What are the best hotdogs to buy?

I’ve always bought Nathans, Hebrew National or Sabrett hot dogs, with the latter being my favorite.

Which do you like? And which are the worst? I saw these Bar-S hot dogs that cost like $1.50 for a pack at the supermarket but I didn’t get them because I’m scared lol.

by Anonymousreply 117May 25, 2023 11:53 PM

Boar's Head (Brunckhorst's) is about the best.

by Anonymousreply 1April 4, 2023 9:19 PM

I think they're regional but for me in Philly we like Dietze and Watson BEEF franks (avoid the deli franks).

by Anonymousreply 2April 4, 2023 9:19 PM

Hebrew National, always.

by Anonymousreply 3April 4, 2023 9:37 PM

This thread makes me want a hot dog real bad.

by Anonymousreply 4April 4, 2023 9:44 PM

N-N-N-Nathan’s.

by Anonymousreply 5April 4, 2023 9:45 PM

I like the same brands, OP. I get Nathan's at Aldi for a reasonable price.

by Anonymousreply 6April 4, 2023 9:48 PM

R6 I usually buy them from Target but Costco sells the 28 pack for $16 or Sam’s Club has the 24 pack for $14

by Anonymousreply 7April 4, 2023 9:50 PM

R7, how long does it take you to eat 28 hot dogs?

by Anonymousreply 8April 4, 2023 9:51 PM

We use the Bar-S brand to conceal our dogs daily medications. Tanner does nor seem to mind the taste. A package of Bar-S brand 'hot dogs' will NOT freeze if left in the freezer, they just get stiff but never fully frozen. true story. I have no idea what is in them

by Anonymousreply 9April 4, 2023 9:52 PM

Long r8. I bought them February 1, and I have two left in the freezer.

by Anonymousreply 10April 4, 2023 9:53 PM

R9 that scares me. See. This is why I didn’t buy them lol. I wanna try them but idk what’s in them. They’re $1.50 for a reason.

by Anonymousreply 11April 4, 2023 9:54 PM

Are you looking for a bargain or quality?

Applegate Organic Grass Fed Hot Dogs are the best, both in taste and nutrition. They do cost more, but they are perhaps they best in today's market.

I know we're not talking about Kirkland Signature hotdogs, but since we are talking hot dogs and Costco was mentioned-- Kirkland Sig hotdogs are fucking gross. Just a PSA.

by Anonymousreply 13April 4, 2023 9:56 PM

What chili does everyone put on their dogs?

by Anonymousreply 14April 4, 2023 9:57 PM

Caspers if the have them in your area. You can find them for sure in California in most supermarkets They have a natural casing that gives you that satisfying "snap". Longer than the bun without being ridiculous about it. Not horribly salty like most brands are becoming, but very nicely spiced. It really is the perfect dog.

Speaking of dogs. I wouldn't feed Bar-S products to a dog. Hell, the dog probably wouldn't eat them either.

by Anonymousreply 15April 4, 2023 9:57 PM

OP, Bar-S are not hot dogs in the sense that Nathan's or Hebrew National are. They're "franks," like chicken franks, turkey franks, etc.

Their "beef franks" are more expensive than $1.50.

by Anonymousreply 16April 4, 2023 10:17 PM

Sahlen's was pretty damn good when I lived in Western New York. Can't get them here in Californ-i-a. Miss them.

by Anonymousreply 17April 4, 2023 10:19 PM

I don’t eat this kind of shit!

by Anonymousreply 18April 4, 2023 10:19 PM

Nathan's or Hebrew Nat.

by Anonymousreply 19April 4, 2023 10:23 PM

R9, is Tanner a rescue dog?

by Anonymousreply 20April 4, 2023 10:24 PM

I would have thought Gerg had expertise to answer this question. He is the essence of cheap junk crammed with filler you don't want to know about.

by Anonymousreply 21April 4, 2023 10:25 PM

Hebrew National, all beef, kosher hot dogs.

This morning at Market Basket, the New England grocery chain with the lowest prices, they were offered at $6.99 for a package of five.

I put them back.

by Anonymousreply 22April 4, 2023 10:27 PM

Deutschmacher - the best. Cook'em in your air fryer.

by Anonymousreply 23April 4, 2023 10:28 PM

Another vote for Dietze and Watson.

I love the Oscar Meyer Angus jumbo beef hot dogs. Or the boars head.

by Anonymousreply 34April 5, 2023 12:41 AM

Oh r34 I tried the angus recently and was surprised how much I like them. I typically hate Oscar Meyer hotdogs for some reason. Ball Park also

by Anonymousreply 35April 5, 2023 12:43 AM

Hebrew Nationals.

by Anonymousreply 36April 5, 2023 12:44 AM

Feel bad for yourself, you self-obsessed, empty freak.

by Anonymousreply 37April 5, 2023 12:45 AM

Growing up that is all my stepdad would buy r36. My mom would buy Nathan’s or Sabrett though along with Hebrew National for him because we liked the Nathan’s and Sabrett. But eventually we all just ate Hebrew National.

by Anonymousreply 38April 5, 2023 12:46 AM

Ball Park Franks - I am not a hot dog connoisseur, but I found these to be edible.

by Anonymousreply 39April 5, 2023 12:46 AM

R35 I think it's because it's not the normal ones. The beef jumbo are, well, bigger and beefier. Juicier. Maybe the Angus gives them better flavor too. I bbqed them last summer and everyone raved about them, they melted in our mouths.

Your blood pressure will skyrocket eating them though, salty is an understatement.

by Anonymousreply 49April 5, 2023 1:24 AM

R17 Sahlens for sure but there's also a local brand Wardynskis. I like them better than Sahlens but it's probably a close tie. Don't think you can get either brand outside of the WNY area (just like our sponge candy, Paula's donuts, etc).

Yes, we eat like fatties around here but it's all so delicious.

by Anonymousreply 50April 5, 2023 1:26 AM

by Anonymousreply 51April 5, 2023 1:28 AM

Yes, Wardynskis is good too.

by Anonymousreply 52April 5, 2023 1:28 AM

We make our own, from a recipe the Germans in the family brought over in 1908.

It's work but really worth it. Having a smokehouse helps, of course, but keeping the smokiness to a minimum is the key. Having our own cattle (we do all-beef wieners) also helps, but the butchering is very labor-intensive.

by Anonymousreply 53April 5, 2023 1:48 AM

I don't even want to know what kind of person eats those soggy hotdogs wrapped airtight in plastic.

Natural casing, Dietz & Watson or Deutschmacher are great. And I'll even allow Hannafords natural casing.

Never ketchup - you will be banned from my home.

Grilled and topped with diced onions, relish and mustard.

Hebrew National hot dogs stand up to grilling better than any other brand I’ve tried.

by Anonymousreply 61April 5, 2023 4:49 PM

I would help to let us know what area you live in OP. Some people are mentioning brands that you can only get in certain regions. I recommend Fork in the Road brand found at Whole Foods. Snappy!

by Anonymousreply 62April 5, 2023 5:10 PM

Disgusting!

I only buy Ball Park smoked white meat turkey hot dogs. They are only 45 calories per frank and have 6g of protein. Regular hot dogs are too high in calories in my opinion.

I had 2 Nathans skinless the other day. They’re not very big. If they were a little bit bigger I think I would like them better. But not the quarter pound size. That to me is too big. They were just OK to me though. On the salty side.

by Anonymousreply 77April 8, 2023 9:18 PM

Nathans or Hebrew National. I find HN a little greasy so my first choice is always Nathan's.

[quote]What are the best hotdogs to bi?

by Anonymousreply 79April 8, 2023 11:01 PM

Here’s a hot dog trick! Once your hotdog is cooked put it in a buttered hotdog bun and wrap in foil. Do not use a lot of butter. Maybe one to 2 teaspoons. Spread it thinly on the inside and outside of the bun. It doesn’t need to cover the whole bun, just most of it. Bake it in the toaster oven at 300° for 8 to 10 minutes. It’s delicious!

by Anonymousreply 80April 10, 2023 8:07 PM

Wait. So the shit is already cooked, and you want me to cook it for another 8-10 minutes?

Aw, hell no. That thing is cooked, she's goin' in!

by Anonymousreply 81April 10, 2023 9:09 PM

I’ve been eating more kielbasa lately. So much more substantial than regular dogs.

by Anonymousreply 82April 13, 2023 6:28 PM

Do you mean knockwurst? That's like a big hot dog.

Kielbasa is polish sausage and is usually (like most Polish guys) huge.

by Anonymousreply 83April 13, 2023 6:37 PM

No r83, I mean kielbasas. They taste sweeter. And are larger than franks.

by Anonymousreply 94April 20, 2023 3:07 PM

Nathan's Angus beef. Mmm.

by Anonymousreply 95April 20, 2023 3:43 PM

I grew up on Nathan’s and Hebrew National, and they use to be the gold standard. However the land grab by ConAgra turned their hot dogs into pure crap.. although their deli products can be pretty good, as are Dietz and Watson’s (their Gourmet Light Sliced Turkey is the best I’ve had).

Right now I’d say Hoffy’s Hollywood’s Original Natural Casing Premium Beef Frankfurters is the best out there, with Boar’s Head Natural Casing beef dogs not too bad. FYI, THE Hoffy’s has to say “Hollywood’s Original Natural Casing” - their other dogs are no better than Nathan’s or HN. Pricier, but Smart & Final Extra often has good deals on 10 packs, and Vons sometimes has sales on 5-packs.

Long plane trip and then a two hour drive to my in-laws and what was my father-in-law doing? Barbequing Hebrew Nationals on the outside stone barbeque. Oh how the skins popped on the first bite and the cold beer....sigh.

Mmmmmmm. I won't forget.

by Anonymousreply 105May 23, 2023 12:37 AM

Hot dogs are tasty but hot dogs with quality meet and no nitrates are practically an oxymoron. And expensive. Here's a tip - buy fresh uncured sausage that you like, and look for sales. If it's on sale, sausage freezes well. No nitrates, and possibly better cuts of meet inside. Just treat the sausage like a hot dog. put it in a roll with all your favorite condiments.

by Anonymousreply 106May 23, 2023 12:44 AM

I actually really liked the Hebrew National 97% fat free. There was one gram of fat compared to 10 grams in their reduced fat and 13 in a regular and I honestly can’t tell the difference. 45 calories vs. 150.

Anyone go to UC Berkeley familiar with Top Dog? THAT’S what I want in a hot dog. It’s been more years than I can count, but for some reason I thought they had sesame seed rolls, so I’d buy Italian sesame seed bread and cut it into hot dog shaped buns and try to replicate that but I don’t know if they actually did have sesame seeds at Top Dog.

And I can’t find 97% fat free at my grocery stores ☹️. But as far as diet hotdogs go, they were pretty fucking awesome.

by Anonymousreply 114May 23, 2023 6:33 PM
