Best Thing to Put You to Sleep

Ambien, melatonin, or Norah fucking Jones?

Damn she's the most boring thing in the world.

She just sang a Beach Boys song on the special that's on CBS about them right now. I think she killed three of the remaining Beach Boys that are there by putting them into irrecoverable comas.

by Anonymousreply 82May 18, 2023 7:08 AM

She used the drug Brucine, which cannot be detected in the bloodstream after 12 hours, to put them into their irreversible comas.

by Anonymousreply 1April 10, 2023 1:38 AM

Norah Jones was playing the morning my mother died.

by Anonymousreply 2April 10, 2023 1:39 AM

Are you saying Norah Jones killed your mother, R2? It’s plausible.

by Anonymousreply 3April 10, 2023 1:41 AM

No, Norah didn't kill but perhaps finished her off.

by Anonymousreply 4April 10, 2023 1:46 AM

After drinking some water so I'm not parched and peeing before bed, I like to use some lavender essential oil and listen to Sade or Anita Baker softly playing in a dark room before nodding off on a cool pillow beneath a blanket that is just the right thickness and breathability.

by Anonymousreply 5April 10, 2023 1:46 AM

30mg of Delta 9 via edible.

by Anonymousreply 6April 10, 2023 1:47 AM

NPR podcasts work like a charm.

by Anonymousreply 7April 10, 2023 1:48 AM

A Victorian novel on your Kindle.

by Anonymousreply 9April 10, 2023 1:55 AM

R8 CBN with the Delta 9 FTW

by Anonymousreply 10April 10, 2023 2:01 AM

You jest, R7, but it does work. My NPR station switches to BBC at night and their features about daffodil gardening just knock me out.

by Anonymousreply 11April 10, 2023 2:02 AM

R7 What are you talking about? They make me stay up all night.

by Anonymousreply 12April 10, 2023 2:05 AM

Raintree County, 1957

She wasn't that bad.

OP, try the Calm app. I love the stories and the soundscapes.

Sleep studies at Stanford University confirm that some kind of sound machine (falling rain is popular) and a weighted blanket are highly effective.

I don't have any problems falling asleep but I can't sleep more than 6 hours or so. I used to sleep soundly for 7.5 to 8. All the sleep advice is for falling asleep but seldom find useful advice for getting enough sleep.

by Anonymousreply 20April 10, 2023 3:02 AM

This.

I fell asleep in film class watching this. Of course my instructor was pissed because my snoring was really loud.

I've attempted to watch this film three times to no avail. But the fourth time I stuck it through. It's a great story and a classic.

#MeToo. It's called getting old. I wake up and not just cause I have to pee. Just be ready to fall back asleep. So prepare before you go to sleep to have any sleep aids available by your bed.

by Anonymousreply 22April 10, 2023 3:17 AM

Gillian Anderson's acting. I recently discovered The Fall. I had been enjoying the show up until Gillain got extra screen time. Wow what a horrible, boring actress and her British accent is atrocious.

by Anonymousreply 23April 10, 2023 3:19 AM

^^^ I love her in that. I guess we all have different tastes.

by Anonymousreply 24April 10, 2023 3:20 AM

When my mother was in a rehab center and not doing well I discovered listening to Mozart thru my bedside Echo helped. Also Hoagy Carmichael.

R26 That’s at 4am when you got 3 hours of sleep and finally gave up.

by Anonymousreply 28April 10, 2023 5:07 AM

R23 That’s surprising as Gillian grew up in England til age 11.

by Anonymousreply 29April 10, 2023 5:15 AM

I once watched "Gangs of New York" and it helped a lot me to fall asleep since that's a boring as hell piece of crap film. Thanks Scorsese!!

by Anonymousreply 30April 10, 2023 5:22 AM

Some melatonin, and then purposely sinking down/relaxing with each exhale and making my mind blank really works!

TBH, I have no trouble falling asleep, but wake up every two or three hours. This would be fine were I retired, but I have to be at work at 8:15, five days a week! 😭

by Anonymousreply 31April 10, 2023 5:33 AM

I have trouble falling asleep not staying asleep. I don’t get drowsy many times and take Ambien. I also take melatonin.

by Anonymousreply 32April 10, 2023 5:34 AM

Cum. And weed. Preferably both

by Anonymousreply 33April 10, 2023 5:37 AM

Sleep hygien actually does work (having a regular sleep/wake time, a routine every night). It’s boring, but it readies your brain for sleep time.

You need to fight the idea that staying awake is cool and fun, and you need to ban the internet from your bed until you’ve learned how to disengage and choose sleep.

(I did cognative behavioural therapy for sleep. It wasn’t anything I didn’t already know, but the practice of it really changed things!)

I fall asleep pretty easily unless I have an early morning meeting or appointment. (My normal sleep hours are 1:30 am to 9:30 am). If I wake up in the middle of the night, I will often come fully awake and my mind will race, so I nibble off a corner of an ambien (probably less than 2.5 mg, so not even a therapeutic dose) and that nibbling it is purely psychological for me. I know I've taken something to help me sleep, so I am able to fall back asleep.

by Anonymousreply 36April 10, 2023 6:31 AM

While I meant this thread to be a sarcastic hit at Norah Jones and her infinite boringness, I'm glad it has now turned into an informative thread about how to get to sleep. (It is pretty hilarious, though, to see how many people don't read beyond the headline!)

by Anonymousreply 37April 10, 2023 7:02 AM

A xanax, ambien with a swig of ghb

by Anonymousreply 38April 10, 2023 7:33 AM

Gabapentin is low key and makes it easier to fall back asleep when i wake in the middle of the night.

by Anonymousreply 43April 10, 2023 10:00 AM

You know what makes for restful sleep? Overnight trains. Some of the best and longest sleep sessions were on the old fashioned choo choo trains. Not the high speed bullet trains, something about the rhythm of the old trains. Probably helped that I was dead tired from a day of sight seeing.

by Anonymousreply 44April 10, 2023 3:07 PM

R44, it was also probably the swaying. Replicates the rocking when you were in the womb and your mother was walking around. The addition of the repetitive sound of the tracks mimicking the regular heartbeat would add to that effect.

by Anonymousreply 45April 10, 2023 4:48 PM

Yep r45, exactly. Even in the cramped old Chinese trains with 6 open bunks per section, I slept like a baby from xian to Beijing.

by Anonymousreply 46April 10, 2023 5:11 PM

Don't take "sleep" medicines. They make people do crazy things like driving while asleep, sending angry emails to the boss, or posting on data lounge.

Chances are your sleeplessness if related to anxiety. So, instead of sleep meds, you should take Ativan. Only when you need it, and not as a long-term thing. If you ask your doctor for some for sleep purposes, they might prescribe you just 8 pills. Hopefully that's all you need to get through this.

by Anonymousreply 47April 10, 2023 5:14 PM

Ambien. But it makes me a cranky bitch the next day, and that horrible aftertaste. I’d rather take NyQuil with a rum chaser.

by Anonymousreply 48April 10, 2023 5:15 PM

ASMR with Reiki on youtube.

Need to try out a few to discover whose voice and style works best for you.

by Anonymousreply 49April 10, 2023 5:23 PM

I was shocked when I was given ambien and it did NOTHING! Did this reaction happen to anyone else who’s taken it?

by Anonymousreply 50April 10, 2023 6:11 PM

It's disturbing to hear people take pills to sleep. I hope they were a last resort.

by Anonymousreply 51April 10, 2023 7:24 PM

OP, look for The Shipping Forecast on YouTube. Those will lull you to sleep.

by Anonymousreply 52April 10, 2023 7:32 PM

I use a white-noise machine, combined with a white-noise app on my cell phone. The reason I use the two is because when it's just one, the point at which the 5-second sound sample loops back to the start can be heard, and it's annoying.

Sometimes, the sound of the air conditioner is enough. I can't sleep in silence.

For some reason, silent movies can sometimes really knock me out. And it's not that I'm bored. I guess it's just the lack of the stimulus that I'm used to makes me drowsy.

by Anonymousreply 58April 11, 2023 12:48 AM

500mg of magnesium

by Anonymousreply 59April 11, 2023 12:52 AM

I was on Tylenol PM off and on for 30 years. Eventually , I developed liver failure . Now I can only take melatonin, 12 mgs, and I use a fan for white noise. I also have a CPAP but I still wake up in the middle of the night. Any suggestions for getting back to sleep? I end up taking naps during the afternoon but then I can't sleep at night.

by Anonymousreply 60April 11, 2023 12:54 AM

I agree with R23 and was beaten down here a long time ago for saying Gillian Anderson's accent is atrocious. I'm sorry, but it sounds put-on. It may be accurate, but it's clearly not natural for her. I'm sure that her wooden acting plays a part in how it comes across, though.

r70, I'll be happy anytime to show you my bottle of nibbled off ambien pills. My doctor does not have qualms about prescribing it to me, but I have never used more than 30 pills over the course of 6 months, (180 days) so you can do the math.

Take some melatonin, then go on You Tube and listen to the old Forensic Files episodes. The narrator, Peter Thomas, has the perfect voice to lull you to sleep.

Norah Jones? Really? Can you even get an erection?

Melatonin works for me, just be aware that it often yields very vivid dreams.

^Lol, now I can’t hear Forensic Files without thinking of Lana Del Rey’s A&W: called up one drunk, called up another/Forensic Files wasn’t on/watching Teenage Diary of a Girl, wondering what went wrong.

I love how this thread was obviously meant to be a "let's shit on Norah Jones" thread, but everyone took it as if OP was genuinely asking about advice on insomnia.

You joke about listening to Norah Jones. I would watch Magnum P.I. reruns to chill out before bed. It worked a charm.
