Is monogamy realistic?

When you really get to know most people beyond the surface you find out that their marriages and relationships involved cheating at some point. I can’t think of a perfect couple where cheating didn’t happen. The men (or top) usually get caught, and the women (or bottom) do it too but on the sly and still flip out when they find out the macho one does it.

Most straight people have open relationships just only one of them knows it.

The macho one? The top? Oh dear…

by Anonymousreply 2March 31, 2023 9:50 PM

R2 is obviously neither.

by Anonymousreply 3March 31, 2023 9:59 PM

nah, millions of personals showcase bottoms are far more slutty.,

But most people cheat... and not necessarily in the physical sense.

Every couple will inevitably fall into a rut and seek some form of affection from someone else, at some point.

That's why so many people believe str8s can't be friends with the opposite sex, bisexuals are depraved, nor that anyone can maintain friendships with their exes.

I think many people successfully force themselves to be monogamous, in spite of their desire.

Even the Bible talks about two (or 200) girls for every boy.

Concubines.

And then there's the boys and the eunuchs.

by Anonymousreply 6March 31, 2023 10:08 PM

Yes op it is.

by Anonymousreply 7March 31, 2023 10:09 PM

For some, yes. I suspect at least 50% of men (regardless of orientation) cheat on their partners at times. There's a reason the World's Oldest Profession IS the world's oldest profession.

Straights have more societal pressure to live up to the ideal of my monogamy, but in many cases it's just optics. R1 nails it.

This article is rather enlightening.

They do exist. As another poster noted, many are monogamous relationships only in one partner's mind/optimism. They are realistic for some, not for others, neither of which necessarily reflects on the quality of the relationship.

Only if you're FAT!

My husband and I have only had sex together since we’ve been together, we just occasionally do it with a third or a fourth person included too. Not “monogamy” in the traditional sense, but also not open. Works great for us.

I would guess that less than 50% of relationships - where monogamy is the stated goal - are in fact monogamous.

The key is to identify a person who will be satisfied with one partner. It won't be the "bad boy." That bad boy won't change for you or anybody else.

[quote] Every couple will inevitably fall into a rut and seek some form of affection from someone else, at some point.

I don't think a "rut" even needs to occur. Some people (usually a man) will always be on the hunt - even if he has someone at home who is willing to try new things, sexually.

JFC we have this thread at least once a month.

YES. Some people can and want to be monogamous. And they can have great sex.

If you can't do it, knock yourself out, hun. Tear your mussy up. But stop insisting that something that exists is impossible.

by Anonymousreply 16March 31, 2023 10:50 PM

Surprised there's so many yes votes...or maybe I shouldn't be...
