Tennessee Three Officially Expelled

Disgusting.

Republicans, you will rue the day for the shame you have brought on this country. Young people are disgusted by you. You think they don't know?

by Anonymousreply 320April 22, 2023 11:16 PM

Republicans are the biggest threat to democracy the US faces -- more than Russia, more than China. The threat is always greatest when it comes from within.

by Anonymousreply 1April 6, 2023 8:36 PM

Basically, they were too "mouthy." That was their "crime."

by Anonymousreply 2April 6, 2023 8:38 PM

Oh it’s being aided greatly by Russia and China here and other places.

by Anonymousreply 3April 6, 2023 8:39 PM

how is this even possible?

by Anonymousreply 4April 6, 2023 8:43 PM

This is outrageous.

by Anonymousreply 5April 6, 2023 8:44 PM

They played an interview with one of these Repubs on a radio show who said " Well, two of them were outspoken about 1/6." In other words, they were anti-insurrection and that's not allowed.

I genuinely feel bad for the good southerners who have to live among these MAGAt troglodytes.

by Anonymousreply 6April 6, 2023 8:45 PM

I’ll never buy a bottle of Jack Daniels again.

by Anonymousreply 7April 6, 2023 8:46 PM

A preview of when the GQP will try to ban the “Democrat Party” altogether.

by Anonymousreply 8April 6, 2023 8:46 PM

The GOP is trying to compare this to the insurrection. If you encounter one who does, putting aside the preposterous comparison, ask them how many congresspeople who were a part of that terrorist attack, have been expelled from Congress and then point to how many head up committees in Congress.

by Anonymousreply 9April 6, 2023 8:47 PM

Unconstitutional.

And they are proving to millions of voters that they are cheating, undemocratic, tratiorous cunts.

Fuck anyone who supports this. Fuck you to Hell.

by Anonymousreply 10April 6, 2023 8:49 PM

Hard to believe this is really happening in the USA. There should be relentless protest of this by everyone who cares about democracy and free speech.

by Anonymousreply 11April 6, 2023 8:50 PM

So all you have to do to get rid of the opposition is kick them out. Never mind elections.

by Anonymousreply 12April 6, 2023 8:52 PM

MTG violated decorum at the State of the Union. She should be kicked out!

by Anonymousreply 13April 6, 2023 8:52 PM

Not hard to believe at all, r11. The GQP have made no secret of their utter contempt for democracy.

by Anonymousreply 14April 6, 2023 8:54 PM

Those people were there to speak for their constituents. They were voted in there BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE.

They peacefully protested the violent murder of three 9 yos and 3 adults!

WTF

by Anonymousreply 15April 6, 2023 8:56 PM

This is just the GOP at its most vindictive and childish. The party has gotten to the point where they govern by bully tactics alone. The one silver lining is that all three of these folks can run for their seats again in the inevitable special election, and chances are they'll be reelected.

by Anonymousreply 16April 6, 2023 8:56 PM

The Republican Party is no longer legitimate. It has been taken over by extremists who are ignoring the will of the large majority of Americans to regulate guns and not regulate abortion.

by Anonymousreply 17April 6, 2023 8:57 PM

A really stupid move on the Republicans' part. They just made a cause celebre out of this for the Democrats and there will be blowback.

R17 is right.

by Anonymousreply 18April 6, 2023 8:58 PM

What you're witnessing is the beginning of the end of conservative, white male mediocrity's rule. They will see an "insurrection" if they keep going against the will of the majority. The ACTUAL majority, not the bullshit claim by the minority MAGAts

R16, and imagine the money they'll raise to run again. WI-level $

by Anonymousreply 19April 6, 2023 8:59 PM

I am not understand what is problem.

by Anonymousreply 20April 6, 2023 9:00 PM

The death knell ringing for the GOP right here.

by Anonymousreply 21April 6, 2023 9:02 PM

Does the national Republican Party think this is okay? They should have spoken out against this autocratic action. For that matter, where are the protests from prominent Democratic politicians?

by Anonymousreply 22April 6, 2023 9:03 PM

R21 Only if Americans refuse to accept it.

by Anonymousreply 23April 6, 2023 9:04 PM

R22, it’s actually better to let the local politicians speak in their own defense. It makes it real. This has the attention of much of the country as it’s happening.

by Anonymousreply 24April 6, 2023 9:06 PM

The two Justins are 27. These are the "influencers" young people need to look to, and it looks like many are.

by Anonymousreply 25April 6, 2023 9:07 PM

The comments section under the Washington Post article for this story is already closed. That seems a bit premature; I wonder why they did that.

by Anonymousreply 26April 6, 2023 9:11 PM

[quote] Republicans, you will rue the day…

They ain’t rueing shit. The Pussycrats had two years to bring charges, indict, impeach, expel, and only a NYC DA managed an indictment on 8 year old charges. When one party is evil and the other incompetent.

by Anonymousreply 27April 6, 2023 9:12 PM

Oh, you can bet the young are watching this. More old, white Republicans not giving a single fuck about keeping them safe. Not listening to their legitimate concerns. Those kids are gonna put Repub peepaw and meemaw away for good.

by Anonymousreply 28April 6, 2023 9:12 PM

Listen to these young men. Disgusting they have to serve with absolute trash who would lose any debate against them.

by Anonymousreply 29April 6, 2023 9:14 PM

Arkansas authorizes child labor. Kansas legalizes examinations of childrens' private parts. Idaho prevents people leaving the state for abortions. Florida signs a six-week limitation on abortion procedures.

Tennessee says, "Oh no, now hold MY beer!!"

by Anonymousreply 30April 6, 2023 9:34 PM

[quote]"Oh no, now hold MY beer!!"

Make it a trans holding it, and some psychotic DLers would already have this thread to 200 replies, 'cause "priorities."

by Anonymousreply 31April 6, 2023 9:46 PM

Looking forward to hearing the "concerned Dems" next year tell us about a "red wave" again, because the GOP is just so gosh darn appealing!

by Anonymousreply 32April 6, 2023 9:53 PM

Florida just proposed a drag ban so extreme it would make performing Rocky horror illegal. Cosplay too - on the week right after Megacon.

by Anonymousreply 33April 6, 2023 9:55 PM

Megacon?

Is that a new nickname for the Mango Mussolini?

by Anonymousreply 34April 6, 2023 10:04 PM

Wait. What? How do you expel elected officials. Expelled from office for good?

by Anonymousreply 35April 6, 2023 10:04 PM

R35, yes, for good, for “decorum” violations.

by Anonymousreply 36April 6, 2023 10:06 PM

The GOP fascists could use some decorum lessons.

by Anonymousreply 37April 6, 2023 10:07 PM

Fascism.

by Anonymousreply 38April 6, 2023 10:07 PM

Think about this: The same people who defend what happened on 1/6, attempted to compare it to children (actual children) peacefully protesting for gun reform to and yet, they celebrate the former which was actually violent and are punching the latter.

There isn't even consistency in how the MAGAts think. It's mind-numbing how genuinely stupid and despicable they are.

by Anonymousreply 39April 6, 2023 10:13 PM

reform and yet*

by Anonymousreply 40April 6, 2023 10:14 PM

Damn!

by Anonymousreply 41April 6, 2023 10:14 PM

BREAKING: Johnson keeps her seat!

by Anonymousreply 42April 6, 2023 10:22 PM

Whoa. They expelled two young Black men, but spared the white woman, Gloria Johnson. That’s not suspicious at all.

by Anonymousreply 43April 6, 2023 10:23 PM

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I’d like to know the decision making process for that move. I’m sure we’ll find out.

by Anonymousreply 44April 6, 2023 10:32 PM

A large swath of the MAGA constituents will be dead within a decade. Surely living with all that anger and obesity must shorten lifespan.

by Anonymousreply 45April 6, 2023 10:33 PM

Republican Dictatorships are taking over the GOP states. No Joke = BAN FEDERAL STATE FUNDING. Let them pay for their own bridges and tornadoes.

by Anonymousreply 46April 6, 2023 10:34 PM

R45 = Thats what they were saying about Mitch McConnell 20 years ago. Worse younger idiots are taking their places. Just ask MTG and Boebert.

by Anonymousreply 47April 6, 2023 10:36 PM

Oh, this will not end well for the repubs.

by Anonymousreply 48April 6, 2023 10:40 PM

I hate to wish my life away, but I cannot wait for the 2024 elections. Younger voters of fucking pissed!

by Anonymousreply 49April 6, 2023 10:44 PM

This is how you get civil war.

by Anonymousreply 50April 6, 2023 10:49 PM

Johnson survived by one vote. I don’t think they’ve voted on the other Justin yet.

by Anonymousreply 51April 6, 2023 10:49 PM

Let these Red States secede. We don't need them.

by Anonymousreply 52April 6, 2023 10:51 PM

R51, you are correct.

by Anonymousreply 53April 6, 2023 10:51 PM

Why isn’t it all 3 (or none of the 3 as it should be)

by Anonymousreply 54April 6, 2023 10:52 PM

Someone demanded to know how Democrats are reacting.

Here you go.

by Anonymousreply 55April 6, 2023 10:56 PM

In all seriousness: How fucking despicable is that TN Speaker: Cameron Sexton. He said this could be considered worse than the insurrection. They are so desperate to defend what those parasites did on 1/6. Sicko.

by Anonymousreply 56April 6, 2023 11:04 PM

[quote]I’d like to know the decision making process for that move. I’m sure we’ll find out.

What part of "she's white" is unclear to you?

by Anonymousreply 57April 6, 2023 11:08 PM

Holy shit! In a crowd outside the chamber, the female representative (Jones), who was “spared” expulsion took a and answered a question from a reporter. The question: What do you think the reason is for you being spared, and the black representative not spared. Her answer: “maybe it has to do with color of their skin”?

Fucking balls. I love her. This Q-fuckery is NOT going to go over well. Bring on the special election, so those expelled can regain their seats.

by Anonymousreply 58April 6, 2023 11:08 PM

Two *black* reps peacefully protesting are worse than thousands of violent, white insurrectionists to Republicans. If you needed anymore proof of what LEOs would've done on 1/6 if they knew it was going to be thousands of people who were anything other than white who would storm the capitol, then you're blind.

by Anonymousreply 59April 6, 2023 11:12 PM

The two young men were great speakers.

Honestly, it's up to Gen Z to save us now. They're voting in greater numbers. They've spent their lives watching their elders do fuck-all about school shootings while they've had shooting drills all their lives. They care about abortion rights. They care about climate change. And most of them think LGB rights isn't even a discussion.

by Anonymousreply 60April 6, 2023 11:14 PM

Yes, they retained the white one.

by Anonymousreply 61April 6, 2023 11:17 PM

At the end of the day, there isn’t a gun big enough for the Tennessee GOP to shoot their collective feet with. See you at the special elections you motherfuckers from hell.

by Anonymousreply 62April 6, 2023 11:20 PM

"Hi. We're the Tennessee GOP. We just lifted a handsome, charismatic, well-spoken Gen Z black Democrat to national prominence. Git 'er done!"

by Anonymousreply 63April 6, 2023 11:23 PM

Well, now they HAVE expelled both Justins.

by Anonymousreply 64April 7, 2023 12:01 AM

Fascist AND racist! Cool!

by Anonymousreply 65April 7, 2023 12:10 AM

Where are our Deplorables? Our MAGAt mama bears? Defective-o?

Come tell us how PROUD you are of your disgusting FASCIST party! Your RACIST, garbage party!

Where are y'all? Stand proud! Look at what you are now. This is you.

by Anonymousreply 66April 7, 2023 12:23 AM

I hope this inspires Gen Z to vote out Republicans,

by Anonymousreply 67April 7, 2023 12:28 AM

R66, they’re frantically bumping other posts to try and hide this one.

by Anonymousreply 68April 7, 2023 12:35 AM

Anyone who thinks the Civil War ever ended has to look and see that the Union is more threatened now than ever.

by Anonymousreply 69April 7, 2023 12:39 AM

There never should have been a Civil War. We'd all be better off today if the South had been allowed to secede.

by Anonymousreply 70April 7, 2023 12:46 AM

I see that, R67. I see their cowardice. We ALL see it.

by Anonymousreply 71April 7, 2023 12:54 AM

Apparently, they will both be reappointed by the local governments in their districts. Heard this on All in with Chris Hayes. Not sure if this is true. If so, this has all just been political theater on the part of the GOP.

Reappointed or not, I think America has received this message, loud and clear. Gen Z gets it. Roe's death spoke to others. There are only so many white billionaires to simp for, GQP.

[quote]According to the Edison Research National Election Pool exit poll, the national youth vote choice for the U.S. House of Representatives was 63% for Democrats, 35% for Republicans. That’s almost identical to 2020, when youth preferred Democrats to Republicans by 62% to 36%, and a small shift in favor of Republicans from the previous midterm: in 2018, the youth vote between Democrats and Republicans was 67% to 32%—which was the largest margin ever for Democrats among young voters.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 88April 7, 2023 1:20 AM

MAGAt dumbass: if the youth vote wasn't OVERWHELMINGLY going for Democrats, the Republicans wouldn't be trying to raise the voting age and to restrict voting on college campuses.

I'm not sure if you're getting your ignorant opinions at your Sunday schoolin' or on some Qtard forum, but you are grossly incorrect.

Funny, I didn't see you assholes say the same when a bunch of meathead trash in MI ***with ARs*** went into the statehouse. Why didn't we hear a peep from you people then?

You are fucking pathetic. You're the same traitors who witnessed that terrorist bitch Ashli Babbitt going through a smashed fucking door/window specifically to go kill MoC and you've painted her as some innocent young woman there to hand out fucking daisies to the officers.

It's quite evident that for the right-wing to have supporters, they have to be completely brain dead to buy the bullshit you sell

by Anonymousreply 91April 7, 2023 1:52 AM

And at a time when the GOP is freaking about losing the youth vote, it's really stepping on a big rake to kick out two charismatic state representatives in their 20s, much less two Black men.

by Anonymousreply 95April 7, 2023 2:07 AM

One of the issues with some progressive Gen Z is that they hate moderate Democrats/Democrats who don't go far left enough. It's the same with a lot of progressive Gen Xers and millennials . I watch The Young Turks, The Majority Report with Sam Seder, and other progressive YouTube shows. I do agree with a good amount of their views. But, they can be insufferable as fuck when they rant against moderate or establishment type Dems. There was a gay guy in Colorado who ran in the Democratic primary in Lauren Boebert's Congressional district. The guy described himself as a moderate Democrat and he was trashed on The Majority Report. Sometimes it's funny to watch Emma Vigeland and Ana Kasparian being pained to give credit to Democrats who aren't AOC or Bernie when they manage to keep things like reproductive rights and protections in some states. For example, on today's Majority Report, Emma was annoyed as fuck when she mentioned that NM governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed bills that would protect doctors from prosecution from out of state interests when it comes out of states patients going into NM for abortions. Deep down Emma and Ana know that if some moderate Dems weren't in office this country would be worse off in many ways. They will never completely admit that on their youtube shows. If some Democrat woman who isn't AOC becomes the first woman president, Emma and Ana will be raging in private.

by Anonymousreply 96April 7, 2023 2:08 AM

MAGAts desperate to spin, as usual. There really is no way to overstate how awful this is.

When you talk about "affirmative action" and you look at these two young men who are no doubt accused of benefiting from it, just listen to their eloquence vs the conservative white men twice or three times their age who personify failing upward. They sound like barely-educated buffoons and limited in their thought-process. No depth.

It shows you how little is required of white males to attain power...not that an imbecile like Trump (who wouldn't know who wrote the constitution if Madison himself handed him a copy), didn't exemplify failing upwards.

by Anonymousreply 105April 7, 2023 2:37 AM

"There’s something people are missing about what happened in Tennessee.

This was personal.

Rep. Justin Jones didn’t only protest for stronger gun safety. He was the activist who played a role in the bust of Confederate general Nathan Bedford Forrest being taken down from the Tennessee Capitol.

In February 2019, Rep. Jones, then an unelected activist, staged a protest at the Tennessee state Capitol where he demanded the removal of a the former Ku Klux Klan leader before being arrested.

The statue was finally removed in 2021. However, it seems some relics of the past remain."

Yes, let's punish all the citizens of the state, including those protesting the expulsion, because of the actions of their idiot lawmakers.

by Anonymousreply 122April 7, 2023 11:13 AM

Ironic that this occurred in Tennessee, birthplace of the Ku Klux Klan. Representatives Jones and Pearson have already been elevated to national prominence and are both compelling speakers.

National corporations located in Tennessee must speak out; the Memphis Grizzlies, Nashville Predators and Tennessee Titans need to refuse to play and every college team in the state needs to boycott.

Anyone talking about Dems doing more doesn’t get it. The way Dems win is through a war of words. Repukes have played in fears and used their raw grab of power to become entrenched in many areas of our country. We are not them. We need to win the hearts and minds of voters. It will happen, it’s already happening with Millennials and Gen Z. Stopping to Repukes level will never work, because as I’ve said many times, there is no low they won’t go.

My wife and I live over in Memphis so we know more of Justin Pearson as a result.

I think that Pearson and Jones are almost to good for Tennessee! They're phenomenal and someone had to shake things up!

In Tennessee there were once the Regan enthusiasts. My wife told me about that. All these people in local public service idolizing Regan. She is from Middle Tennessee originally. Years go by and then these people who grew up with the Regan influence stand with Trump. My God!

Someone had to break the circle. Both Justin's did that marvelously well.

My English is ghastly right now. I'm off from my online Spanish instructor job today and need my morning coffee.

What happens in Tennessee with Bill Lee and Marsha Blackburn and all these hateful freaks is morally wrong! Sadly such things can come to your town. Tennessee is becoming a template for a downright conservative dictatorship. It's all sinful.

By the early 1920s, Indiana was a center of Klan activity. At its height, the state had over 250,000 Klansmen [9]. In the 1920s, journalist and social critic H.L. Mencken commented “it is commonly reported now that the banner Ku Klux Klan State is not Georgia, but Indiana.”

The KKK vs. the Crips vs. Memphis City Council

[quote]In Memphis's Forrest Park, there's a statue of Nathan Bedford Forrest, one of the most infamous and powerful racists in American history. Lately it's been at the center of the city's often shaky race relations. In part 1, we meet the KKK members who plan to rally in support of Nathan Bedford Forrest and the local gang members who have a different idea in mind.

The only place I've ever seen KKK paraphernalia openly displayed was in Tennessee. There was a little section with books and stickers for sale in a cute shop outside Nashville. It was shocking and disturbing.

Republicans are creating heroes for entire generations of voters. People who only want to keep them from getting murdered at school, or a concert, at a club, or at worship. Only one political party cares. The other brushes aside their concerns and fears, murmurring platitudes and shouting for: More firearms! Easier access! No restrictions!

When you call yourself "Pro-Life", you ought to care more about the breathing humans walking, talking, and living around you than metal machines that spit bullets or "owning" the opposition.

It's not just liberal kids who are dying by gun violence in this country. It's not just Democrats who aren't safe to go to worship or to a musical venue, because of all of the firearms. It's everyone. This is an American problem, but only one political party wants to try to help.

by Anonymousreply 150April 7, 2023 6:10 PM

Conservative David Frum on what a huge political mistake this is for Republicans. Long thread at link but 1 excerpt:

Tennessee Republican majority may be so solid that the local party has nothing to fear. But think how this plays in competitive states like Georgia and North Carolina. Not hard to represent what happened tonight as a move out of the 1890s. The Tennessee Republicans are now represented as bigots and Ku Kluxers. Maybe they deserve it. If not, then they're idiots. Why not a fine of a day's pay? Why volunteer to be the divot underneath somebody else's hole-in-one golfball?

So many hysterics (or just trolls) here. Biden does not single handedly control federal dollars. Congress holds the keys to the purse.

If Biden started to behave in a heavy handed vindictive manner it would backfire as badly as these OTT Republican power plays. Getting into a mudfight might appease your bloodlust, but it would just be the other side shooting itself in the foot too.

There's something to be said for giving the GOP enough rope to hang themselves, which is just what the Democrats are doing. That's what the adults in the room do, and the "Biden does nothing" chorus are not adults.

BTW, the Democrats are not the reason that SCOTUS has veered right. That's squarely on the shoulders of the GOP and all the jackasses that voted for them.

by Anonymousreply 238April 8, 2023 9:05 PM

Yep r232. After all the warnings about it for years it’s arriving. The judge in Texas needlessly stopping the use of an abortion drug approved by the FDA 20 years ago shows they make tortured rulings based not on precedent but on twisting the law to conform to their backwards religious beliefs. Tennessee, all the shit in Florida and Texas, and the courts which make rulings based on the religious dogmas of the judges (all the way to the US Supreme Court) mean we’re in for some sick shit coming up. They won’t let anything stop them now. They’ve been dreaming of this outcome for 50 years.

The voice vote gaveling by Porky Pig's nephew @ 2:40 - 3:00 would be comical if it weren't absurd (and/or illegal).

Watching the link @R243, all I'm wondering is why does every one of these MAGAts look like they came out of central casting? White trash porkers.

by Anonymousreply 245April 9, 2023 12:28 AM

by Anonymousreply 246April 9, 2023 12:39 AM

[quote] Watching the link @[R243], all I'm wondering is why does every one of these MAGAts look like they came out of central casting?

I actually think that is one of the under-analyzed aspects of this whole story. Watching the video also contrasts the appearance of Democratic Caucus Chair Vincent Dixie with that of the two Justins who are much more Afrocentric (and in the case of Pearson, possibly gay).

As with all things GOP, appearance is more important than substance and so the good ole boys (and girls) get the votes and the "offensive" (upitty) Negros get expelled.

Carry that even further forward to Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn who frequently looks like she just came from a 1972 Key Party, was a Home Ec major, who was an "image consultant" before she got elected to the House (and then the Senate) and to this day still owns a plantation (and a house in Nashville, a home in New England, a home in DC , at least five cars and two yachts...but who's counting)

And then there is the only GOP Rep to consistently vote three times against expelling these members, Dr. Charlie Baum of Murfreesboro, an economics professor who actually has written about racial inequality (but seems to be GOP because...religion...)

Look at the GOP en masse. The gov of SD looks like a blow-up sex doll, Kari Lake IS Vaseline Woman, but the governor of Alabama looks like a Mee-Ma straight from the farm and then there is The Huckabeast--GOP women are divided into those you fuck (Boebert) and those you take home (Stefanik). The men either look like MadCaw or John Thune or Mitch McConnell and these cartoon assholes.

I guess the bottom line I'm arguing is that GOP voters are lazy or their reps assume they are and make it easy for them...and then get upset when anyone doesn't play along with the script.

by Anonymousreply 247April 9, 2023 1:06 AM

As the reporter says at R243 (which aired weeks before this event happened), this body simply makes up the rules--alway in their favor--as they go along.

First they said that they would defund Memphis if the Pearson is voted back in. NOW, they're saying that the terms of the expulsion deny them the right to come back at any point during this session...which ends in 2025.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 248April 9, 2023 1:27 AM

And if this were Dems making the rules along the way, the GOP would've already cut off federal funds. I mean for fuck sake, the GOP is trying to go after Alvin Bragg based off of nonexistent fed. funds. They're trying to point to some $5K used by the DA's office before Bragg was even there and that money came out of the over a billion dollars in asset forfeiture that the NY DA's office worked to get over years and sent to that shit Congress.

by Anonymousreply 249April 9, 2023 1:35 AM

Tennessee 2 were expelled, not three.

If all three are guilty, why expel only two?

by Anonymousreply 252April 9, 2023 4:32 PM

I don't even understand the moronic logic of MAGAts, So, the insurrectionists are innocent because they weren't violent when we all saw they were violent, but these three need to be expelled AND arrested (according to those right-wing parasites) when they're all actual members of the statehouse who are allowed to be in there and they did nothing violent.

by Anonymousreply 253April 9, 2023 6:11 PM

R271, what makes it even stupider is that it exposed the TN Republican "standards." Now everyone knows you can be a sexual predator of underage kids, you can urinate in another member's seat within the house and you can be a domestic abuser, yet not only will you not be expelled, you will be put into la leadership role.

Make no mistake: Everyone knows that had it been two, white Republicans with the scary "bullhorn," nothing would've happened. Not even a slap on the wrist.

We can only imagine the arrogance of these racist assholes that we haven't witnessed over the years. The south has never changed. R275, Republicans just pride themselves on being such fucking assholes who never own their own bullshit behavior. Not a single person would've known any of three if Republicans themselves hadn't tried to expel them over something like this.

It reminds me of when Obama warned Republicans not to pass some legislation that would allow citizens to sue the Saudis over 9/11. He said it would open up the US military to lawsuits filed by victims of American military operations. Rs passed it anyway and Obama vetoed it and the McConnell-controlled Senate overrode the veto and then realized it was a mistake to pass it. What did that fucking turtle shit do? Blamed Obama for not better explaining the dangers of passing the legislation.

Tennessee’s Shelby County Commission voted on Wednesday to reinstate Rep. Justin Pearson to the state’s House of Representatives. The unanimous vote came less than a week after Republicans expelled Pearson and fellow Black lawmaker Justin Jones as punishment for participating in a gun control protest on the House floor.

“The message to all the people in Nashville who decided to expel us: You can’t expel hope … You can’t expel our fight,” Jones said in a speech following the vote. “We look forward to continuing to fight, continuing to advocate, until justice rolls down like water. Let’s get back to work.”

Pearson, Jones, and their fellow Rep. Gloria Johnson participated in a protest calling for more stringent gun control legislation in the aftermath of a mass shooting at an elementary school in Nashville. The trio led chants on the House floor, and approached the podium to deliver remarks without being recognized by the chair, in violation of the chamber rules.

What typically might result in a formal reprimand turned into an effort to fully oust the so-called “Tennessee Three” from government. Pearson and Jones were expelled, and Johnson, who is white, avoided removal by a margin of a single vote.

Jones was reinstated to the House through a unanimous vote by the Nashville Metro City Council on Monday. Jones was sworn back in on the state Capitol steps minutes later. House Speaker Cameron Sexton previously indicated he would allow the ejected members to be seated should their city commissioners reappoint them.

Jones called for Sexton’s resignation shortly after his return to the chamber. “What we’re calling for is the restoration of democracy in the people’s house,” he said. “We don’t need a speaker who shuts off microphones, who cuts off members from speaking, who wont even let us vote if we join those who are protesting … We have a speaker who represents the opposite of democracy, which is autocracy. He is not fit to serve in that role.”
