I’m about to watch ANNIE (1982) for the first time

Jealous, bitches? 😎

by Anonymousreply 35April 5, 2023 12:18 PM

Did anyone else relate to Annie as a young gayling?

by Anonymousreply 1April 3, 2023 12:05 PM

R2- In the present 🎁 as an elder gay I relate to the frumpy Spinster Toula Portukalis ( before she does a makeover and meets Ian) in the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding 💒.

by Anonymousreply 2April 3, 2023 12:22 PM

Just watch Serial Mom instead.

bet your bottom dollar!

by Anonymousreply 4April 3, 2023 12:25 PM

No, You could instead spend your time watching John Huston's movies made for adults.

by Anonymousreply 5April 3, 2023 12:31 PM

My comment was meant for R1

by Anonymousreply 6April 3, 2023 12:38 PM

It's a very underwhelming movie. Sorry, John.

by Anonymousreply 7April 3, 2023 1:43 PM

It's much too busy. Worked better on stage. But I do love the addition of WE GOT ANNIE because Ann Reinking is gorgeous and Geoffrey Holder is a force of nature.

by Anonymousreply 8April 3, 2023 1:45 PM

Leapin' lizards!

by Anonymousreply 9April 3, 2023 3:19 PM

"We Got Annie" was nothing more than an excuse for Ann Reinking to show off her dancing.

I aspirationally related to Daddy Warbucks, except for the bald head, because of the money.

Was obsessed with this movie as a child. Watched it for the first time in years several weeks ago, after I found out my boyfriend had never seen it. It held up in the best way, when childhood nostalgia is enhanced by quality of details you only notice as an adult. The costumes, the sets, Ann Reinking's dance numbers, Carol Burnett's brilliance, the surreal and wonderful inclusion of Camille. Found myself really appreciating Tim Curry and Bernadette Peters as the villains-- Bernadette in particular chilled me, seeing her flirtatious beauty contrasted with her cruelty to the children, dragging them to be thrown and locked in a closet, no remorse in their plans to kidnap and murder Annie. That penultimate scene too has so much pathos, when the lightbulb turns on for Miss Hannigan and she tries to fight off Rooster before it's too late. The only part of the film I can't stand is the wasted time with the Roosevelts. Doesn't move the plot forward and we don't even get a new song out of it. But overall it's such a fun, enjoyable watch.

R12 agree with all this except Camille (which should have been about 1 min instead of 20) and I do like the Roosevelt scene - tomororow is a good payoff there.

by Anonymousreply 14April 3, 2023 5:03 PM

It’ll end in tears, and by tears I mean blood.

by Anonymousreply 15April 3, 2023 6:57 PM

Watch Little Shop Of Horrors instead if you haven't seen it. I watched it for the first time a few days ago and I still have the music stuck in my head.

by Anonymousreply 16April 4, 2023 6:20 AM

R10 And what, pray tell, is wrong with that?

by Anonymousreply 17April 4, 2023 6:24 AM

R17 she is! Unduly hated here because of an unfortunate Oscar performance, but gorgeous, a fabulous dancer, decent singer and actress , what else do you want?

She disappeared after Micky & Maude which is unfortunate.

And Albert Finney is my favorite actor.

So yeah I love this movie.

by Anonymousreply 18April 4, 2023 6:33 AM

The film that best illustrates what grade school is really like.

by Anonymousreply 19April 4, 2023 11:40 AM

Annie, Annie sprinkle

OP are you the same one who watched Carrie for the first time?

Soon, you're gonna tell us you watch Christine next?

by Anonymousreply 22April 5, 2023 1:26 AM

The character of Annie is tedious. I'd rather have had a film about Oliver Warbucks, Punjab, and the Asp

Watch My Burning Cunt

by Anonymousreply 24April 5, 2023 1:36 AM

So cute and unassuming. Surprised he went on Letterman back then as it had just started and he generally didn’t start getting top guests until around 86/87. And Finney almost never gave interviews.

This movie was ruined for me when someone told me to look out for the Director of Photography's panty fetish, now when I watch it that's all I can see!

by Anonymousreply 26April 5, 2023 1:47 AM

I like it for the same reason I like "Pulp Fiction."

by Anonymousreply 27April 5, 2023 2:01 AM

Carol should have been nominated for an oscar for this.

Albert Finney was fucking hot back in the day. (Tom Jones stirred some masturbatory fantasies) He had a string of movies in the early to mid 80's that were offbeat but good. Wolfen, the one with Susan Dey, and Under the Volcano are all good as well.

I used to imitate Ann Reinkings dancing in We Got Annie in my backyard.

by Anonymousreply 28April 5, 2023 2:08 AM

I wanted to be in a threeway with a young Albert Finney and young Oliver Reed.

by Anonymousreply 29April 5, 2023 2:09 AM

I'm not jealous. The film version is supposed to be one of the worst movies ever made.

by Anonymousreply 30April 5, 2023 2:11 AM

[quote] one of the worst movies ever made.

Not that bad. About a third of the film is very entertaining.

If it's on TCM I'll record it. Then later fast forward through the Orphans part and watch to the end of "We've Got Annie", then delete.

by Anonymousreply 31April 5, 2023 3:54 AM

There are many songs I don't miss (the title song, "You Won't Be an Orphan for Long," "A New Deal for Christmas"), but I do really miss "Tomorrow" (as a diegetic song) and "NYC."

by Anonymousreply 32April 5, 2023 3:59 AM

For some reason I really hated this film as a kid. Never tried to watch it as an adult, but even hearing one of the songs brings back unpleasant memories of its manic hard-sell cheerfulness.

That scene in Serial Mom was perfect.

by Anonymousreply 33April 5, 2023 4:43 AM

I am jealous! Watching Carol Burnett for the first time in that role will be a treat!

by Anonymousreply 34April 5, 2023 4:52 AM
