Tell Me Stories about the real Pee-wee
What happened to Paul Reubens, who created Pee-wee? For a while, he was everywhere with Pee-wee's Playhouse being popular with kids and adults of all ages. That show was fresh, unique innovative, creative, surreal, funny. Kids got it right away, but so did adults. Even teenagers loved it. Then, there were all the Pee-wee movies, which also did so well.
But then . . . he "took time off" and this was followed by the arrest for public exposure and the accusations of child porn. Was any of that real or just the authorities focusing on a successful gay entertainer. (He is gay????)
Even if he was targeted unfairly, it seems he was behaving in a risky manner, jerking off in a theater after having been on TV and film, and known to millions. Does he have a self-destructive streak, or did he perhaps want to get caught? If so, why?
Did his career fall off due to stress, drugs, the legal problems, the press, or did he just decide to step away?
Does anyone know him or know anything about him to help explain his genius, his scandals, and disappearance? I think he is a genius, and I wonder if he was treated unfairly by the press at a more conservative time when people couldn't handle the idea of gay men being an icon to children.
Please spill the tea on Pee-wee, if you have any tea to spill.

He's an old man now. He grew out of playing that character. His time in the spotlight is over but he was blessed with more than most performers.

After the fallout from his porn theatre arrest, he hid out at nutty heiress Doris Duke's farm. Her adopted as an adult daughter was friends with him.

His "child porn" was campy vintage beefcake material — he and John Paragon (Jambi the genie) both had collections. He was charged with a misdemeanor, not a felony, which he would have caught if it was real hardcore CP and not kitschy old "posing" photos.
I do think it was politically motivated, coming after his porn movie theater arrest. Fred Willard also got caught in a stroke house and it didn't dampen his career for a second (as it shouldn't have).
In retrospect, when he outgrew Pee-wee he should have attempted a second career as a character actor under his own name.

I remember watching the E! True Hollywood Story about him. It said that at the time he got arrested in a porn theater, there was a lot of serious crime happening in Sarasota, so why did the cops waste their resources on a victimless crime?

Pee Wee's first appearances on Late Night with David Letterman, before Playhouse, when Pee Wee was still a mostly underground and more subversive act. I love how David at first clearly didn't know what to think of a guy even weirder than himself, even though he found Pee Wee very funny.

Vintage erotica is just a fancy word for old child porn.

Was he supposed to admire the cinematic values and plot of the porno movie instead of masturbating? It's not like he was watching a special viewing of an Ingmar Bergman film for goodness sake.

R8- no it isn't.
Wasn't the early 90's also a time in Florida of police harassing gay meetup areas? I remember that happening in Fort Lauderdale as well.
The whole movie theater thing was blown out of proportion by a police force and a reporter wanting to make a name for themselves.
It was disgusting what it did to his reputation and career.

Also, the material found during the raid of Reubens’ home led investigators to his friend and fellow actor Jeffrey Jones, who was later arrested for taking sexually explicit photos of a 14 year old boy. It sounds like not all the photos Reubens had in his collection were “vintage.”

Apparently the cops were there for FIVE HOURS waiting for people to come in and then catching them. Several officers.
Imagine justifying that many hours of police time to catch a single man masturbating in the back row.
Ridiculous. It was an adult movie theater playing porn. Let's face it - some of these cops LIKED going there and justified it by catching a diddler or two.
Small town puritanical bullshit. And the cops would come twice a month - what a fucking waste of time and money.

There are photos out there of him younger, probably 20s/early 30s and not in character where he is an attractive guy. Thin, nice Jewish face, pretty gay looking. I’m going to assume he’s gay. I mean Jerry Lewis was handsome when young too, and not mugging for the camera. Old is another thing.

He did a very good stint on the TV series Gotham playing Robin Lord Taylor's father. I believe he does the convention circuit now, but only larger ones, and spends days doing meet and greets and signing photos and doing photo ops, and that makes a lot of money for out of work actors. I've heard he's nice but very introverted.

They are getting ready to film the next White Lotus. It takes place in Thailand. He needs to be on that show as a recurring character.
Kids these days have ZERO concept of camp. They need to learn it, and learn it well. Put all of that transfadia shit behind them, and discover their individual ways of expression.

Well, here's the thing with porn. Millions of us look at it...photos and videos and some of us even still have boxes of old magazines mouldering away in storage units and....we have no way of knowing how old some of those models were when they posed for those photos or shot those videos. Yes, most of them have disclaimers on them "all models are over 18!!!" but that doesn't necessarily mean they really are.
Obvious kiddy porn is disgusting but we've all come across shit that was technically under age whether you realized it or not. That's the dangers of enjoying porn.
