My intuition tells me they were fuck buddies and Schock, being a total grifter, blackmailed Ryan and threatened to out him if he didn't do whatever favors Schock wanted. Then when Schock was indicted, his back was against the wall, he played the gay card and cashed in on his relationship leverage to get the charges dropped, and Ryan fled from the spotlight so that he would be out of sight and out of mind.

And then he somehow parlayed that into real-estate development. His current venture is somehow buying and thenmaking over luxury boutique hotels. He did one in LA right by LAX, and now he's doing one in NYC.
