Tell Me Stories about the real Pee-wee

What happened to Paul Reubens, who created Pee-wee? For a while, he was everywhere with Pee-wee's Playhouse being popular with kids and adults of all ages. That show was fresh, unique innovative, creative, surreal, funny. Kids got it right away, but so did adults. Even teenagers loved it. Then, there were all the Pee-wee movies, which also did so well.

But then . . . he "took time off" and this was followed by the arrest for public exposure and the accusations of child porn. Was any of that real or just the authorities focusing on a successful gay entertainer. (He is gay????)

Even if he was targeted unfairly, it seems he was behaving in a risky manner, jerking off in a theater after having been on TV and film, and known to millions. Does he have a self-destructive streak, or did he perhaps want to get caught? If so, why?

Did his career fall off due to stress, drugs, the legal problems, the press, or did he just decide to step away?

Does anyone know him or know anything about him to help explain his genius, his scandals, and disappearance? I think he is a genius, and I wonder if he was treated unfairly by the press at a more conservative time when people couldn't handle the idea of gay men being an icon to children.

Please spill the tea on Pee-wee, if you have any tea to spill.

He's fine! He sends his love!

But he's shocked how fat Cowboy Curtis has gotten.

by Anonymousreply 1April 1, 2023 11:48 PM

He's an old man now. He grew out of playing that character. His time in the spotlight is over but he was blessed with more than most performers.

by Anonymousreply 2April 1, 2023 11:51 PM

After the fallout from his porn theatre arrest, he hid out at nutty heiress Doris Duke's farm. Her adopted as an adult daughter was friends with him.

His "child porn" was campy vintage beefcake material — he and John Paragon (Jambi the genie) both had collections. He was charged with a misdemeanor, not a felony, which he would have caught if it was real hardcore CP and not kitschy old "posing" photos.

I do think it was politically motivated, coming after his porn movie theater arrest. Fred Willard also got caught in a stroke house and it didn't dampen his career for a second (as it shouldn't have).

In retrospect, when he outgrew Pee-wee he should have attempted a second career as a character actor under his own name.

by Anonymousreply 5April 2, 2023 12:08 AM

I remember watching the E! True Hollywood Story about him. It said that at the time he got arrested in a porn theater, there was a lot of serious crime happening in Sarasota, so why did the cops waste their resources on a victimless crime?

by Anonymousreply 6April 2, 2023 12:12 AM

Pee Wee's first appearances on Late Night with David Letterman, before Playhouse, when Pee Wee was still a mostly underground and more subversive act. I love how David at first clearly didn't know what to think of a guy even weirder than himself, even though he found Pee Wee very funny.

Vintage erotica is just a fancy word for old child porn.

by Anonymousreply 8April 2, 2023 12:22 AM

Was he supposed to admire the cinematic values and plot of the porno movie instead of masturbating? It's not like he was watching a special viewing of an Ingmar Bergman film for goodness sake.

by Anonymousreply 9April 2, 2023 12:28 AM

Tiresome is just a fancy word for R8.

by Anonymousreply 10April 2, 2023 12:29 AM

R8- no it isn't.

Wasn't the early 90's also a time in Florida of police harassing gay meetup areas? I remember that happening in Fort Lauderdale as well.

The whole movie theater thing was blown out of proportion by a police force and a reporter wanting to make a name for themselves.

It was disgusting what it did to his reputation and career.

14-17 year old boys are not exactly “beefcake,” IMO. It sounds like they were into twinks.

by Anonymousreply 13April 2, 2023 1:09 AM

Is he gay?

by Anonymousreply 14April 2, 2023 1:11 AM

He appeared on the revised To Tell the Truth not too long ago.

by Anonymousreply 15April 2, 2023 1:13 AM

Also, the material found during the raid of Reubens’ home led investigators to his friend and fellow actor Jeffrey Jones, who was later arrested for taking sexually explicit photos of a 14 year old boy. It sounds like not all the photos Reubens had in his collection were “vintage.”

Everyone in Pee Wee’s playhouse was gay, except for Phil Hartman.

Buy 2 or more and get no discount at all! Same deal if you buy 10! These things won’t last forever unless you’re into buying a ‘used’ one.

Apparently the cops were there for FIVE HOURS waiting for people to come in and then catching them. Several officers.

Imagine justifying that many hours of police time to catch a single man masturbating in the back row.

Ridiculous. It was an adult movie theater playing porn. Let's face it - some of these cops LIKED going there and justified it by catching a diddler or two.

Small town puritanical bullshit. And the cops would come twice a month - what a fucking waste of time and money.

R21, he cannot metabolize zhe grapes!

by Anonymousreply 23April 2, 2023 4:23 AM

He makes an appearance in the new Minnie Pearl documentary (which is poorly done).

👉 He's sadly developed arthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome in both of his hands 👈

by Anonymousreply 25April 2, 2023 5:59 AM

I loved that the name of the chair on Pee-wee's Playhouse was Chairie (sounds like Cherry).

[quote] 14-17 year old boys are not exactly “beefcake,” IMO.

Whatever. He was a collector of vintage erotica and bought the stop in entire lots. He didn’t pour through every item. There’s a good chance he never even saw those images.

Valeria Golino said he was the best kisser she ever experienced in Big Top Pee-Wee. That had to be a burn to Tom Cruise.

I find Paul Reubens to be an attractive guy. I'm probably in the minority though.

by Anonymousreply 33April 2, 2023 12:37 PM

Oh are you Asian, r33?

by Anonymousreply 34April 2, 2023 1:07 PM

There are photos out there of him younger, probably 20s/early 30s and not in character where he is an attractive guy. Thin, nice Jewish face, pretty gay looking. I’m going to assume he’s gay. I mean Jerry Lewis was handsome when young too, and not mugging for the camera. Old is another thing.

by Anonymousreply 40April 2, 2023 2:30 PM

Were you also surprised about Liberace and Rip Taylor, R39?

by Anonymousreply 41April 2, 2023 3:19 PM

Yeah r39, Paul Lynde? Well, he was just a hoot! Gay? You mean like happy? Sure!

by Anonymousreply 42April 2, 2023 3:30 PM

He did a very good stint on the TV series Gotham playing Robin Lord Taylor's father. I believe he does the convention circuit now, but only larger ones, and spends days doing meet and greets and signing photos and doing photo ops, and that makes a lot of money for out of work actors. I've heard he's nice but very introverted.

by Anonymousreply 43April 2, 2023 3:39 PM

Holy shit, he's 70? I just looked that up. First time I have felt springtime fresh in a LONG time.

It was awful what they put him through. Hopefully he will find a fantastic recurring role he can sink his teeth into.

They are getting ready to film the next White Lotus. It takes place in Thailand. He needs to be on that show as a recurring character.

Kids these days have ZERO concept of camp. They need to learn it, and learn it well. Put all of that transfadia shit behind them, and discover their individual ways of expression.

by Anonymousreply 44April 2, 2023 3:46 PM

On Everybody Loves Raymond, he played Robert's future brother-in-law Peter, who owned a comic book store, for a single episode. The character was later played by Chris Elliott, a most unfortunate choice. Why they went with Elliott is beyond comprehension.

Every porn theatre (regardless of what was showing on the screen) had men jerking off (at least) and/or getting blow jobs or hand jobs in the back row. Or in the aisle.

Ah, the 1970s, how much fun we had!

by Anonymousreply 50April 3, 2023 2:32 AM

He played the Penguin’s father a bunch of times (“Batman Returns,” “Gotham”).

by Anonymousreply 51April 3, 2023 2:38 AM

I think he’s hot too. He was possibly my first crush I loved hisshow as a kid and even had a Pee Wee lunchbox

by Anonymousreply 52April 3, 2023 2:39 AM

It must be an old gay thing. I don't get it and find it creepy. Pedo vibes creepy. What is the point of this act?

R53 Just go away. Far far away.

by Anonymousreply 54April 3, 2023 6:27 AM

He had a Netflix movie seven years ago and he had real sexual chemistry with Joe Manganiello. The end of the movie was practically a recreation of the end of Sixteen Candles with Pee-wee and Joe sitting across a birthday cake from each other.

Pee Wee had a lot of celebrity fans, especially among big name comedians. Paul was well-liked by a lot of people and he had a lot of support in his early days. Without knowing that, would you ever imagine the premiere of Pee Wee's Big Adventure would be attended by the likes of Steve Martin, Eddie Murphy, and Mr. T?

Well, here's the thing with porn. Millions of us look at it...photos and videos and some of us even still have boxes of old magazines mouldering away in storage units and....we have no way of knowing how old some of those models were when they posed for those photos or shot those videos. Yes, most of them have disclaimers on them "all models are over 18!!!" but that doesn't necessarily mean they really are.

Obvious kiddy porn is disgusting but we've all come across shit that was technically under age whether you realized it or not. That's the dangers of enjoying porn.

I think the name Pee-wee worked against him on a subconscious level once the pedo and pervert accusations were made. Pee-wee sounds hilarious as a name because it sounds like a childish name for a tiny dick, as in don't play with your Pee-wee in public.

[quote]Pee Wee had a lot of celebrity fans, especially among big name comedians. Paul was well-liked by a lot of people and he had a lot of support in his early days.

R70, I was just referring to Paul having a lot of support behind him before he became famous. He had a lot of people wanting to work with him, he got an HBO special long before Big Adventure, Letterman gave him free reign on the show, etc.

I honestly don't remember specific people coming to his defense after his arrest, but I never perceived people distancing from him. More just a "this is bullshit, leave him alone" vibe.

by Anonymousreply 73April 6, 2023 4:24 AM

I remember after the pornography arrest David Arquette and Courteney Cox made a video defending him. I can't find the video, but here's a short article about it:
