I've watched a few YouTube videos of this family. They're so dysfunctional and live in such squalor yet seem pretty happy (as far as I can tell from the ones who can speak). I found the videographer's interview with Joe Rogan interesting. Apparently a big reason for their disabilities is that their father's father was an identical twin, and their mother's father was the counterpart identical twin.

Maybe some of you already knew this, but I didn't see it mentioned anywhere.

Fascinated by the siblings who got lucky-- escaped the environment in which they were raised, married a non-relative and led "normal lives" contrasted by the ones that are non-verbal and totally dependent on care to survive. Their genetic lottery may only be a $20 scratch-off, but it's something.

I watched this video last night and in it the siblings of the man who barks laughed while they said that he forced himself upon a woman years ago.

R35, there's a Jason Ray Whittaker who has a sexual assault conviction - a younger guy (a relative, probably). Are you sure that the Ray Whittaker featured in Soft White Underbelly has a sexual assault conviction?

There’s a fundamentalist group in Utah that practices polygamy and incest. It’s an offshoot from the Mormon church. Boys marry their half-sisters. Girls marry their mother’s or father’s brothers. There are birth defects in the group. Since marriages are arranged, they now supposedly do genetic testing to see which brothers/sisters and nieces/uncles are genetically compatible. Even if a woman is of limited mental capabilities, they’ll still marry her off and have her give birth yearly. The State of Utah is well aware of this, but turns a blind eye. Family values, Republican state. Sure, Utah!

Soft White Underbelly Whittakers update. I'm in the middle of watching this. Mark (the filmmaker) brings along his "assistant" (attractive young female). One of the Whittakers asks Mark how come he always has good-looking girls with him.

As much as I enjoy the Whittaker videos, and appreciate what he does, I don't think Mark is particularly skilled as an interviewer. Granted, it must be difficult to have an in-depth conversation with this lot.

R46, I agree that Mark's not that great at interviewing. It's good that he steps back and lets people talk. But there are LOTS of times when I hear one of his subjects say something and I'm thinking WHAT? And Mark does not follow up on it. He'll either just let it pass or even change the topic, himself.

The Whittakers, I think Mark does OK with them. What they can talk about is limited. Only a couple of them can even really converse in a way that's understandable to the average person.

I watched the interview with Jason Whittaker that I posted at R44. He admitted to doing prison time for having sex w/a 14-year-old girl. I forgot how old he said he was. He said he thought she was 18.

Anyway, Mark didn't ask great questions. I think I could've asked better questions than Mark did.
