channels and 4Chan forums in late March and early April, when authorities first became aware of the leak.

The photos had earlier circulated on several Discord servers, making their way from "Thug Shaker Central" to another server founded by YouTuber Wow_Mao in March, Bellingcat analyst Aric Toler reported.

And at least 10 documents were later sent to another Discord server dedicated to the video game "Minecraft," Toler reported. It was there that the files gained wider attention, per Toler.

After The New York Times reported on the leak on April 7, OG told everyone in Thug Shaker Central to delete messages that he sent them, as well as the classified information he had been sharing, per The Post.

"He said something had happened, and he prayed to God that his event would not happen," one of the young Discord members told The Post.

The members of his group "full-on sobbed and cried" as though they were "losing a family member," the Discord member said, per The Post.

The "Thug Shaker Central" server has been deleted, Bellingcat reported.

Traitor. He needs to be found and imprisoned for a long time.

by Anonymousreply 1April 13, 2023 9:33 AM

He's religious i.e. mentally ill. Probably needs to be tied to a stretcher in a psychiatric ward.

It won't happen; Biden like Obama is weak as water on such things, more so if suspect is a trans, black or brown person, a minority; something or anything they can plead caused them to suffer some sort of harm in past (actual or not).

by Anonymousreply 8April 13, 2023 10:56 AM

Is it legit?

It's not the first time leaks akin to this has happened, then later shown to be orchestrated. . . to be released to press and force a situation.

Some rando running off crude copies or reproduced my memory state secrets makes for entertainment but it's too random. . . and given the groups they're trying to suggest was involved. These aren't quiet people that would keep info on the downlow for months. They would have setup multiple databases by now.

So, who would most gain?

You'd have to consider the multiple factions in the state, different branches of govt, current and past administrations, international bodies, alliances, social politics/pop culture domestic and abroad, international negotiations/agreements/deals, whatever.

I'm tired. But it should make an entertaining distraction. . . one should take into account the problems with some of our branches in the last fews decade, particularly in the way of information security and the press. Internal leaks.

by Anonymousreply 9April 13, 2023 10:57 AM

r8 hearsay. no one reports how religious. Random elements are thrown in and left to the public to fill in the blanks with the associations.

though, If one goes down the rabbit hole of associations, their associated cliques place them in pacific islander category or associated (military), greater likelihood of lapsed catholic

but still only reported reference is the kind of a thing even an atheist would say.

by Anonymousreply 10April 13, 2023 11:04 AM

R9, you get one Russian in that gamer group to goad a low level military clerk into yielding any documents they can, manipulating their stupidity, "no, you don't have access to anything, you're a liar! You're not important!" and he'll yield.

by Anonymousreply 12April 13, 2023 11:07 AM

My friends, religious is code for stupid here.

by Anonymousreply 13April 13, 2023 11:08 AM

From the description I'd guess he's a MAGA Trumper doing his part to help Russia and hurt the US and Ukraine.

by Anonymousreply 14April 13, 2023 11:12 AM

Oh I don't know....

They've still not found who in government released those IRS files to Washington Post. Nor for that matter has that infamous leak from SCOTUS been solved either.

Sadly many at higher levels of government or even industry are simply clueless. An 9 year old script kid knows more about tech than some of these persons who are highly compensated to keep on top of things.

But then again that FB employee who was on her way out managed to download a fuck ton of documents (that she since released to media, government or anyone else who cared to see), with no one internally not picking up on her accessing files she shouldn't.

by Anonymousreply 15April 13, 2023 11:13 AM

R15, the scotus brief is largely believed to be an Alito clerk, as a tactic to force Kavanaugh's hand in case he wavered.

by Anonymousreply 16April 13, 2023 11:15 AM

They know who leaked the SCOTUS stuff, they just don't want to punish that person. Which means it's the son/daughter of somebody "important" or someone who is fucking someone important. They're just going to pretend it never happened.

by Anonymousreply 17April 13, 2023 11:41 AM

Oh, but Dump was strong in that department, huh, R3? Just the Democats are weak? Fuck outta here, cunt.

by Anonymousreply 19April 13, 2023 11:59 AM

No, I don't think so.

Collective wisdom is leak came from one of the justices themselves, hence reason investigation went no where.

If indeed deed was done by a SCOTUS justice all hell would break loose.

by Anonymousreply 29April 13, 2023 1:05 PM

If this much is known, the FBI/CIA are already following and stalking the guy in real life already. He's fucked.

by Anonymousreply 30April 13, 2023 1:17 PM

This is the complete Washington Post article. OG is a religious gun nut, probably a racist, who leaked the documents to what was, essentially, his online fan club. He wanted friendship and validation. He apparently did not intend for the documents to go further, but the gamer group was infiltrated by someone who began posting them on other sites.

Here's a reality check for the intelligence agencies: Perhaps if you didn't spend decades demonizing everyone who wasn't a white, heterosexual Christian, you wouldn't have raised generations of entitled, white, heterosexual Christians who turn on the country when their sense of entitlement is challenged. Perhaps you could actually recruit brilliant, non-white, non-Christian people to work for the various agencies if they actually saw you all as genuinely trying to preserve American democracy for *all*.

by Anonymousreply 72April 13, 2023 7:55 PM

Other intelligence detailed qualms among South Korean officials about a US request for Seoul to send ammunition that Washington would then send on to Kyiv.

It's scary how easy it is to access these national/internationally important classified documents. For these kids, it's not hard to crack the code with their second nature of technology. They were born into it and are more savvy than the so-called "tech experts" protecting sensitive government documents. It's hard to keep up with the newest updates, as it changes so fast. Even with that, these kids know how to get around it.

I am not surprised at all. A friend’s son, who is about this young man’s age, is in the Navy and because he’s tech savvy he’s been put in charge of a lot of communications. He’s a good person and would never tell anyone, including his mother, the derails of what he sees. But from speaking to her he has expressed 1) boredom that he’s just being used for his existing IT skills and not trained to learn new things. 2) difficulty processing things he doesn’t want to know.

These IT kids are treated like widgets and aren’t screened the way the intended recipients of the information are, but they still see everything and to the extent that they can re-set passwords they can wind up seeing more things then the generals.

Of note:

[quote]According to The Times, “members of Thug Shaker Central” told the newspaper that “the documents they discussed online were meant to be purely informative.” They told The Times they “took no side in the conflict,” the newspaper reported.

Just a right wing, typically racist, unadjusted kid who wanted to impress his buds. The same small group of buds he's been gaming with since before and throughout the pandemic.

A tight knit group of a dozen or so guys all bored with life and basically only lived/loved to hang and game with their little click or tough teens who gamed hours and hours each day.

Tiexera was the older brother, smart, demanding, very fit, and very conservative. He desperately needed to keep his flock of kids impressed and he did it by showing off the ultimate way he could. Divulging super secret docs.

I doubt he viscously shared the docs and never thought about the risk, but just wanted to show off his access. Now he's shaking in his boots.

by Anonymousreply 155April 14, 2023 12:05 AM

There's no question that Putin is sick, terminally so. The 'rumor' is regarding how tenuous his grip on his own government might be, and whether officials would take advantage of his diminished capacity to 'throw' the war.

From the WaPo article at R181:

[quote]The friend recalled that Teixeira started sharing classified documents on the Discord server around February 2022, at the beginning of the war in Ukraine, which he saw as a “depressing” battle between “two countries that should have more in common than keeping them apart.”

One wonders what Teixeira would have made of Hitler taking over the Sudetenland, Austria, etc.

[quote]Around half of the server’s members were “kids in their basements” playing video games, while the other half were gun enthusiasts, the friend said. Recent claims by others who were on the server that some of its members were Russian and Ukrainian were “pure fabrication,” the friend said. One member pretending to be a Russian naval officer actually lived in Kentucky, he said, and was kicked out.

Well, regardless, the documents got into the hands of real Russians somehow, didn't they?

[quote]Other members of Teixeira’s server have showed The Post video of Teixeira shouting racist and antisemitic slurs before firing a rifle and said he referenced government raids at Ruby Ridge in Idaho and in Waco, Tex. — events with deep resonance among right-wing, anti-government extremists.

An indicator that he was not as a-political and impartial as some have made out. That's hardcore Stormfront/MAGAt territory.

Our entire gov't. needs revamped. Until Trump we had no idea how corrupt our system had become which unfortunately is the reason he won. We needed to see what was going on so we could fix it.

We need to update the constitution. It is ridiculous that we are trying to live by what was written over 200 years ago while the world is not even remotely the same as it was.

We need to do something about the fraud of our gov't. They don't have enough money to hire people to watch after the money and investigate it when something is wrong but we have enough to lose billions after billions in fraud.

We don't need a new system, we just need to fix everything that is broken.

IMO, the most patriotic people that the military can recruit are immigrants. Those people flee oppression, injustice and violence from their native country and appreciate the values of this country as opposed to those entitled, selfish white males. by Anonymousreply 236April 14, 2023 10:59 PM

Yes, R228 online gaming has always had a large racist and right-wing contingent. They're certainly not all like that, but it's definitely how lots of young guys get influenced. It's disturbing to be on a co-op game (usually first-person shooters), and hear kids who haven't gone through puberty trying to talk tough with constant profanity and racist comments.

by Anonymousreply 237April 14, 2023 10:59 PM

Here’s a thought, the military shouldn’t put young men without fully developed frontal lobes in charge of the communication systems that transmit highly classified documents. Oh and their screening should as extensive as the intended recipients of those documents. And since they are seeing those documents without the the context the intended recipients have they should receive some sort of counseling.

I hate to sound sympathetic the a MAGAt-y criminal, racist jerk, but letting a 21 year alone (as young as 17 in the job description) see those documents is like giving a two year old a gun.

I'm not EL, but if Jack is a right-wing Catholic who spends this much time gaming and stealing and disseminating classified material, he's likely voluntarily celibate and heavily in denial and sublimating any sexual urges. How did journalists find Jack Teixeira before the FBI?

[quote]The FBI has unrestricted authority to monitor social media and chat rooms but failed to spot the leaked Pentagon documents, a veteran agent has told The Times. The fact that months passed before it became aware of classified documents on Discord and other social media has raised concerns about its ability to keep watch on public and private internet sites that might breach national security.

[quote]“FBI authority to monitor social media was expanded significantly after the 9/11 attacks in 2001. There is no limit on it scouring social media activity although the rules are more complicated when dealing with private forums.” Michael German, who was an undercover FBI special agent for 16 years said.

[quote]“The FBI employs private companies to do widespread social media checks under contracts worth millions of dollars but often they seem to focus on protest groups, like environmental and political activists,” German said. There was plenty of evidence in social media about the planning for the assault on the Capitol, and yet the authorities “appeared unprepared” for what happened, he added. “Either the contracted companies were looking at the wrong things or the FBI ignored them.”

The FBI won’t hire anyone over 35, either. The CIA recruits on college campuses.

by Anonymousreply 284April 15, 2023 4:54 PM

R280 thanks for that. Obviously the FBI are totally stoopid; then belatedly, to look tough, they turned up with a highly armed platoon in desert fatigues, with two armored cars to arrest a twink who they forced to walk backwards into their arms. J Edgar Hoover is a-turning in his casket.

The thread title "A gaming site moderator, plainly" doesn't make sense, r282.

And, no, evidently and apparently don't mean exactly the same thing. Evidently as used in the title implies "of course it was a gaming site moderator".

by Anonymousreply 290April 16, 2023 1:41 PM

R290 There was evidence that it was a gaming site moderator. The OP's title is correct even if you don't like it.

by Anonymousreply 291April 16, 2023 1:45 PM

Evidently doesn't actually mean "there is evidence for", r291, but anyway.

by Anonymousreply 292April 16, 2023 1:47 PM

R292 What does clearly, plainly mean? It means that there's evidence for it otherwise it would not be clear.

by Anonymousreply 293April 16, 2023 1:49 PM

"Evidently" is perfectly correct in OP's title, as a disjunct, the equivalent of "as is evident" (as "apparently" would mean "as is apparent"). The two words aren't exact equivalents, to be sure, but there's plenty of overlap and the former makes perfect sense in this case. I suspect R281 etc. is not a native English speaker.

by Anonymousreply 294April 16, 2023 3:06 PM

Evidently implies something that was obvious and had been confirmed, rather than completely new information. Apparently would have been more appropriate for the title.

by Anonymousreply 295April 16, 2023 4:10 PM

Apparently also means “well, it looks that way.”

by Anonymousreply 296April 16, 2023 4:14 PM

Apparently, as shown by the evidence we currently have, a gaming site moderator is the traitor.

Billions of taxpayer dollars go to the military but they cannot safeguard their top secret military documents like private companies can?

by Anonymousreply 300April 18, 2023 7:45 AM

Don’t break the glass R300!

Seriously though you do realize the IT guys can just watch you look at patient records? Even in a healthcare setting one of IT’s job is to monitor employee use of the computers. Surely you remember signing off on a waiver about no expectation of privacy when using employee computer systems. IT doesn’t need to break the glass. They can just wait for you to do it because the VIP is your patient.

by Anonymousreply 302April 18, 2023 1:38 PM

Looking back at Bradley Manning, he held top-secret security clearance and “sensitive compartmentalized information” clearance, according to a CNN article. Top secret is a lower clearance level, while SCI-level information is on a “need to know” basis that may require codes to access.

At the time of his case there were four million people with security clearances.
