It's what they do. There has always been an element of viciousness to many street crimes. It rarely got reported though. Someone willing to stab another person is willing to get up close and personal and that tells you something about that person. Sociopath.

The police were called to the outside of a high-rise condo complex, and found this guy upon arrival. But arrival where? Did they find him on the street or in the complex? It's not completely clear.
And there's no clue who was behind it or why. Statistically it's probably not random.

cbs released this .........
A man stabbed to death early Tuesday morning near downtown San Francisco was well-known tech executive Bob Lee, sources told CBS Bay Area.
The 43-year-old Lee was the chief product officer of San Francisco-based cryptocurrency startup MobileCoin. He also started Cash App and was a former chief technology officer of Square.
MobileCoin issued a statement saying Lee had died, but it didn't say how.
"Our dear friend and colleague, Bob Lee passed away yesterday at the age of 43, survived by a loving family and collection of close friends and collaborators," the company's statement said, describing Lee as "a dynamo, a force of nature ... the genuine article."
Officers responded at about 2:35 a.m. to a report of a stabbing in the city's Rincon Hill neighborhood and found the victim, who was taken to a hospital and succumbed to his injuries there, police said.
The city's medical examiner's office hadn't yet identified the victim as of Tuesday evening, but friends of Lee told CBS Bay Area he was the victim.
No arrest has been made in the case and San Francisco police haven't released any details about any possible suspects.

Nope. It was in front of the Portside condos. One building is facing the Embarcadero, on the corner of Main Street. When you turn down Main St., there's the Bay Bridge overpass (which is pretty creepy at night) followed by Portside 2, which is where this took place.

I've lived in DC a long time and we used to always carry a $20 ready in our pocket so we'd have something to give. Any real money or cards were in a secreted pocket or place. I stopped carrying any cards I didn't need for that excursion when I went out. Including stupid shit like CVS card or library card. Not just the theft bit the PITA to replace cards.
This is why we can't live nice lives. We tolerate too much shit from POS people. Good luck to Chicago and now Wisconsin. Enabling crime destroys communities and lives.

Public officials also weighed in on the anxieties raised. “I’ve heard from a number of my constituents in Rincon Point, South Beach and East Cut, many of whom have already voiced concerns to me about public safety challenges,” Dorsey contiued.

Op gives us a "cute" vague title instead of one people might actually find if searching for this story.
Former MMA fighter Jake Shields remembered the tech executive as a "loyal friend', with Musk responding to his Tweet.
Shields claimed that Lee was 'targeted' in a 'random mugging and attack' despite being in a 'good ' part of the city.
The tech mogul had been living in a $1.8million apartment in Miami, while his wife Krista appears to still be living in San Francisco.
Authorities confirmed that he was rushed to hospital but died from his injuries in the early hours.
Officials have yet to make an arrest, and San Francisco 𝑷𝒐𝒍𝒊𝒄𝒆 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒓𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝒂𝒏𝒚 𝒅𝒆𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒍𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒂 𝒔𝒖𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒕.

This is sad. Any city is sketchy at 2:30 in the morning. There was a stabbing in the past couple of years not too far from this area, but that was in broad daylight. A homeless man pushed over an Asian woman and then a Good Samaritan chased after him and was stabbed.
I hope they catch whoever did this.

In other words the dead guy as a San Francisco gay guy almost certainly voted for the politicians who remade the city into his own murder-machine. 𝑇ℎ𝑎𝑡'𝑙𝑙 pwn the republicans
Surveillance camera footage obtained by The San Francisco Standard shows the final minutes of tech mogul Bob Lee, 43, who was fatally stabbed on Tuesday
Lee can be seen in the images walking on the sidewalk up Main Street away from the Bay Bridge at 2:30am, holding his side and using his phone
He approaches a parked car, and lifts his shirt to show he has been stabbed, but the car drives off and Lee collapses in front of an apartment building

Desperately seeking help " and the car drives off ". Just what we all would expect from San Francisco.

To clarify in advance: I have no idea what Bob Lee's beliefs were; my commentary is on the celebration of a person's murder which has raged on Twitter all day, and how that will change on a dime.
Jake Shields has clearly been punched in the head too many times, and it's possible that they barely knew each other and he just decided to insert himself into the story. As for the other guy, I have no idea who he is.
Bob Lee's social-media posts don't hint at anything unusual, so it could just be people coming out of the woodwork to get their face on the news.

A lot of what has come up for me is gloating that a perceived liberal was stabbed to death in San Francisco.
This was the top one when I just searched:

Stabbing death of tech executive unleashes torrent of anger from VCs and techies who ‘hate what San Francisco has become’
And what they did so much to help shape.
No arrests have been made, and police haven’t released any details about a potential suspect.
After Lee’s death was reported, an outpouring of grief and remembrances for the tech executive, who also was the chief product officer at crypto startup MobileCoin, flooded social media. And along with the grief came a flood of anger over the state of San Francisco, which tech leaders have previously called the “worst run city in the United States.”
Michael Arrington, founder of news outlet TechCrunch and venture capital database CrunchBase, also joined the growing chorus: “[Bob Lee] was one of the best humans I’ve ever met. I’m so glad we were able to spend time together recently. RIP. I hate what San Francisco has become.”

1) Good riddance! Serves him right. Lee deserved to die for creating that dreadful app, thinking he was impervious to chaos, and for lacking real world survival skills. Killed by the very people who use his garbage app: ghetto minorities, whores, and crazy, drug addict homeless types. Tasteful friends use Zelle or Venmo. Fuck CA and the daily spam emails I get because of its widespread use. Hopefully this scandal will cut down on all that. Now MTv will have to put up an RIP message during the Drag Race finale. The winner gets $200k and a coffin courtesy of CashApp!
2) Why the fuck would he insist on being peripatetic after getting stabbed? Put pressure on the wound, call 911, and stay calm. Instead he walks around everywhere like he's the final girl in a horror movie, trying to ask for change, and hail a cab in the rain. What is this, Jada Pinkett in Scream 2? Sit your ass down and focus on staying alive! Now's not the time for a walkabout and some early morning marathon training. He thought someone would help his ass because he's a rich, handsome, white guy who doesn't seem threatening. NOPE! We learned from Kitty Genovese that when people see some dark, chaotic shit going down they run the other way. Whatever caused your downfall leave me out of it!
3) In any major city, nothing good happens late at night. Between 11pm-5am stay indoors! It was a fucking weeknight and he has a meeting the next day. He had NO business roaming the streets at that hour. Take a car service from the office to your apartment. Fuck walking to get some air. He should've been sleeping, working in his home office, up getting a late night snack from the fridge, going for a quick bathroom pee, or jerkin' off to some porn. If he was out late it was because he was up to no good (likely drugs, maybe sex) and trouble found him quick! I wouldn't be surprised if they clocked him as a rich guy, tried to shake him down, he refused and told them he doesn't have any cash money on him, and they stabbed him out of anger. Good. That'll learn ya!

by Anonymous | reply 145 | April 6, 2023 9:49 AM |
R145, it is. Some people react to shocking events by reassuring themselves that they’re smart and cautious—it could NEVER happen to them. But that’s the thing with shocking events, they’re completely arbitrary. You could get stabbed to death by a random madman at 4 p.m. coming home from the grocery store.
by Anonymous | reply 146 | April 6, 2023 9:59 AM |
R145. I for one am not victim blaming.
It's terrible and shocking. I would like to know a little bit more though.
Was this actually random? Having read through the thread and the articles I still can't determine that. It certainly seems he was stabbed on the street and managed to make it a good way before he collapsed (for the final time). Who was the person in the car that drove off? Did he know something about the incident or were they just scared and ran?
But these questions inevitably lead to ones that seem like victim blaming. What was he was doing out at night is a perfectly legitimate question if people want to determine the circumstances and cause behind this death. Was he out for a midnight stroll and this was a random attack? Was he meeting friends or acquaintances and things turned ugly?
I also can't seem to figure out if he even lived in the area. Was it his building that he collapsed outside of? If not, what was he doing around that area? Meeting someone? A hookup gone wrong?
So frustrating that there's so little detail, yet already people are so ready to dump their "hot takes" on everyone.

There was absolutely no reason for him to be wandering outside in a major city rife with drug addicts and crime, well past midnight, in the middle of a work week with meetings scheduled the next day. Instead of conserving his energy after the attack he wanders around as if in search of the nearest Starbucks. He was acting foolish and died a fool's death! Add him to the pile of dead white men who thought their privilege would keep them from harm.

Or a sex hookup gone wrong. Or all of the above. Either way, he was killed for being a good looking, rich, white dude who was out and about when he should've been safely inside enjoying the comforts of his home. Lee lived an insulated life, surrounded by lots of white people who think like him and smart Asians who bask in the glow of white superiority. He never thought such a thing would happen to him. There's no denying that the bizarre, violent death, of a seemingly healthy, well off, middle-aged man, at such a late hour, on a weeknight, outside his home strongly suggests he is partly to blame for his own demise.

We may never know, but I find it interesting that surveillance footage has not been released yet.

Hmm, I don't think I've EVER been to a late night party on a Monday night lasting into Tuesday morning much less been in the mood to walk home at such an hour in a city notorious for homeless drug addicts. If it's late and I'm drunk and tired, I'd much rather hop in a car and be driven safely to my door then get inside and mind my business.
Some people live sheltered lives and as such they don't have a developed sense for self preservation. While probably not the worst guy, it's clear he lived a more sheltered life as a rich, successful, white dude. Whatever the case, he shouldn't have been out walking round at that hour. This is a basic lesson I learned long ago as a kid. Nothing good happens late at night, so stay alert and get indoors. It's also why most sensible people, even on a weekend, call it quits around midnight especially if they are taking public transportation home.
The biggest difference is when shit hit the fan and things got real, he panicked instead of staying calm. That's the number one rule. Stay calm. He looked to strangers instead of first focusing on helping himself. Some things, like survival, you can't delegate to so called members of your team. Changing locations and walking around upright expended PRECIOUS energy and certainly didn't make it easier for EMTs to find him in a timely fashion. He also didn't appear to be putting enough pressure on the wound instead taking time to lift his shirt up.

I have a friend who is attractive, Ivy League educated, tall, fit, and well off monetarily speaking. They've never experienced major physical ailments that would render them weak nor do they really know of the true craziness and random chaos of life. Things have always worked out for them and their big problems are mainly in their head. I think such privilege does affect the way they interact with the world.
My friend loves to walk home while drunk after a late night out and it always seemed unnecessarily reckless to me. They also are known to stop and talk to homeless people who ask them for money. Also a recipe for disaster. If you can't give them what they ask for they can get violent. I've seen it happen. Even being on the phone isn't enough to protect one from harm's way, so I always stay alert when outside after dark. I've tried warning them, but they seem unconvinced and don't really heed my words of advice. Perhaps my friend should get stabbed to learn their lesson.

So they still don’t know why he was walking from the Bay Bridge direction to the condo? That is weird for that time of night. Most wealthy people take an Uber from point to point. And that is not a nice area. It’s kind of bland near freeway ramps with office or industrial type buildings.

A few minutes away. As if death would need that much time! Rich white people really think they are god's gift to the world and thus can't be harmed. Love it when the real world kills them. Just like all those rich kids who travel abroad never to return home. It's no conspiracy he was taken out. It was privilege.
by Anonymous | reply 236 | April 6, 2023 10:30 PM |
Betting there will be more to this story. He had a hardened, kinda grotty look in photos. It wasn't a fresh-faced, healthy look. The police statements have that cautious, circumspect tone they had when everybody was buying the Jussie story.
I dunno. I was in SF in 2021 for 4/5 nights at a motel in North Beach, not one of the gutbucket ones, nice, but still a motel Walked up and down Columbus to City Lights, dinner in North Beach's Little Italy, late-night cafes, often returning between midnight and 2:00 not totally sober. No worries. Of course, the North Beach main Avenues do get foot traffic of tourists and young hipster partiers. But it was still COVID time without crowds, and felt okay. Of course, that stretch of Embarcadero where this happened, perhaps there's sketchiness right across from those condos, don't know that part well.

by Anonymous | reply 239 | April 6, 2023 10:43 PM |
R237 Exactly. The police know Lee was up to no good and had a bad thing coming to him. I get the sense he was looking to score late night drugs or was approached by a homeless guy while walking and things didn't end well for him. Completely out of his element he flailed around expecting sympathy and in turn was met with the harsh indifference of city life after dark. Can't say I'm displeased.
by Anonymous | reply 240 | April 6, 2023 10:45 PM |
According to the photos I saw he must have got stabbed inside the building and he staggered out into the street looking to get help.
by Anonymous | reply 241 | April 6, 2023 10:56 PM |
R238 And? So what? See, it's this kind of assumptive thinking that got him killed. Why would you expect someone to risk their life by helping you and getting involved in some unknown chaos? That's all I need is for whoever stabbed you to come after me for helping you. Or for you to fake me out under the guise of injury only to then harm me. Hell no.
R239 It really is that simple, but everyone upthread keeps trying to find ways to give the dead guy the benefit of the doubt. Simple yet effective changes in behavior could've prevented all this. I hope his family and friends read this thread and are faced with the cold hard truth that it was his fault.
by Anonymous | reply 242 | April 6, 2023 10:57 PM |
R241 If true, that's even stupider than staying put. The stumbling around in the dark instead of putting pressure on the wound, conserving energy, and waiting for the ambulance is what really killed him. Unless it was a stab to a major artery, he could've survived.
by Anonymous | reply 243 | April 6, 2023 11:01 PM |
It sounds like the case of the guy on a business trip in Baton Rouge who tried to score hookers and blow, but ended up rolled up like a burrito in a Persian rug instead of safe in his hotel room. Be careful about making new “friends” in the dead of night.

by Anonymous | reply 247 | April 6, 2023 11:21 PM |
R247 Would die. The dumb fucker walked much farther than just outside the building entrance. He played this completely wrong in every way. 1) He was up late at night instead of safely at home asleep or quietly minding his own business. 2) He was staying in a weird part of town instead of at a hotel which would have staff on hand to help address his needs and assist in his survival. 3) He exhausted himself walking around aimlessly for god knows how long instead of trying not to move and exert himself further. 4) He thought people would save him instead of trying to save himself.

by Anonymous | reply 249 | April 6, 2023 11:31 PM |
I once found myself really drunk, late at night, in a bad part of town with no phone service. Because I was so drunk, I got badly lost, but eventually, I made it home. Things would've been much easier and safer had I called a cab in advance or had someone get one for me. If I had gotten stabbed while lost, I could've died as there was no one around to ask for help. Always know your exit strategy in case things go south.

R247, yes, they may have been scared seeing a bloodied man, could have thought it was a trap, too. Bob Lee may have been intoxicated as well, which may account for his wandering around instead of staying still after calling 911. Also, he's worth a half-billion. Don't these people have bodyguards? Should've stayed down in a sitting position against the glass doors in the light and waited for EMTs while on the phone. I also would've let them know it was a chest injury and that I'm fading fast. Why would he stay bent over like that while bleeding out? Constantly trying to get up and walk after a chest injury was so stupid. Even his phone call was unhelpful to the emergency services.

R264 Some of us have better instincts and know how to survive emergency situations. He did so many things wrong and failed to properly educate himself. You may THINK you how you would handle an emergency situation but you never really know until you’re in it. As someone upthread wrote, he must’ve been in shock. Can’t be expected to hold onto rational thought in that case.
by Anonymous | reply 281 | April 7, 2023 1:33 AM |
I think he took a calculated risk in trying to flag down cars and buzz the apartments after considering the chances of someone randomly stumbling upon him at 2:30 in the morning while he sat in place and put pressure on the wound. He probably didn’t expect them to drive off and leave him to die.
by Anonymous | reply 282 | April 7, 2023 1:37 AM |
He had fun with a rentboy (incall, rentboy visited SF and rented an airbnb in that condo) . . Then he was killed on the way back to hotel. In hindsight, he should ask the rentboy to do outcall. He prob didn’t want hotel workers to see a hot muscular rentboy to visit him.

The weapon was reportedly a kitchen knife, which was discarded near the scene of the attack. Doesn’t this point to it happening in a residence? If it was a street attack, I would think it would be some kind of combat knife because it’s hard to conceal a damn kitchen knife on one’s person.

It's the puritan impulse r291, and it appears in the oddest ways. He died, so he must be a great sinner. If he wasn't a great sinner, he'd be alive right now. People think the puritan impulse is about Christian piety. It isn't. It's about the belief that only the truly wicked actually suffer in this life. The pure are always magically saved, and if you aren't saved, it is because you are among the impure.

R284 You don't know homeless people. There was a troubled drug addict guy in my city who stabbed someone who made a pass at him. Turns out they knew each other and the weapon used was a colored ceramic knife. Now the assailant still carries a switch blade on the dl. The other guy was bleeding bad and needed to get stitches, but survived. The other guy went on the run before getting arrested. Turns out, his family was rich and used fancy lawyers to get him off. The drug habit is why he was homeless, but the family still used their connections to stop him from going to prison.
by Anonymous | reply 296 | April 7, 2023 2:37 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 298 | April 7, 2023 2:54 AM |
The point some people above are failing to comprehend is that Lee made poor life choices that ultimately led to his demise. You can either take the moral high ground and admonish those who speak the truth by looking at the situation pragmatically or you can learn from his death and take care not to repeat his mistakes. There's this misconception that when chaos hits you are allowed to panic, play the victim, and just let shock take over. Not if you intend to live. Preparedness and stress tests are how both people and organizations ensure smarter responses to ensure survival.
When it came for Lee's survival instincts to kick in, he was ill prepared, likely under the influence, and ultimately died. Everyone knows that when you get injured, you have to control the bleeding be it a stab wound, gunshot wound, or broken bones. And you have to be careful about moving around because that can make the injury even worse. In his case, all that walking around exacerbated his chest wound and he made no attempt to actually stop the bleeding. Now, I will say if he was stabbed in the heart then there is not much that could've been done, but seeing how long he lived and walked around, it does seem like he could've survived if he kept his wits about him.
What has always saved me is the ability to remain calm under pressure and use the surge of adrenaline to maintain a clear head, stay focused, and get out of danger. It also helps that I know how to read and deescalate situations.
R297 What they're saying is that drinking and other substance use can impair judgement and motor skills. He did so many things that a sober person who knows better wouldn't do. Like being out late for starters.
by Anonymous | reply 299 | April 7, 2023 3:04 AM |
Victim-blaming is a function of the just-world hypothesis.
It's a defense mechanism employed by people who have felt, or who do feel, powerless. Because they can't cope with the natural unpredictability of life, and because they're ruled by fear, they can only function by convincing themselves that they have the power to rise above any threat.
The world is a just place, they try to convince themselves, and they'll never fall prey to anything bad because they're smarter, stronger, and wiser than the people who do become victims.
In a just world, bad things only happen to bad, stupid, or weak people.
Superior people, like themselves, will be perfectly fine in a stabbing because they'll remember and apply, step by step, best practices even as they're in shock, bleeding out, and their brain function is dropping by the second.
TL;DR: pity them, they're whistling past the graveyard.

Well, R280 he IS culpable. Lee was a grown ass man worth hundreds of millions of dollars not some child with bad parents. Even in death there is accountability. by Anonymous | reply 307 | April 7, 2023 3:42 AM |
R306 I don't think people are delighted, but you can say someone bears a certain level of responsibility for their actions without reducing it to the now often repeated phrase on this thread: victim blaming.
I can say from experience that the world can be highly unequal, unsafe, and unjust, but it's still our responsibility to navigate it smartly and take responsibility for our own actions. I do think his privilege acted as a blind spot and thus contributed to his downfall. Why else would you make the choices he made unless you thought you were safe from harm and expected others would save you in your time of need?
I don't ever expect things to go smoothly my way. As such, I always take into account the worst outcomes and adjust my behavior and strategy accordingly. Lee likely never though someone would attack him. Of course. It's a bizarre act. After all, he's a rich, successful, heterosexual, white guy who was famous and beloved in the tech world. Why would such a fate befall him? And yet whoever attacked him didn't care about any of that.
I never would've thought it would be safe to walk around in the dark in a city at such an hour. It reminds me of those rich people who leave their front doors unlocked because the neighborhood is wealthy and regarded as safe only for them to get killed by robbers. If you place too much value and trust in external things like wealth, appearance, property taxes, fame, etc. you'll be surprised when the harsh truth finds you. I just hope people reading this thread can learn from his death and not be so cavalier with their own safety. Plot armor is for movies. There's no guarantee you'll be spared just because you're you.

Maybe the person in the car was a woman driving alone. Maybe she saw a man stumbling around, moving erratically, trying to get her to stop. Maybe she assesses the situation as dangerous and decided to put her own safety first. It can be a ruse for dangerous people to appear injured or in distress, to get well-intentioned people to stop and engage. Then they are robbed or worse.
Had I been in the car, I would have called 911, though.

The security is funded by residents in the area through property taxes.

The guy crosses the street with a roller suitcase and with something in his other hand as well, a smaller case perhaps. He disappears from the camera but comes back in view minutes later without the roller suitcase and is standing on the corner and I think I see something in his hand that could be a knife. Seriously, someone else take a look please. Then the guy bends over and he grabs some dirt--you can see it fall out of his hand. He walks a few paces and checks out the next bed of bushes, and the next. He continues walking until a truck with flashing lights racing down the street in the same direction as he is when he turns around and walks the other way.

That's classic homeless... bundled in what they can wear on their backs, with a found suitcase full of necessary things like rubber bands, floppy discs and rusty nails.

by Anonymous | reply 358 | April 7, 2023 8:56 PM |
R358 If a suspicious-looking homeless person was hanging out in that neighborhood, the hired security officers either missed him, or weren’t doing their jobs. Also, homeless people in general probably avoid Rincon Hills because of the neighborhood patrol. The streets look clean and empty there.

by Anonymous | reply 360 | April 7, 2023 9:06 PM |
I think that might be the same person the police were talking to on the corner in the early news coverage. I can't be sure because they were mostly obscured by the cops' backs in the video..
Since the stabbing apparently took place under the bridge overpass, for a mystery person dragging a suitcase not to be mentioned as having been seen in any of the Main St. footage along with Bob Lee, he would've had to have fled toward the Embarcadero and then headed back on Spear St. to be coming from the direction he's seen coming from. That would have taken a while.
When I lived a half block from there, if I was walking from the Embarcadero side at night, I would always avoid the bridge end of Main St. and go from Harrison to Spear to Folsom, then back down Main. That route was better lit; there are more security cameras; there are people from Google and Mozilla leaving work and congregating on the sidewalk at all hours; and Google has a small army of very visible security guards 24/7. And, of course, as I've harped on before in this thread, the dark recesses under the overpass and next to the Portside's parking gate creeped me the fuck out after dark.
by Anonymous | reply 361 | April 7, 2023 9:10 PM |
If you're passing someone like that on the street give them a wide berth. Don't wear earpods, hang on your phone, etc. or you won't hear someone run up on you.
Never engage with homeless; they think because they live in public that they have the right to just walk up and address you. I totally ignore them and will get 'faggot' 'motherfucker' etc.
Gee, sorry I didn't share my hard-earned money with you, dirtbag.

What a creepy set of videos...he's the only pedestrian seen, all in black, pacing back/forth, wheeling a suitcase (his belongings - homeless?), bending down to the shrubbery. Carmignani, 53, was leaving his mother’s home at about 7 p.m. in the Marina District when he was accosted by a man waving an industrial metal crowbar, friends of the ex-commissioner told The Post.
San Francisco Police later arrested Garret Doty, 24, who was booked on assault with a deadly weapon.
Joe Alioto-Veronese, a prominent attorney and friend, said Carmignani was at his mother’s home when he noticed Doty and two other transients blocking the driveway.
When Carmignani asked them to move, he was bludgeoned in the back of the head by Doty, which injured the former smoke-eater’s skull and brain.
“[Doty] was actually seen swinging the pipe and walking around the neighborhood after the attack,” Alioto-Veronese said. “It’s dangerous here and the fact that this could happen to a big guy like Don Carmignani, that tells us it could happen to anybody in any neighborhood in San Francisco.”

It's interesting how many posts there are here saying that this guy was basically asking to be murdered because he dared to be outside at 2:30.
No one is holding the Hell's Kitchen guy to the same insane standard. I'm honestly not quite sure why. Is it just because people hate billionaires?

I took one more walk down the block before leaving, and this time I noticed that there’s a camera on the bridge pillar where the blood trail starts and the knife was found.
Also, there are rumors that he was walking toward the Embarcadero when it happened, which makes a lot more sense. So I take back what I said about not understanding someone using Main St. to get to the hotel.
I was under the impression that he had been seen picked up on camera going in the opposite direction prior to the stabbing. Maybe he was; maybe he wasn’t. But it does make more sense this way.
by Anonymous | reply 425 | April 9, 2023 12:19 AM |
A random robbery. Maybe perpetrator didn't take much, if anything, due to panic, need to get away fast. If it was a hit, how'd they know Bob Lee was going to stay an extra day, per news reports?
by Anonymous | reply 426 | April 9, 2023 12:23 AM |
If it was a hit, it had to be someone in his inner circle who knew where he was walking that night, or lured him to a location where he’d have to take a certain route back to his hotel (or somewhere else — to score drugs maybe?) I didn’t hear any reports of where he was or who he was with before his murder, which is very strange.

R422 The guy in NYC was a regular person not super rich. Lee was worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Regardless of what he was doing, since it was so late at night he could've afforded to take a car to his hotel/residence. Lee had already spoken openly about his concerns of crime and homelessness in SF. Unless it was lip service to disguise a tax motivated relocation to Miami, one would expect Lee to heed his own advice.
Money affords not only luxuries and creature comforts, but also another level of safety and security for which the average person may not be able or willing to afford. For example, Ring cameras (plus the subscription service and app) are popular, but I don't use one. Instead, I live in a luxury doorman building, so my packages don't get stolen and I don't have to deal with maintenance issues. In any event, Lee's death is a lesson to us all about the basics of safety when living and traveling around a major city especially after dark. All the people who take offense to comments espousing that sort of practical thinking are destined to repeat his mistakes.

I find it fascinating having just stayed around the corner for a weekend. Definitely not a place I would walk alone at night. Castro is fine, even parts of Mission - but not there. I get that he was probably wasted. Been there and made the same stupid mistakes - but got lucky. No, people shouldn’t be killed and yes, there is a problem with mentally ill and addicted homeless men in SF and West Coast generally. What pisses me off is Musk and this guy Lee blaming it on “liberal” leaders of cities - the simplistic reduction of problems is the hallmark of conservativism. Let them all move to Miami and see how perfect life is there.
by Anonymous | reply 437 | April 9, 2023 2:45 AM |
I'm surprised that so many people wonder why he didn't use his cell phone, why he was walking around when he should have been staying still, etc.
When you lose a great deal of blood quite suddenly, you go into shock. People in shock are often confused and may do things that don't seem to make sense. They're not in their right minds. This man was bleeding to death very rapidly. Dying people seldom have the presence of mind to make smart, well-informed decisions.
If you just hate billionaires, fine. Go ahead and say he deserved to die because he was too rich. But don't act like he brought this on himself by going outside, or by failing to follow the right protocol as his blood pressure plummeted to zilch over nada.

by Anonymous | reply 441 | April 9, 2023 3:17 AM |
Psychiatric treatment, forced when necessary, affordable housing to minimize the number on the street, employment for those who don’t fit into the normal world, subsidies where necessary to house and treat the mentally Ill and addicted. “More cops” and “arrest them all” seems to be the right wing answer - which is simplistic and illegal.
by Anonymous | reply 442 | April 9, 2023 3:27 AM |
R438 Lee did use his cell phone to call 911. The video shows this. The dispatch call also includes that they had a lock on his location via his cell phone and were on their way. This seems to be too much for people here to grasp, but common sense dictates that he shouldn't have been walking around alone, in the dark, at 2:30am on a Tuesday, in a sketchy area of town. It wasn't a hit.
If a 'hit man' is going to kill someone, they're going to kill them, not stab them once and hope they bleed out. It would be too risky. It would only take one little thing to go wrong (or right, if you're the victim) such as help being there immediately, you didn't hit a vein, artery, or major organ, so it's nothing more than a superficial wound, and hundreds of other factors that would have to go perfectly to ensure he died.
No, a hit ensures the person is dead.

R461 The overall neighborhood is seen as relatively safe, but the area in which he was stabbed via the bridge is known to be less well lit, dangerous, and best avoided after dark. They've since added lights and cameras to the spot of the attack. Every neighborhood has those liminal, transitional, border spaces by bridges and roads where trouble can lurk. It's that classic horror movie scene where the white person is staring down a dark tunnel, hallway, alley, bridge, or road and should turn back, but doesn't and pays the price.

As a former full-time resident of one of the towers on the 300 block, who still stays in the condo frequently, I have an opinion on the sketchiness of the area. I'll probably get it from both sides, but that's okay.
As I've said, the main place that gave me the heebie-jeebies was the area from the intersection of Bryant and Main to just past the bridge overpass. On the north side of the street, there were dark recesses (now brightly lit when I walked by on Friday night) on either side of the Portside's parking gate. On the south side, the short stretch of Bryant along the pump station is dark and spooky.
If I was walking from the Embarcadero, I would make a loop and walk on Spear St. specifically to avoid that area. The thing is, getting stabbed to death wasn't something that ever crossed my mind; for me, it was just that one area (and there are a few others, but I never had reason to go to them) and that was because I didn't want to get mugged.
The thing to keep in mind is that the general vicinity is overflowing with Google and Mozilla employees who are viewed as easy prey—nerds with couple of phones, a laptop or two in their backpack, sometimes a nice watch, new AirPods, and, as a bonus, cash in their pockets. It's very easy to pick one off and hop on the bridge.
There's an international fencing operation shipping the items I listed above out of the country in bulk. As long as they're in business, there's going an army of low-level street criminals who go out and procure those items in return for a commission.
There is private security, but it's a large area and they can't be everywhere at once. Since the YouTube shooting, Google has made their security very in-your-face. They're out on the sidewalk day and night, but they're on Spear St.
Homeless people do walk through, but they're not erecting tents or doing the things they do in other parts of the city. People in the area aren't buying drugs from street dealers, so there's none of that.
So is the neighborhood as a whole sketchy? A few places are; most are not. I moved because I wanted a yard and more space.

100% there is more to the story. But 1/2 billion dollars pays a lot of lawyers and PR people to ENSURE any damaging info is not publicized. We may never get the full story because - as with every story about the super rich - it can be buried with enough money. High paid lawyers exist to make sure the city officials never make public information that would be revealed in the normal course of a high profile murder like this. This is a case study in how the rich, especially the super rich, in this country have a whole different system of “justice” than most of us.

On the other hand, if it was someone who knew him and there are suspects, law enforcement won’t release that info because it could jeopardize the investigation. If that’s the case, it will take weeks, even months to gather enough evidence to make an arrest.

Just down the street from the killing, Whole Foods Market shuts a store due to "deteriorating street conditions around drug use and crime."
“We are closing our Trinity location only for the time being,” a Whole Foods spokesperson said in a statement. “If we feel we can ensure the safety of our team members in the store, we will evaluate a reopening of our Trinity location.”

R519. Depends. I've watched enough crappy crime shows to know that not every premeditated murder is either planned or executed with perfection.

Could easily be a crime of passion of course.

R523, that Whole Foods store was a major selling point in attracting potential tenants to that new luxury building. Without the grocery store, convincing people to move there and pay the high rents will be a much tougher sell.

This Whole Foods opened a year ago and was their flagship store. Lots of mayhem and chaos inside. Fights. They had 250 of the plastic carry baskets for shoppers and all 250 were stolen. I don't know if it's because social media makes everything feel closer or because mass shooting and classrooms of little kids are being murdered and the powers that be won't remedy it because there is so much greed but this country is starting to feel very dangerous. You know when you say "that wouldn't happen to me, only other people have that stuff happen to them"? Well now I think it can happen to me. Just one grocery store, one concert, one movie theatre, one bank. That's all it takes. Who's to say me or any one of us won't be there?

A neighborhood losing their best grocery market is seen as a big loss for real estate interests. Nobody wants to live in a neighborhood with limited options for good groceries.

Mayor London Breed’s spokesperson, Jeff Cretan, said police and the mayor’s office have worked with Whole Foods for months over public safety and would continue to engage with the company over the future of the site.

For the same reason it can't be used to house the criminal: it's very expensive to run a prison on an island.
It would be better to reclaim a ghost town, put a little money into (trailers, etc) and move all the social service agencies that are currently in SF out there. Also, move the people out there as well.

If the assailant was black, forget it. The media in NYC will never use race as a descriptor when there’s a dangerous person on the loose. They will show video/screenshots from surveillance cameras, but they won’t say it. Which is totally stupid if they’re describing height, weight and clothing.

Love that we're finally getting some updates as it felt like we were starting to lose focus on this thread.
It's as they say, Momeni mo' problems. A deliciously gay lovers' spat aside, I bet it was more likely that Lee was killed over money. He probably refused to give the killer access of some kind. No job opportunity/promotion, no seat on the board, no insider information, or no more investor funding for his company. In short, no mo' money for Momeni!
When faced with the prospect of paring down, Momeni Leaned In to Lee (thanks, Sheryl)... with a paring knife! This is not how I thought the Clue reboot would go: Mr. Brown with the Knife in the Car. They say poison is a women's weapon. Well, if guns belong to straight men, then knives belong to gays and the Old World.
I do think it is sad Lee was killed by someone he knew. You know that was an awful surprise not only to be stabbed, but then to be ignored (by Dan!) and then bleed out and die. Terrible!
The hardened urbanite in me still partially blames Lee for being out that late. Instead of prioritizing professional boundaries and being home at a normal hour/spending time with family, he decided to muck around and cavort as part of the bro culture in tech. No proper business in a lab or conference room was being done at 2:30am. Alas, it's always the ones you know!
Finally, to get DL real for a Momeni Moment, you really have to watch out for that notorious Arab anger. It'll come out when you least expect it. Doesn't matter if they're handsome, light-skinned, well educated, smiley, or have a big thick cock that'll bust your hole open as desired - Arab men are dangerous pit bulls whose repressed cultures have bred into their blood a love of young, twink pussy and and rapid-fire, lethal, Old World anger that comes from the desert sands of time. Unfortunately, they're good for a hot fuck, but nothing more. There's a reason they're cast as villains and are quietly called sand n-gg-rs - they really wild out! Not racist, just saying. Carry on!

I am one of those persons who thought this was a random knife attack probably by someone homeless who was mentally ill. I am also not an alt-right conservative. But I lived in the Bay Area and I've seen with my own eyes the area deteriorate and the feeling of lawlessness permeate the community. I also know two people personally who were murdered by transients. One at the Bart and one in their workplace. Unfortunately it's the perception that matters but the fear is real. Glad I don't live there anymore.
