Mixed race. Quadroon. Octoroon. Whatever. It's obvious in most pictures from his boyhood through his 20s.
And if they can't find an African American ancestor then he was part Romani or Sephardic-Arab Jewish or something.

White historians get pressed whenever someone mentions possible black ancestry of their sacred cows. Don’t let them be gay or black.
Anything is possible.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | April 1, 2023 2:02 PM |
I would have no problem if Eisenhower were of mixed race. I'm not even American. Having said that. it's extraordinarily easy to manipulate the colors in a photo if you have the proper software and a black and white picture is the easiest of all.
If you view color photos of Ike, you will see a very, very white man.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | April 1, 2023 2:43 PM |
R9 I thought about that but so many photos online of his young years are the same. They aren't doctored.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | April 1, 2023 4:01 PM |
His mother's family is mostly unknown and often suspected to have been mixed race, because of Ida's appearance, but no one really knows for sure.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 1, 2023 4:08 PM |
Maybe something about B&W emulsion and Ikes face and colouring just produces this effect. He looks like a like skinned black man in the pic at R12.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | April 1, 2023 4:09 PM |
Maybe he ate too much of Mamie's fudge.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | April 1, 2023 4:18 PM |
If he really were part black, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Michael Beschloss, Douglas Brinkley, Jon Meacham and other presidential historians would have uncovered that, and it would have been a major story. Eisenhower would have replaced Obama as America’s first black president.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | April 1, 2023 4:19 PM |
Between his young images and R17’s pic of him in sheer socks, I never thought I’d find myself getting hot over Eisenhower.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | April 1, 2023 4:22 PM |
R9 R14 It’s not simply skin color. Facial features can suggest all sorts of backgrounds. I’m black and I look black. My father was pasty with Eisenhower’s coloring but unmistakably black based on his features. His siblings were light-skinned, wavy-haired. One of my aunts had blond hair and blue eyes, another had hazel eyes. One married another light-skinned black man and had sons who looked like Eisenhower in his youth. @ R17 he looks like my cousin Johnny.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | April 1, 2023 4:31 PM |
People have speculated that his mother was mixed race, based on her appearance, but it hasn't (yet) been proven.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | April 1, 2023 4:35 PM |
Not black. Trust.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | April 1, 2023 4:38 PM |
Where's that professor who does the PBS show about ancestry? And frankly, why would there need to be "speculation" when DNA tests exist? Test his descendants.

R24 good point.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | April 1, 2023 4:41 PM |

As my dear old grandpa used to say "Theres a n***** in that woodpile" . Its obvious in his younger pics. Yes,my grandpa was racist, but he was born in 1901 in Ga . 36 years after the civil war had ended. Emotions still ran very high. He was actually a dear, sweet man but a product of his upbringing.

by Anonymous | reply 31 | April 1, 2023 6:31 PM |
He was an affable man who despite a lack of combat experience was put at the head of military operations in Europe during WWII. He seemed to be well liked.

I mean, it's possible, but I have to remind you a considerable number of native Europeans have features that could be mistaken for "stereotypically black". Look at Norwegian Erling Haaland, for example:

The more I read into it, the more sense it makes. His mother did look biracial, and she didn’t really know he mother or their family. Or at least she claimed.
A DNA test would clear it up a bit, but I think only his grandkids are alive now. Even if they had Black DNA, it could have have another source.
It would be cool if he was. It wouldn’t make him the first Black president. That would be stupid to suggest. He didn’t think of himself as Black, nor did anyone else. He may not have even known. But would be a cool if not sad quirk of history.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | April 1, 2023 7:29 PM |
The Eisenhowers were not black or Jewish.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | April 1, 2023 7:30 PM |
So strong is the stigma of having African blood that the mere suggestion of it sends folks into a frenzy. When they asked Jacqueline Kennedy about a possible black ancestor (a man named Van Salee, who also was an ancestor of Humphrey Bogart), she vehemently denied it, saying that Van Salee was Jewish. This is why white historians and the families of the famous people whose legacies they help to maintain, get so riled up about it. The only reason so many people don't have a problem outing J. Edgar Hoover's black blood is because he is so reviled nowadays. There are many famous white families with some degrees of African ancestry. Before slavery became so entrenched in American culture, black folks married and bedded down with whoever they pleased, just like white people and some indigenous tribes. Eventually as slavery took hold and the "Black Codes" became law, black blood was seen as something to be ashamed of and hated. It happened in Latin America too, but it wasn't as strong. Your children could "become" white if you had children with a white man. North America is different. So no, a white historian wouldn't want anyone knowing that any of America's sacred white cows had black blood. And a lot of white families, prominent or not, took great pains to hide it, especially after the implementation of Jim Crow laws in the South.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | April 1, 2023 7:30 PM |

He looks just white to me. The UK, Ireland and Germany are really not that far from France, Spain, Portugal and Italy and naturally genetic exchange occured. The Mesolithic-Celtic mix produces a swarthy phenotype. Not everyone has that blond Germanic look.

It's twue! It's twue!
by Anonymous | reply 85 | April 1, 2023 9:31 PM |
People can't accept that the first Europeans were black skinned. The Mesolithic Hunter Gatherer culture. The Middle Eastern Farmers who were fairer skinned and carried the febe for light eyes then came, fought them and mostly displaced them but in Southern Europe and the British Isles many survived. The mix of these people produced several ethnic subgroups like the Celtics and Italics. Then the Yanmaya Steppe Herders who were more pale and light haired invaded and settled in Northern, Eastern and Central Europe displacing a lot of the habitants and became the Germanic, Nordic and Slavic tribes. So many Europeans have swarthy skin, curly hair and broad features not because they are recently mixed with Subsaharan African but because they carry the ancient phenotype and many families carry the genes.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | April 1, 2023 9:43 PM |
*gene
by Anonymous | reply 87 | April 1, 2023 9:44 PM |
People think of race as everyone has to be mixed to look the way they do. But it's more of a sequence of events and successive waves of migrations and displacements influenced by many factors. All human populations are mixed since ancient times. The idea of European race is so recent and Europe isn't a real continent. West Eurasian is a more logical term at best since Eurasia is a continent. And North Africans and Arabs look the way they do not because of European DNA, they have ancestry from Ancient East Africans and resemble closely the original Farmer population that took over Europe before their skin and hair lightened from natural selection and later DNA from Steppe Herders. Blue eyes actually are Middle Eastern in origin. So Europeans look like West Asians and North and Subsaharan Africans not the other way around.

Eisenhower was one of our best and most accomplished presidents . His central role in the Allied Forces victory in World War II can’t be underestimated. He did a lot to push infrastructure investment during the post-War years (something that needs to happen again now ) . I’m not so concerned about his race background , whatever it was. He was the right man at the right time .
