What are the best hotdogs to buy?
I’ve always bought Nathans, Hebrew National or Sabrett hot dogs, with the latter being my favorite.
Which do you like? And which are the worst? I saw these Bar-S hot dogs that cost like $1.50 for a pack at the supermarket but I didn’t get them because I’m scared lol.

We use the Bar-S brand to conceal our dogs daily medications. Tanner does nor seem to mind the taste. A package of Bar-S brand 'hot dogs' will NOT freeze if left in the freezer, they just get stiff but never fully frozen. true story. I have no idea what is in them

Caspers if the have them in your area. You can find them for sure in California in most supermarkets They have a natural casing that gives you that satisfying "snap". Longer than the bun without being ridiculous about it. Not horribly salty like most brands are becoming, but very nicely spiced. It really is the perfect dog.
Speaking of dogs. I wouldn't feed Bar-S products to a dog. Hell, the dog probably wouldn't eat them either.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | April 4, 2023 9:57 PM

OP, Bar-S are not hot dogs in the sense that Nathan's or Hebrew National are. They're "franks," like chicken franks, turkey franks, etc.
Their "beef franks" are more expensive than $1.50.

We make our own, from a recipe the Germans in the family brought over in 1908.
It's work but really worth it. Having a smokehouse helps, of course, but keeping the smokiness to a minimum is the key. Having our own cattle (we do all-beef wieners) also helps, but the butchering is very labor-intensive.

Here’s a hot dog trick! Once your hotdog is cooked put it in a buttered hotdog bun and wrap in foil. Do not use a lot of butter. Maybe one to 2 teaspoons. Spread it thinly on the inside and outside of the bun. It doesn’t need to cover the whole bun, just most of it. Bake it in the toaster oven at 300° for 8 to 10 minutes. It’s delicious!

I grew up on Nathan’s and Hebrew National, and they use to be the gold standard. However the land grab by ConAgra turned their hot dogs into pure crap.. although their deli products can be pretty good, as are Dietz and Watson’s (their Gourmet Light Sliced Turkey is the best I’ve had).
Right now I’d say Hoffy’s Hollywood’s Original Natural Casing Premium Beef Frankfurters is the best out there, with Boar’s Head Natural Casing beef dogs not too bad. FYI, THE Hoffy’s has to say “Hollywood’s Original Natural Casing” - their other dogs are no better than Nathan’s or HN. Pricier, but Smart & Final Extra often has good deals on 10 packs, and Vons sometimes has sales on 5-packs.

Hot dogs are tasty but hot dogs with quality meet and no nitrates are practically an oxymoron. And expensive. Here's a tip - buy fresh uncured sausage that you like, and look for sales. If it's on sale, sausage freezes well. No nitrates, and possibly better cuts of meet inside. Just treat the sausage like a hot dog. put it in a roll with all your favorite condiments.

I actually really liked the Hebrew National 97% fat free. There was one gram of fat compared to 10 grams in their reduced fat and 13 in a regular and I honestly can’t tell the difference. 45 calories vs. 150.
Anyone go to UC Berkeley familiar with Top Dog? THAT’S what I want in a hot dog. It’s been more years than I can count, but for some reason I thought they had sesame seed rolls, so I’d buy Italian sesame seed bread and cut it into hot dog shaped buns and try to replicate that but I don’t know if they actually did have sesame seeds at Top Dog.
And I can’t find 97% fat free at my grocery stores ☹️. But as far as diet hotdogs go, they were pretty fucking awesome.
