Why all the fuss about Florence Pugh?

I know she got raves and an Oscar nomination for Little Women but I thought she was all wrong and too contemporary for Amy. She would have been better as tomboyish Jo.

She looks quite stumpy in the OP's picture.

She's a very good actor who gave strong performances in the few things I have watched featuring her.

Florence made an indelible debut in a little seen film called Lady MacBeth. I had high hopes for her after that and she has consistently been underwhelming in terrible films. I'm at the point where if I see her name attached to something, I'm reluctant to watch it.

She's such a fame hungry diva. On every red carpet, doing her pathetic Cooking with Flo videos and even stuff like Hot Ones. She behaves like a popstar not a serious actor.

She's such a boring actress. Purely the product of PR which will stop as soon as the studios realize she has no box office pull. Then we'll see her on British TV mysteries for the rest of her life.

She's been very uneven.

She was very good in LADY MACBETH. I would agree that she was miscast as Amy in LITTLE WOMEN (the 1994 film is the only one that did the role of Amy right by casting a younger and older actress in the role as the film progressed). I liked her at first in MIDSOMMAR but her character (and the film) grew tiresome as the story progressed.

I did not like her at all in the LITTLE DRUMMER GIRL mini-series - she didn't get the character at all. She was good in THE WONDER on Netflix, though.

The media is always honing in on some "next big thing" when a young actor shows some talent. Pugh is just another example along with Chalamet and possibly Paul Mescal.

Looks like a midget. Acts like a pick me girl. Has a terrible stylist.

That outfit would make anyone look terrible. Florence is short of stature and is curvy, she has hips and a butt and a nice figure with a waist. That outfit is slop. She's a pretty girl. I like her.

She has a body type that just isn't meant to be thin; I suspect she will head into Shelley Winters territory as she ages, which isn't a bad thing. Her face is pretty enough, but not striking, and without the weight she would have no distinguishing features to separate her from the many other young, blonde, clichéd-looking actresses.

I think she’s great. And I’ve always hated the idea that actors have to be tall, stick-thin supermodels - they’re playing people, not models. No need for every character in every film to look exactly the same.

I don't think she was miscast in Little Women so much as that Little Women took a wildly different approach to Amy.

Pugh has a great voice and a kind of presence, in part because she's not a stick figure.

Her red carpet looks are terrible. The oh-look-at-what-she-wore stunt era is over. She just looks cheap and tacky.

I had never heard of her before Little Women and I thought she was terrific as Amy. The first time the character was ever likable, while at the same time not compromising on her 'negative' attributes.

I found her casting in Little Women disconcerting. She looked and sounded older than all the other girls but she was playing the youngest. She made Amy charming and funny at times but her voice made her character like a parody.

She's a good actress and I've liked her in every one of her films. In real life however, she's only bearable in short doses.

She is one of the actresses who seems deeply unhappy. As a human being in general.

Never saw it with Sweeney Sidney or ScarJo either.

She's cramming projects like she has a terminal diagnosis. These days there are typically 3 Pugh movies playing at the same time, none of them moneymakers. She’s very funny in the Black Widow movie and the Hawkeye series.

She’s miscast in the upcoming Dune, Part Two. Princess Irulan is described in the book as a tall slim blonde with aristocratic beauty. Florence is short and has a generically pretty face. Nothing memorable, appearance-wise.

Virginia Madsen is about an inch taller than Florence, but she was beautiful in the1984 Dune movie. Maybe Florence will bring life to the character, but her looks are underwhelming. I wonder if they made her lose weight for the role.

I don't know why, exactly, but I really like her. She's talented enough, but it's her looks. As R20 said, she has a presence. I find her pugnacious face and slight chunkiness different and appealing. But I still can't explain why she became as popular and lauded as she currently is.

I was just trying to point out it's strange to have 3 distinct restaurants in a block of each other and then scream bloody murder when the city blocks two blocks 4 or 5 blocks away to cars. The problem is the food and being provincial.
