Celebrities Who’ve Been Blacklisted Because of their Actions

Fred Savage, for example. It will be a year next month since he was fired from The Wonder Years reboot for alleged inappropriate conduct. He’s been off social media since then.

In May 2020, The Flash’s Hartley Sawyer was fired after several racist and misogynist Twitter posts he made from 2009 to 2014 resurfaced. He has not been seen or heard from since and has no more acting roles listed on IMDB.

Blake Jenner from Glee disappeared for a year after his ex-wife and co-star Melissa Benoit revealed that she was a victim of domestic abuse - her iris was torn after a phone was thrown at her. She also stated she had experienced extreme control, manipulation, and cycles of severe violence including being slapped, punched, shoved into a wall, dragged by her hair, and choked during the relationship. Jenner issued a statement on his Instagram before leaving social media for a year.

Of these three, only Jenner has resumed his career it seems for now.

The Hartley Sawyer controversy was really disappointing - he was a breath of fresh air on The Flash as Ralph Dibny, and the show had just introduced a stellar Sue Dibny, played by some talented nepo baby, I forget who.

I agree, R3. Plus, his comments, despite being in very bad taste, were made many years ago.

I do think Fred Savage will come back from this. He’s had such a long career and I think he is well liked despite the allegations. Just my opinion.

r20, no one really cares about black on black crime.

If Will had slapped a white man, or even a woman, it would have been a hell of a lot worse. Also, Chris is a known asshole and gets little love from the black community since his ass is always willing to make black women the butt of his jokes. I'm not just talking about the Jada thing. So black folks hardly give a damn, beyond their built in disgust of Will and Jada's recent red-table/open marriage antics.

Chris has spent his entire career making fun of black women, and went to far as to give his black friends permission to say the N-word around him. So, fuck Chris Rock.

Note, Samuel Jackson, Denzel Washington, and some other A-listers (not just the black ones) instantly came to Will's table to check on him after the slap. Show who Hollywood actually gives a damn about. While the Will slap was shocking for many, there just isn't enough love for Chris fucking Rock, to blacklist Smith. Especially since Will remains bankable enough overseas and could have a comeback in the States, who knows.

by Anonymousreply 26April 8, 2023 5:00 PM

by Anonymousreply 31April 8, 2023 6:32 PM

Well, this IS an alleged “gossip” site, r31.

by Anonymousreply 32April 8, 2023 6:39 PM

No Clooney didn't sexually harass her. Due to her mental illness she was very unfiltered and had no qualms outing George at every opportunity. He retaliated with vicious verbal attacks on set. He also had her blacklisted after ER which was easy to do since her mental illness made it so that no further explanation was needed as to why. His film career was taking off and he couldn't have her blathering on about his sexuality on every set she might work on.

Actors have a personal code of honor amongst themselves not to out each other. All his ER co-stars honored that code except Vanessa. George was initially involved with Noah Wylie and then moved on to Waldo Sanchez who was a hairdresser on the ER set and is still in his life to this day. Waldo can be seen in the People magazine photo spread for the sham wedding, he was one of George's groomsmen. Just because she had issues doesn't mean what she saw and heard wasn't real, she just shouldn't have been blabbing about it. A healthy person would have had the good judgement to keep their mouth shut.

George's PR had to do damage control when he and Noah went on a European vacation together and the paps caught wind of it. They put out a statement that Eriq LaSalle was also there and it was just a "guys trip". But there was no evidence of Eriq's presence, lol. The French beard was hired after the European vacation debacle. French beard sued George when her contract expired and got 1M and a house to keep his secrets. She hired then famed palimony attorney Marvin Michelson. Rumor was that French girl was going to spill the beans about George and Mark Wahlburg which is why he settled.

Fun fact: an old DL thread reported that George paid Noah's rent and provided him a car until the ER money started rolling in. That's so sweet!

by Anonymousreply 33April 8, 2023 6:40 PM

Buffy Saint-Marie was blacklisted in the early 1960s by LBJ because her song, "Universal Soldier" was no holds barred truthful about war, pointing the finger squarely at the warmongers. Her career never fully blossomed as her talent merited.

Lee Grant was similarly blacklisted because she attended and spoke at the funeral of a Communist.

These entertainers suffered needlessly; those of us who admire them were deprived of some of their best work.

by Anonymousreply 34April 8, 2023 6:54 PM

R25 Can you please tell me more? I've heard talk of her being challenging to work with but haven't heard many specifics.

Was she actually blacklisted, or was it more dwindling of opportunities until they dried up due to people not wanting to work with her again? Do you think there's any hope for her to return to acting if she came back with a good attitude?

It's a shame. She should have been able to keep steady work, or at least some work. I think one of the reasons she stays out of the public eye is pride. I suspect she had untreated mental health issues that contributed.

by Anonymousreply 69April 9, 2023 4:13 AM

Linda Lavin is the opposite of black listed - inexplicably, she’s worked constantly for 50 years - and in mostly good projects, too.

by Anonymousreply 70April 9, 2023 4:43 AM

Will Smith has had only one job since "the slap" and it was a self-created one as a producer on his own project that he's not starring in.

Emancipation was already filmed before the slap.

Meanwhile, Johnny Depp just had a movie premiere at Cannes.

As for Fred Savage, he was sexually harrassing women since he was a teenager on The Wonder Years. He and the actor who played his brother were sued by a costumer who claimed she was fired from the first show because she complained about the harassment.

They settled out of court and Savage claimed to be innocent.

R34, Buffy Sainte-Marie is still a legend in her home country of Canada and was interviewed on CBC's The National last year:

Madonna by ClearChannel when her anti-Bush, American Life album was released. It pissed off the conservative brass ring and they blocked her from radio play. Even with her subsequent success, she never had another #1 hit in the US. Hung Up stalled at #7, 4 Minutes hit #3, and Lovin' barely hit #10.

A similar thing happened to Janet Jackson. Each album from Rhythm Nation to All For You (2001) were smash hits. Multi-platinum albums with multiple #1 hits on each. After the Super Bowl incident it was over. No more #1 hit songs and all the albums suffered dismal sales. After a few years, Discipline received way better reviews, but the singles still went nowhere. Both artists could no longer rely on the corporate structures needed to rack up #1 hits. By the time streaming became a thing, they had aged out of any cultural relevancy to be at the top.

After the personal drama with Columbia and flopping at Virgin with that undercooked single and retro soundtrack, Mariah could've suffered a similar fate. She could actually sing and thus enjoyed another decade of success before becoming Mariah Claus. She's definitely still blacklisted by the Grammys because after she hit it big and got married, they didn't like her pushy husband. They eventually gave her a few lower level awards for that comeback album in the 2000's, but she's still blacklisted from the biggest categories.

Academy Award winner Mira Sorvino and proven talent Ashley Judd were blacklisted from being offered parts in the LOTR films based on Harvey smearing them as "difficult" to work with. Years later during "Me Too" LOTR director Peter Jackson attested to this and apologized to the two actors on Twitter. I am surprised that both of these actors have not been able to collect the big ducats for defamation and slander. I am sure that "The Lord of the Rings" movie was not the only project for which they were removed from consideration in the late 90s and the 00s. So, yes, they were blacklisted and their "action" was to refuse to provide sexual services to a pig.

This instance of blacklisting has a clear resolution, but consider how every day, other worthy talents are similarly smeared, their reputations quietly dismantled via intentional innuendo or out-and-out lies -- whether in the fields of academia, healthcare, business or performing arts/entertainment.

Musician Jose Feliciano was "cancelled" in the U.S. after his "non-traditional" rendition of The Star Spangled Banner at game 5 of the 1968 World Series (that's baseball).

The New York Times called it "controversial." Fans wrote it off as a "disgrace" and "unpatriotic," a "travesty that will never be permitted again." Cardinals pitcher Dick Hughes said, "thumbs all the way down." But not everybody was outraged. Former Cardinals catcher Tim McCarver said, "Why not that way?"

U.S. radio stations stopped playing him - he had a major hit with a cover of The Doors "Light My Fire" at the time and would have toured but didn't. He moved back to Puerto Rico and toured Europe for a couple years before getting back in the U.S.'s good graces with his Christmas song "Feliz Navidad."

In the end, tho, Jose's rendition of the US anthem is now credited for breaking open the door for other artists eventually also spicing up the anthem (for better and for worse).

Vanessa Marquez, R17, is an example of why “defunding police” (possibly depriving them of some war toys) and diverting those funds into mental health care and community liasons is vital. Police aren’t the people who should be responding to mental health/many domestic violence calls, and most decent cops would be the first to say so!

Over thirty years ago now, a childhood friend of mine (in Canada) was shot in the torso and the back by a rookie cop because he was brandishing a knife and threatening to kill himself. This shit has to stop. :/

Decades later, women would be warbling and yodeling, trying to fit in as many notes as possible as an affront to all that was decent and good, and yet THAT was somehow okay?!? 🙄

No, R119; there should be teams ready to go out like there are teams of cops and paramedics. There should be funding for shelter with oversight; beds/staff in withdrawal spaces; therapy and programs for sober living rather than the piecemeal shit that exists now.

It requires a new approach, which is what “defunding the police” is all about.

Casey Affleck. Sexually harassing women. Dating a 20 something year old after fed up River Phoenix’s sister divorced him. Don’t think he was even invited to his brother’s wedding. Trying to make a comeback. I think he’s doing a movie with boring Matt Damon.

R112 is he? Ezra seems to be doing fine when he should be in jail.

R100 that is hilarious 😂 Sucks to be Jenna.

R123 I watched Interstellar the other night (which Matt Damon is also in) and i was wondering why they picked Casey? Like anyone could have played that part.

R83, I agree. A lot of people seem to be forgetting how bad George W. Bush was because Trump has turned out to be so terrible. Bush was absolutely awful and damaged the United States domestically and internationally in many ways.

Bush also proposed a Constitutional Amendment to ban gay marriage!

You wanna talk about being blacklisted because of one's actions? We have been excluded from parties, chi-chi dinners, and social events where good gossip is exchanged and the cognoscenti make decisions -- just cuz of who we support politically. So don't forget about us victims and political prisoners!

[quote]Vanessa Marquez had serious psychological issues

I knew her on social media and she didn't have the kind of psychological issues that should have ended with cops murdering her. Almost nobody does, honestly; sometimes there's someone who is so mentally ill that they become an immediate danger and have to be dealt with, but that's rare.

Vanessa was a Section 8 renter and her landlord is a greedy piece of shit who called the cops with the explicit hope of getting her evicted.

What she said about the Clooney blacklisting wasn't particularly shocking or unbelievable, so it might have happened, especially if he didn't realize she was dealing with a mental illness at the time. Remember how nasty the others were to Estelle Getty when she was forgetting her lines on "Golden Girls," and even after they found out she had been dealing with illness and dementia, they weren't particularly forgiving? That's how things were back then.

I know why our troll is saying Clooney is a bad person for this, but he's not, if it even happened then he was dealing with it in the exact same way anyone else would have at the time.

by Anonymousreply 139April 12, 2023 11:32 AM

Except for a few big stars who have nothing to lose by announcing they're Conservative, the average actor with same politics keeps quiet for fear is afraid being blacklisted by Hollywood's left leaning casting directors and producers.

by Anonymousreply 140April 12, 2023 11:37 AM

Chris Langham was cast in a few films after he left prison, but nothing since 2016. He may have simply retired at that point, decided not to keep trying. The same thing seems to have happened to Jeffrey Jones, as well.

[quote]Cristela Alonzo.

[quote] She had a short-lived sitcom on ABC. It got cancelled. She criticized ABC. She hasn't been heard from on network tv ever since.

Cristela Alonzo's stand up is mostly bland and her sitcom was hit or miss. She lucked out at getting a show, but she criticized the network, producers, and the guy who was her writing partner. There was a blind item right before her show was canned about a lead on TV show being difficult and that the cast and crew were hoping the show would get canned. I think there was some kind of ego going on with her similar to Roseanne Barr, but on a lower level.

Alonzo's situation in the entertainment industry is odd. A few years after the sitcom was canned, she was cast in the pilot for Kevin (Probably) Saves the World which was an ABC show. She was replaced when the show got a series order. It seemed like ABC execs were willing to give her another chance, but then changed their minds. She had a voice role in Cars 3, but that didn't help her career all that much. She has done two Netflix specials and I noticed when the last special was released, several media outlets were basically cheerleading for Alonzo. There are some people who keep trying to make her happen, but the Cars movie role and the comedy specials have done very little to help her. I've wondered why Eva Longoria who champions herself as a Latina leader has never tried to help Alonzo.

I don't think so? But Kristin is the one who introduced Allison to NXVIM and didn't really seem to get much backlash.

Also i don't know if it was ever actually confirmed that Dean Cain wasn't allowed back on Supergirl for being a magat.

Chris Noth. Accusations were made but he was never charged or even questioned by the police. Yet he was immediately fired from The Equalizer and his scene in the AJLT season finale was edited out. He's back on social media and seems to be working a bit here and there.

Poor Roscoe. He was definitely a party guy, but he was no rapist. The 3rd jury acquitted him, and as you probably know, r127, he didn't perform again for many years. He did direct, though he didn't use the name Buster Keaton jokingly suggested, Will B Goode. Instead, he used William Goodrich.

Here he is with Keaton in Coney Island.

R26 you may not like Chris Rock but no one deserves to be slapped on national television for a joke. Will Smith can make 100 movies, and no one will forget. He embarrassed himself, the Oscars, black men, and Americans. I hope like Tom Cruise, the films that hit the mainstream are stupid "boy movies". Men like Tommy and Will are just creeps in other costumes. If you had any self- respect R26 you would understand that no matter what Chris Rock said it won't be remembered as badly as an assault. Maybe if someone hit you for a joke you would see how senseless it is. Black women are more insulted by Hollywood than Chris Rock. If you want to defend black women then ask yourself why Smith and his wife aren't doing more to bring black women into moviemaking since he is such a big star? The only thing Jada has done is to introduce a dog trainer. You are just as misguided as he was.

by Anonymousreply 152April 12, 2023 6:36 PM

I like Chris. Hate Will and Jada. May they be banished from Hollywood forever.

Based on their behavior at public events, I'm quite confident in their ability to get themselves shunned in Hollywood without anyone ever having seen their work.

Regarding Ansel Elgort, I don't think it was so much the age difference as the woman accusing him of sexual assault. Though she was a minor at the time, they were close enough in age that they could conceivably have attended classes together had they gone to the same school. I'm not one to think that a high school senior getting involved with someone college age should automatically be considered the victim of a crime.

The Wayans brothers. They got too big for their britches when they had their ABC show, "My Wife and Kids", and started to make outlandish demands, stating if ABC didn't meet them, they would quit. ABC called their bluff and cancelled the show. The only jobs they get are the ones they generate for themselves. You don't fuck with The Maus.
