Plus Size country superstar Luke Combs is covering Black lesbian icon Tracy Chapman's Fast Car

Do his fans know who sang this song originally?

A song that really didn't need to be redone.

by Anonymousreply 1April 10, 2023 3:34 AM

Exactly, r1... and especially from the male POV.

by Anonymousreply 2April 10, 2023 3:39 AM

No ONE should EVER cover Fast Car - except 25 year old Bruce Springsteen.

It's not just a song - it's millions of Black people's truth and lives. That song is magic. Hard magic.

If you're gonna cover Tracy Chapman - be like Kelly C.

Do any of his non-fans know who he is? Serious question.

by Anonymousreply 4April 10, 2023 4:10 AM

R2 Actually, he didn’t change the pronouns so, it’s still from the female perspective. One of my favorite songs-I expected to hate this cover but it’s quite lovely.

I like the song too. Chapman's original is iconic, but Combs cover is very good, too.

by Anonymousreply 6April 11, 2023 1:20 AM

His cover is #2 in all the land.

Nobody could ever touch Tracy Chapman's original version of Fast Car, which of course she also wrote. That song is a work of art.

by Anonymousreply 8June 29, 2023 2:45 AM

Speaking of Tracy Chapman, her last album was in 2008. I wonder why she hasn’t released new music.

by Anonymousreply 9June 29, 2023 2:50 AM

Not bad at all, though, hearing the beefy Combs refer to himself a check-out girl is a bit much.

by Anonymousreply 10June 29, 2023 3:01 AM

Plus Size🤣😁

by Anonymousreply 11June 29, 2023 3:27 AM

His version hasn’t an ounce of soul to it. Adds nothing, feels like a costume compared to Tracy’s place of truth. But she’s gotta be making bank off it, so there’s that.

You children are so prejudicial! His cover of this song is excellent! Brings a different sound and a different dimension. There are millions of white people stuck in poverty as well, under educated, living rural areas and and working in some go nowhere jobs for subsistence wages, that this song rings true about that experience. I'm in 200% agreement Tracy Chapman's version is iconic but this one is good too.

by Anonymousreply 13June 29, 2023 3:47 AM

I didn't recognize some of the lyrics. Has he added lines? Or am I just forgetful?

I like his version. But hers will always be the one I hear in my head.

He’s giving her reparations via royalties. 👸🏾

by Anonymousreply 15June 29, 2023 3:51 AM

Bunch of idiots, what happens is not only will she make money but people will discover her music, nothing to complain about here except from Yassss Kweens who need deconstruct everything wypipo do and make it seem evil.

by Anonymousreply 16June 29, 2023 3:53 AM

I agree with R13.

He has a fabulous voice. I'm bowled over by it, actually. Hints of George Strait and George Jones. Classic.

Further to y post above, here's a great song of his from February.

The song's lyrics are SO bleak. I'm surprised everyone likes hearing it now considering he didn't even change the pronoun. It's weird, I'll say that. The production needs to be a bit looser and musical, but I have no quibbles about his voice.

by Anonymousreply 20June 29, 2023 4:54 AM

I actually like it but the "Checkout girl" thing does sound weird with a country and western male twang 🥴

by Anonymousreply 21June 29, 2023 6:53 AM

I first heard Fast Car when I was 8 or 9 and every part of my gayling self instantly loved the song. On some deep level I didn't even know existed. It was so melancholic. So working class. So honest. So hopeful and hopeless at the same time.

One of the best songs ever written, I contend. Sung perfectly.

This is a totally serviceable cover. But it lacks that magic of Tracy's yearning vocals.

There is a live performance video of his singing Fast Car on YouTube. The crowd was receptive and appreciative. However, I got the notion that they approached it as a sing-along party song, disregarding the lyrics that speaks of the despair and struggle of alcoholism. Nonetheless, I like his version as well as the original.

by Anonymousreply 23July 1, 2023 3:49 PM

we did an 8 ball and listened to the album a million times that night.

by Anonymousreply 24July 1, 2023 4:12 PM

Wait..did he call hisself a "checkout GIRL"? DID HE GO WOKE? I got to go check the Facebook to see how I feel about this!

by Anonymousreply 25July 1, 2023 4:16 PM

The Combs version of Fast Car hit number one on the country charts making Chapman the first black woman to have a number one country song as a sole writer.

Tracey likes counting the $$$ Luke is making for her.

She counts it in between box munching sessions.
