Anyone watching? This Argentinian telenovela has a gay storyline and it's well worth the watch. For once the gay characters are the protagonists, and since this telenovela is Argentinian they even get to kiss!
New gay storyline: Argentina, Tierra de Amor y Venganza

Spain and Latin America are seemingly providing so much better gay content these days.

R1 Yes indeed. In general I would say Spanish and Latin American storylines are better than American (though there are exceptions). Homophobes are everywhere though, including Argentina. The first episode opened with a gay kiss and many didn't like it. The homophobic comments on this insta post make me sad.

Behind the scenes of the kiss in the first episode.

Turns out the actor who plays Antonio (Toni Gelabert) is gay in real life. Here he is with his boyfriend. It's good that a gay actor plays a gay character.

The boyfriend plays Marcos.. They shared a few scenes in the new episode.

Almost kiss between Antonio and Marcos. I wish they had kissed😢

Apparently you can find English translations here.

Ugh... these past few episodes have been shit. No wonder the novela is struggling with viewership. I'm so disappointed because the first episode was so strong. But after then it's basically gone downhill. I know it's still early, and with this being a novela I really shouldn't expect too much, but the writing (except for the first episode) has been atrocious. Why would someone who is as free as Antonio pretend to have a girlfriend? I know he's not out, but he isn't really hiding being attracted to men either, it's just not spoken of. So then... why write him as pretending to have a girlfriend? He should be written as openly gay, having a boyfriend, and not being afraid to say so to the bigots. It would also move thing along with Segundo, because Segundo knows he isn't into women. I feel it's out of character for Antonio to do this. Also... since the gay kiss in the first episode there has been one almost gay kiss between Antonio and Marcos (I still don't get why he pulled back from it?) but then... nothing. In fact there were several straight kisses, between Antonio and his fake girlfriend and between Segundo and Pilar. Another thing that doesn't make sense is why Antonio is pining for Segundo when Segundo constantly rejects him? He should be proud enough to say fuck off. He has an alternative love interest who is totally into him, aka Marcos. Why is he spending so much time pining for Segundo when Marcos, who is hot and into him, is right there? Segundo is basically treating him like shit, yet Marcos is so nice to him. I understand Antonio is in love, band love makes one blind, but he shouldn't let a guy walk all over him. He should just say enough is enough. The writing has been sub-par since the first episode, which is too bad, because it started so strong. Oh well... we can always hope it'll improve, but I know the novela is already struggling with viewership, and I can understand why.

Someone is finally upoading their storyline, no English subs so far though, sorry.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | April 15, 2023 11:29 AM |
Behind the scenes. Toni and Santi talk about the almost kiss and possible more kisses in the future.

This show is a good show.
Chilean actor Benjamin Vicuña who has played gay characters twice. Appeared in the first series of this show although he didn't play a gay character on the show.

How long does this novela run?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 16, 2023 6:05 AM |
R12 Thanks, that's interesting. Yes, this is a good show. I'm just sad that the ratings are bad. I wonder if it's because of the gay storyline. I swear 90 % of the comments on Toni and Santi's real life relationship are homophobic. Turns out Argentina might not be as progressive as originally thought. I want to add that although episode 1 was excellent (and I don't use this word about tv shows often), the following episodes have been kinda bad. It's too slowgoing and the writing for Antonio in particular doesn't make any sense. Why would someone as free as Antonio pretend to have a girlfriend? Also, there have been no gay kisses since the first episode, the closest we got was the almost kiss between Antonio and Marcos. There have been several straight kisses though, of course, even between the gay characters and women. I hate when soaps do this. It's such an old and tired trope. Anyway, I'll continue to watch hoping it gets better.

R13 I have no idea. Novelas usually have between like 70 and 100 episodes. If this has 100 then it will run for several months, almost half a year. What's worrying is that the show is doing badly with ratings, so we are risking them cutting out whole episodes, or worse, the channel might pull the soap all together if the ratings don't improve.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | April 16, 2023 6:13 AM |
R16 I know about Argentine history. What many don't want to acknowledge is that many nazis fled Germany for Argentina. Maybe that explains why they are still so homophobic.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | April 16, 2023 6:36 AM |
According to the last Pew Research poll, 76% of Argentines say homosexuality should be accepted by society, while 72% of Americans think the same. It hardly seems a nazi homophobic paradise.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | April 16, 2023 6:50 AM |
R18 That is good news, but I get an entirely different picture from reading the facebook comments. I'm not exaggerating when I say 90 % are homophobic. Go and read them if you don't believe me. Do a search for Toni Gelabert, go to the comments about their relationship. The comments make me lose all faith in humanity.

I posted this on the other thread, but I might as well post it here too. I fucking hate them for being so cute.

R13 One of the guys here says it's 60 episodes, I don't know if that is correct or not though. Seems a bit short as the first season had like 200, but what do I know. If 60 is correct then it will last for about 3 months.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | April 16, 2023 8:11 AM |
R13 This article has the number of episodes at 125. That sounds right, because as I said the first season had 200. The novela will last for about 6 months then, if that number is correct.

The first series which is set in the 1930s during the Spanish civil war and immigration to Argentina also had a gay storyline. R14
Originally the second series was supposed to be set in the 1960s.

Where can one watch this -- with or without subtitles?
by Anonymous | reply 24 | April 16, 2023 3:35 PM |
R24 Someone is uploading the storyline. I posted a link to part 1. No English subs yet though.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | April 17, 2023 5:25 AM |
R24 Here is the first episode of the second season. I have to warn you though, the ratings are terrible so don't get too attached as the novela risks getting cancelled.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | April 17, 2023 5:30 AM |
R23 I know. I wonder if that's why the ratings are so bad. They had to move up the timeline because most actors were not returning for the second season. People expected to follow the lives of Argentinians in the 60s, with the same characters as season 1. Now they have to deal with new characters as most of the old ones are not returning. Also, the material would have been jucier if it was set in the 60s instead of the 80s. Costumes etc all would have been better. On the flip side, the gay storyline might not have been as good as it is now, as I doubt a story set in the 60s would have had gay characters as protagnoists.

Good news: they are FINALLY dropping the fake girlfriend storyline, as Antonio says he is gay and into Segundo in the preview for the episode tonight. Bad news: Pedro, Antonio's dad, is shot. He will probably die because apparently the actor is only credited as "guest". I hope this does't devastate Antonio. It would be bad if Antonio spirals, then pretending to be straight again. On the other hand there's also the possibility of him realizing life is short and instead of chasing Segundo he should actually be with someone who actually wants him, like Marcos.

Antonio finally admits to Segundo that he likes guys and that he likes him. They also talk about AIDS in this episode, with this being set in the 80s it makes sense.

R12 one of those times Benjamin Vicuña played a gay character was in a show called Farsantes. I wish he had played a gay character in the first season of Argentina, tierra de amor y venganza.

Not a lot of gay stuff happening this week, as Antonio's dad was shot dead, so the story will be about that. At least the people who complained about the show being boring can stop complaing now, that's something I guess. Also, I think the actor did a great job with those scenes. I know this is the actor's first big project, so it's kinda noticable at times. He's not terrible, but he's not great either. Tato is the better actor imo. Anyways, he has improved some, so that's good. Hopefully he will improve more as the show goes on.

Edu, Walter's boyfriend, clearly has AIDS. Segundo thought he saw a spot on his neck, that's why he kept looking. Later he coughs when he talks to Antonio. I'm actually fine with some of the minor gay characters dying, as I think it's necessary and important to tell the story of AIDS. They better not kill off Antonio or Segundo though, preferably not Marcos either. I'm scared Marcos becomes colleteral damage though, hence why he'll end up with Segundo. I also know Toni (who plays Antonio) was reshooting some scenes the other day. They better not cut the gay scenes or I'm gonna have a fit! Seriously, if they cave to the homophobes I will be pissed. Who knows though... maybe they changed the ending from Antonio ending up with Segundo to him ending up with Marcos, since the actors are dating in real life. They also got the award for best couple at the wrap party.

Is nobody watching? The start was slow (so I can see why it'a struggling in the ratings), but a lot has happened. Antonio's dad was shot. The new episode had the funeral. There was a wonderful flashback to Antonio coming out to his dad in 1981. I'm glad we got to see that because I always wondered if he was out to him, but it's obvious he is. Edu, Walter'a boyfriend, is getting sicker. The scene in the new episode was heartbreaking. Edu was so scared. He knew what was about to happen to him. Last but not least, Segundo gave Antonio a hug. Next episode it looks like they're about to kiss. I'm happy something is finally happening on the gay front.

This was a great scene. Antonio came out to his dad.

I cannot believe they removed a gay kiss from episode 14. Shame.

Anyone still watching?

So Segundo went to confession and confessed to being of a "different nature" because he's in love with a man(Antonio). Segundo's wife fucked another man in order to get pregnant again and keep Segundo trapped after she miscarried again and didn't tell him.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | June 15, 2023 6:11 PM |
You could see in one of there recent episodes r38, the jealousy on Segundo's face as he watched Marcos kissing Tony. Obviously wishing that it was him instead of Marcos.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | June 15, 2023 9:16 PM |
I know r39. After what recently happened with Antonio. Segundo was real close to expressing his feelings for Antonio before he was interrupted. Marcos also told Segundo to stay away from Antonio.
That's from Botineras r40. Also a good Argentine show.

Looks like Antonio and Marcos are over.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | June 22, 2023 9:17 AM |
Segundo and Antonio had sex and there was a little bit of grinding.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | June 22, 2023 3:26 PM |
I saw that r43. Tony was really horny and ready to fuck. Segundo finally admitting to Tony that he wanted to be with him. Only for it to all come crashing down just as they were about to fuck for the second time. The homophobic priest blaming Segundo for the loss of the baby because of his "sinful" actions of having feelings for man. Now you have the wife begging Segundo to never leave her again and him agreeing because of his feeling guilty over being with Tony and happy while his wife was at the hospital losing the baby.
