Tell me about Victor Buono

I think he's an amazing actor from the "Golden Age" of Hollywood.

And he got to act with two of the greats, Bette Davis and Joan Crawford.

His background story is very interesting. Mafia dad who went to prison, but managed Victor's career while locked up.

Apparently, Victor was closeted and gay, but when asked about his sexuality, he responded:

[quote] I've heard or read about actors being asked the immortal question, 'Why have you never married?' They answer with the immortal excuse, 'I just haven't found the right girl.' Because I'm on the hefty side, no one's asked me yet. If they do, that's the answer I'll give. After all, if it was good enough for Monty Clift or Sal Mineo..."

I didn't realize it, but he died at such a young age. He was only 43 and died of a heart attack.

"King Tut" in Batman.

Obese ham.

Incapable of subtlety.

by Anonymousreply 3April 8, 2023 10:53 PM

Starred in the only color episode of "Perry Mason" as a Fagin-like character. He was in other episodes as well. Maybe he was friendly with fellow gay-chub Raymond Burr.

by Anonymousreply 4April 8, 2023 10:56 PM

I never cared for his acting.

by Anonymousreply 5April 8, 2023 10:58 PM

Did he play the piano for real, in this scene?

by Anonymousreply 6April 8, 2023 11:00 PM

He fat.

by Anonymousreply 7April 8, 2023 11:02 PM

After many decades I’m just realizing the actor from Baby Jane was King Tut in Batman. Swift….

by Anonymousreply 8April 8, 2023 11:03 PM

For those who like their prosciutto grasso e scivoloso.

by Anonymousreply 9April 8, 2023 11:06 PM

Grotesque.

Just looking at that lard was Grand Guignol.

by Anonymousreply 10April 8, 2023 11:06 PM

Classically trained Shakespearian actor who played a lot of serious roles. Did a lot of stage work.

by Anonymousreply 11April 8, 2023 11:07 PM

[quote] serious roles

How can you play a serious role when everyone in the audience is thinking "This man needs Lapband Surgery'.

by Anonymousreply 12April 8, 2023 11:11 PM

You'd have to ask Richard Griffiths.

by Anonymousreply 13April 8, 2023 11:14 PM

^ I've just checked Wiki and the bulk of Griffith's big career was playing larger-than-life, comic grotesque roles.

by Anonymousreply 14April 8, 2023 11:24 PM

Loved when Marjorie Bennet told Baby Jane on the phone, "I'm Mr. Flagg's, sekketary."

by Anonymousreply 15April 8, 2023 11:32 PM

Loved him - may try to look up the old Perry Masons.

by Anonymousreply 16April 8, 2023 11:42 PM

Great actor.

by Anonymousreply 17April 8, 2023 11:43 PM

[quote] He fat

Not anymore.

by Anonymousreply 18April 8, 2023 11:48 PM

R17 Which was this 'great actor's' greatest role?.

by Anonymousreply 19April 8, 2023 11:48 PM

He guest starred many times on the Wild Wild West with fellow DL icon Robert Conrad.

by Anonymousreply 20April 8, 2023 11:51 PM

Unimpressed

by Anonymousreply 21April 9, 2023 12:01 AM

He did a Chandler-esque crime movie set in the 40s, with Barbara Bain, Richard Boone.

Buono was a frequent guest on “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.” He often read his humorous poems. Carson must have enjoyed Buono’s sardonic sense of humor. In fact, Carson appeared to enjoy a lot of gay men’s humor, based on the number of their appearances. In addition to Buono, Charles Nelson Reilly, Little Richard, and Larry Kert were often guests.

by Anonymousreply 23April 9, 2023 12:41 AM

Was Buono ever linked with any other gay actor, like James Dean and Sal Mineo?

Or was it strictly paid-for hookups with rent boys?

Or maybe he was celibate?

He was very large, but he had a handsome face.

[quote] Carson appeared to enjoy a lot of gay men’s humor, based on the number of their appearances. In addition to Buono, Charles Nelson Reilly, Little Richard, and Larry Kert were often guests.

No Paul Lynde?

He was the funniest of them all!

by Anonymousreply 24April 9, 2023 12:46 AM

I wonder if Buono got off on the kinky homoerotic situations in both "the wild wild west" with handsome robert conrad or on his episodes of "Batman" and all of the kink situations on that show with handsome adam west and twink burt ward and of course the fact that they were in bulging superhero costumes?

by Anonymousreply 25April 9, 2023 12:54 AM

Yes, R25, Mr Buono was a chronic masturbator.

by Anonymousreply 26April 9, 2023 12:57 AM

[quote] No Paul Lynde?

R24 Lynde appeared once to my knowledge. I think Lynde didn’t like to be interviewed, and he wasn’t “on” during the Carson interview. In fact, Lynde seemed quite nervous and uncomfortable. Carson was very respectful of Lynde and was clearly glad that he had agreed to be on the show.

by Anonymousreply 27April 9, 2023 1:05 AM

R23, I was a gayling when I bought his book:

It Could Be Verse.

So funny

by Anonymousreply 28April 9, 2023 1:05 AM

R14-I don't think you'd call the doctor in Equus or the professor in The History Boys "comic grotesques".

by Anonymousreply 29April 9, 2023 1:06 AM

He waited too long. I was done after 35 but here I am pushing 60 and I know the past years were just a waste of time.

by Anonymousreply 30April 9, 2023 1:07 AM

R24 Paul Lynde’s material was written for him.

by Anonymousreply 31April 9, 2023 1:18 AM

According to the television series Feud, he was arrested for servicing young men in a porno house and DL fave Bette Davis had to bail him out

by Anonymousreply 32April 9, 2023 1:20 AM

Reminder: he got an Oscar best supporting actor nod for "Baby Jane."

by Anonymousreply 33April 9, 2023 1:26 AM

OP ... Victor Buono was not part of Hollywood's "Golden Age," which took place between 1927 and 1959.

Buono's career in cinema did not begin until the early 1960s, and because he was fat, he always played characters older than he actually was. He played Christopher Lloyd's father on Taxi, and they were the same age!

by Anonymousreply 34April 9, 2023 1:27 AM

R14, R29

[quote] Richard Griffiths … comic grotesques

Thankfully the director of 'Equus' used dimmed lighting for his long monologues so we weren't distracted by the repulsive sight of his 'gunt' sagging grotesquely below the belt.

I contend that the teacher in 'The History Boys' is a failed human whose role is merely to help the students. He has no life of his own but he helps the students get a life of their own.

(Similarly Alan Bennet is an extremely talented but faulty writer. His forte is the printed page as he's incapable of successful plays because his plots are so weak and episodic. His diary shows him at is best.)

by Anonymousreply 35April 9, 2023 1:40 AM

He probably did more television than film and yes, the Golden Age was over by the time he appeared.

by Anonymousreply 36April 9, 2023 2:00 AM

His father was smuggling birds.

by Anonymousreply 37April 9, 2023 2:26 AM

He played Bette Davis' FATHER in "Hush, hush Sweet Charlotte."

For that alone, she owed him a get out of jail card!

So

by Anonymousreply 38April 9, 2023 2:50 AM

To be fair in “Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte” he played father to Bette Davis’ character when much younger.

by Anonymousreply 39April 9, 2023 3:55 AM

He always kinda gave me the creeps.

by Anonymousreply 40April 9, 2023 4:01 AM

Richard Griffiths was great in "Pie in the SKy".

by Anonymousreply 41April 9, 2023 4:09 AM

Richard Griffiths never did no nude scenes.

by Anonymousreply 42April 9, 2023 4:41 AM

Charles Laughton was also grotesquely fat but I maintain he had more intellect and taste in his toenail compared to the immense enormity of the grotesque subject of this thread.

I don't understand why some of you are trashing Victor Buono for his weight.

Raymond Burr was HUGE and gay, and no one seemed to have a problem with him.

So what's the difference?

by Anonymousreply 44April 9, 2023 5:40 AM

I think he may have been the inspiration for Mr. Creosote.
