1, There is no such person as "Princess Di"
2. Neither Diana Spencer's niece nor her husband are "royal" nor have place in succession. Spencer family aren't heirs of Electress Sophia thus have no place in BRF nor inline to inherit throne. Diana's sons and heirs of their body begotten from lawful marriage are another matter.

For ages prior to WWI Germany was where BRF, members of peerage and many others went in search of marriage partners, especially if search was narrowed to those of Protestant faith. Same was true of Russia and few other areas of Europe.
South African society was often considered nouveau riche and rather louche early on, that obviously has changed.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | April 12, 2023 12:08 AM |
Greg Mallett is rather dishy, you've got to admit that..
by Anonymous | reply 39 | April 12, 2023 12:09 AM |
I assume he comes from money, his uncle was a famous rugby player, his grandfather was a famous cricket player and headmaster of the old school Anglican boarding school in Cape Town, where Viscount Spencer the actor, went.
I think it makes sense she married a South African, she and her siblings all grew up there before and after their parents divorced.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | April 12, 2023 12:09 AM |
Also: the husband looks like he could be Colton Underwood’s brother.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | April 12, 2023 12:10 AM |
In case anyone wondered, Lady Amelia may continue using her title even after marriage.
When daughter of a peer marries a man without status or title she may continue using her courtesy rank derived from the father. While her children will still be dead common at least woman in question will still be addressed as "Lady"
Think "Lady Marjorie" from Upstairs/Downstairs who married Richard Bellamy.
Back when monarchs had more say in awarding peerages if the daughter in question was close to BRF or maybe her father or both parents were husband in question might be given something to raise him up thus move lady in question from being a daughter of peer to wife. This and of course her children would now also have titles.

r19: Your consistent uptightness about the names of princesses and their relatives is probably the prissiest OCD single thing I've ever seen on datalounge in my twenty years here.
No one is required to refer to Diana by her correct titles except protocol experts or the Court Circular. We can call her Pinrcess Di or Princess Diana or Diana Spencer or just Diana or Lady Di or whatever we feel like calling her. If you don;t like that, tough shit!
Please take the opportunity to UNCLENCH before your sphincter collapses in upon itself into a black hole of rigid prissiness.

South Africa and India were historically two top destinations for middle class British went to make their mark upon the world so to speak. Civil servants, current or former military...
Much of this came at expense of exploiting native populations (all those plantations, mines, etc... needed cheap labor), and so on.
In India at least best example would be the fictional Layton family in "Jewel In The Crown" and their social set. These people were largely nobodies in England. Some had military or civil service rank, but still weren't anything in England. However in India (or South Africa) things could be different.

The Viscount, who recently graduated from acting school, is a full brother to all three sisters. The young twink is a half brother — same mother, different fathers. The kids better watch out, or their father could leave everything to the newest wife — palace, money, etc. Only the Viscount will keep his inheritance — his titles. There are no rules that say the estate has to be left to the heir of the titles.

R76, Earl Spencer has already stated that Louis will inherit the estate, following family tradition that has gone back generations.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | April 13, 2023 12:04 AM |
I’m sure that for tax purposes the Earl of Spencer doesn’t even own Althorp. It’s certainly held in a trust administered by a board, of which the current Earl is Chairman, but with no more ability to sell up than Charles could sell Windsor.
By most accounts, there wasn’t much money. Supposedly Lady Raine was selling off furniture to make much needed repairs on the house. Diana’s gravesite visitors have given a new lease on life to the house and it will survive but Diana’s brother has about as much ownership over the estate now as any leaseholder.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | April 13, 2023 2:17 AM |
There is money, but fo you know how much a place like Althorp costs to maintain? Just a new roof is in the millions.
And yes, the Earl could sell the place, and any of its contents.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | April 13, 2023 2:54 AM |
The Spencers (Diana's father and Raine) did make repairs, but her wretched taste is all over Althorp. You can immediately tell which rooms she redid- gaudy and reeking of gold leaf. Raine's portrait is embarrassing.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | April 13, 2023 3:44 AM |
In common with many other peers Earl Spencer recently held an auction of various items from estate to raise ready money.
With days of fee entail as many knew it prior to WWI gone families through the years have sold off tons of art, furnishings, jewels, etc.. a sorts of moveable objects in aid of raising much needed funds. This either for repairs/renovations and or to pay death taxes.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | April 13, 2023 8:54 AM |
Yes, as noted above in common with many other families Althorp Estate has trusts set up to manage various assets, but more importantly to minimize taxes, especially death duties. This is common across UK and USA as well, nothing shocking or new.
Spencer House in London for instance while still property of family per se has been let on very long term lease.

"Earl Spencer has already stated that Louis will inherit the estate, following family tradition that has gone back generations."
Unless Louis Spencer turns out to be homosexual and refuses to marry a woman (thus no possibility of legal heirs for estate purposes) cannot see Earl Spencer denying his son his birthrights so to speak.
